It resembles a green jewel set against the backdrop of the beautiful Baohua mountains. The unique hydrophilic rice terraces surrounding the emerald waters create a stunning and captivating landscape. Standing here, one can experience the tranquility and harmony of nature, as if being enveloped in a beautiful painting.
Moreover, the geographic location of the Edie Reservoir Rice Terraces is quite favorable, situated at a longitude of 102.351962 and a latitude of 23.221373. The area is easily accessible, making it convenient for visitors to explore. The Yangliu Terraced Fields (杨柳梯田) are located in Gata Village (嘎他村), Baohua Township (宝华乡), Honghe County (红河县), Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省), China. Originally known as Gata Terraced Fields (嘎他梯田), these terraced fields are unique among the terraced varieties in Honghe Prefecture. Due to the loose soil in the area, the earthen ridges often collapse. To combat this, the ingenious and hardworking Hani people (哈尼族) planted willow trees (柳树) along the ridges, which not only prevent the collapse but also create the picturesque scene of “willows gracefully reflecting in the terraced fields.” The name was subsequently changed to “Yangliu Terraced Fields.”
The Yangliu Terraced Fields are situated in Gata Village, Baohua Township, Honghe County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China.

Once again, it is the harvest season in the Yangliu Terraced Fields located in Gata Village, Baohua Township, Honghe County.
Recently, the rice paddies in the terraced fields have welcomed a bountiful harvest. The golden fields and the fragrant rice blend beautifully with the surrounding green mountains, creating a stunning rural tapestry.
The Yangliu Terraced Fields are one-of-a-kind in Honghe Prefecture. Due to the loose soil, collapses along the earthen ridges are common. The resourceful Hani people have addressed this by planting willow trees along the ridges.
This not only prevents collapses but also contributes to the unique beauty of the “willow terraced fields.”
In autumn, sunlight filters through the clouds, casting its rays on the layered terraces. The golden rice ears sway gently in the breeze, as if celebrating the joy of harvest.
The grains of rice glisten, plump and rich, representing the valuable wealth of the hardworking farmers.
The terraced fields resemble a massive puzzle, vibrant in color—some areas golden with maturity, while others remain green and unharvested, intertwining to form a captivating natural painting.
Amidst the fields, the aroma of rice wafts through the air—rich and pure—inviting you to embrace the abundance and harvest of autumn.
To visit the Yangliu Terraced Fields, you can travel to Honghe County by bus or car from nearby cities such as Gejiu (个旧) or Jianshui (建水). From Honghe County, local transportation options, including taxis and guided tours, can take you directly to Gata Village.

Niujiaozhai 牛角寨 is, after Nansha, the modern county-town on the banks of the Red River, and the old countytown Yuanyang now renamed Xinjie “New Market”, up in the mountains, the Yuanyang county’s third largest town. But this does not mean very much.
Niujiaozhai Market On most days Niujiaozhai, which means “Ox Horn Village”, is a very sleepy place. Only on market days, held every four days (two days after Yuanyang), Niujiaozhai becomes a buzzing “metropolis” in the mountains as mostly Hani and Yi pour in from the surrounding villages to sell their produce, buy clothes, cigarettes, washing powder or other things they cannot make themselves – or simply to have a good day out in town.
By road, Niujiaozhai is 50km or so from Yuanyang – but in Yunnan road distances are always deceptive, as the roads must follow the contours and often trade distance for speed. In fact, as the crow flies, Niujiaozhai is not even ten kilometres from Yuanyang. As a man walks, it is less than 15 kilometres – a good, not too strenuous afternoon hike.
The trail starts at the pond in the centre of Niujiaozhai. Here, where the motor-road ends, a pedestrian footpath leads downhill into what the locals still call the “Dai” section of town, even though the Dai moved out generations ago. After meandering through the lower section of town, the path turns into the countryside, where a pretty stone stairway continues the descent to the river. Crisscrossing a tractor path, soon the large village of Dashunzhai 大顺寨, the “Big Village By The River” becomes visible across the valley.
After a while the path reaches the river. Once there was a sturdy bridge here, but a heavy summer flood washed it away a few years ago and it has not been rebuilt since. Now a rickety bamboo bridge must do. Many trails lead uphill into Dashunzhai, which all of a sudden does not appear so large anymore. A small shop provides refreshments, while pigs and chicken stroll through the village alleys.
Doubling back, the path leads back down to the river where, a bit further downstream, a small stone bridge, known to the locals as the “large bridge”, crosses the river. From the river bank the main trail now leads eastwards and up the hill. At first it is ill-defined, but soon the many branches merge into one. Yi Bride From the river, it takes about an hour – the steepest part of the trail – before Yangniuzhai 养牛寨 “Cattle Raising Village” is reached. There the trail widens into a tractor path once again and continues almost level on the valleys southern side with pretty vistas down and below.
The next stages are Panlongzhai 盘龙寨 “Winding Dragon Village” and Longshuba 龙书坝 “Dragon Tree Plain”, a larger settlement right in the middle of the famous Longshuba rice terraces. The splendid vistas over these terraces accompany the rest of the walk, as the trail winds out of the valley and towards the old town of Yuanyang.
Trek Profile: The trek is a little over 13km long, with a long climb after the first third. Niujiaozhai lies at around 1350m, the lowest point of the trail, the river crossing at 990m, from where it is a climb up to 1550 m at Yuanyang.
Transport and Accommodation: Many busses and microbusses now go to Niujiaozhai and particularly on market days it is no problem at all to reach the township. For those who want to stay overnight, the choices of accommodation in Niujiaozhai are still very limited, but it is possible to find a bed, if not much more, for 10 yuan.
One of the best ways to get close to the people and enjoy the breathtaking views is to walk from one village to another. There are walking paths that connect all the villages, away from the main road. These paths follow the contour of the hills and some of them criss-cross the terraces. Yuanyang offers great walking possibilities. Here is a two-day-walk from Qingkou to Laohuzui via Duoyishu.
Trek 1 : Qingkou to Shengcun. 6-7 hours. Difficulty: Easy.
Access: Take a mini-bus to Qingkou. Arriving in Shengcun, one can take a mini-bus to Duoyi village (5km, Y5) and stay at Sunlight Guesthouse in Duoyi village.
Direction: Qingkou 箐口 – Quanfuzhang 全福庄 (2 hours) – Bada View Point 坝达观景台 (1.5 hours) – Malizhai 麻栗寨 (50 minutes) – Shengcun 胜村 (2 hours). All Pictures: click here.
It takes 10 minutes to descend from the main road to Qingkou village. One has to pay Y15 for visiting the village. Qingkou is the only village with traditional mushroom houses in Yuanyang.
After walking around in the village, we left the village from the south and followed a wide trail extending into the terrace fields. In half an hour, we passed a bridge. The trail starts to ascend slightly among terrace fields. In another 20 minutes, we arrived at Quangfuzhang.
Quangfuzhan has a trail that goes directly to Malizhai. There is a road mark near a stone lion statue . We took the trail going up to main road close Bada instead. Bada View Point is famous for sunset. It was quiet during the day, and we didn’t sight any tourists.
The trail goes down from Pada to Malizhai. Malizhai is the biggest Hani village in Yuanyang. There is a village gate in the south. We walked to the northeast gate, and followed the dirt track to Shengchun. There is a splendid viewpoint of rice terrace and the village. The road goes further up, passing by two tiny villages before reaching Shengcun.
Trek 2 : Duoyishu to Laohuzui, 5-6 hours of walk. Difficulty: Easy.
(45 minutes). All Pictures: click here.
This is a leisurely 5-6 hour walk with lots of close-up views of rice terraces and minority villages. One could time the walk to get to Laohuzui around sunset as this is a prime location to view sunset (but getting back might be a problem as transport are lesser after 6pm).
From Duoyishu to Puduo, one can take the tractor track above Duoyishu (see map) to Puduo. We walked along the main road eastward for 500m and took a walking path beside a white house on the right side which went up to the top of the hill in 40 minutes. After passing the col, we walked in the west direction on the top of the hill where we enjoyed a panoramic view of stunning rice terraces around Duoyishu. Further west, we sighted two Puduo villages, the bigger upper village in front.
Passing through Puduo Upper Village, we took the path turning to the left in front of the lower Puduo Village. Walking a while in the woods, we left the trail and walked down to the terrace fields along an irrigation canal. The view is more pleasant than the main trail to Dongpu.
Dongpu has a snack shop selling beer and bread, no restaurant. Dongpu has a dirt road going southwest to the main road near Laohuzui. We walked up to the top of the village and went northwest to Duosha village. There are few traditional mushroom houses left in these villages. The majority of the houses are new, which are charmless akin to concrete ‘matchbox’.
The descent from Duosha to Laohuzui view point is pleasant with a breathtaking view over the Laohuzui terrace fields.
Walk around Duoyishu.
If you have time, it’s worth spending one or more days in Duoyishu to discover the surrounding countryside. One can go to Yanzijiao in the north, or walk to some villages such as Aicun in the northeast.

English Name: Aichun Blue Hani Rice Terraces in Yuanyang County, Honghe
Chinese Name: 元阳县爱春蓝色梯田
Location and Highlights:
The Aichun Scenic Area is located 30 kilometers east of Xinjie Town in Yuanyang and 6 kilometers east of the Duoyishu Scenic Area. This spot is the best place to photograph and view the blue rice terraces in Yuanyang, which is actually a part of Duoyishu Village. The area is inhabited by the Hani ethnic group. 75% of the scenes from the film The Story of Yunnan produced by the Beijing Film Studio and 95% of the scenes from the movie Cherry produced by the Shanghai Film Studio were filmed here.
From 9 to 10 a.m. in winter and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in spring, you can see the terraces reflecting a stunning blue color if you look down from Aichun Road on a sunny day. The blue is so vivid and charming that people who haven’t seen it in person often think the photos are digitally altered. The area is also frequently accompanied by a sea of clouds, adding to its charm.
Main Attractions:
The Aichun Scenic Area features several major spots, including Dayutang, Aichun, Azhake, Longshu, and Dawazhe viewpoints. Photography tip: Avoid using a polarizing filter when taking pictures here.
Like the red rice terraces of Longshuba, the blue rice terraces of Aichun are also a unique attraction within the Yuanyang Terraces. Located in Aichun Village, which is connected to Duoyishu, the blue color is reflected from the sky onto the water in the terraces. On clear days, you can enjoy a breathtaking view where the blue sky and the water in the terraces blend seamlessly. Note: If you enter the terraces by a lower path, local villagers may charge a fee of 5 yuan per person.
Best Time to Visit:
The Aichun Blue Rice Terraces are best photographed between 8 and 9 a.m. on sunny days. Standing at a higher vantage point, you can see the blue terraces beneath a blue sky, looking like a string of silk scarves with ripples reflecting light. Surrounding farmhouses are nestled among forests and mist, with smoke rising from chimneys, creating a picturesque scene that resembles a fairyland.
Aichun Blue Terrace Viewing Platform:
The Aichun Terrace Viewing Platform is marked as “Aichun Village Viewing Platform” on road signs. To get there, set your navigation to either “Aichun Terrace Viewing Platform” or “Aichun Blue Terrace.” From the Hani Sisu Viewing Platform, continue east for 1.9 kilometers to reach it.
The blue color of the Aichun Blue Terraces comes from the reflection of the blue sky in the water-filled terraces. Photos of the blue terraces can only be captured under these conditions: from January to March when the terraces are filled with water, in clear blue sky weather, between 8 and 9 a.m., and in direct sunlight.
When I visited at noon, the terraces naturally weren’t blue. My focus wasn’t solely on the blue terraces, as I came to appreciate the scenery and the cultural features of the ethnic minorities. On the day I visited, the weather was excellent! The blue sky was dotted with white clouds, and the nearby terraces were already filled with water. In the distance, the sea of clouds hadn’t yet dissipated, revealing faint mountain peaks that appeared like a fairyland. Nearby, villagers were busy working, and crops were growing well, presenting a scene of harvest and joy.
Recommended Time:
1-3 hours
Transportation:
By Bus:
By Car:
Chartering a car from the old county town to explore the terraces for one day costs around 500 yuan. A trip to Tiger Mouth (Laohuzui) costs about 300 yuan, and a half-day trip to see the sunrise at Duoyishu costs around 500 yuan.
