As Kunming continues to grow and change, green space and public gathering spaces remain in short supply. City planners are looking to address such concerns on the shores of Dianchi Lake (滇池) with a multi-purpose renovation project. Construction will begin April 1 along the entire length of Haigeng Dam (海埂大坝), effectively closing the promenade for the next seven months. The 470 million yuan (US$68 million) undertaking will appear largely cosmetic when finished. However, wholesale changes to the facade will also include improvements to the dam’s overall structural stability as well as the installation of a lake water filtration system. The upgrades are part of a large scheme meant to beautify tourist attractions across the Spring City.
Currently, the Haigeng, or Dianchi, promenade is on average eight meters wide, a space that will be doubled to 16 meters once the makeover is complete. In addition to a vastly expanded walkway, the ‘City Garden’ project calls for extensive park and wetland landscaping, the construction of rest areas, concession stands and modernized lighting, as well as new boat docking facilities.
Pedestrian visitors will no doubt enjoy the enhancements, but the changes they will not be able to see are the most important. The 2,400 meter-long Haigeng Dam was originally built in the 1960s as bulwark between Dianchi Lake and extensive wetlands on its northeastern shore. Once the embankment was finished, the wetlands were drained and filled in with farmland. After 55 years, the dam is in serious need of new support pilings, especially considering it will soon double in size. As the foundation is rebuilt, engineers will also install a filtration system positioned under the dam designed to remove Dianchi’s ever-present but thankfully shrinking sheen of lake-killing algae. The filters are expected to augment other ongoing efforts to clean the lake of its bacterial infestation by seven to ten percent each year.
Located by the Dianchi Lake and at the foot of the Western Hill, the Village is a major part of Kunming Dianchi National Tourist and Holiday Zone. Opened to the public on February 18, 1992, the community is 8 km away from the city of Kunming proper and covers an area of 1,340 mus. The whole community contains 26 villages, and so far the Dai Village, the Bai Village, the Yi Village, the Naxi Village, the Wa Village, the Jinuo Village, the Lahu Village, the Bulang Village and 4 other villages have been completed.
Haigeng Park is mainly a natural scenic spot and a lakeside bathing beach with green willows, sky-piercing eucalyptuses, and blooming flowers. The part and the nearby fishing villages merge harmoniously into one. On bright sunny days, the water stretches out in a boundless expanse; white clouds float lazily across the blue sky while gentle waves are rippling, sails are drifting with the current and sea gulls are skimming over the water.
The Dianchi Scenic Area is quite mesmerizing, where natural scenery and human landscape blend perfectly. It can be divided into two districts, namely West district and East district. What makes Dianchi Lake distinctive is that the color of its water changes with the clouds and sunshine of the day. Around Dianchi Lake also lie many places of interest, such as West Hill, Daguan Park, Yunnan Ethnic Village and so on. These featured attractions are all ideal getaways for visitors to get close to nature to relax.
Western Hills boasts an excellent environment with flourishing flowers and dense forest, providing tourists an excellent environment to enjoy the tranquility and marvelous scenery. They have also been given another name – ‘Sleeping Beauty Hills’ for the hills because its skyline looks like a beautiful young lady laying beside Dianchi Lake with her face upward and her hair trailling into water.

In the design and planning of the entire park, combining the actual conditions , adapting to local conditions , fostering strengths and avoiding weaknesses, carefully planning and designing, and building a mountain forest zoo with local characteristics , it has created a “coordinated development between man and nature” and “humanity and wildlife in harmony” Image.
The entire park is surrounded by mountains and trees, showing a natural, original, wild and simple style. The safari set up more than 10 animal viewing and display areas and entertainment and leisure attractions with rich content and unique structure. This is the ideal classroom for adolescent science education and public protection awareness education. It is also an important base for the protection of wild animals. Chinese Name: 澄江县西浦公园
English Name: Xipu Park in Chengjiang County, Yuxi
Climate Conditions: Subtropical Monsoon Climate
Opening Hours: Year-round: Monday to Sunday 07:30 – 18:30
Located 4 kilometers northwest of Chengjiang County in Yunnan Province, next to Luobu Village in Longjie Town, at the foot of Liangwang Mountain.
Xilongtan is situated in the foothill area below the karst mountain range, with the back of Pandlonggang Mountain comprising karst formations. At the foot of the mountain, spring water emerges from lava caves, with a flow rate of about 0.4 cubic meters per second, forming a pool. The depth of the pool is approximately 1.5-2 meters, covering an area of about 22 square meters.
The surrounding area is densely forested with ancient trees, and the mountains are rich in trees, flowers, and grasses, including over a hundred fragrant ancient trees. The water in the pool near the spring water outlet is clear and transparent.
Xilongtan Park features a single-arch flat bridge approximately 12 meters long and 4.5 meters high. Ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, such as Longgang Temple, Longquan Temple, the opera stage, Guanyin Temple, and Jianfeng Pavilion, are located here.
The park includes a martyr’s cemetery, and on the surface of the large pool, there are wooden pavilions and a winding corridor over the water. A newly built giant blue dragon approximately 30 meters long in the water is a prominent attraction.
In 1980, Xilongtan was listed as one of the county’s key protected scenic spots. The government allocated funds for planning and renovation, restoring pavilions, temples, and constructing new attractions like the giant water dragon.
The spring water emerging from the foot of the cliff is clean, and the pool water is gentle. During the rainy season, the spring water may appear slightly murky, but it creates a clear distinction between the clear and murky water in the pool.
The pool water becomes even clearer, occasionally with fallen leaves floating on the surface.
Every year during the beginning of summer, the people of Chengjiang celebrate the “Beginning of Summer Festival” or “Xipu Festival” at Xilongtan. Traditional activities include performing plays for the gods, worshiping the Dragon King, and praying for favorable weather and abundant harvests.
According to a tablet inscription from the 27th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1755), villagers take turns performing plays by the pool during the Beginning of Summer Festival and the Dragon King’s birthday. The late Qing writer He Zongzhang’s “Phantom Talks” also mentions that there are dramatic performances and celebrations at Xilongtan every year during the Beginning of Summer.
During the festival, residents from Chengjiang and surrounding areas, including Han Chinese and ethnic minorities, come to Xilongtan to celebrate. Elders select young people to hold placards proclaiming “favorable weather and abundant harvests” for worship. The performances then continue for three days and nights. Officials and the public also enjoy festivities at the entrance of the Dragon King Temple opposite the opera stage. Temporary pavilions and stalls are set up along the roadside at the foot of the mountain, selling local products, goods, and snacks, creating a lively atmosphere.
In 1942, Zhou Yeqiao inscribed writings on a single-arch stone bridge between Yueya Pond and Datang, describing the natural scenery of Xilongtan and the characteristics of its clear and murky water, referring to it as “mysterious and wonderful, a naturally beautiful place.”
Due to its clear spring water and beautiful scenery, Xilongtan has been referred to by literati as “Long (Stone) Lingqiao” and has been one of the famous scenic spots in Chengjiang County since ancient times, honored as one of the “Ten Scenic Spots of Chengjiang.”

It was listed as a national 4A scenic spot in the year of 2009.
In medieval times, it was where feudal leaders went to relax and enjoy themselves. Manting Park is also called ‘Chunhuan Park’ which means the place where people can have their soul relax and keep all the earthly cares out of minds. This name came from a legend: One day, the King of the Dai ethnic group came to visit this park with his princess. The princess then was so completely enthralled by the beauty of the sceneries here that she lost her soul and forgot anything else around her.
Manting Park, located in the southeast of Jinghong City in Yunnan Province, is about 2 kilometers (about 1.24 miles) away from the urban area of that city. It has an area of 115,400 square meters (about 28.5 acres).

It depicts Premier Zhou Enlai, dressed in Dai costumes with a water bowl in left hand and an olive branch in right hand, who once joyfully spent the Water-Splashing Festival with the Dai people in 1961. The statue commemorates that unforgettable day.
● Dodhi Trees Planted by the Princess of Thailand (菩提树)
On the left of the Zhou Enlai statue is the second historical attraction: two dodhi trees planted by the princess of Thailand symbolize the friendship between Thailand and China.
● Bamboo Shoots Pagoda(笋塔)
Besides, there is a Bamboo Shoots Pagoda moldered after Manfeilong White Stupa, a quadrangle pavilion, a hexagonal pavilion and a Dai-style pavilion. Within the Manting Park, Manting Village and Manlongkuang village are accessible for a visit.

Now, Manting Park is a place where visitors not only enjoy the scenes but also the traditional culture of the Dai. Buildings, such as the pavilions, possess the distinguished architectural features of the Dai. In its back, there is a temple called Jiebajie in Dai language. It is the most important place for Buddhists in Xishuangbanna to worship Buddhas. Some other various kinds of entertainments are available too, for example, the peacock park where peacocks strut and the elephant park where elephants do acrobatics. As a former royal park, its natural beauty is fascinating with the hard work of the gardeners. The green trees provide visitors cool shade to have a rest. Next to the park is a traditional village of the Dai where visitors could enjoy Dai Cuisine and get to know their tradition and custom.
● Bonfire party(篝火晚会)
Evenings there are even more enjoyable. Every night, there is a bonfire party from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm. During these three hours, visitors will have the chance to watch dances of the Dai, listen to people in traditional Dai costumes playing the Hu Lu Si (a kind of traditional musical instrument). In addition, several traditional activities are held every night.
Manting Park is not about architecture and plantation, which are parts of why we love it, and it’s most common to enjoy yourself in the wonderful evening party held inside the park. The Dancing Singing Fire Evening Party of the Lancang-Mekong River showcases songs and dances of eight countries along the Lancang-Mekong River, which include China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and performances given by minority nationalities of Dai, Jinuo, Blang, Lagu, Yao and Hani. The show integrates ethnic folklores, exotic performances and interactive activities, presenting audiences a multicultural Xishuangbanna.
After the performance is finished, people will go through the Black Forest to make wish by putting the water lanterns onto the Free Life Lake. Campfire and dance just go together: every Campfire Evening Party in Manting Park has proved it. Boys and girls of different ethnic nationalities dance around the campfire. Everyone could take part in. Here the hospitality and boldness of ethnic minority is revealed fully. A fantastic evening just slips away unwittingly.

Window on China Theme Park also named The Kingdom of the Little People (Chinese: 小人国主题乐园) is a theme park located near Kunming, Yunnan that features comic performances by people with dwarfism. Supporters of the park claim that it provides employment to people who would otherwise be unable to find work, but it has been criticized for treating dwarfism as a humorous condition.
As of 2010, there were over 100 employees whose ages ranged from 19 to 48. The park requires employees to be less than 51 inches (130 cm) tall. The employees live in nearby dormitories which were specifically constructed to be accessible to short people. During the performances, the actors pretend to live in small mushroom shaped houses.
The park was founded in September 2009 by Chen Mingjing, a wealthy real estate investor, as part of a complex he owns near Dian Lake in the western suburbs of Kunming that also includes the World Butterfly Ecological Park (世界蝴蝶生态园). Although many visitors to the park are students from nearby towns, Chen hopes to make the park a destination for tourists visiting China. He provides English lessons for his employees to help them interact with foreign tourists. He aims to eventually employ 1,000 people with dwarfism.
The performers sing, dance, and perform onstage for visiting tourists. They often act out Qigong, scenes from fairy tales, or ballets such as Swan Lake. They also occasionally perform hip-hop dances. The performances often feature a “Dwarf King”. The king, who is only 1 metre (3.3 ft) tall, often wears a gold silk cape and rides a three-wheeled motorcycle during performances.
The park has been criticized by several organizations, including the Little People of America and Handicap International. Critics contend that the park resembles a human zoo and isolates the handicapped from the rest of society. Chen claims that the business provides employment for many who would otherwise be unemployed, allowing them to build self-respect. Many employees have said that they enjoy living with other short people and feel less lonely at the park. They say that before they were employed by Chen they were unable to find work or were exploited by employers. The American television channel, Vice, started partly by director Spike Jonze, filmed a piece for their show, Vice Essentials, at the Kingdom of the Little People in 2015. In their short documentary they interviewed some of the staff and were taken on a tour of the park, including the dorms and behind the scenes places that visitors aren’t normally privy to.
The Lollipop Guild and the rest of Munchkin Land. Snow White’s seven caretakers. Willy Wonka’s Oompa-Loompas. All have two things in common: little people (colloquially, “dwarves”) and utter fiction. But dwarfism exists, and people with dwarfism need jobs. Combine that with a serious problem of discrimination against little people, and you could have a problem on your hands. For China, the controversial solution is the “Kingdom of the Little People.”
Located near the city of Kunming, the capital of the Chinese province of Yunnan, the Kingdom of the Little People is intended to be a tourist attraction — a theme park, of sorts, where everyone (except the visitors) is short. In order to work at the Kingdom, one must be no taller than 4’3″ tall, eliminating some of the ‘taller” people with dwarfism. As of early 2010, the park employed 100 such people and its owner aims to employ 1,000 total, according to Reuters. Those people hired by the Kingdom are offered housing in a dormitory-like environment customized for people of their short stature, and most are given a role as a performer inside the Kingdom.
Tourists pay a hefty sum for the honor of visiting — tickets cost about $10 (in yuan equivalent), an enormous amount given that per capita GDP in China is only about $5,000. The show they receive? The performers pretend to live in mushroom-like huts and act as if they’re members of a fiefdom lost in a Vaudevillian nightmare. Performers of short stature don tutus and put on a tongue-in-cheek version of Swan Lake. “Shaolin monks” put on a faux combat performance. A contingent of guardsmen march around the grounds, acting (as part of the motif) while doubling as crowd control. And ruling this whole kingdom — at least, in the context of the show — is a 3’3″ emperor, draped in a gold tunic and protected by bodyguards, as seen above.
