罗平县马街镇 Majie Town in Luoping County, Qujing
Jinshan Bai Autonomous Township (金山白族乡) is located to the east of Gucheng District (古城区), Lijiang City, Yunnan Province. The township government is only 0.5 kilometers away from the county town. The total area of the township is 276 square kilometers, and it administers 10 administrative villages and 79 natural villages.
Population and Ethnic Groups
As of the end of 2004, the total number of households in the township was 6,166, with a total population of 24,179. Among them, there were 23,352 agricultural population and 827 non-agricultural population. The township is home to a diverse ethnic composition, including 14,862 Naxi people, 1,619 Han people, 7,031 Bai people, 334 Lisu people, and 333 people from other ethnic groups.
Climate and Agriculture
Jinshan Bai Autonomous Township has an average altitude of 2,400 meters, with an average annual temperature of 11.5℃ and an annual rainfall of 1,100 millimeters. The township has a wide area for crop cultivation, with a total grain output reaching 12,358 tons. The main crops include rice, corn, and wheat. In addition, there are economic crops such as apples, plums, and pears.
Economy and Industry
The township has 1,100 township enterprises, with 3,730 employees and a total enterprise income of 81 million yuan. The total rural economic income reached 36.15 million yuan, and the fiscal revenue was 2.14 million yuan. The forest coverage rate is as high as 55.5%, with a total forest area of 24,415.9 hectares.
Culture and Customs
The Bai people in Jinshan Bai Autonomous Township maintain a rich tradition of ethnic culture. They prefer white clothing. Men often wrap their heads with white or blue headscarves, wear cross-collared shirts or black vests, and long trousers. Women’s clothing is more diverse. Bai women in Dali area often wrap their heads with embroidered cloth or colorful towels, wear white tops, and black velvet vests. The township also has unique tea cultures such as roasted tea and three-course tea, as well as a hospitable tradition of entertaining distinguished guests with three-course tea.
Education and Healthcare
The township has one central primary school and 12 complete primary schools, with a student enrollment rate and retention rate of 100%. The township health center has 20 beds, two medical devices worth more than 10,000 yuan, and 14 health technicians. All 10 village committees have village clinics.
Jiuhe Bai Autonomous Township (九河白族乡) is located in the southwestern part of Yulong Naxi Autonomous County (玉龙纳西族自治县), Yunnan Province. It is bordered by Tai’an Township (太安乡) to the east, connected to Jianyang Town (剑阳镇) of Jianchuan County in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture to the south, adjacent to Shitou Township (石头乡) to the west, and neighbors Shigu Town (石鼓镇) and Longpan Township (龙蟠乡) to the north. The total area of the township is 358.7 square kilometers. It administers 10 village committees, including Zhonggu (中古), Guanshang (关上), Diantou (甸头), Zhonghe (中和), Jinpu (金普), Beigao (北高), Nangao (南高), Longying (龙应), Jiuhe (九河), and Heyuan (河源), with 75 village groups. The township government is located in Baihan Market (白汉场), 50 kilometers away from the urban area, at an altitude of 2,400 meters.
Population and Ethnic Groups
As of the end of 2006, the township had a total of 7,007 households and a population of 25,517, including 12,793 males and 12,472 females. Six ethnic groups reside in the area: Bai, Naxi, Pumi, Lisu, Tibetan, and Han. The Bai ethnic group accounted for 12,803 people, the Naxi ethnic group for 9,962 people, and other ethnic groups for 2,752 people. The natural population growth rate was 0.09‰, with a population density of 64 people per square kilometer.
Climate and Topography
The topography of Jiuhe Bai Autonomous Township extends from north to south, with a narrow northern part and a wider southern part. The maximum east-west distance is 28 kilometers, and the maximum north-south distance is 32.25 kilometers. The highest elevation in the township is 4,207 meters, while the lowest is 2,090 meters. Located in a high-altitude area with a low latitude, the township features a South Asian Plateau monsoon climate. Dry northwesterly winds prevail in winter and spring, while humid southwesterly winds affect the area in summer and autumn. The dry season is longer than the wet season.
Economy and Industry
Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy in Jiuhe Bai Autonomous Township. The primary crops include corn, rice, potatoes, and flue-cured tobacco. The township has three types of terrain: mountainous areas, semi-mountainous areas, and flatlands, each suitable for growing different crops and economic plants. In addition to agriculture, the township actively develops animal husbandry and forestry.
History and Culture
Jiuhe Bai Autonomous Township has a long history and has been a key stop along the “Southern Silk Road” and the “Tea Horse Road” since ancient times. In 1244, it was an important battlefield where the Dali Kingdom resisted the Mongol army. Historical relics such as the Gahe Pagoda (高禾塔) bear witness to this period. The township is also known as the “Hometown of Craftsmen,” with craftsmen in every village, especially renowned for its carpenters. The long-term harmonious coexistence of multiple ethnic groups has created a unique Jiuhe culture.
Tourism Resources
Jiuhe Bai Autonomous Township is rich in natural and cultural landscapes. It features beautiful pastoral scenery, with golden rice fields and rice field fish (rice flower fish) as local specialties. Additionally, historical sites such as the former site of the Wenchang Palace (文昌宫), which opened a private school in 1910, can be found in the area.

Geographic Location
Ala Yi Ethnic Town is located in the eastern suburbs of Kunming, Yunnan Province, 8 kilometers away from the city center. It is bordered by Dabanqiao Town to the east, Luoyang Town in Chenggong County to the south, Jinma Subdistrict Office to the northwest, and Xiaobanqiao Subdistrict Office and Kunming Economic and Technological Development Zone to the southwest.
Historical Background
Ala Yi Ethnic Town has a long history and is the only ethnic minority town in Guandu District. It is named after the Yi ethnic group (Sani branch) residing in Ala Forest. During the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to Kunming County. In 1950, it was under the jurisdiction of Kunming County’s Third District. In 1953, it was incorporated into Kunming City’s Sixth District. In 1956, it became part of Guandu District. In 1958, it was established as Ala Commune. In 1984, it was renamed Ala Office, and in 1987, it was officially designated as Ala Yi Ethnic Town.

Natural Environment
Xiyang Yi Ethnic Town features a complex terrain with significant altitude differences, ranging from the highest point at Leida Mountain (2,563 meters) to the lowest at Xiaoshiban River (1,340 meters). This creates a unique microclimate, with fertile soil in the river valleys due to the lower altitude, longer sunshine, and shorter frost periods. The area is known for its high-quality agricultural products such as glutinous rice, sunflower seeds, and red chili peppers.
Traditional Villages
Xiyang Yi Ethnic Town is home to several traditional villages that have been listed in the Chinese Traditional Villages Directory. These villages, such as Muzha Village, Yizige Village, and Duhe Village, preserve traditional Yi ethnic architecture and cultural heritage. The villages are characterized by their well-preserved traditional houses, stone walls, and cultural decorations, reflecting the rich Yi ethnic traditions.
Infrastructure and Protection
In recent years, the town has made significant efforts to protect and restore its traditional villages. Infrastructure improvements, public environmental enhancements, and the preservation of ancient buildings have been implemented. These efforts have helped maintain the historical environment and traditional style of the town, ensuring its sustainable development.

In April, glossy ganoderma(Linzhi mushroom) start sprouting. At this booming season, we visited The Wild Glossy Ganoderma Artificial Cultivation Demonstration Base in Jingping Township nearby the Ailao Mountain National Nature Reserve, southwest Yunnan’s Jingdong Yi Autonomous County.
Wu Jianshao is from Zhejiang University and now serves as temporary vice mayor of Jingdong County. He told us the university is helping Jingdong fight poverty by taking advantage of local wild mushroom resources to develop an ecological industry.
In the green houses, we saw fleshy shoots of glossy ganoderma growing well. “These are improved varieties and they can release more ganoderma spores,” said Ye Dafu, a local villager and also a manager of the demonstration base.
“Ganoderma spores powder has good effect for health care,” said Ye. Accoring to him, glossy ganoderma begin to release spores in June, which are their seeds. But in the past, it was impossible to effectively collect the spores of wild glossy ganoderma. In artificial cultivation, glossy ganoderma are planted in green houses and each of them is bagged in order to collect the spores.
On the basis of wild glossy ganoderma domestication, Jingdong now is exploring a new model of poverty alleviation by developing a whole-industry chain which includes domestication, ecological planting, ganoderma spores powder process and brand sale. Currently, the county has set up four glossy ganoderma ecological planting bases. With planting area of 6.67 hectares and an output value of 15 million yuan, the project now covers 200 local households.
