Deqin County, also called Deqen County, located in the northwest of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province. 80% of its 55,000 inhabitants are Tibetan. Throughout its years of development, local endeavors for advancement have been rewarded with a great rise in area living standards. Nowadays, this is a tourist destination, however, the transportation is not very convenient.
There is only a small regional airport, Diqing Shangri-La Airport (DIG) located about four kilometers (2.49 miles) southeast of Shangri-La County and serves the airlines traveling to Kunming. After getting to Shangrila, tourists can take the shuttle bus to Deqin or rent a car to.

There are two ways of getting to Deqin from Kunming by coach. At Kunming West Bus Station, tourists can take the long-distance bus to Deqin county which departs at 19:00 with the duration of 23.5 hours. Alternatively, taking a coach from Kunming West Bus Station to Shangrila Bus Station and then transfer to Deqin county is also available. The departure time is 09:30, 14:00, 19:00(sleeper bus), 20:00(sleeper bus), 20:30(sleeper bus). The journey is about 9.5-15.5 hours.
At present, there is no railway connecting Deqin with Kunming. The Yunnan-Tibet Railway under planning stretches to Lhasa in Tibet from Kunming in Yunnan Province. After the completion of Yunnan-Tibet Railway, it’s more convenient for tourists traveling from Kunming to Deqin County.

Due to the geographic position and population composition, it is full of tourism resources, including natural sceneries, minority culture and Tibetan culture. While because of the complicated topography and high altitude, transportation of Deqin is not that convenient. It is 183 kilometers away from Shangrila city.
Bus is the main means of transportation for locals and tourists to get around in Shangrila. There are 5 regular buses running from Shangri-La to Deqin County every day with the fare of 68 CNY and duration of 5 hours, which departs at 8:20, 9:20, 10:30, 12:30 and 14:30.
Renting a car is suitable to gain a flexible and comfortable travel. If there are enough people in your group to share the expenses, it is better for you to rent a car with an experienced drive and a tour guide. If you want to have more fun on the way, renting a car is highly recommended. On the way, there are famous attractions like Nixi Village, Benzilan, Great Bend of Jinsha River, Baima Snow Mountain, Dongzhulin Monastery, Feilai Temple, etc. the driver of chartering car can stop for you to enjoy the scenery and take photos. Deqin County is located in the northwestern part of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It lies in the Hengduan Mountains area of northwestern Yunnan, at the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau and at the junction of Yunnan, Sichuan, and Tibet. The county spans from 98°3’56″ to 99°32’20″ east longitude and from 27°33’44″ to 29°15’2″ north latitude. To the southwest, it borders Weixi Lisu Autonomous County and Gongshan Derung and Nu Autonomous County in Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture. To the northwest, it is connected to Mangkang County and Zogang County in Changdu City, and Zayü County in Nyingchi City, Tibet Autonomous Region. To the southeast, it faces Batang County and Derong County in Sichuan Province and Shangri-La City in Yunnan Province across the Jinsha River. The total area of the county is 8,364 square kilometers.
Dubbed as “God’ Palette”, Dongchuan Red Land is a rising star which attracts more and more photography enthusiasts and casual travelers home and abroad. With an altitude of 1,800–2,600 meters, it’s located in Huashitou County, under the jurisdiction of Dongchuan district of Kunming, 250 km northeast of Kunming downtown, which is the most typical and the most featured red soil in Yunnan Plateau. It is still an untouched place, for its fresh air, fabulous views and superb color landscapes.
Tourists can see different scenery in different seasons. From May to June, it is a colorful season with potato flowers and the golden wheat. With various crop colors, plus the red earth and blue sky, it’s one of the best photography season. Tourists can capture strongly red fields just after ploughing and before the crops grow. From September to December, it is another best time for photo taking. It is the harvest time and some fields will be turned over for new crops.
At Kunming North Bus Station, there are 2 daily buses running to Fazhe passing by Dongchuan Red Earth. The departure time is 07:50 and 08:30. You need to let the driver know where you want to get off, Huagou or Hua Shi Tou, etc. The journey will take about 3-4 hours. Now there are direct scenic buses directly to Qingzhen Laodifang(清真老地方) of Dongchuan Red Land, departing at 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00 respectively from Kunming (Nanyao) Bus Station(昆明南窑汽车客运站) and Kunming South Bus Station(昆明南部客运站).
The same at Kunming North Bus Station, tourists can take the bus to Dongchuan District which run between 7:00am and 7:00pm with a 3.5h journey. Then you need to transfer a local bus going to the Red Earth Scenic Area from Dongchuan District. There are only two daily buses going to Dongchuan Red Land – one starting at 8:00am and the other at 12:50pm. Alternatively, you can also take or share a taxi to the Red Land.
