Jiangcheng (江城) is the only border city in Yunnan Province (云南省) that shares borders with Vietnam (越南) and Laos (老挝). It is famously known as “a city connecting three countries.”
Geographic Significance of Jiangcheng
Jiangcheng is named after the convergence of three rivers: the Manlao River (曼老江), Lixian River (李仙江), and Mengye River (勐野江), which flow around the city. It is also home to a significant population of the Lahu ethnic group (拉祜族). The region is well-known for the song “A Ge A Mei Qing Yi Chang” (阿哥阿妹情谊长) from the beloved film “Lusheng Love Song” (芦笙恋歌), which beautifully reflects the culture of this area.
Jiangcheng County (江城县) is located in the southern part of Yunnan Province, between the longitudes of 101°14′ to 102°19′ east and the latitudes of 22°20′ to 22°36′ north. To the east, it borders Lüchun County (绿春县) in Honghe Prefecture (红河州); to the southeast, it meets Vietnam; to the south, it shares a border with Laos (国境线长183公里，中越段67公里，中老段116公里); to the west, it is adjacent to Mengla County (勐腊县) and Jinghong City (景洪市) in Xishuangbanna Prefecture (西双版纳州); to the northwest, it connects with Cuiyun District (翠云区) and Pu’er County (普洱县); and to the north, it faces Mojiang County (墨江县) across the river. The county stretches approximately 112 kilometers from east to west and 64 kilometers from north to south, covering a total area of 3,544 square kilometers. The county seat, Menglie Town (勐烈镇), sits at an elevation of 1,119 meters. It is located 520 kilometers by road from the provincial capital, Kunming (昆明), and 145 kilometers from the government seat in Cuiyun District.
Self-Driving Tour Route from Jinghong City to Jiangcheng County
Driving Route: The total distance is approximately 277.5 kilometers.
Starting Point: Jinghong City (景洪市)
- Driving Directions Within Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture (西双版纳傣族自治州)
- Depart from the starting point heading directly south, driving 340 meters along Galan Middle Road (嘎兰中路), then turn left onto Xuanwei Avenue (宣慰大道).
- Continue straight on Xuanwei Avenue for 20 meters, then continue straight again onto Xuanwei Avenue.
- Drive 130 meters along Xuanwei Avenue, pass by the New Dragon Department Store (新龙百货店) on the right after about 160 meters. At the second exit, head towards Xuanwei Avenue / Forest Park / Wild Elephant Valley (野象谷) / Olive Dam (橄榄坝) and continue straight on Xuanwei Avenue.
- Travel 1.9 kilometers on Xuanwei Avenue and continue straight.
- Drive 250 meters on Xuanwei Avenue, then at the third exit, turn slightly left onto the Kunming-Mohe Expressway (昆磨高速), heading towards G8511 / Forest Park / Wild Elephant Valley / Botanical Garden (植物园).
- Drive straight for 50 meters on the Kunming-Mohe Expressway.
- Continue on the Kunming-Mohe Expressway for 113.8 kilometers, taking the Pu’er exit. Turn slightly left to merge onto the ramp.
- Drive 660 meters along the ramp, then continue straight onto Cha Yuan Road (茶苑路).
- Continue on Cha Yuan Road for 3.8 kilometers, heading towards Si Jiang Road (思江路) / Tea Expo Garden (茶博苑), and proceed straight onto Si Jiang Road.
- Drive 860 meters straight along Si Jiang Road.
- Drive 200 meters along Si Jiang Road, at the first exit, head towards Cha Yuan Road / Jiangcheng County (江城县) and continue straight on Si Jiang Road.
- Travel 76.1 kilometers on Si Jiang Road and then turn slightly right onto S214.
Driving Directions Within Pu’er City (普洱市)
- Continue along S214 for 39.6 kilometers, then take a right turn at the fork onto Si Jiang Road.
- Drive 32.6 kilometers on Si Jiang Road, slightly turning left towards Lüchun County (绿春县) / Mojiang County (墨江县), then merge onto S218.
- Continue along S218 for 6.9 kilometers until you reach your destination (on the left side of the road).
Final Destination: Guoqing Township (国庆乡)

Jianchuan (剑川县) is a county in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture located in the northwest of Yunnan Province. The wood carvings in Jianchuan are known all over the world. It is about 126 kilometers away from Dali City and 464 kilometers away from Kunming. In Jianchuan, transportation is very convenient and tourists can get there by long-distance bus or car-rental.
How to Get to Jianchuan County from Kunming?
By Bus
At Kunming West Bus Station, there are two regular buses departing at 9:30 am and 19:00 pm to Jianchuan Bus Station. The journey takes 5.5 hours for CNY 185. Kunming West Bus Station is located at No.18, Yining Road, Xishan District, Kunming.

Being around 80 kilometers from the Li’jiang City (Gu’cheng District)（丽江-古城区）, Jian’chuan County（剑川县）is known for its ancient temple, as well as its marvelous mountains. It is also one of the most famous scenic areas in Yunnan, which can be easily reached by coach, train, and plane.
How to Get to Jianchuan County from Lijiang City (Gucheng District)
1. By Long-Distance Coach
Everyday, there will be about 14 coaches departing from Lijiang Coach Terminal（丽江客运站）at 08:20, 09:10, 10:00, 10:40, 11:20, 12:00, 12:40, 13:20, 14:00, 14:40, 15:20, 16:00, 16:40, 17:30, and the ticket price is CNY 25-28. The journey takes around 2 hours.

No. 25, Kang’zhong Road, Gu’cheng District, Lijiang City, Yunnan Province
This coach terminal can be reached by taking City Bus No.16 (CNY 1-5), and the taxi fare from downtown area is around CNY 8 (according to the Chinese Uber, Didi). The expected time of arrival will be around 10 mins.
2. By Regular-Speed Train
Please be noted that you will still need to transfer to Jian’chuan County（剑川县） after you have arrived at Dali Railway Station（大理火车站）.
Everyday, there will be about 2 trains departing from Lijiang Railway Station（丽江火车站）, and the schedule is listed as follows:

3. By Plane
Please be noted that you will still need to transfer to Jian’chuan County（剑川县） after you have arrived at Dali Airport（大理机场）.
However, it is absolutely important for you to reach a deal with the coach or taxi driver before departure.

This airport can be reached by taking City Bus No. 27 (CNY 3) and Airport Express (CNY 20), and the taxi fare from downtown area is around CNY 82 (according to the Chinese Uber, Didi). The expected time of arrival will be around 35 mins. For your information, the Airport Express departs from Domestic Arrivals (Gate 3), and terminates at Min’hang Lan’tian Hotel (downtown).
