Chinese Name: 禄丰县苗族花山节
English Name: Huashan Festival of Miao Ethnic Minority in Lufeng County, Chuxiong
Location: Hongtushan Village of Qinfeng Town in Lufeng County/禄丰勤丰镇红土山村
The Flower Mountain Festival is a cherished tradition among the Miao ethnic group, celebrated by Miao communities in central Yunnan Province on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which aligns with the Duanwu Festival. This festival boasts a profound historical legacy. Legend has it that during ancient times in China’s tribal era, conflicts among tribes led to the defeat of the Miao chieftain. Faced with adversity, the Miao people were forced to leave their homes and wander, becoming separated from their families. In a bid to reunite, they selected a lofty mountain where they erected a flower pole adorned with red silk atop its summit. Gathering around this pole, they played lusheng—a traditional wind instrument—and performed lusheng dances, expressing both sorrow and joy.
Word of the flower pole and the sound of the lusheng reached dispersed relatives, prompting them to spread the news far and wide. Soon, people from all directions flocked to the site, resulting in a joyous reunion of long-lost kin. Hence, every fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Miao people erect a flower pole on an open highland, gathering to play lusheng and dance lusheng dances. This annual tradition has solidified into the Flower Mountain Festival of the Miao ethnic group.
The Flower Mountain Festival carries deep cultural significance, symbolizing themes of reunion, unity, and communal gatherings. It serves as a poignant celebration of familial reunions and mutual blessings, embodying the unity, harmony, and aspirations for a better life that resonate across generations of Miao people.
Hosted by: Cuihua Town, Lufeng County. Event Date: June 14, 2021. Event Theme: 2021 Flower Mountain Festival.
Bullfighting stands out as one of the liveliest activities during the Miao Flower Mountain Festival, attracting participants from diverse ethnic backgrounds who gather together to cheer and revel in the excitement.
The Miao Flower Mountain Festival in Lufeng County is an annual event held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, coinciding with the Duanwu Festival. Festivities include bullfighting, flower pole worship, lusheng dancing, flower pole climbing, cockfighting, crossbow shooting, and more. In recent years, with its grand scale and vibrant atmosphere, the Flower Mountain Festival has emerged as a splendid emblem of ethnic cultural tourism in Lufeng County.

Southwest China’s Yunnan province has effectively served the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in recent years by integrating into the Belt and Road construction and cooperating practically with South and Southeast Asian countries, according to a news release in Beijing on April 24.
Yunnan has played a key role in the cooperative mechanisms of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC), the Greater Mekong Subregional (GMS) Cooperation and the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Regional Cooperation, said the presser held on the occasion of the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.
With bilateral partnerships forged between the province and the five Mekong countries, Yunnan served the road of peace by making more friends of cooperation and furthered opening up by launching 81 international and regional air routes.
Also, the province prospered and invested USD 10.4 billion in 58 countries and regions and explored a road of innovation by giving new impetus to growth. It increased people-to-people exchanges by hosting 18,800 international students from neighboring countries.
Bordering three ASEAN countries and connected to the sea and ocean via river systems, Yunnan faces South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Asia, sits near the Beibu Gulf and the Bay of Bengal, and shoulders the Pacific and Indian oceans.
In Jiangcheng Hani and Yi Autonomous County, China’s border is bordered by Vietnam’s border and Laos’ border. The top of the “Ten-Tier Mountain” in the southern part of Qushui Township is a place where you can see the three Nations. On the top of the mountain, there is a national boundary pillar, just in China, Vietnam, and Laos. The dividing line between the three countries has a special tourism value of “looking at the Three Nations at a glance” and the landscape is very rich.
The top of the mountain is 1,400 meters above sea level. There are forests and grasslands interlaced and thick on the mountain. From 800-1400 meters, the animals and plants are vertically distributed. The mountain foot and mountainside belong to tropical, with wild cattle, elephants, green peacocks and ferns. The top of the mountain is subtropical. There are waterfalls with a height of tens of meters on the mountainside. There are tropical fruit gardens at the foot of the mountain: mango garden, pineapple garden, litchi garden, longan garden, etc. Visitors can climb to the top of the mountain to see the scenery of the Three Nations. You can enter the mountainside to watch the waterfall and enter the orchard to enjoy the big natural and delicious food, experience the endless fun of natural ecology.
Jiangcheng County’s “one city links three countries” is connected to Wude County in Fengsari Province of Laos and Meng Nian County in the Dianbian Province of Vietnam. The border line is 183 kilometers long. The border pillar, located on the top of the 10th floor of the mountain, which is the No.0 border pillar, a dividing line between China, Vietnam and Laos.
The ten-story mountain, as its name suggests, is made up of ten layers of mountain. The main peak of the ten-storey mountain is 1,864 meters above sea level. The boundary pillar of No. 0 stands on the top of the highest peak. From the foot of the mountain to the top of the mountain, people can experience the scene of “the ten different days”, and the rugged roads on the mountain have never been thought of before by visiters.
The shape of the boundary pillar No. 0 is different from the general two-sided boundary pillar, but a triangular prism. As the leader of the first Chinese demarcation team, Chen Huabiao originally designed three schemes for the shape of the No. 0 boundary pillar. “The first type is the signpost, 60 meters high, to cast in steel, the second is a large monument, 2 meters high, made of granite, the third is a small monument, just like other boundary pillars, no more than 2 meters high.”
A boundary pillar divides three countries and is a rare spectacle that is rare in China even in the world. In fact, the country’s “one county links three countries” is not only Jiangcheng, but “one mountain links three countries” can only be seen in Jiangcheng. “So special, if you don’t build an imposing boundary pillar, what’s the point?” Therefore, Chen Huabiao most hopes to build a signpost.
There are no airports in Jiangcheng County. Visitors can take a plane to Simao District, Puer, then take a long-distance bus to Jiangcheng County.
Pu’er Railway Station is the middle station of the Yumo Railway under construction and an important station for the Laos section of the Trans-Asian Railway. It is expected to be put into use by 2020.

The ancient town of Jianchuan, Shizhong Mountain grottos, Shaxi ancient town, Jian Lake… When it comes to Jianchuan County in west Yunnan’s Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, these are the must-visit destinations. Each of them is like a scroll of painting and represents a kind of lifestyle. In addition, Jianchuan’s charm is also in its folk culture and delicacies.
On March 14 (February 8 of lunar calendar), we came to Jianchuan to participate in the folk cultural activity “Prince Meeting”. What we felt was that: the activity was so attractive, delicacies tasty, but time was too short for us.
As soon as we arrive at the Shilong Village at the foot of Shibao Mountain, we heard the pleasant singing of Bai people. Though the songs were sung in Bai language, the happy melodies and the honest smile of the singers were the best greetings for us.
The villagers, dressed in their traditional Bai costumes, had prepared home-brewed wine for us. Inviting guests to drink wine was their way to express hospitality. And all of these were part of the “Prince Meeting”.
It is said that when Shakyamuni Buddha was still a prince, he traveled and saw the sufferings of human beings on February 8 of lunar calendar. To release them from the sufferings, he founded the Buddhism. Since the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), Jianchuan people have held the“Prince Meeting”on every February 8 of lunar calendar to show their reverences to the Buddha and pray for happiness.
“In Dali, there are many kinds of folk cultural activities, like the singing gathering at Shibao Mountain. These activities have integrated with tourism, increasing the participation experiences of visitors,” said Mr. Zhao Jianjun, the head of Dali Branch, Yunnan Provincial Tourism Planning and Research Institute.
Ten years ago, Shilong villager Li Sikun began to build the brand of “Shanlaotui Ham”. The ham now has become a kind of popular green food and was once reported by CCTV.
Walking into the yard of Li Sikun, we saw hams suspending from the ceiling. “These have been ordered, ”Li said proudly. According to him, hams, which have fermented for three years, can be eaten raw. As more and more tourists come to visit Jianchuan, Li also has opened a restaurant in the county town and ham supply always fails to meet the demand in the restaurant.
Drinking rice wine, tasting delicacies, enjoying the singing and dances, we found that we were sitting in a village surrounded by lush mountains and situated beside the clear water. No doubt, it was a pleasant journey to Shilong Village.
“Jianchuan boasts beautiful natural landscapes and has profound culture. In the future, we will promote the integration of culture and tourism and provide unique experience for tourists,” said Zhong Hongtao, General Manager of Jianchuan Aoyun Cultural and Tourism Development Company, which is entrusted with the development of tourism projects in the county.

Yueqin is a kind of traditional music instrument of Chinese people. “Yue”in Chinese literally means “moon”, and “Qin”represents the stringed plucked instrument. “Yueqin”together is the four-stringed moon-shaped Chinese mandolin.
Located in central Yunnan’s Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Nanhua County was known as Zhennan Prefecture in ancient times. Here, the Zhennan Yueqin has risen to fame across the province since the Qing Dynasty(1644-1912). Now, the craft of making Zhennan Yueqin has been put into the list of the provincial-level intangible cultural heritage. And Local Yi people like to play Yueqin as accompaniments to their singing and dances during celebrations and festivals.
Born in 1963 in Chahe Village, Nanhua, Li Shuming has showed his artistic talents in singing, dancing and playing music instrument since childhood. Among all the instruments, Yueqin has given him a deep impression.
Li Shuming was raised in a carpenter family and is skilled in making Zhennan Yueqin. Starting 1997, Li has improved his skills of making Yueqin. Now, the instrument he makes is regarded as the best in the province. In 2010, Li was designated as the provincial-level inheritor of the craft of making Zhennan Yueqin.
According to Li, it takes at least half a month to make a Zhennan Yueqin. He is very picky about the raw materials including the wood, strings and paint in order to make high-quality Yueqin. The making is very complicated and goes through more than ten procedures. From dissecting the wood to designing and carving patterns, from painting to stringing, every step is completed manually. Hence a low output each year.
To pass on the craft, Li receives dozens of apprentices, some of whom has already become masters. The Zhennan Yueqin Li makes not only sells well in China, but also is popular in foreign countries. On behalf of Yunnan, Li has participated in exhibitions held in first-tier Chinese cities like Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing. And he is making innovative efforts in protecting and inheriting the craft of making Zhennan Yueqin.
