Baoshan Mosque is one of the mosques in Baoshan City, Yunnan Province. It was initially built in the 25th year of the Dao Guang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1845). The current mosque was rebuilt in the 18th year of the Guangxu reign (1892), renovated in 1922, and expanded with classrooms in the southern courtyard in 1924. The total area covers 2.5 mu, and the prayer hall is designed in the traditional Chinese Xieshan style, with a building area of 175 square meters.

Historical Development

Early History

In the 25th year of the Dao Guang reign of the Qing Dynasty (1845), the Muslim community was systematically massacred by local officials and village groups, with only a few hundred survivors.

Renovation and Reconstruction

The current mosque was rebuilt in the 18th year of the Guangxu reign (1892), renovated in 1922, and expanded with classrooms in the southern courtyard in 1924. The total area covers 2.5 mu, and the prayer hall is designed in the traditional Chinese Xieshan style, with a building area of 175 square meters.

Scale and Structure

The north and south wings consist of two stories with a total of 12 rooms. The southern courtyard has 15 rooms across three sides, while the eastern courtyard has 8 rooms on two sides. The total building area exceeds 1450 square meters, with a layout that is casual and natural, featuring little ornamentation. During the “Cultural Revolution,” the entire complex was occupied and was gradually returned by 1991. During the Republic of China period, the famous Imam Na Runzhang served here for 16 years, and educational activities were flourishing. Currently, there are approximately over a thousand Hui Muslim worshippers in this mosque.
