History and Culture

Fengchunling Township (逢春岭乡) has a rich historical background. It has long been a settlement area for ethnic minorities, primarily the Hani (哈尼族) and Yi (彝族) peoples, who have nurtured a unique ethnic culture here over generations. The township’s administrative status has evolved throughout history, from being under the rule of ancient tribal chiefs to becoming part of the modern administrative system. The local way of life, centered on terraced rice farming, reflects a deep harmony between humans and nature. These terraced fields are not only a hallmark of the local economy but also a symbol of cultural heritage passed down from ancestors.

Local Customs

Traditional Festivals

One of the most important festivals is the Hani “Angmatu” (昂玛突) Festival. During this time, respected elders lead villagers in solemn rituals to pray for favorable weather and a good harvest in the coming year. People wear traditional, colorful clothing, prepare offerings such as pork and beef, and host a long street banquet where every household contributes dishes. The entire village joins in the feast, celebrating and sharing blessings in a joyful atmosphere.

The Yi Torch Festival is equally vibrant. At night, villagers light torches and dance around bonfires, singing and celebrating together. The flames symbolize the expulsion of evil spirits and the welcoming of light and good fortune.

Traditional Dances and Music

The Hani “Lezuo Dance” (乐作舞) is a lively collective dance where participants join hands and form circles, dancing with dynamic and cheerful movements that express joy and optimism.

The Yi “Tobacco Box Dance” (烟盒舞) is distinctive. Dancers hold small tobacco boxes and produce crisp rhythmic sounds by tapping them, performing graceful and powerful dance steps that showcase the artistic charm of Yi culture.

Traditional Handicrafts

Hani embroidery is known for its intricate craftsmanship. The designs, inspired by nature and folklore, are rich in symbolism and artistry, with every stitch reflecting the dedication of Hani women.

The Yi are skilled in bamboo weaving, producing beautiful and practical items such as baskets, stools, and trays. These crafts highlight the industriousness and creativity of the Yi people.
