Day 1 Arrive in Kunming

Day 2 Kunming-Chuxiong-Dali

In the morning, drive to Chuxiong and visit Yiren Ancient Town, Chuxiong Museum and enjoy the Yi ethnic life with local people. Then drive to Dali. Visit Dali Old Town. Walk around the Foreigner Street and enjoy the relax time with local people. After climbing up to the City Wall of Dali, you will have panoramic view of the Erhai Lake.

Day 3 Dali

Take the morning flight to Dali which is a historically and culturally famous city of China, is renowned for her historical interest and Bai ethnic culture. You visit the Three Pagodas in Chongshen Monastery which has a history of over 1,800 years located at the foot of Cangshan Mountain facing to the Erhai Lake. Three Pagodas are made of three ancient independent pagodas forming a symmetrical triangle.

After lunch, you’ll cruise in Erhai Lake by the small boat to the Jinsuo Islet in the east Erhai Lake. There are 200 Bai ethnic families around 1000 people in Jinsuo Island. In Erhai Lake cruise, you will enjoy the green Cangshan Mountain and the Three Pagodas from a far as well as lots of birds and seagulls flying over the lake.

After that, you will head for Xizhou Town to fully appreciate Bai-style traditional architectural courtyards, taste their fragrant Three-Course Tea and explore their distinctive culture. Visit Zhoucheng Village and the Bai people’s Tie-dying cloth workshop where you can take some special souvenir with the Bai ethnic style.

Day 4 Dali-Weishan-Dali

After breakfast, you’ll be driven to visit Weishan Old Town. Weishan old town was the cradle of Nanzhao kingdom(a kindom established by Yi Minority), the history can be traced back to 7th centuary. Its a very nice old town and not touristic. It was a important town on the ancient tea and horse road. You will also enjoy the traditional Bai people’s building design.

Then visit Donglianhua Village in Weishan County.These villages were founded by Muslim soldiers from Central Asia sent to Yunnan by the first emperor of China’s Mongol dynasty of the Yuan(1271-1368). During the Ming and Qing dynasties, they became involved in trade as caravan leaders on the Tea and Horse Road (茶马古道). The courtyards and mansions of village of Donglianhua (东莲花) shows how successful these Chinese Muslims traders were.

Drive back to Dali for overnight.

Day 5 Dali-Shaxi-Lijiang

Drive from Dali to Shaxi Old Town. Walk around this town. Explore the ancient culture and architectures. The remains of an ancient market town and once an active trade stop on the Southern Silk Road that connected Tibet and China with Southeast Asia and on to Europe. This road is actually older than the more famous Silk Road (in the North), predating it by at least 300 years. Shaxi has been listed by the World Monuments Fund as one of the world’s 100 most endangered sites.

In the afternoon, explore Lijiang Old Town. Lijiang Old Town has a history more than 800 years; it was listed as the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997. Here you will see the wonderful wooden architecture of Naxi ethnic people.

Day 6 Lijiang

Enjoy the sunrise of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Lijiang Ancient Town in the morning, drive about 30KM to Ganhaizi Meadow(3100M), you will take the sightseeing bus for a short visiting through the Baishuihe River, take the chairlift up to visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The cableway will be arranged according to the condition of the mountain. You will hike around 1 hours in the original forest in Spruce Meadow (3200M).

After lunch, you will enjoy the Impression Lijiang Ethnic Show directed in Ganhaizi Meadow(3100M). A cultural show demonstrating the traditions and lifestyles of the Naxi, Yi and Bai peoples of the area. The show takes place inside Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Park at 3500m in an outdoor theater specifically designed to showcase the mountain which is used as a backdrop. The production itself was designed by Zhang Yimou, Fan Yue and Wang Chaoge, a cast of over 500 people, and a number of horses.

In the afternoon, you’ll stroll through Baisha Old Town, which is an enchanting traditional Yunnan town. Visit the Baisha Murals about 600 years old, which is one part of the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997.

Day 7 Lijiang-Lugu Lake

In the morning, drive 4-5 hrs on the spectacle mountain road to visit the mysterious Lugu Lake. On the way, enjoy the beautiful view among the huge mountains and rivers. We plan to start your walking from Jin’anqiao Bridge to Shudi along the road at the bank of Yangtze River. You will see the beautiful canon and Yi ethnic people’s villages in the steep mountains. After 1 hour walking in the canon, we will continue the driving and we can stop in many Yi villages.

In the late afternoon, you will take the canoes to visit Liwubi Island and Heiwawu Island in Lugu Lake. Pay a visit toMosuo Culture Museum and learn the Mosuo ethnic custom in the museum. Enjoy the sunset wonder of Luguhu Lake in Luoshui Village. In the evening, take part in Mosuo Bonfire Party with ethnic dance and singing performance.You will dance and sing with Mosuo boys and girls around a big bonfire in the outdoors theatre.

Day 8 Lugu Lake-Baoshan Stone Village

Day 9 Baoshan Stone Village-Daju-Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge-Bendiwan

Drive from Baoshan Stone Village to Daju Township. Take a ferryboat across a river. Then drive to Tina’s Guesthoue in Tiger Leaping Gorge area. You will start your hiking from here. Hike about 1.5 hours to Halfway Guesthouse for overnight. Relax yourself and enoy the beautiful secenery of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Day 10 Bendiwan Village-Nuoyu Village-Qiaotou-Shangrila

Hike from Halfway Guesthouse to Nuoyu Village. On the way, you will pass through a waterfall. You will start the most difficult part trekking to the 28 Zigzag Bends trail and reach the top peak at the elevation of 2670m. Arrive at Nuoyu Village and have lunch at Naxi Family Guesthouse. Hike to Qiaotou Primary School to finish your trekking today.

Drive to Shangri-la in the late afternoon. Upon arrival in Shangri La, you will have entered the Tibetan cultural area and a landscape of barley fields and yaks scattered in the valleys. Walk around Dukezong Ancient Town, an important town of the Ancient Tea-horse Trade Caravan from Yunnan to Tibet and India.

Day 11 Shangrila

In the morning, visit the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan. Songzanlin Monastery has another alias – ‘the little Potala Palace ‘, so named because the whole monastery is in the traditional style with mysterious atmosphere. And afterwards you’ll visit the tranquil Bita Lake & Shudu Lake in Pudacuo National Park. Pudacuo National Park is located in one of the most biologically-diverse regions of the world. While the region comprises only 0.7 percent of China’s land area, but more than 20 percent of the country’s plant species, about one-third of its mammal and bird species and almost 100 endangered species.
Walk down to visit Xiaojiezi Tibetan Village located at the foot of Songzanlin Monastery.

Day 12 Shangrila-Benzilan-Feilaisi

In the morning, drive 4 to 5 hours to Deqin County (3400m altitude) which is 187km away from Zhongdian via Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, where you will be able to view Baima Snow Mountain if the weather is clear, pass the top part of today at 4292m altitude at 156km.

After traversing mountain ranges, you will make a short stop and have lunch at Benzilan town, take some shots on the Moon Bend of Jinsha(Yangtze) River, Dongzhulin monastery and Baima Snow Mountain. The view along the way is fantastic with different kinds of trees, streams down the valley, prayer flags and stupas, and Tibetan villages.

Stay at Feilaisi.

Day 13 Feilaisi-Mingyong Glacier-Xidang

Get up early in the morning, enjoy the magic sunrise of Meili Snow Mountain. Then drive another 1.5 hours to Mingyong village, where you will walk on the trails for about 4km to Mingyong Glaciers of Meili Snow Mountain, walk another one or so, you will get to Tibetan Taizi Monastery-another good spot to view the magnificent Mingyong Glaciers. (optional: You can choose to hire a horse to go up to the glacier on your own expense in order to save your energy).

Drive to Xidang for overnight.

Day 14 Xidang-Yubeng

Early in the morning , you could enjoy the golden mountain ,on top of which the sunrise touches its snow capped peak. weather permitting. After breakfast, drive along Mekong River to reach trail head. You will get off the car at Xidang Village, then hike up to and over a mountain pass to Yubeng, with picnic lunch (5-7 hours, with several steep sections). Arrive in Upper Yubeng village; dinner in a traditional Tibetan living room, overnight in Yubeng. Today you will need a horse to carry your luggage. Stay overnight in local guest house.

Day 15 Yubeng-Ice Lake-Yubeng

Enjoy the sunrise of the Mt. Kawagebo glacier from the guesthouse, then walk up to Binghu Ice Lake of the Meili Snow Mountain. Walk through the original forest from Yubeng Village, you will see some horses and yaks, as well as some wild animals if you are lucky enough. A beautiful river originate from the Glacier Park, walk along the river with some wooden bridges and spruce trees, you will have a wonderful view of Mt. Kawagebo Glacier. At last, arrive at the Ice Lake which is located at the foot of the glacier. Trek back to Upper Yubeng . Stay overnight in local guest house.

Day 16 Yubeng-Holy Waterfall-Yubeng

If the weather is good, we will wake up to a clear view of the Mt.Kawagebo glacier. After breakfast we will hike to the Holy Waterfall (7km, 2-3 hours), from which Yubeng’s name originated. Buddhists coming to this area on pilgrimages circumamnbulate the waterfall 13 times with the belief. Then walk back to Upper Yubeng. Stay overnight in local guest house.

Day 17 Yubeng-Ninong Valley-Cizhong

This morning, you need a horse to carry your luggage. Walk along the least traveled path of Yubeng, from Yubeng Village to Ninong Village. After lunch, drive to Cizhong for overnight. On the way to Cizhong, you will see grand canyon and idyllic secenry.Stop to view at a distance.

Day 18 Cizhong-Gongshan-Bingzhongluo

Drive along the newly built road from Cizhong to Gongshan County,the road is bumpy but the scenery is so fantestic because the view of Mekong River and Nujiang River grand cayons as well as the Biluo Snow Mountain. Arrive in Gongshan County and continue the driving along Nujiang Valley to Bingzhongluo. Stop to visit the First Bend of Nujiang River on the way to Bingzhongluo.

Biluo Snow Mountain is located at Lanping churchyard which I continuous 145KM. There are 15 snow mountains, which stand 4000 meter above sea level. The Laowo Mountain is the most beautiful a highest mountain than the others, which is 4500 meters above sea level. It is 3200 meters higher compared with the Lantsang. The original ecosystem has been preserved. The climate changes unconventionally in the mountain. The flowing waterfall is densely6 covered, edelweiss and lakes are gathered, and it is called the mountain with thousand waterfalls and thousand lakes.

Day 19 Bingzhongluo

You will have a beautiful hiking tour in Bingzhongluo including the attractions of Qiunatong Village,Wuli Village,Dimaluo Village,Chongding Catholic Church and Nujiang River Grand Canyon.

There are easy and beautiful walks to nearby villages along the Nujiang. A few kilometers outside of town, the river widens and cuts through very deep and dramatic gorges. The road hugs the Nujiang and landslides occur from time to time along the way. It is said that the scenery is especially spectacular after rain, however this also increases potential delays and exacerbates the danger from landslides.

The most beautiful part of Nujiang Gorge starts from Binzhongluo, the northernmost town of the Gorge, where the essential attractions of the Nujiang Gorge are located. Hiking is the best way to enjoy the landscape and an average of 2.5 hours is needed for most tourists to reach the famous “Tea Horse Caravan Route.” Renting a mini bus at Bingzhongluo town is an alternative for the less adventurous sightseers.

On the way to the “Tea-Horse Caravan Route”, one can see the 100-year-old Zhongding Catholic Church built and founded by a French missionary. Shimen Pass is another fantastic section of the gorge along with Wengli (also called Wuli), another stunning landscape lying on a beautiful slope along the river bank. Very near to the Wengli, a carved path is seen on the other bank cliff, the so-called “Tea-Horse Caravan Route”, a path used by traders ferrying their goods between Yunnan and Tibet. At the end of the trekking road, an old hanging bridge and a new one-year-old bridge swing side-by-side.

To those wanderlusts, some trekking routes are worthy of spending days or even weeks longer between Gongshan and Bingzhongluo. Getting 90km further west to the Drung River from Gongshan reveal beautiful virgin forests as well as the kind-hearted Drung ethnic people living their old way of life.

Day 20 Bingzhongluo-Gongshan-Dulongjiang

It is 3 hours driving today with the rough road in the virgin forest. Nu ethnic minority lives mainly in Yunnan Province’s Bijiang, Fugong, Gongshan and Lanping counties, which comprise the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture. Others are found in Weixi County in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. The Nu people are mainly engaged in agriculture, but also hunt and gather wild plants. Their main crops include corn, buckwheat, barley, potatoes and beans. Some Nu people support themselves through cottage industries such as weaving, wine brewing, iron forging, etc.

Visit Bukawa Village and enjoy the fantastic scenery of Dulongjiang Valley in the afternoon.

Day 21 Dulongjiang River Valley Hiking

Drive about 30 kilometers southward to Maku Village. Get into Maku Village and start a fantastic trekking trip to Dulongjiang River Region. You will see the Haba Waterfall from Maku Pass and then trek along the virgin forest down to Qinlangdang Village. Arrive in Qinlangdang Village in the afternoon and trek about 1 kilometer to arrive at Haba Waterfall, here is the only way to Myanmar from Dulongjiang River.

Drive back to Kongdang.

Note: There are lots of leeches in the virgin forest in summer, so you should take some medicine to keep them away.

Day 22 Dulongjiang River Valley Hiking

Drive about 30 km to Longyuan Village, visit the original villages as well as the old tattoo women, if you want to take photos for them, you have to give the tips. Come back to Kongdang.

Day 23 Dulongjiang-Gongshan-Liuku

Leave for Gongshan and drive 110 km through the fascinating mountain areas to Fugong. Sightseeing includes a visit to a suspension bridge and a glide cable. Special Lishu food will be served during dinner. In the evening you will take part in a party with the local people.

Return to Liuku. Enjoy your last day at Nujiang Grand Canyon and visit Laomudeng Village and the bathhouse of Lishu minority. It is a tradition to welcome new year that all people take a bath together in the open hot springs by the banks of the river.

Day 24 Liuku-Tengchong

Enjoy your last day at Nujiang Grand canyon and visit Laomudeng Village and the bathhouse of Lishu Nationality. It is a tradition to welcome new year that all people take a bath together in the open hot springs by the banks of the river.

Drive to Tengchong County, visit Nujiang River Bridge in Lujiang Basin, drive along the Gaoli Gongshan Mountain and arrive in Tengchong at noon. After lunch, you will visit Heshun Ancient Town including the Museum of Yunnan-Burmese Anti-Japanese War,Heshun Library, the Archway, Dragon Pool,the Wanlouzi Museum of Native Residence, Wenchang Daoist Palace, Clothes-washing Pavilions,Yuanlong Daoist Pavilion,the Philosopher Ai Siqi’s Former Residence, Guanyin Ancient Spruce Trees an so on.You will enjoy the Lisu Ethnic Show and Lisu Family visiting in Jade Spring Garden at night. You can dance and sing with Lisu ethnic people as well have some snacks.

–“Heshun” means peace and harmony. You could walk leisurely around the historical old town, built in earlier days by overseas Chinese as a location for their retirement. The remaining old town is a very beautiful place with many ornamental structures such as pavilions, memorial halls, archways, and balustrades, and also with lotus ponds and outlands with many birds. The library in this town is worth mentioning-set up in 1924, it possesses over 60,000 volumes of books, many of which are rare editions of ancient works.

Visit Laifeng Mountain National Forest Park in the early morning, climb up to the half mountain, pay a visit to Laifeng Temple bult in Tang dynasty; Climb to the top of the mountain, visit Wenbi Pagoda and the panoramic view of Dianyue Town of Tengchong County.

Visit the Graveyard of the National Heroes, and Dieshuihe Waterfall Park in the town, then drive to Beihai Wetland Park, you will take a small boat to the lake for a nice view. –Tengchong is one of China’s three major geothermal areas, known as “Land Abounding in Geothermal Resources”. There are plenty of springs of hot water and hot vapour, called “Hot Sea”. There are quite a number of hot fields as well. Tengchong is a resort where people can travel, take a bath and have medical treatment. The Hot Sea, with an area of 9 square kilometers, lies 20 kilometers away southwest of the county seat and in the center of the geothermal area.

In the morning drive 1 Km to visit the Dieshuihe Waterfall, 1 Km to visit the Graveyard of the National Heroes. Visit a waterfall in the forest which is not far away from Burma, then visit a Dai village and a Jingpo village. Many travelers come to this market to buy jade products.

Day 28 Mangshi-Yongde

Drive to visit Menglai Grand Canyon. Menglai Grand Canyon is also called Thousand-Meter Gallery , situated at the middle part of the scenic spot. The rock paintings in the area is about 3KM. The cliff is about 80-180 meters high and the highest one is about 280 meters. Some of the cliff surface is ragged like a honeycomb, and some are flat and smooth as if cut by the axe, while some are just like the terraced fields. Due to the erosion of some special materials and the decoration of the climbing plants, the surface the cliff becomes colorful just like a giant rock paintings reflecting the vicissitudes of the nature.

Visit Cangyuan Cliff Painting. The cliff paintings of Cangyuan is said to take on different colors as the time, weather and humidity change. According to the proverb of the local Wa and Thai people that the cliff painting changes three times a day: in the morning the color is red, at noon lighter and in the evening purple. Nowadays the paintings have already been designated as the key historical relic protection unit at the provincial level.

Drive to visit Mengka Dai Ethnic Village.

Day 31 Cangyuan-Shuangjiang-Ximeng

Drive to Menghai. Pay visit to Menghai Tea Factory. The factory is well known for its old raw pu-erh cakes and is highly reputed in the tea industry of China. Further transfer into the old Aini village near Nannuoshan, visit Aini people’s market selling pu’er tea, local vegetables, fruits and hand-made crafts.Then 20 minutes driving to the Aini vellage where we start to walk or start walk up from the foot of the mountain. 2 hours walking on a jungle path to see the old Pu er tea tree plantation in forest and a huge bush tea plantation. All the tea trees are between 300 and 800 years old. At noon, drink local tea and have packed lunch at a place with nice view.

Drive to visit a Dai ethnic village where the local people make paper for wrappering Pu’er Tea with a priminal method.

Transfer to Jinghong City for overnight.

Today , drive to Ganlanba, visit Galanba (Olive Dam) with an elevation of 530 meters above the sea level, a small town where you will see typical Dai bamboo cabins, Dai ethnic villages, Mangting Park, tropical plants and colorful fruits.

Then drive to visit Xishuangbanna Primeval Forest Park. Xishuangbanna Primeval Forest Park, also called Xishuangbanna Virgin Forest Park, is 8 kilometers east of the Jinghong City and north of the Lancang River. Situated in a river valley of 720 to 1,355 meters above sea level, the forest park has an area of 1,700 hectares of which 98％ is covered by trees, and is thus the largest comprehensive ecological place of interest in the prefecture.

Afterwards, visit Dry Dai ethnic village.

Day 3 Shangri-La-Baishuitai

We begin with a short transfer out of town, passing through arid plateau towards Pudacuo National Park where to start the day’s cycling. We set off on the bikes with a downhill stretch on good road and continue cycling through a series of valleys and mountains, as well as a changing rural scenery gradually descending to the village of Baishuitai. Our final stretch of the route brings us through conifer forest. Located below the Haba Snow Mountain (the other side of Tiger Leaping Gorge), Baishuitai is famed for its natural white water terrace created by calcium carbonate depositing from the melting mountain spring water.

Day 4 Baishuitai-Haba Village-Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge

We set off today with a few gentle hills before challenging a more serious climb. Once we reach the top of the pass we will have views of the magnificent Haba Mountain peaks. The highest point is at a dizzying 5,396 meters. With alpine moraine lake, endless clusters of azalea and waterfalls cascading down snow-covered cliffs, the glacier on the Haba Snow Mountain is the southmost glacier in China. We make a short descent into Haba Village, whose resident minorities include Naxi, Hui (Muslim) and Yi peoples, as well as a few Tibetans.

This afternoon, we climb to our next pass then cycle down into the Yangtze River Valley. At the village of Yonke we will turn into the legendary Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the world’s deepest ravines.

Day 5 Tina’s Hostel-Bendiwan Village-Tina’s Hostel

Today you will visit Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. You will spend your half day trekking and half day free in the gorge. After breakfast, trek from Tina’s Guesthouse up to Bendiwan Village, you will visit Guanyin Waterfalls, Bamboo Forest, Guanyin Temple, Wuzhishan (Five Fingers) Mountain, Dashengou Waterfalls, Sheshen Cliffs, Qianyan Stone House.

You will have lunch in Halfway Guesthouse in Bendiwan Village. Halfway Guesthouse is the best position to enjoy the Tiger Leaping Gorge and the thirteen peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. After lunch, trek about one hour down to the road and your driver will pick you up and transfer back to Tina’s Guesthouse. You will be free in the afternoon and explore the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge by yourself.

Day 6 Tina’s Hostel-Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge-Daju

The Lower Section of Tiger Leaping Gorge

In the morning, you will trek down to the Middle Rapids of Jinsha River, you will witness the narrowest part of the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Trek through the Yixiantian(Tiny Sky), which is considered as a very dangerous section of a few dozen meters long. You will trek to the Walnut Grove Garden(Hetaoyuan in Chinese) and drive back to Tina’s Hostel for your lunch. After lunch, ride to the Lower Part of Tiger Leaping Gorge. You will arrive at HaLong Meng Guesthouse and have a panoramic view of Daju before cross the Daju Ferry. Take the bike down to Jinsha River and take the boat to Daju Town.

Day 7 Daju-Jade Dragon Snow Moutain-Lijiang

Sightseeing and Activities:Jade Dragon Snow Moutain, Yake Meadow, Ganhaizi Meadow, Baisha Old Town and Murals, Lijiang Old Town

In the morning, the driver will pick you to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and then take the chairlift up to Yak Meadow(3700 meters), which is the best location to enjoy the nice view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. You will pay a visit to the Lama monastery and walk around the Yak Meadow.

Take the chairlift back to the Bus Station and continue the cycling to Ganhaizi Meadow for your lunch in Dongbala Restaurant. In the afternoon, ride down to Baisha Old Town and visit Baisha Murals. Ride 10 km more to Lijiang Old Town, finish your cycling and visit the night view of Lijiang Old Town.

Day 8 Lijiang

Sightseeing and Activities: Lijiang Old Town, Lashihai Lake, Shuhe Old Town, Black Dragon Pool and Dongba Museum

Around 9 o’clock in the morning, drive 30 minutes to the entrance of the Lashihai Lake. Then start biking around the lake for 2-3 hours and visit some Naxi villages, Zhiyun Monastery, and the different crops in the farmland. Lashi Lake is a Nature Reserve and is a haven for migratory birds. More than 70 species of birds come to nest in this area during the winter. At noon, you will ride to have some delicious local food for your lunch at a friendly Naxi family.

After lunch, you will ride down to Shuhe Old Town , which is the important town of the Tea Horse Trade Caravan from the upper Mekong River to Tibet and India. You will visit the Tea Horse Trade Caravan Museum in Shuhe Old Town.

After Shuhe, you will ride about 4 Km to Black Dragon Pool , which is the main headwater of the Yushui River that goes through the Old Town. It is just like the bright eyes of the town, shining with the wisdom. Pay a visit to the Dongba Ethnic Museum and learn the Naxi Dongba culture. Ride back to Lijiang Old Town and stroll around by your own.

Day 1 Arrive in Kunming

The Green Lake Park(Cuihu Park) in Kunming

Upon arrival at the Kunming International Airport, meet your local guide and transfer to the hotel. You’ll begin your journey to the diverse and captivating Yunnan from the capital city, Kunming.

You will take a leisurely stroll along the Green Lake, a charming area of tea houses and small boutiques selling handicrafts and beautiful local paintings. If time permits, you will have a Kunming city tour.

Day 2 Kunming-Stone Forest-Tengchong

In the morning, we will drive 86 km to the Stone Forest. An old local saying says that ‘If you have visited Kunming without seeing the Stone Forest, you have wasted your time.’ Truly, the Stone Forest is one of the most important attractions of Yunnan.

After lunch drive back Kunming to visit the Guandu Ancient Town which is a famous historical & cultural town in Kunming. It keeps the main architectural style of Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties.

Take the flight to Tengchong in the late afternoon. Arrive in Heshun Ancient Town in Tengchong City, you will be free in Heshun Ancient Town and enjoy the relax life before the wonderful Three Parallel River Grand Canyons adventure tour.

The Stone Forest has unique karst topography. There are six scenic spots in the Stone Forest: Large Stone Forest, Small Stone Forest, the Naigu Stone Forest, the Zhiyun Cave, the Long Lake, the Da Dieshui Waterfall and the Qifeng Cave.

Tengchong city, a vital link on the ancient Southwestern Silk Route (Kunming-Baoshan-Tengchong-Mangshi-Ruili), is situated in the western part of Yunnan Province, Bordering on Burma in the northwest with a boundary line of 151 kilometers long.

Day 3 Tengchong

After breakfast, visit Nujiang River Bridge in Nujiang Basin and Gaoli Gongshan Mountain and drive back to Tengchong at noon.

After lunch, you will visit Heshun Ancient Town including the Museum of Yunnan-Burmese Anti-Japanese War, Heshun Library, the Archway, Dragon Pool, the Wanlouzi Museum of Native Residence, Wenchang Daoist Palace, Clothes-washing Pavilions, Yuanlong Daoist Pavilion, the Philosopher Ai Siqi’s Former Residence, Guanyin Ancient Spruce Trees an so on. “Heshun” means peace and harmony. You could walk leisurely around the historical old town, built in earlier days by overseas Chinese as a location for their retirement.

Day 4 Tengchong-Liuku

In the morning, drive about 4 hours from Tengchong to Liuku, the county seat of Nujiang Lisu and Pumi Autonomous Prefecture. You will visit Gaoli Gongshan Mountain Natural Reserve Area which is located in the Nujiang River Grand Canyon, the south part of Qing-Tibet Altiplano. With a steep slope and sharp mountain incision, the Grand Canyon presents great vertical natural scenery and various climates. In fact, the vertical drop height is above 4,000 meters.

Drive north along the Nujiang-Salween River. As it’s hot and humid in the gorge here, Dai people who live here use big banyan trees to surround the villages. Tropical plants are grown here such as papaya, pineapple, banana and coffee. The famous Yunnan Coffee is grown in this area near the Nujiang-Salween River.

In the afternoon, you will walk around Liuku Town, visit Nujiang River and Nujiang River Bridge. The Nujiang River is China’s important river flowing from north to south. The name of the river is changed into the Salween River after flowing into Burma from China, and it finally empties into the Andaman Sea of Indian Ocean at the Moulmein.

Day 5 Liuku-Gongshan

Drive from Liuku to Gongshan. On the way you can enjoy the beautiful landscapes of the Nujiang Grand Canyon. The 316-kilometer-long Nujiang River Gorge is flanked by two 4,000-meter-high mountains. The gorge is located in Yunnan Province in southwestern China, an area where is rich in ethnic minority culture. It is now a first choice for many domestic and foreign travelers.

Day 6 Gongshan-Bingzhongluo

Drive to BinzhongLuo, then trek 4 hours to visit the First Bend of Nujiang River (Sawleen River), the Nu People, Stone Houses, Hinayana Buddhism, Lama Temple, Chongdintian Catholic Church. Full day excursion to Bingzhongluo, sightseeing includes the first bend of Nujiang River (Salween River), the stone house of the Nu minority, Peach Island, the Tibetan Puhua Temple. You will then have the chance to visit a minority household and experience the life of the local people.

Day 7 Bingzhongluo-Dimaluo-Biluo Snow Mountain

Day 9 Biluo Snow Mountain-Cizhong Village

Trek down the mountain to Cizhong village by the side of Mekong river, finishing your 3 days trekking(total trekking distance is about 50 km). Visit the 100-year-old catholic church built by a french missioner, which is also the best-preserved church in Yunnan. Stay in a local guesthouse.

Day 10 Cizhong-Lancang-Mekong Grand Canyon-Xidang Village

Early in the morning, drive along the Lancang-Mekong River to Mingyong Village in Meili Snow Mountain. Trek about 2 hours to Mingyong Glacier Park, then trek down to Mingyong Village. Walk directly to Xidang Village(2,200m), arrive in Xidang Village and stay in Xidang Hot Spring Hostel.

Day 11 Xidang Village-Nazongla Pass(3680 meters)-Yubeng (3100 meters)

In the morning, walk from our hostel to the Base Camp(3,700m). You will trek up about 3 hours to the Mountain pass(3,500m) in the original forests. And one hour trekking down along the horse-road from the mountain pass, we reach the base camp, where the view becomes very open. The tough, 1000-meter-high ascent from Hot Springs to Nazongla Pass, takes 2.5 hours for a fit hiker without carrying any heavy bag. The path zigzagging under the canopy of trees is quite damp and muddy.

A Tibetan house, located at one-third of the route, sells snacks and drinks. No breathtaking view can be spotted at Nazongla Pass. Another alternative is to ride up on a mule. You can easily reach the pass within 2 hours. It costs RMB 100 from Hot Springs to Nazongla Pass either for riding or carrying heavy bags. The descent from Nazongla Pass to the Upper Yubeng Village takes one hour.

Upon arriving at the village, take the trail turning to the left, walk further down to a stream, cross a bridge and climb a small slope up to the Lower Yubeng Village. When you arrive in Yubeng Village. If weather permits, you’ll wake up to a clear view of the Mt. Kawagebo glacier. You will hike to the Sacred Waterfalls(3,400m), from which Yubeng’s name originated. Buddhists on a pilgrimage to the area circumambulate the waterfall 13 times with the belief that this act will erase all sins from his life.

In the early afternoon, we’ll head back to the village lodge, visit sacred sites along the way, Yubeng Sacred Waterfalls(3650 meters). It takes two hours to reach Shenpu from Lower Yubeng Village. The higher you go, the farther you seem to be from Shenpu, the most sacred destination of circumambulation in Meili. On the background of tantalizing Mt. Miacimu, other lofty peaks as well as imposing glaciers, the valley is flamboyantly adorned by thousands of Tibetan prayer flags.

Day 12 Yubeng Village-Cuoka Sacred Ice Lake-Yubeng Village

Ice Lake of Yubeng Village in Meili Snow Mountain, Diqing

Enjoy the sunrise of the Mt. Kawagebo glacier from the guesthouse, then walk up to Ice Lake of the Meili Snow Mountain.

Walk through the original forest from Yubeng Village, you will see some horses and yaks, as well as some wild animals if you are lucky enough. A beautiful river originates from the Glacier Park, walk along the river with some wooden bridges and spruce trees, you will have a wonderful view of Mt. Kawagebo Glacier. At last, arrive at the Ice Lake which is located at the foot of the glacier. Trek down back to Yubeng village in the late afternoon and enjoy the sunset of Kawagebo Peak.

Cuoka Sacred Ice Lake is 1300 meters higher than Yubeng. The ascent takes 5-6 hours.
First three hours is a tough and long climb in a primitive forest where you may encounter local leeches, especially active after the rain. The ordeal will be rewarded later by a spectacular landscape when you reach the high meadow plateau at 4050 meters.
Another one-hour climb, you will reach Cuoka Pasture. There is a collapsed hut.
Last hour: from Cuoka Pasture to Cuoka Lake (4385 meters).

The return trek takes 3-4 hours. This one-day excursion is only reserved for strong hikers. Before June, the upper plateau is often covered by snow. Bring enough food and ask Aqinbu to find a good guide for you. It may be more reasonable to do this trek for two days and overnight camp at Cuoka Pasture.

Day 13 Yubeng Village-Ninong Grand Canyon-Feilaisi in Deqin

This day, you won’t go back through Nazongla Pass, the same route that you hiked in, you can venture the steep narrow path along a stream and descend to Ninong Village. You will spend the whole morning walking down in Yubeng Valley. Yubeng River flows all the way into Mekong River. Parts of the trail we will pass is actually a canal dug along the half-way mountain by local villagers.

Have lunch in Ninong village(1,900m), cross Mekong River and 2 hours more trek to Jiabi Village. Finally, drive to Feilaisi and enjoy the sunset view of Meili Snow Mountain.

Meili Snow Mountain, also called Kawakarpo, is a UNESCO scenic spot located in Deqin County dividing Yunnan from Tibet. It is a wonderful place to hike and explore both nature and Tibetan culture. Rising between the Salween River and the Mekong River in the extreme edge of Northwest Yunnan, the Meili Snow Mt. is part of Three Parallel Rivers. Legend says that the Meili Snow Mountain is a god guarding Tibetan Buddhism. With 13 peaks over 6000 meters in the range, the main peak Kawakarpo (“Kawagebo” in Chinese) is a sharp snow mountain with an altitude of 6740 meters, which has never been conquered yet.

Day 14 Deqin-Shangri-La

Yubeng Village in Meili Snow Mountain, Diqing

In the morning, you will enjoy a nice sunrise view of Meili Snow Mountain from the Sightseeing Platform, where you can see the 13 white pagodas that means the 13 peaks of Meili Snow Mountain over 6,000 meters above sea level.

Drive 6 to 7 hours to Shangri-La. The view along the way is fantastic with different kinds of trees, streams, prayer flags and stupas, as well as Tibetan villages. Start from Deqin County, after one hour drive, you will visit Baimang Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, you will be able to view Baimang Snow Mountain if the weather is clear.

Visit the First Bend of Jinsha River or Moon Bend, which is the boundary between Sichuan and Yunnan. This is different from the First Bend of Yangtze River in Lijiang City. The bend in Shigu Town changes the flow direction of the Yangtze River but Jinsha River is in Benzilan, the Moon Bend is just a grand bend between the mountains with an impressive scenery.

Drive downhill to the Dongzhulin Monastery , which is located in Shusong Village, Benzilan District, Deqin County, and 105 km from the county seat of Zhongdian County. The Yunnan-Tibet Road passes behind the temple and cars can get straight to the temple. The Dongzhulin Monastery was built in 1667, the 6th year of the Kang Xi Period in Qing Dynasty.

After lunch in Benzilan, we will drive along the the upper Yangtze River to Shangri-La. On the way, you will have a panoramic view of Nixi Pottery Village.

Day 15 Shangri-La

In the morning, you’ll visit the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan. And afterwards you’ll go and visit the tranquil Bita Lake & Shudu Lake in Pudacuo National Park. After finishing the tour in the Bita Lake & Shudu Lake, you’ll visit the Old Town of Shangri La and the Guishan Park.

The Songzanlin Monastery, often called Ganden Sumtseling Monastery or Guihua Monastery, is located at the foot of Foping Mountain nearby Shangri-La County in Yunnan Province. The monastery is built on a hillside and looks like an ancient fort. The Songzanlin Monastery is often called the little Potala Palace because of its traditional Tibetan architectural style.

At night you will visit a Tibetan family and taste the butter oil tea and Tibetan food.

Day 16 Shangri-La-Qiaotou-28 Turns-Halfway Guesthouse

Your hiking trip starts from Qiaotou, pass through 28 turns. 26 km takes about 6-8 hours. From the top of “28 turns” on the high path further uphill to a place of altitude above 3000 meters, you can have a view of the panorama of the entire upper tiger leaping gorge. Check this at a Tea Horse or Guesthouse if you cannot figure it out yourself.

You will arrive at Halfway Guesthouse to finish today’s trekking. At an altitude of 2500 meters, you get a magnificent view over the Yangtze River and the Yulong Snow Mountain right in front of you. For the keen photographer this trek provides a great opportunity to capture nature’s best moments.

Halfway Guesthouse organizes two-day trekking up Haba Snow Mountain with an overnight stay uphill at a point of altitude above 4000 meters. Sleeping bags and mats for the trek can be rented at the guesthouse. Successful trekkers are awarded “donkey shoes” as souvenirs and their names and contact information will be recorded in the “donkey skin book” at the guesthouse. Similar treks can also be arranged at Five Fingers Mountain Guesthouse.

Day 17 Halfway Guesthouse-Middle Rapids-Walnut Grove-Daju

In the early morning, continue hiking to Tina’s Inn (2 hours). After another hour walking down the steep cliff to the bank of Jinsha River, you will reach the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge (Middle Hutiao or Middle Rapids), it is the narrowest part of the gorge, where a tiger can easily jump over the Jinsha River. Trek from Middle Rapids along the Middle Gorge to Walnut Grove Garden, then drive to the lower part of Gorge, get off and walk for about half an hour to the bank of the River. Then hike further along the road to the lower section of the Gorge (about 1.5-2 hours) where we will take ferry across the River. Not far from the Lower Section of gorge, at the other side of river, is Daju Village, you will get off the ferry and trek about one hour to Daju, whose inhabitants are mostly Naxi people.

Day 18 Daju-Jade Dragon Snow Mountain–Lijiang

In the morning, drive about 2 hours from Daju to Yak Meadow. You’ll visit Ganhaizi Meadow, Baishui(White Water) River; take the chairlift to visit the Yak Meadow(3700 meters) in the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain stretches a length of 35 kilometers and a width of 20 kilometers. Looking from Lijiang Old Town in the south which is 15 kilometers away, the snow-covered and fog-enlaced mountain resembles a jade dragon lying in the clouds, hence the name Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The highest peak named Fan Peak (Shanzidou in Chinese) which is about 5596 meters above sea level.

You will enjoy Impression Lijiang Ethnic Show in the mountain directed by Zhang Yimou, which reflect the history about Tea Horse Trade Caravan from the upper Mekong River to Tibet and India. Around 500 local people from 10 ethnic groups were selected from 16 towns and villages in Lijiang of Yunnan Province to perform folk songs, dances and rituals for visitors daily.

In the afternoon, you’ll stroll through Baisha Old Town, which is an enchanting traditional Yunnan Town. Visit the Baisha Mural about 600 years old, which is one part of the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997.

Day 19 Lijiang

In the morning you’ll head for Shuhe Old Town, which is the relic of the Tea-Horse Trading Caravan from bank of Mekong River to India via Tibet.

You will have Lunch at NO.8 Restaurant at the bank of Black Dragon Pool, after lunch you’ll head for the scenic Black Dragon Pool and the Dongba Museum to explore the rich Naxi minority culture.

Then drive back to Lijiang Old Town and visit the Wangu Pagoda on the top of the Lion Hill, here you will have a wonderful panoramic view of Lijiang Old Town. You will walk down from the Lion Hill to Mu Emperor’s Palace which is the local chieftain’s former residence.

After dinner, you will attend the Naxi Orchestral and Show in Dongba Palace in the Lijiang Old Town.

Yunnan Province is the best place to ride bike. Here is very good for cycling all the year round. Shangri-la, located in the beautiful Northern Yunnan province of China, captures China’s beautiful nature at its best. As we travel to Lijiang from Shangri-la by bike over a period of 7 days we’ll charter through high mountain passes, visit the famous Tiger Leaping Gorge, and bike around beautiful alpine lakes.

Day 1 Arrive in Shangrila

Arrival Shangri-la. Here you’ll meet and greet one of our expert guides and transfer over to the local hostel in the famous old town, Shangri-la (Zhongdian).

Old Town is a Tibetan town located at about 3,400 meter and offers a picturesque and fascinating look into Tibetan culture and life, as this area is considered a gateway to Tibet. Here we’ll find the Gandan Sumtseling Monestary, Paducuo National Park, and of course Tiger Leaping Gorge.

After a short rest at the hostel we’ll hop on our bikes for a test ride to make adjustments, begin getting adjusted to the altitude, head to a nearby restaurant for some delicious dinner. You’ll have to try to Barley Wine made from “zanba” (a roasted highland barley flour). Thereafter we’ll head in for a good night.

Day 2 Shangrila

Today we’ll spend our day doing more sightseeing and cycling around Old Town of Shangri-la and getting further adjusted to the high elevation.

This area is rich with Tibetan-style architecture and dates back 1300 years! We’ll eat breakfast and ride to Songzanlin Monestary, 5km north of the old town center. The Songzanlin Monestary (constructed in 1679) is the largest Tibetan Monestary in Yunnan and is nicknamed the “Lesser Potala” due to its resemblance to the magnificent structure in Lhasa. We’ll visit for 2 hours until lunch at a local restaurant.

After lunch we’ll cycle over to a small hill to visit Napa Lake about 6km away. The Napa Lake Nature Reserve is the country’s largest grassland and most scene area of the plateau. We’ll have time to walk around and take everything in, enjoy the Tibetan culture and take lots of photographs before riding back to Old Town.

Upon returning to our hotel in the evening we’ll have a delicious dinner. We’ll be getting a good night’s sleep tonight – we have a big day tomorrow!

Day 3 Shangrila – Baishuitai

After breakfast we’ll say goodbye to the beautiful Shangri-la and will be transferred directly to a high mountain pass (4100m) where we’ll start our cycling for the day. As we begin today’s journey at the top it will be apparent there is little wildlife, few trees or brush but only some moss, and large rocks. As we make our way down its fascinating to watch this change.

After scanning this beautiful Yunnan view we’ll mount our bikes and will be immediately challenged by two 3900-meters-high mountains in a row. It will be worth it though! On the way we’ll stop and choose a nice spot for a picnic lunch.

Our destination is Baishutai, the backdoor to the Tiger Leaping Gorge area. As we descend, we will pass through large coniferous forest that is famous in Yunnan. There area is very undeveloped as the only sounds we’ll here are the animals and the wind as it passes through the enormous pines that line the roads. After a long day’s journey we’ll check into a local hostel, take a shower, grab some delicious food, and relax!

Distance: 101 km, about 60 km riding with 40 km vehicle transfer (this section is really a 2-day ride but there is no suitable accommodation half-way and the first part is a very tough, steep, uphill mountainous climb with little scenery. For this reason, we will use vehicle support to transfer the group to the high mountain pass, where the rest of the day is a much more interesting downhill ride)

Day 4 Baishuitai-Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge

Before we set out for today’s Yunnan biking journey we’ll first visit the unique Baishui Terraces (“bai shui” means “white water” in Chinese). For thousands of years, mineral-laden spring water has flown down the mountain, leaving crystallized sodium carbonate along its slopes, leaving us now with the awesome view of a series of limestone basins full of water that look like huge marble sculptures! Its a lot cooler when you see it than when we try to describe it!

After an hour or so of visiting and taking photos, we will start on our day’s cycling tour. We’ll start with initial 4k uphill section until we head downhill the rest of the way to the Gorge. Lunch will be in Haba, a small but unique village on the way.

In the late afternoon we will enter the world-famous Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the deepest most dramatic gorges in the world, and still quite wild despite enormous efforts to tame it. We’ll bike another 10km after enter in the gorge until we finally arrive at the “middle” of Tiger Leaping Gorge. Here we will spend the night.

Road Condition: Paved. 4km uphill at the very beginning, then most of the road continues downhill. As we approach Tiger Leaping Gorge, there will be a 3km long gravel section, but its still downhill. After entering Tiger Leaping Gorge itself, we will ride another 10 km on a paved road to reach our destination.

Day 5 Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge-Qiaotou-Shigu

In the early morning we’ll spend an hour or so hiking down the narrow spot of the gorge where the entire Yangtze River is forced through a gap only 20 meters wide! We’ll be unable to talk here because of the tremendous, thundering roar!

Once we head out on our bikes we’ll ride along a 10km stretch on a packed gravel road. Once we pass this we’ll reach smooth and rolling roads and get a view of the might Yangtze on our right and the majestic Snow Mountains on our left.

After passing Songyuan Bridge, we will have lunch in local restaurant. Later in the afternoon, we will reach “The First Bend of the Yangtze River” where the mighty Yangtze turns almost 180 degrees. This is the first of several abrupt turns it makes on its way eastward across all of China, before it finally empties into the East China Sea at Shanghai.

The mighty Yangtze, the third-longest river in the world (after the Nile and the Amazon), originates from a glacier in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, “the roof of the world”, where it surges into Yunnan from the northwest, cutting through the high mountains and deep gorges of the Hengduan Mountains, and rushing southwards from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Here, where we stand, the Yangtze is blocked by the Hailuo Cliff, which forces it to turn roughly to northeast, forming a great “U”-shaped bend, which is called the First Bend of the Yangtze.

At this first bend the river is wide, so the water seems to flow in a gentle, slow pace hiding the power beneath the surface. Large willow trees grow luxuriously alongside the river that is banked on both sides with lush, fertile deep green vegetation and immense, steep mountains that rise up from the river toward the sky above. On the fertile soil deposited as the river makes its turn lies the town of Shigu, linking Tibet with the outside world. Here is where we will stay for the night, in a local hostel. Shigu (Stone Drum) town is named after a white marble monument, carved in the 1500’s in the shape of a drum, to commemorate victory by the Naxi ruler over an invading Tibetan army.

Road Condition: Paved. 10km in the beginning as we ride along Tiger Leaping Gorge, then a steep 8km uphill stretch. Afterwards, the road will alternate between flat terrain and gentle slopes.

Day 6 Shigu-Xionggu-Lashihai Lake-Lijiang

Today, we will depart from Shigu and ride to Lijiang, our final port of call for this challenging route. In this final leg of the race, we will pass by Lashi Lake. This lake is situated 8 km west of Lijiang City with an area of about 9 square kilometers. In the Naxi language, Lashi means “New Basin”. This beautiful lake is not only a scenic spot but also a provincial nature reserve because of the rich biodiversity of life forms found here. Rich in cultural and biological diversity, the Lashi Lake watershed is home to two minority ethnic groups, the Naxi and the Yi, and provides another critical habitat for the endangered black-necked crane, the only alpine crane in the world. The watershed is also the primary water supply to a large downstream population and the rapidly growing tourism industry in the historic city of Lijiang.

This last leg will be a pretty easy and relaxing part of the tour. Upon arrival, we will celebrate our accomplishment.

Day 7 Lijiang

Lijiang, situated at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, is incredibly rich in cultural resources, home to the Baisha Frescoes (a national historical relic) and “Naxi Music” being living examples of Tang and Song Dynasty art, and also Dongba hieroglyphs, the only existing pictographs in the world.

This morning, cycle to Yuhu village where Joseph Rock stayed dozen years in early 1900’s at the foot of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. After getting back Lijiang old town, we walk to visit the Black Dragon Pool, Dongba culture museum.

In the evening, enjoy your free time in the lovely town.

Baoshan Stone Town is not a town made of stone as it is named, but a big village built on a huge stone. The mighty nature mother brought along a heavy stone, and the diligent Naxi People turned it into a wonderland under heaven. This tour combines trekking the famous Tiger Leaping Gorge with walking through remote farm villages to experience village life in China today. You will need to be reasonably fit to walk between 4 and 8 hours each day with some steep climbs. You will also need a sense of adventure as some of the facilities in rural China are basic. You will be rewarded with spectacular views, authentic local food, great guides and a real appreciation of life in rural China.

Day 2 Lijiang-Tiger Leaping Gorge

First a ride from the old town of Lijiang to Qiaotou, our trek starting point. Reach the tollgate of Tiger Leaping Gorge at Tiger Leaping Town after a couple of hours’ ride. Pass a school and the views of the Tiger Leaping Gorge shows itself gradually as we walk in the path right on the side of Haba Snow Mountain. Across the Jinsha River(Upper part of Yangtze River) is named the Yulong Snow Mountain(both soar over 5000 meters high) or locally Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in between the Jinsha water rushes down in the very narrow gap the narrowest of 25 meters–considering the No.1 river that flows across south China thousand miles towards East China Sea. Ascent the 28 zig-zags after lunch we get good views of the gorge: a total of over 3500 meters fall from the mountain top to the water surface within this gorged valley. Continue walk to Tea-Horse Naxi Guesthouse to have an overnight stay. Excellent mountain views from the guesthouse. (Approx 6 hours)

Day 3 Tiger Leaping Gorge-Daju

In the early morning, continue hiking to Tina’s Inn (4 hours).

Option tour: Trekking down and up to Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge Stone,another hour walking down the steep cliff to the bank of Jinsha River to the Middle Gorge (Middle Hutiao or Middle Rapids), worship the dangerours shoal of “Starriness”, it is the most narrow part of the gorge, where a tiger can easily jump over the Jinsha River. Lunch at the Middle Rapids or where it is more suitable or convenient.

There are 3 roads from the Middle Rapids back up to the Gorge to Walnut Grove. One ends at the left of Woody No.2 (using the main road for tourist coaches, Y15 for “road crossing” fee). Another ends near Teacher Zhang’s Guesthouse (through Tianti which takes 2 hours, Y5 “road crossing” fee), take the third which go through ends near Chateau Woody where you see a sign advertising Xia Yin Gu’s guide service. Take the third one which goes through Yixiantian but takes 3 hours as the scenery is the most spectacular in the entire Tiger Leaping Gorge. Notice that on this third road close to the rapids there is a very dangerous section of a few dozen meters long called “Tiny Sky” (and you need to pay between Y2-5 depending on the condition to cross that). Note at the rapids itself, there are two places charging “road crossing” fees of 15Y each: one for a small bridge leading to the first road, the other for crossing the wooden plank to the Middle Tiger Leaping Rock.

From Half way Guesthouse to Middle Hutiao or Rapids will take between 3 to 4 hours. Then climb up the gorge to Walnut Grove (Woody’s Guesthouse) using either the Tianti or Yixiantian route. Depending on how tired, choose the one to suit on the day. So from Middle Hutiao to Walnut Grove will take 2 or 3 hours and hence the total for the day from Halfway Guesthouse to Walnut Grove will be about 5 to 6 hours. Then take a van to Daju Ferry, cross to Daju town. Our driver will meet you there and take you to hotel.

Day 4 Daju-Baoshan

After breakfast, drive along the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to Mingyin Town and pay a visit the panoramic view of the 13 peaks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from a far. Continue the driving to Baoshan Stone Town, a small town with one hundred families on the top of a gigantic rock.

After lunch, explore the old stone town on foot. Overnight in Mu.s Guest house or the similar(two-bed, no private washroom).

Day 5 Baoshan-Liuqing

Experience the Naxi village in the morning and after breakfast we walk out this village along the Yangtze River valley. We gradually ascend for 4 hours or more, elevation gains over 700 meters until we reach the top at 2500 meters by passing two tunnels at Taizi Pass. Before the tunnels we walk on a narrow trail cutting on the edge of the cliff. The tunnels, one 60 meters and the other 90 meters long, at the pass are the only passage that connects the villages from each side of the pass built in 1960s. They are very basic tunnels that were rather made for Asians, so be care for not bump your head against the roof in the tunnels. Panoramic views of the Stone village at back and in front, we have grand views of the Jinsha River. The gorge here is reputedly “the second gorge” after Tiger Leaping Gorge in terms of views and sudden plungings. After the pass we descend in the forest. Stay overnight in the Naxi family in Liuqing. (Approx 6 hours)

Day 6 Liuqing-Labo

Wake up early in the morning to catch the great sunrise view in the valley. Great views of terrace landscape and Jinsha river along our gradual trail. Pass by the Naxi villages and sometimes with a group of children running around. The village on the other side of the river looks isolated. It is a different ethnic group over there. This area has an obvious small population as we can only find resident in the villages, for most of the time we walk in the forest or open field or just arid slops. After a long trail walk we reach by the ferry site named Genang. Get across the Jinsha River on a very basic boat and reach our today’s overnight spot, a Mosuo village named Labo. (Approx 7 hours)

Day 7 Labo-Zhuangzi

This is a hard day. Up ahead is the uphill trail leading into the scattered bushes or rocks, behind us is the Jinsha river and the randomly folding landscape we have traveled. We pass the Yi, Han, Pumi and Lisu group mixed village of Gewa halfway. Outside of the village are fields and dried ditches on the slopes. Be aware of the scotching sunlight in a sunny day. Ocassional steps on a very basic road that during the rainy season usually gets flushed away by the rain in some parts. More houses and fields there and here and more open view of the Jinsha River behind as we ascend. Zhuangzi, a small village of Lisu people, is the place where we stay tonight. Feel the unique construction and weaving craft in Zhuangzi.(Approx 7 hours)

Day 8 Zhuangzi-Yongning-Lugu Lake

Last day trek starts by ascending from Zhuangzi in the morning mist or clear sunlight. Pass the primary forest at the mountain pass at an altitude of 3500 meters. This part is an extremely less-touched part of the trek. Stream will be frozen if travel in winter, prayer flags(also called wind horse flags) of Tibetan Buddhism are hung at the pass like at every pass elsewhere in Tibetan Plateau. Across the pass we get open views of the Ninglang area, the Lugu Lake is about to be in sight. It is a green world(only golden in winter) here. We keep descending on the yellow earth, passing a group of villages, forest sometimes until we reach a road, which is also the terminus of our Tiger Leaping Gorge and Lugu Lake combined trek. Ride to the lake check in the hotel in Lige. (Approx 7 hours)

Day 9 Lugu Lake-Lijiang

This is a hard trekking trail and the most romantic part is the trekking from Baoshan stone town to Lugu lake. We have to take twice ferry across the lake with our donkeys, and pilgram to Lugu lake. Trekking around Lugu lake, worshipping the local Zhamei Temple, and the Matriarchal saint mountain: Gemu, which is named by the Local god, the legend story said she cried for her lover, so the tears following all the way became Lugu lake, and now it became dating center for lovers. Day 1 Arrive Lijiang

Sightseeing and Activities:Lijiang Old Town, Black Dragon Pool and Dongba Museum

You’ll begin our journey to Lijiang, which is the travel highlight of Yunnan. Our local guide will meet you in Lijiang airport. And then you will be transferred to our hotel. In the afternoon, you will walk from the water wheels of Lijiang Old Town to visit Black Dragon Pool and learn the Naxi ethnic culture in Dongba Culture Museum.

The rest time will be free in Lijiang Old Town.

Day 2 Lijiang

Sightseeing and Activities:Shuhe Old Town, Mu Emperor’s Palace, Lion Hill, Baisha Old Town, Baisha Murals

You’ll head for Shuhe Old Town, which is the relic of the Tea-Horse Trading Caravan from bank of Mekong River to India via Tibet. You are planning to walk from LongQuan (Drangon Spring) in Shuhe Old Town to Baisha Old Town, you will visit the the Naxi family and Baisha Mural. Lunch at “Just Here Restaurant” in Baisha Street.

After lunch drive back to Lijiang and visit the Wangu Pagoda on the top of the Lion Hill, here you will have a wonderful panoramic view of Lijiang Old Town. You will walk down from the Lion Hill to Mu Emperor’s Palace which is the local chieftain’s former residence.

Day 3 Lijiang – Lugu Lake

In the morning, drive 4-5 hrs on the spectacle mountain road to visit the mysterious Lugu Lake. On the way, enjoy the beautiful view among the huge mountains and rivers. Do some easy walking to visit the beautiful canyon and Yi ethnic people’s villages when you arrive at Ninglang County.

Arrive in Lugu Lake in the afternoon, visit Mosuo Ethnic Museum and Luoshui Village around Lugu Lake.

Day 4 Lugu Lake

Sightseeing and Activities:Liwubi Island of Luguhu Lake, Mosuo Ethnic Home-made, Bonfire Party

In the morning, you will take the canoes to visit Liwubi Island in Lugu Lake. In the evening, take part in Mosuo Bonfire Party with ethnic dance and singing performance. You will dance and sing with Mosuo boys and girls around a big bonfire in the outdoors theatre.

Visit a Mosuo ethnic family in the afternoon and enjoy the Mosuo ethnic life in the village. Afternoon, you will walk along the Luguhu Lake by yourself. Enjoy the sunset wonder of Luguhu Lake in Luoshui Village.

Day 5 Luguhu Lake-Zhuangzi (2700M)

Drive along the Luguhu Lake and arrive in Yongning Town, visit Mosuo ethnic market and Zhamei Monastery.

Start the trekking to Zhuangzi Town . Overnight at local hostel, Clean room with public bathroom and hot water for shower.

Day 6 Zhuangzi-Labo (2650M)

This stage is a long and weary climb, reserved for keen hikers who are still in good physical shape after the first stage. The orange line in photo 2 marks the trek of this stage.

Ferry: The elevation first drops to 1400m when you reach the ferry.

Labo is the first village on the east shore. You climb through fields, streams, villages. It is difficult to find high trees giving a shade against the burning sun. Sometimes you walk on a tractor road.

Day 7 Labo-Fenglian-Liuqing

Sightseeing and Activities:Jinsha River,Liuqing

Trek from Labo to Fenglian, then continue trekking to Liuqing.

Fenglian: A further descent to Fenglian is a long but gentle hike, with enjoyable views of Jinsha River. Several villages can be found along the path. Local people are friendly. Children would say hello to you. Many travelers would finish their trek at Fenglian as landscapes of the first stage are the most breathtaking. They can take a morning bus going back to Lijiang.

Day 8 Liuqing-Baoshan Stone Town

Sightseeing and Activities:Jinsha River, Taizi Mountain Pass, Baoshan Stone Town, Naxi ethnic people

In 2.5 hours, you will encounter a tough ascent to the Prince Pass, steeply-incised by Jinsha Jiang. Even horses are not able to climb up here. You will have to cross two tunnels without any illumination. Torches are essential here. The first tunnel is actual the highest point of Prince Pass.

Day 9 Baoshan Stone Town-Mingyin-Daju(1800M)

Visit Baoshan Stone Village in the morning, start the 4 hours hiking tour from Baoshan to Mingyin. You will trek along the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and enjoy the 13 peaks of the mountain from a far. Finish the hiking at noon and drive to Daju Town where is the end of the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Enjoy the wonderful view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from a far.

Day 10 Daju-Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge-Nuoyu Village

After breakfast in Daju Town, walk down to Jinsha River; take the boat to the other side of Yangtze River from the Daju New Ferry. Hike along the road from Xincun Village of the Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge to the Middle Part and visit the Walnut Grove Garden Village on the way.

Arrive at the Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge at noon and enjoy the lunch in Tina’s Hostel. Continue the hiking tour up to the Haba Snow Mountain, visit the Bamboo Forest, the Flying Cliff, Guanyin Temple; Arrive at Bendiwan Village and take a break at Halfway Hostel. You also will enjoy a fantastic view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tiger Leaping Gorge from Halfway Guesthouse.

Continue the hiking to Nuoyu Village and stay in Tea Horse Guesthouse.

Day 11 Nuoyu Village-Qiaotou Town-Shangri-La

After breakfast, hike from Tea Horse Guesthouse to Qiaotou Town. The whole distance covered on the first day is about 15 kilometers, and you’ll hike for about six hours in total. First, hike for 1 hour to the steep switchback called 28 Zigzag Turns before the next break. The views are unforgettable. After a break, hike another one or two hours, and then we will arrive at Naxi Family for lunch.

Hike another two hours from Naxi Family, we will arrive at Qiaotou Town. Of course,we will have a great view of Yulong Snow Mountain and overlooks the Jinsha (Golden Sands) River Valley during the hiking. Finish the hiking adventure tour when you arrive in Qiaotou Town. Meet our driver and transfer 2 hours to Shangrila and stop to visit the Xiaozhongdian Grassland. In Shangri-la, walk around Dukezong Tibetan Ancient Town which was an important town of the Tea-horse Trade Road from Yunnan to Tibet and India for the tea trading.

Day 12 Shangri-La

In the morning, visit the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan. Songzanlin Monastery has another alias – ‘the little Potala Palace ‘, so named because the whole monastery is in the traditional style with mysterious atmosphere. Walk around Songzanlin Monastery,

And afterwards you’ll visit the tranquil Shudu Lake in Pudacuo National Park. Pudacuo National Park is located in one of the most biologically-diverse regions of the world. While the region comprises only 0.7 percent of China’s land area, it contains more than 20 percent of the country’s plant species, about one-third of its mammal and bird species and almost 100 endangered species. Finally, you will visit a Tibetan family to experience the local life in the bonfire party with Tibetan dance and music and you will try Tibetan home-made yak and cheese.

This 2-day tour is a primary difficult trekking tour. You can reach the highest point of this trekking: 28 Zigzag Bends to see how steep and thrilling the Tiger leaping Gorge is. You could also witness an incredibly loud, churning, foaming river relentlessly pounding giant boulders in its path and visit the must-visit hiking place. Day 1 Lijiang- Qiaotou – Halfway Guesthouse

Sightseeing and Activities:Nuoyu Village, 28 Turns Trail, the upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, Haba Snow Mountain

At 6:00 am, drive to Qiaotou Town, which takes 2 hours on the trip. Tiger Leaping Gorge hike tour is one of the most beautiful trekking tour of Yunnan Province. Your hiking trip starts from Qiaotou. About two hours trekking in the upper Tiger Leaping Gorge, you will arrive at Naxi Family and have lunch there. It is easy trekking from Qiaotou to Naxi Family, but beautiful scenery.

After lunch, a trekking from Naxi Family to 28 zigzagging turns will be a challenge for you .From the top of “28 turns” on the high path further uphill to a place of altitude above 3000m, you can have a view of the panorama of the entire Gorge. The go pass Tea Horse Guest House (5 hours) and arrive at Halfway Guesthouse (2500m) to finish today’s trekking. The total trekking route is 26 km, and it takes about 6-8 hours.

Day 2 Halfway Guesthouse – Daju – Lijiang

Sightseeing and Activities:Waterfalls and Streams, Tina’s Guesthouse(middle section of Tiger Leaping Gorge), Walnut Grove,Daju Town,Yak Meadow, Baishuihe River,Blue Moon Valley, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

In the early morning, continue hiking to Tina’s Guesthouse(here is the middle section of Tiger Leaping Gorge). Then you will go on walk to Walnut Grove Garden. Then take a van from Walnut Grove Garden to Xincun Village. Cross the Daju Old Ferry to Daju Town. Our driver will meet you there and take you to visit the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and take cable car to the Yak Meadow. Visit Baishuihe River and the Blue Moon Valley. Afterwards, drive back to Lijiang from the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Transfer to hotel. Service ends.

Travel Tips:

Take some lightweight clothes with you and wear comfortable walking shoes for tired trekking and overnight staying at Tiger Leaping Gorge. If possible, knee pads are necessary to avoid any bump.
If trekking in winter or rainy season, the windbreaker, gloves, anti-skid shoes and waterproof coat will be needed in case of temperature drop and get wet in the rain.
If you are easy to be hungry and tired during the trekking, bring some high caloric snacks with you, such as chocolate and beef jerky. If not, you can buy food at local guesthouses along the route. Our tour guide will provide you two bottles of water for each person every day. But we suggest you to bring more by yourself.

For the strong ultraviolet ray there, we suggest you to wear sun bonnet or take sunsceen with you.
Do not trek too fast, because the Tiger Leaping Gorge is located at high altitude area, or altitude sickness may happen to you.

Arrive at Lijiang, pick up from airport and transfer to hotel for checking in.

Day 2 Baisha – Wenhai

Sightseeing and Activities: hiking, Naxi village

From Lijiang, we will take a car for 20 minutes to one of the small Naxi villages at the base of the mountains. Then we will hike to Wenhai Lake.

During this hike we climb through a pass of ‘Yulung Shan’, which offers spectacular views of the Upper Lijiang Plain, including the local villages, crops, unique floral diversity, and the surrounding mountains. We will trek between 2500 m and 3100m above sea level. After we reach the summit of the pass we will descend to Wenhai Lake where we will stay for the night at the Ecolodge.

We can either have a full lunch when we arrive at Wenhai, or a simple lunch on the trail. After arriving in Wenhai we will have free time to explore the village and take in the magnificent views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Around 19 o’ clock we will have a local dinner prepared by a Naxi family. All of the food is grown locally and although the meal is simple, the ingredients are fresh and the dishes are tasteful. For example, rice with three or four different kinds of vegetables is a common meal.

Day 3 Wenhai – Xuehua – Shanghai Village

Enjoy the beautiful sunrise view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the early morning, hike around one hour along the slopes to Xuehua, a much poorer Yi village and a chance to relax for the afternoon and check out a little local life. Interestingly Xuehua is also the home of one of the few ‘bimo’ of the area, an Yi shaman-like figure steeped in a ritualistic history infinitely longer and more complex than its newcomer counterpart amongst the Naxi – the‘Dongba priest’. Whether or not you’ll get the chance to meet him is moot, but it does give some indication as to the depth of tradition in this village.

Trek to Changsongping Village and Xinshang Village, visit some small rivers. Arrive in Shanghai Village in the late afternoon and stay in local family. Shanghai is a relatively affluent Naxi village and the last stop before heading east away from Jade Dragon. By now those muscles should be flowing!

Day 4 Shanghai Village – Qiaotou – Halfway Guesthouse

After breakfast, trek 1.5 hours down to Longpang Village with a panoramic view of the Jinsha River, the upper reach of Yangtze River in Lijiang.

Drive from Longpan Village to Qiaotou Town, then start the Tiger Leaping Gorge trekking tour from Qiaotou, after 2 hours trekking, arrive at Naxi Family Gesthouse for lunch.

After lunch, a trekking from Naxi Family to 28 zigzagging turns will be a challenge for you.
