Brief Introduction

The main reason people visit Haba village in the mountains of northern Yunnan is to trek up the Haba Snow Mountain. The area has become a major mountaineering center, attractive to those seeking a relatively easy 5,000-meter peak. It is located at the foot of the western Haba snow mountain and is mainly inhabited by Naxi people. Haba village is under jurisdiction of Sanba Township of Shangrila. 

As it is near the border of Lijiang river, there are more Naxi villages than other’s. It has jurisdiction over more than 10 natural villages and the central village is Guluba Village.

History and Culture

Long time ago, the Naxi people in Lijiang came here to clear the land. Unintentionally they found that the corn had taken root and grown in this land. They confirmed that this land was fertile. So they emigrated here and settled down to become the oldest local residents. So there are the first indigenous people in Guluba Village, with 80 Naxi households. Less than a mile to the east of Haba village, there are two villages called Yinshan village and Yangshan village, which are Han villages. Migrating from Yanyuan county of Sichuan province, there are more than 50 families.

It is said that this place is regarded as of Yin and Yang by geomancer in the early times. Near the village are Longwangbian village(龙王边村) and Lanjia village(兰家村), both Muslim villages. They moved from the Annan Village(安南村) in the mountains north of Sanba township about 80 years ago. Not far to the northwest of Longwangbian village(龙王边村) lies the Yi village, where more than 70 families moved from Sichuan to Luoji in Shangri-la more than 150 years ago. More than 10 kilometers to the north of Haba village, there are Lisu Village including Lamazida Village(拉马自达), Haizaoba Village(海藻巴村) and Gudi Village(谷地村).

The Sky Ladder of The Middle Section of Tiger Leaping Gorge

The ladder is sometimes known as the ‘sky ladder’ or ‘ladder to heaven’ with 170 steps and leans against the mountain and is actually a series of ladders bolted not to the cliff face, but actually attached to some random pieces of possibly rotting wood which may or may not be attached to the cliff face. The longest one is perhaps 20 metres. And they are near vertical. 
The ladders are made of solid metal, but the rungs are so thin that your feet could easily slide off if it is wet. besides, if you were so scared shitless that you’d broken out in a cold sweat and your hands were slick with it, well, that could be an issue too. Although it’s an alternative way to go back up to the highway in Middle Section of Tiger Leaping Gorge in addition to the “safe path” along the Jinsha River, don’t risk, especially in a rainy day. there is no any protective equipment. If you fall down, that is it. Otherwise, for some adventure hikers who want to try the sky ladder, make sure the shoes is proper and don’t look down. Once you start, you must trek up the scaring sky ladder until you reach the top. It seems like endless way when you are climbing. Actually, it only takes around 10 minutes. 

Hiking Tips

1. It usually hot in day time, you can bring shorts and T-shirt. As hiking will consume lots of physical strength, you could take some high calorie food such as chocolate, malted milk, sliced dried beef and so on.
2. When you hiking to the Shenzhou Waterfall located between Walnut Garden and Zhongxia Hotel, you must be very carefull, as it may fall stone with the waterfall which is very dangerous.
3. Each year from June to September is the rainy season of the Diqing Plateau. You’d better avoid this period as it may occurs debris flow and mountain rock fall.
4. Located at the high altitude area, surrounded by Hengduan Montains, the climmate in Tiger Leaping Gorge is complicate and changable. The temperature difference between day and night is big. Take think coat, down jacket, gloves, anti-skidding boots with you.

Dozens of ancient wells scatter in the ancient town of Jianshui, Honghe Prefecture. Some of them are single-mouthed, double-mouthed, triple-mouthed, quadruple-mouthed, and even twelve-mouthed. So ancient wells can be a wonder deserving to be explored in Jianshui!

First dug in the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Hongjing Well is situated in Hongjing Street. It is a double-mouthed well and is also one of the famous Eight Sights of Jianshui in ancient times.

Longjing Well in the northeast of Jianshui Ancient Town has enjoyed a history of about 600 years. Its water tastes much like that of Longjing Well of Longjing Temple in Hangzhou of Zhejiang Province; and it was made by war refugees from Zhejiang, so it is named reasonably as “Longjing Well”!

Otherwise called Liquan Spring, Dongjing Well is the eldest well of Jianshui, having a history of more than 700 years (first dug in the Yuan Dynasty). Its sweet and crystal-clear water is said to be the best to make tea with in Jianshui-made purple-sand pots.

Dubbed as the “first well in south Yunnan”, Daban Well is the most famous of its kind in Jianshui. Apart from making tea with, its water is considered by locals the most ideal to produce beancurd (Tofu) and rice noodle.

Changsheng Village

Changsheng Village is located in the Northeast of Tiger Leaping Gorge Town, Shangri-La, consisted of Nuoyu Village, Bendiwan Village and Yachaguo Village, etc. Changsheng Village is the start point of Tiger Leaping Gorge hiking. Going through the ticket office of Tiger Leaping Gorge in Shangri-La, then it is Changsheng Primary School where there are thousands of hikers gathering and the main inhabitants are Naxi people. It’s the first village of Tiger Leaping Gorge hiking and all villages of Tiger Leaping Gorge are  affiliated with Changsheng Village maintaining the traditional folk culture.

How to get to the Changsheng Village

Bus 
For no direct bus to the Changsheng Village, travellers can take a bus departing from Lijiang to Qiaotou Town(桥头镇) or Shangri-La and get off at Qihong bridge(霁虹桥), then rent a car heading to the tourist area in Tiger Leaping Gorge for 10 miles. The fee is usually around 60RMB.

Car Rental 
The fee of 100-mile drive from Lijiang City to the Changsheng Village is about 300-500RMB. You’d better renting a 7-seat van above 3 people and its fee is same as cab’s. Travellers can visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge by yourselves after getting there in two hours and the driver is  waiting for you at the park lot.

Bycicle
For many bike enthusiasts, riding a bike from Lijiang to the park pot in the Tiger Leaping Gorge would be a good option. You can stay at locals’ home for the night and catch the view of the upper section in Lijiang on the second day, then back to the Tiger Leaping Gorge Town and move towards the upper section in Shangri-La or the Middle Section of Tiger Leaping Gorge.

Best time to travel Tiger Leaping Gorge

Between April and June in the late spring and early summer and the autumn time during September to October is the best time to travel. During these two periods it is suitable to go hiking on the Tiger Leaping Gorge, also can see the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenery. The late spring and early summer the temperature is moderate, flowers on the meadow blooming like a piece of brocade which is charming.

After about 20 days of Mid-Autumn Festival, the plateau is autumn secnery which is the most wonderful time of Diqing plateau.

From June to September is the rainy season of Diqing plateau, although the scenery is beautiful, but not suitable to travel.

After October the temperature is very low, if one wants to visit need to bring enough warm clothes.
Tiger Leaping Gorge even in August is also likely to fall a few snowflakes, and day and night temperature difference is very big, there is a saying that “there are four seasons in a day”, so every season need to pay attention to keep out the cold.

1. The average altitude of the upper section of Tiger Leaping Gorge is nearly 1800m. Take a frequent rest in case of altitude stress.
2. It’s rainy season from July to September, Please pay attention to some clasticrock rolling down from the mountain and don’t get too close to the river with water surging.
3. It’s dry season from December to February, strong wind or flocks of sheep may bring about the clasticrock. Get perpared before hiking.

Yixiantian in the Middle Section of Tiger Leaping Gorge

The most special attractions in the Middle Section of Tiger Leaping Gorge are Mantianxing (Stars all over the sky) and Yixiantian(One Line Sky). The river falls nearly 100 meters (328 ft) in this section with reefs standing in random, and the riptide jumps in the reefs like stars falling into the river. Therefore, it is named as Mantianxing (Stars all over the sky) by the locals. The best time to see this attraction is during the time of sunset.
It takes about 1 hour to Mantianxing from Tina’s and 1.5 hours back. 3 to 4 hours is needed including the visiting time.
Going through the hinterland of the gorge, the Snow Mountains at the two sides of the section are the highest peak. Viewing the gorge from here, you will see the sight of one line sky cut by the high mountains and deep valleys, like standing at the horizon. The sight here is called”One Line Sky”。 In spite of the”One Line Sky”,the flying waterfalls and the deep valley would make your trip more enjoyable.
There is no way from Mantianxing (Stars all over the sky)and”One Line Sky”, so you should go back to Tina’s and then move to”One Line Sky”. It is not necessary to go to the”One Line Sky”because you can view its sight from Mantianxing.

Xuehua Yi Ethnic Village

Xuehua Village consists of Enjiding Village(恩吉定村) and Runanguo Village(汝囡国村).
Xuehua Village is about an hour’s walk from Wenhai (from Wenhai to the north). The village is scattered on the alpine meadows halfway up the mountain of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The people living here are the Yi people who depend on the mountains and eat in the mountains. The Yi people here have almost no other food except potatoes. The altitude is too high and the climate is too bad. Except for potatoes, there are few other crops that can survive here.

About China Stone Forest Karst Geology Museum

China Shilin Karst Geological Museum is located in the “World Natural Heritage”, “World Geopark” and the National AAAAA Scenic Spot – Shilin Scenic Area, which is a key investment attraction project of Shilin County. Shilin Shideri Geoscience Co., Ltd started construction in September 2010, planning to use the area of 46666 ㎡ with a construction area of 36320.45 ㎡.The exhibition hall has an area of about 10000 ㎡ with ten thousand pieces of exhibits.

🏛 Historical Background

Fudong Temple, now known as Fudong Courtyard (福东院), is situated at No. 62 Taishi Alley in Jianshui County, Yunnan Province, adjacent to Xiaogui Lake. Originally constructed during the early Ming Dynasty, the existing structures were rebuilt in the late Qing Dynasty. The temple gained prominence as the residence of the renowned Ming Dynasty scholar Yang Shen, who lived here twice. In 1898, Lin’an Prefect He Zongzhang commissioned a stone carving of Yang Shen’s portrait at the temple, accompanied by his own poetic inscription.

🏠 Architectural Features

Fudong Courtyard exemplifies traditional Chinese residential architecture with its two-entry siheyuan (courtyard) layout, covering approximately 1,170 square meters. The complex faces south and features a central square courtyard surrounded by rooms on all sides. The main halls are oriented northward, flanked by side rooms and studies. A distinctive feature is the riverside hall, which offers a panoramic view of the adjacent waterway, connected by a covered corridor that allows for all-weather access. ​

🎭 Cultural Revitalization

Since 2021, Fudong Courtyard has undergone preservation and revitalization efforts, transforming it into a vibrant cultural venue. The local government has collaborated with third-party operators to introduce various cultural activities, including courtyard theater performances, calligraphy and painting exhibitions, and experiences in traditional Jianshui purple pottery making. One notable performance, “Seeking the Way in Lin’an – Nostalgia Chapter,” tells the heartfelt story of a potter grandfather and a tofu-making grandmother, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Jianshui.

Why is Moli Waterfall So Special

Moli Waterfall, also known as Zhaduo Waterfall, is located in the Moli Canyon in the junction of Mangshi, Luanchuan and Ruili. It is hidden in the deep tropical rain forest between Guangnong Mountain and Guangma Mountain. The clear spring water pours down from the steep cliff of 60 meters high, forming a scene of “stacked water like cotton, without the use of bows and flowers to scatter.” It looks like a huge white silk fluttering in the air, and dancing clouds between the peak cliffs. The sound is like thunder, and there are hot springs under the waterfall. The landscape is very unique. Moli Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Dehong and even southwest of Yunnan.

How to Get to Moli Waterfall

It is inconvenient to take a bus to get to Moli Waterfall. Because it is approximately 5-6 kilometers away after getting off the bus. Therefore, it is a best choice to charter a car to Moli with the price of 50 RMB for single way.
