At the river’s bend, there stands Stone Drum (Shigu) Town, named after a drum-shaped marble plaque. Built during the Jiaqing era (1548-1561) of the Ming Dynasty, the stone drum is a monument commemorating the victory of Lijiang’s Naxi ruler over an invading Tibetan army. It is one point five meters (five feet) in diameter and zero point five meters (two feet) in thickness. The stone drum has an obvious vestige of what appears to be a “rip” in it. It is said that the stone drum would rupture prior to any war and then fold when peace returned.
Throughout time, Stone Drum Town was always a significant and vitally strategic military area where many famous historical events have been taken place. It was here that Zhuge Liang, the famous and highly acclaimed military strategist of the Three Kingdoms Period, chose to cross the Yangtze River and gain “battle advantage” over his opponents. The first emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan, used this place for his expeditionary forces to ferry across the river. In April 1936, the Second Route of the Red Army, led by General He Long and Ren bishi, crossed the river here and continued to march north. There are memorials here honoring the people whose histories are entwined with the Stone Drum Town.
The Baisha Ancient Village is one of the oldest towns in Lijiang City. It got its name “Baisha” meaning “white sand” from the natural white sand in the area. It was the cradle-land of the Tusi Dynasty evolved from the Mu Clan. It was also the earliest settlement of the Naxi people. There are many ancient constructions built in the Ming Dynasty: the Dabaoji Palace, the Liuli Temple and the Wenchang Palace. The well-known Baisha Frescoes are situated in the Dabaoji Palace.

The spring is divided into three branches to flow into the Old City relatively from east, middle and west. The countless small branches are threading among the stone-paved lanes, just as the poem describes “spring crossing around each household forms a poem while flying willow before every household draws a painting”. Many architects give highly praise for it and it has gained such a beautiful name as “Suzhou in Highland” and “Eastern Venice”. A great number of travelers are attracted by the beauty and charm of the Old City and the Snow Mountain, keeping pouring and lingering on their primitive simplicity and quietness. In 1939, the CAMCO Factory was built here. Its predecessor was the Hangzhou Aircraft Manufacturing Factory. It was forced to move in with a part of equipment and technicians during the Anti-Japanese War. Because Loiwing was at the border and close to the transportation artery, overseas equipment and materials could be transported here easily through the Yunnan-Burma Road. It is unknown where the where the runway was at that time. It was said that the plane entered into Myanmar after leaving the ground.
The CAMCO factory was built according to the American design. It was the largest aircraft manufacturer in China at that time. It had assembled more than 100 P-40 and Hawker warcraft, some of which were equipped with Claire Chennault’s Flying Tigers.
There were nearly 3,000 people when the scale of the Loiwing was the largest. The plane of the Chairman Chiang Kai-shek was also maintained here. In January 1942, the Japanese army occupied Myanmar. The situation was tight. Soon the Yunnan-Burma Road was cut off. The aircraft factory was also bombed by the Japanese. It was said that Chiang Kai-shek’s plane was also damaged. In May, the Japanese army occupied China’s Longling and Tengchong.
The CAMOCO was blown up before the Japanese army captured it. It was estimated that even the factory buildings were not left behind.
The Japanese army captured all parts of Myanmar and occupied part of the territory on the west bank of the Nujiang River. It completely cut off China’s major arteries and the only land transportation channel to overseas. The situation of the Anti-Japanese War was extremely sinister. For this purpose, China and the United States had to maintain the only air transport at the high cost. Therefore, the most dangerous air route- “Hump Route”, has staged countless thrilling tragic stories.
In 1933, American William Pawley started the Central Aircraft Manufacturing Company, CAMCO, in Hangzhou, China. The company assembled Curtiss-Wright aircraft for the Nationalist Chinese Air Force. As the Imperial Japanese Army moved down coastal China in the winter of 1937-38, the CAMCO plant relocated to Hankou, 600 km inland, where it repaired war-damaged airplanes and possibly assembled new ones. When Hankou fell in October 1938, CAMCO moved 400km SSW to Hengyang. At the same time, it built a new factory a further 1500km west on the China-Burma frontier at Loiwing, which opened in early 1939. In the winter of 1940-1941, CAMCO also became involved in recruitment and supply for the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG), later known as the Flying Tigers.
The CAMCO factory at Loiwing was virtually destroyed by a Japanese air strike in October 1940, and “was rebuilt as a maintenance and repair facility for the [Chinese Air Force]”; subsequently it was used to repair AVG P-40s, and its airfield was briefly used by the AVG to mount raids into Thailand and Burma. Following the Allied retreat from Burma in the spring of 1942, the Loiwing plant was lost to the Japanese.
It is located in Loiwing Village, Ruili, Dehong Jingpo and Dai Autonomous Prefecture.
After arriving in Ruili City, the best ways to the Site of Loiwing Central Aircraft Manufacturing Company are taxi and self-driving.
It is suitable to visit the Site of Loiwing Central Aircraft Manufacturing Company all year round.

Chinese Name: 丽江古城科贡坊
English Name: Kegong Archway in Lijiang Old Town
Into the Lijiang Ancient City, near the Square Street, and the bar street, there is an inconspicuous three-story building, this is the Kegong Archway, which reflects the Naxi people advocating culture, good at learning. The ancient city was built in the Qing Dynasty and was built for the Yang family. It was built in three years. In the first year of the Qing Dynasty(1723), Lijiang implemented the “reform of the soil”, which was changed by central Government. Lijiang has entered the feudal society for a certain period of clique administration. The reform of the social system has greatly stimulated the enthusiasm of the folk children to study. From the “returning to the soil” to the abolition of the imperial examination in the late Qing Dynasty for 180 years. In the time, Lijiang has more than 60 Jurens and seven Jinshis. During the Jiaqing period, Yang Zhaolan and Yang Zhaorong, both of whom lived in Gongongfang, performed in the exam. Then, in the Daoguang period, Yang Zhaorong’s son, Yang Shuochen, was raised again, so the government and the people donated money to build a high-rise Kogong Archway in the alley. In the third day of the first month of 1944, it was destroyed by fire.
the Location:
Ninong Grand Valley is located in the lower reaches of the Yubeng valley. The stream of Ninong valley is formed by the snow water from several snow mountains in Yubeng village, which stretches for more than 10 kilometers, and finally flows into the Lancang river. The spectacular valley is the only way getting out of Yubeng village from Ninong, with a one-metre wide road cut between the waist of the steep mountains.
The Ninong Grand Valley is another hiking route getting out of Yubeng Village, which leads to Lancang River. After entering into the mountain, the road becomes narrow and steeper, with many boulder on the way. Then walk up to Ninong water canal in which flows the living water of Ninong village. This part of road is very narrow and dangerous.
On the left is vertical hillstone and channel, right is cliff of hundreds of meters, below is surging river, no fence, no flat road, only rugged and rocks of different sizes. The canal takes up about two-thirds of the water, and sometimes the road is full of water, with only a few stones to be trample down. Later it forms a mountain waterfall.
Move forward and you can see the Yubeng River flowing into Lancang River. With another 2-hour walking, arrive at Ninong village.
Note: The perfect route of Yubeng Village Hiking is getting in from Yubeng Village and getting out from Ninong village. The scenery to Ninong is very beautiful and it’s a pity if you miss it. However, the hiking path along the way is also dangerous for there are hikers died every year.
Chinese Name: 德宏大盈江
English Name: Dayingjiang River in Yingjiang County, Dehong
Beautiful Dayingjiang River runs through Yingjiang County in west Yunnan border area. The river mouth is open and its surface is as flat as a mirror. In the sunny days, the limpid river lies as smooth as silk. Along the both sides of the river, distant mountain loom and forest is dyed black. Umbrella-like banyan groves looks lush and green. In the converging place of clouds and water, a bamboo raft is moving away… In the distance, since the river is set off by bamboo forest, a unique scene appears that the river overflows the bamboo groves and bamboo groves place the river in between. The hundred-meter-wide river is tightly locked by two pieces of rock cliff at Tiger-jumping Gorge. The distance between the two cliffs is only seven meters. The pouring torrent clashes the high mountains which rise abruptly along the gorge. The increasingly large fall of river generates glittering foam and the thundering uproar in the gorge can be heard several kilometers away. Considering the pouring torrent, deep riverway and giant stone emerging in the middle of the river, small waterfalls can be seen everywhere. The mountains stand facing each other on both sides of the river, posing a natural wonder of “a seam of sky if people look up and a thread of river when having a bird view.”
Lijiang Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is one of the most scenic spots, but I bet that most tourists know little about Jiuzihai Pasture in the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. It is named after the village in the snow mountain, Jiuzihai. The majority people living here are mostly Han people, while the minority one is Lisu and other nationalities.
On the east side of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, about 30 kilometers from Lijiang city, there are more than 666 acres of plateau meadow, and there are more than 30 mysterious sinkholes scattered on the huge meadow. The spring emitting from a small cave is divided into three curving and winding down, and bypassing the village suddenly until disappearing at the foot of the mountain.
More than 666 acres of plateau meadow is just like a vase, showing a picture of nature in the woods on the east side of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. More than 30 sinkholes are inlaid in the meadows like the shining stars. Because of the mysterious and natural worship of the villagers, local people use “Jiuzihai” as the village name. Jiuzihai is evolved from a beautiful sea. There is a mysterious mountain spring in the land and mysteriously disappears after the meadow.
What attracts tourists most is fresh and beautiful flower sea. These flowers have many varieties. The flowers are white this month, and turns yellow next month. What’s more, some of them change several colors of the season. Several generations in the village felt strange about the various phenomena in this dam, but no one has ever explained these mysterious natural phenomena. Every flower seems to be carefully carved. Here a highlight of the sea is primroses colored with dreamy purple, pink and tender yellow evenly decorating on the green grassland. Their beauty is natural, pure, and all elements are god’s masterpiece, while nature is the best designer.
There are more than 30 circular pools distributed without rules in the meadow of Jiuzihai. Looked from distance, it is a strange “crop circles”. but it looks more artificial closely. The most amazing part is that most of the round water pools running by a unique tree. There is a large amount of water in the pool except winter, and the water depth is more than one meter. Standing on the slope of Jiuhaizi village, the whole meadow looks like a lot of silver mirrors, flashing in the sea of flowers and meadows.
Among the trees in the entrance of the village, there is pool where the locals call it “the Divine Spring”. It goes east, returns to the right side of the village to the right of the village, and finally disappears all of a sudden. People now can still not figure out where it flows from, or where to disappear.
