The remarkable Baoshan Ancient Stone City is located in the Jinsha River Valley, 110 kilometers north of Lijiang. The whole village is built on a mushroom-shaped rock. Surrounded by cliffs and the rushing Jinsha River, the village has only two stone gates for access from the north and south, making it a city of natural stronghold.
In a bird view, the village cuddles in undulating mountains, with the dwellings fitting well into the terrain. Showing a strong Naxi style, the ancient structures are mainly wooden, roofed with plain black tiles.
Entering the Naxi community, visitors can instantly notice the paths are based on original rocks, with boulders seen occasionally near the narrow lanes. The utensils for the villagers’ daily life are also made of natural rock, involving stone beds, stone pillows, stone tables and stone benches. The whole village seems to be a giant stone carving.
Certain paths in the village are so narrow that they can only allow two persons to pass together. As a result, horses are the most popular means of transport in Stone City. Whenever a horse carries goods to the corner, the horseman will give a sounding reminder for the pedestrians to make room. The ever-coming and going horses left shoe prints of different sizes on the stones, recording history of the ancient village.
More than 100 Naxi households live in the Stone City. Here, we cannot but admire the industrious Naxi people, who, out of such tough terrain, have built an idyllic settlement. With their wisdom, they conserved water and built terraced fields where rice, wheat, corn and others are grown on rocks. When rice is at its maturity in October, golden waves of rice are seen in the fields of gentle breeze, forming a rare sight of harvest.

One day in Xinhua, a seemingly mundane village sitting in northwest Yunnan’s Heqing county, begins with some rhythmic cling clang sound shrouded in morning mist.
However, only a few know that this is where the secret of it lays.
Xinhua, as a matter of fact, is an unusual place in which nearly every single household has been involved in the making of silverware for centuries.
In here, silver artifacts – even those with the simplest forms – might take a villager’s half month of work.
You perhaps can never believe that a quality and well-designed silver pot would entail up to one hundred thousand times of hammering before completion.
But this is exactly why these handicrafts, marked by durability and elegance, have gained much popularity among customers from the U.S., Japan, India, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand, Pakistan and many more.
The production of silverware in Xinhua can be traced back to as early as the period of Nanzhao (738-920AD), one locally-built kingdom in Yunnan which synchronized with the Tang Dynasty, a peak for the entire history of ancient China.
But nothing seems to have been forgotten or discarded today – some 1,100 years later – as the enthusiasm of producing silver artworks was, and still is infused in the soul of silversmiths from Xinhua.
Silverware being created here range widely from rice bowls and kettles to tea cups, from bracelets and earrings to small statues and even fairly sophisticated crowns. And it seems that every one of them retains a good story, waiting to be heard.

The meandering Heihui River runs through Shaxi from north to south in the east. There is a crescent-shaped ancient bridge, Yujin Bridge, across the river, which is set off by distant towering green mountains.Yujin bridge was built in the Qing Dynasty Kangxi, a few hundred years war collapsed and damaged, in 1931, Yunnan Province Dali Shaxi Jianchuan County public fundraising to build ancient bridge, Bai famous scholar Zhao Fan as Yujin bridge repair specifically wrote “bridges offering cited”.
We can take the shuttle bus from Xiaguan(Dali) to Jianchuan County, and take a local minibus to Shaxi Town, then we can walk to Yujin Bridge directly.
Yujin Bridge was built in the Kangxi Period of the Qing Dynasty. After several centuries of collapse and destruction due to war, it was rebuilt in 1931. It has a height of 6 meters (12 meters clearance height), 35.4 meters length, 5 meters width, and fences made of stone slabs.
On one side, there is a stone-carved turtle head on the bridge vault looking at the upstream area of the Heihui River; on the other side, there is a turtle’s tail connecting the downstream part of this river. At the ends of the fences, there are four carved giant salamanders.
This ancient bridge is the only way for Bai people living in Shaxi to go to work in the fields and to do business. Stone slabs on its body have become shiny with green light but are also potholed due to the press and tread of carriages, horses and people.
It is a witness and carrier of Shaxi’s long history, greeting and sending off several generations of Shaxi ancestors. If you stand on the bridge looking back at Shaxi Ancient Town, you can see that there is a landscape painting under those mountains.
Shaxi Ancient Town is a pleasant surprise between Dali and Lijiang. Shaxi Ancient Town is a famous attraction once played an important role as a bustling trade point on the Tea Horse Caravan Road. With the decline of the ancient Tea Horse Road, the town seems to have been forgotten. But this helps retain the original appearance of the small town. Many of the historical sites have been well preserved including Sifang Street, Xingjiao Temple, Yuxi Bridge and Ancient Opera Stage. Compared with other commercialized ancient towns in China, the undeveloped Shaxi Ancient Town is a better place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis and experience the quaint lives of local Bai People
You can visit Yujin Bridge between February to May since Shaxi enjoys the favorable climate and tranquil environment. The 8th day of the 2nd month on the lunar calendar can be the ideal time to enjoy the Taizi Festival, which is the grandest featival of Shaxi.

Meili Snow Mountain is one of the most sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism. In the 1930s, they were praised by American scholars as the most beautiful mountains in the world. Meili Snow Mountain boasts numerous snow-clad ridges and peaks, thirteen of which are more than 6,000 meters above the sea level. In the scroll of Tibetan classics, the 13 peaks of more than 6000 meters are regarded as “immortals practicing in the palace of the prince”, especially the main peak Kawagebo, honored as “the top of the eight sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism”.
13 Praks of Meili Snow Mountain From north to south:
Also called Shennv peak, it is a summit in the Meili Snow Mountain of Yunnan province, China. At 6,054 metres, it is the fourth highest peak in the range (after Kawagebo, Cogar Laka and Nairi Denka), and is located at the southern end of the range. It is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful mountains.
Mianzimu, means “Sea Goddess” in Tibetan, who is said to be the wife of Kawagebo. There is also a local saying that it is believed to be the daughter of Yulong Snow Mountain. Perhaps because the goddess prefers flowers, nature dresses more flowers at the foot of the peak, patches of alpine rhododendrons in bloom making the peak more enchanting.
It means “the first of the five Buddhas” in Tibetan language, which is called “headless devil peak” in Tibet. It is so named due to the five flat, sharp snow-capped peaks standing side by side just like the crown of Buddha. It is located on the north side of Mianzimu Peak. Standing 5470.5 meters above sea level and covering about 10 square kilometers with snow all year round.
Bujiong means “little son” in Tibetan language, who is said to be the son of Kawagebo and Mianzimu. At 6,000 meters above sea level, it stands between Jiawaren-an Peak and Kawagebo Peak, magnificent. The two big ice falls separately on its south and north slopes are very spectacular.
Also known as the “hero daughter peak” or the “general peak”, it is round and full, with an altitude of 6000.1 meters.
Also called Pabanaidingdeduo peak(帕巴乃丁德朵峰), it is 5880m.
It is 5157 meters above sea level.
The highest peak Kawagebo, which rises to 6,740 metres, has never been summited. It is the highest mountain in the Chinese province of Yunnan. Kawagarbo is one of the most sacred peaks in the Tibetan world and is often referred to as Nyainqênkawagarbo to show its sacredness.
Shuolazanguimianbu means “the fiercest red face god in the cypress mountain” in Tibetan language, also called “Buqiongsongjiwuxue(布穷松吉吾学)”. Legend has it that he was a guard at the far north. In Tibetan, “shuo” refers to cypress, “la” refers to mountain, “zangui” refers to cruel god and “Mianbu” refers to red. This is very consistent with the natural geographical features of the mountain: the bedrock of the mountain is purple sandstone, so it is dark fuchsia. The mountain has a complex and changeable climate. In summer, there is snow flying and the wind speeding. The mountain’s alpine shrubs and fir forests grow in abundance.
On the south side of the mountain, it is a traffic artery connecting Deqin of Yunnan with Zuogong and Chayu in Tibet, which is one of the important passageways of “tea-horse trade” with cultural implication and connotation. Window on China Theme Park also named The Kingdom of the Little People (Chinese: 小人国主题乐园) is a theme park located near Kunming, Yunnan that features comic performances by people with dwarfism. Supporters of the park claim that it provides employment to people who would otherwise be unable to find work, but it has been criticized for treating dwarfism as a humorous condition.
As of 2010, there were over 100 employees whose ages ranged from 19 to 48. The park requires employees to be less than 51 inches (130 cm) tall. The employees live in nearby dormitories which were specifically constructed to be accessible to short people. During the performances, the actors pretend to live in small mushroom shaped houses.
The park was founded in September 2009 by Chen Mingjing, a wealthy real estate investor, as part of a complex he owns near Dian Lake in the western suburbs of Kunming that also includes the World Butterfly Ecological Park (世界蝴蝶生态园). Although many visitors to the park are students from nearby towns, Chen hopes to make the park a destination for tourists visiting China. He provides English lessons for his employees to help them interact with foreign tourists. He aims to eventually employ 1,000 people with dwarfism.
The performers sing, dance, and perform onstage for visiting tourists. They often act out Qigong, scenes from fairy tales, or ballets such as Swan Lake. They also occasionally perform hip-hop dances. The performances often feature a “Dwarf King”. The king, who is only 1 metre (3.3 ft) tall, often wears a gold silk cape and rides a three-wheeled motorcycle during performances.
The park has been criticized by several organizations, including the Little People of America and Handicap International. Critics contend that the park resembles a human zoo and isolates the handicapped from the rest of society. Chen claims that the business provides employment for many who would otherwise be unemployed, allowing them to build self-respect. Many employees have said that they enjoy living with other short people and feel less lonely at the park. They say that before they were employed by Chen they were unable to find work or were exploited by employers. The American television channel, Vice, started partly by director Spike Jonze, filmed a piece for their show, Vice Essentials, at the Kingdom of the Little People in 2015. In their short documentary they interviewed some of the staff and were taken on a tour of the park, including the dorms and behind the scenes places that visitors aren’t normally privy to.
The Lollipop Guild and the rest of Munchkin Land. Snow White’s seven caretakers. Willy Wonka’s Oompa-Loompas. All have two things in common: little people (colloquially, “dwarves”) and utter fiction. But dwarfism exists, and people with dwarfism need jobs. Combine that with a serious problem of discrimination against little people, and you could have a problem on your hands. For China, the controversial solution is the “Kingdom of the Little People.”
Located near the city of Kunming, the capital of the Chinese province of Yunnan, the Kingdom of the Little People is intended to be a tourist attraction — a theme park, of sorts, where everyone (except the visitors) is short. In order to work at the Kingdom, one must be no taller than 4’3″ tall, eliminating some of the ‘taller” people with dwarfism. As of early 2010, the park employed 100 such people and its owner aims to employ 1,000 total, according to Reuters. Those people hired by the Kingdom are offered housing in a dormitory-like environment customized for people of their short stature, and most are given a role as a performer inside the Kingdom.
Tourists pay a hefty sum for the honor of visiting — tickets cost about $10 (in yuan equivalent), an enormous amount given that per capita GDP in China is only about $5,000. The show they receive? The performers pretend to live in mushroom-like huts and act as if they’re members of a fiefdom lost in a Vaudevillian nightmare. Performers of short stature don tutus and put on a tongue-in-cheek version of Swan Lake. “Shaolin monks” put on a faux combat performance. A contingent of guardsmen march around the grounds, acting (as part of the motif) while doubling as crowd control. And ruling this whole kingdom — at least, in the context of the show — is a 3’3″ emperor, draped in a gold tunic and protected by bodyguards, as seen above.
