There is no doubt that people of different places tend to design and build houses in accordance with their unique natural and geographical settings.
Yunnan, marked by its widespread mountainous areas, subtropical and tropical climates as well as multi-ethnicity, remains some of the most distinctive folk residences across China.
The Yinzi House
Dubbed the Seal, Yinzi house is a common architectural form among the Han and Yi communities of Kunming.
With a small squared courtyard seating in the center, the entire residence looks like an imperial Chinese jade seal from the outside.
In fact, the Seal is a traditional house type of northern China. Residents of Kunming cleverly take the form and make it adapt to the local geographical nature.
The Bamboo House of Xishuangbanna
Thanks to the lush bamboo forests surrounded, bamboo-made houses can be found everywhere in southern Yunnan’s Xishuangbanna, the home of the Dai and Jingpo minorities.
Known as Yunnan’s tropical paradise, Xishuangbanna keeps with a sweltering and humid climate all year around. Such two-storey bamboo houses thus are particularly helpful to avoid the nuisance of dampness and separate people from their livestock in the meantime.
Apart from the commodious and airy space inside, bamboo houses are also featured by their steep slope roofs which can be identified from hundreds of meters away.
The Muleng House of Lisu and Mosuo
Muleng houses refer to homes of the Mosuo and Lisu groups who dwell among the Nujiang or Lijiang regions in northwest Yunnan.
Normally erected alongside rivers and lakes, these cabins are built up purely by pristine round logs without any nails in between to connect one section with another.
The wooden materials have contributed to keeping Muleng house a cozily warm place in winter days and a cooling one during the summer. In addition, because of some wedge shaped parts being employed, the houses could play a vital role in mitigating the effects of earthquake.
The Tuzhang House of Yi
Characterized by their terraced layout and interconnectivity, Tuzhang houses are a symbol of the Yi minority of Yunnan.
A typical Tuzhang house is founded by stones. Once the mud brick wall is completed, planks or bamboos slats are soon laid down on crossbeams to build a deck. And then another layer of mud has to be paved in order to solidify this newly-made surface. Such roof is often used as a field to dehydrate food ingredients.
Local-style dwelling houses
No matter what forms they take, folk residences should be deemed an outcome of the long term mutual adaptation between mankind and the nature. To some extent, it is these highly diverse architectural works that have shaped and reshaped the multi-ethnic culture of Yunnan.

The Wenhai lake is a seasonal alpine lake and wetland. Throughout the Spring and Summer. The Wenhai lake basin is one big grazing ground with various little streams winding through the grassland. Water collects on the south end of the basin, then disappears from the ground (through the Karst rock formation underneath) flowing toward Lashihai to the south. During every July and August when the rain season arrives, water begins to rise in Wenhai, and the lake is usually filled up by October. Then during the winter season, Wenhai water level lowers again until March of the next year. Then ,the entire lake is emptied of water ,when the basin turns into a grassland again. Every year between November and January of the next year, birds from as far as Siberia and Qinghai come to Wenhai to rest, creating a great opportunity for bird watching in the area.
Wenhai is located on the southern slope of Yulong (Jade Dragon) snow mountain and it is a part of the Lashihai provincial level Alpine Wetlands Nature Reserve. The elevation at Wenhai is 3,100 meters. The Wenhai area is an ideal location for visitors to explore and learn about northwestern Yunnan’s dramatic geological formations and rich biodiversity. The unique climate and soil in the area nourished a variety of vegetative covers and plant species. Including old-growth forests, shrubs and meadows. There are also unique wild flowers that bloom all four seasons. Including over twenty species of rhododendrons. Wenhai is also home to a variety of economically viable mushrooms and precious medicinal herbs.
1.Tea and Horse Caravan Trail
In the earlier times, the well- known Tea and Horse Caravan Trail that traversed between Yunnan and Tibet came through the Wenhai area. This ancient commercial corridor originated in the Ming Dynasty and was part of the “Southern silk Roud”.
2.Naxi people
The Naxis have lived in Wenhai for over 300 years. There are five clans in the Wenhai upper village, whose ancestors were of Tibetan and Han origins. Overtime, however, these people were regarded as Naxi by the other villagers. There are two clans in Wenhai lower village, whose bloodlines are from the Tibetans and the Bais, but are also being regarded as Naxi people now. north of the Wenhai villages is the Xuehua village where there lives a group of Yis ,who still maintain their very simple and traditional lifestyle of the Yi people.
There are many route choices to reach Wenhai from the Lijiang old town ,the distance is between 20 to 25 kilometers long. On each of the route, you can ride in a car for some distance, and the rest of the distance you can hike or horse-back ride up to Wenhai are mostly uphills. The elevation rises fron 2,400 meters in Lijiang to 3,100 meters in Wenhai are meters im Wenhai. Beginning the hike from Yuhu or Longquan (a.k.a. Shuhe),most visitors take about 4 hours to get to Wenhai.
There is a variety of extraordinary scenery aling the hiking trail to Wenhai, and with the exception of a few places, the vegetative covers of the area are mostly intake. On a good day, you can view from the various scenic look-out points the widely-spread Lijiang basin below or the towering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain above. The various rhododendron shrubs and plants around Wenhai provide great opportunities for visitors to relax, enjoy and learn in the area.
The trails from Yuhu and Longquan (Shuhe) to Wenhai have been improved to ensure basic safety along the trail, completed with simple signage. Therefore, these trails are suitable for independent hikers who have experience in wilderness treks. Other trails marked on this map have interpretive signs at the trailheads, however the trails have not been improved and lack signage along the way. For visitors who are interested in trekking these unmarked trails, we recommend that you hire local guides to ensure reaching Wenhai safely and timely.
The purpose for the Wenhai trail improvements and promotion project is to encourage visitors to fully experience and understand the spectacular ecological and cultural diversity in the Lashihai watershed (where Wenhai is a division). At the sane time, it is hoped that ecotourism can be promoted in the Wenhai area to allow the local community and environment to directly benefit from your visit. As you are trekking in this very special area, let us remind you to please safeguard the resources surrounding you and to please follow the “Visitor Code of Conduct” below.
Wenhai Lake is a habitat for migrating birds, most notably the endangered black stork. Each year, for reasons not yet completely known, Wenhai undergoes a transformation from sub-alpine lake to grazing grasslands. Beginning in early spring, the lake gradually disappears, believed to drain through underground limestone formations to Lashi Lake, about 500 meters below. Then, with the return of the summer rainy season, Wenhai Lake begins to fill again. By fall it reaches its full size, ready for the arrival of migratory birds in late December. The watershed’s highland forests support a wide variation of plant and animal species, including protected raptors, forest wildlife, traditional medicinal plants and treasured fungi. In spring, the region’s famous rhododendrons – over 15 species — burst into bloom, creating mountains of colorful flowers.
Take a bus/taxi or charter a van from Lijiang to arrive at Baisha Old Town and start a 1~3 days hiking to Wenhai village.
Trekking to Wenhai
Starting from Yuhu of Baisha, the town where Joseph Rock lived for 17 years in the 1930’s and 40’s, a steep uphill climb followed by a traverse through a shallow bowl and a sharp descent to the Wenhai Ecolodge takes about 4 hours, which gives hikers time to enjoy the scenery. The forests surrounding Wenhai Village are home to many species of plants and animals, including musk deer and Lady Amherst’s pheasants.
For the more adventurous, Wenhai can be the starting point of a three-day trek through the Tiger Leaping Gorge, which tracks an upper stretch of the Yangtze River through one of the world’s deepest ravines. (Environmentalists are fighting plans to dam the gorge for a hydropower project that would flood much of the area, but not Wenhai, which is at a higher elevation.) Other activities include horseback riding, visiting local schools and, from November to March, bird-watching.Rhododendrons blossom in April and May; in July and August, it rains most afternoons.
With Wenhai lake in the foreground and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain towering in the background, the tranquil Naxi village of Wenhai makes for a pretty sight, especially in the rainy season (May to August) when its lush banks are covered with splendid blooms of wildflowers and primroses. Enjoy a relaxing walk in the meadows of Wenhai and watch alpine animals such as yaks, miniature horses, black pigs, goats and sheep grazing.

Nujiang Puhua temple also called Lama temple, belongs to Tibetan Buddhism Temple, located in Dongfeng Village of Bingzhongluo, Gongshan county, Nujiang Prefecture, Yunnan province. There are 11 wall paintings under the porch and inner walls, more other 2000 small pictures of “Songji”. A clay sculpture of Buddha stands in the middle of two tigers and one lion. The whole temple is built in Tibetan style, simple but not primitive.
Founded more than 500 years ago, it is the only Buddhist temple of the Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Built in 1766 by monks and it served the daily needs of the monks settled around the temple, gradually forming a village called Lama Zhong, meaning the village of monks. Impressed by the miraculous thing the monks were able to achieve, many Nu people living in nearby villages gradually become followers of Tibetan Buddhism. As a matter of fact, more than half of the forty-two registered monks of the temple are of Nu descent. It’s considered an honor for the Tibetan and Nu Buddhist families to send a son to the temple.
It is now the residence of the fifth living Buddha – Langqiu(朗秋). In the past, Puhua temple was in disrepair, and its buildings were inclined and leaking rain. Over the past few years, the living Buddha has worked hard for the restoration of the temple and received some great support. Today’s Puhua temple has returned to its former style.
Yunnan province is a multi-ethnic place. The residents near Puhua temple are mainly ethnic minorities such as Tibetan, Nu, Lisu, Dulong and Naxi. Although they are different nationalities, they all believe in Tibetan Buddhism and have firm confidence. Langqiu living Buddha has worked for the harmony and development of all the ethnic groups, with his compassion and wisdom to educate the local residents and believers. When the white tower comes to light, the Buddhist lights of Puhua temple appear in the sky. May the Buddhist lights of Puhua temple always shine in the minds of the multi-ethnic and multi-cultural people living in the parallel flow of the three rivers. May Tibetan Buddhism continue to develop under the light of wisdom of the living Buddha of Langqiu.
After arrive at Bingzhongluo, tourists can hike to the Puhua Temple or take a chartered car to.
The First Gulf of Nujiang River(怒江第一湾)
When Nujiang River flows through Ridan Village of Bingzhongluo, it is obstructed by Wangqing Grand Cliff so that Nujiang River is forced to flow in east-west trend instead of north-south trend. After running 300 meters, Nujiang River is cut off by Danla Mountain so it turn round from west to east. Hence the half-round gulf of Nujiang River.
Shimen Pass(石门关)
In the north of Bingzhongluo, two cliff straight up along the river bank and form a large stone pass in the height of 500 meters and in the width of 200 meters hence the name ‘Shimen Pass’. Shimen Pass is a stunning landscape lying on a beautiful slope along the river bank. The local people call it ‘Nayiqiang’. It is the essential way to get into Yunnan-Tibet.
Chongding Catholic Church(重丁教堂)
Zhongding Catholic Church is the most famous church in Bingzhongluo, built in 1904 and founded by a Frech missionary. There is a simple tomb behind the church where the founder missionary is buried.
► Shimen Pass seems more dangerous if be seen from Puhua Temple. This location is better than the bank of Nu River.
► Puhua temple is usually locked, you can go to the side small room to ask the Lama to open the door.
► There is no ticket for Puhua temple, but just give some money to maintain the temple.
► Outside Puhua temple is the famous First Bend of the Nu river.
► The main activities of Puhua temple are the “Gedou Festival”, which falls on the 25th to 29th days of the lunar 12th month, and the “Youjing Festival”, which falls on the 15th day of the lunar 6th month.
Chengjiang biota, located near Maotianshan Mountain帽天山, Chengjiang, Yunnan Province, is a intact early Cambrian paleontological lithosphere.
She vividly reproduced the magnificent landscape of marine life and the primitive characteristics of living animals 530 million years ago, providing valuable evidence for the study of the origin, evolution, ecology and other theories of life that lasted 5370 million years in the early period of the Earth. The study and discovery of Chengjiang biota not only provide scientific facts for the sudden and nonlinear evolution of Cambrian life, but also challenge Darwin’s theory of gradual evolution. As of 2012, Chengjiang biota covered 16 species and more than 200 species fossils. On July 1, 2012, Chengjiang fossil site was officially listed in the World Heritage list.
The fossils of Chengjiang biota are widely distributed, located in Chengjiang County, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province, near Maotianshan Mountain, 6 kilometers form the east of Chengjiang County. It is 56 kilometers from Kunming City and 87 kilometers from Yuxi City. The Maotianshan fossil belt is zigzag distribution, which is 20 km long, 4.5 km wide and is buried more than 50 meters deep.
Chengjiang fossil site, which is rare in similar fossil sites in the world, shows the early Cambrian marine communities and ecosystems. The early Cambrian Chengjiang fauna in eastern Yunnan is a rare fossil treasure house in the whole world, characterized by the special preservation of floppy fossils of multi-phyla. There are more than 120 species of fossils found in Chengjiang fauna, belonging to more than 10 phyla like sponges, coelenterates, linear animals, branchial animals, Lobopodia, brachiopods, mollusks, arthropods, chordates, etc, and some strange groups with unknown taxonomic position. There are also a variety of symbiotic algae. The diversity of early Cambrian organisms is fully demonstrated.

1. Cherish the cultural relics, do not touch the articles at random.
2. Know the opening hours of scenic spots in advance and plan the tour according to the time.
3. Before entering the site, please look at the signs and learn about all matters needing attention.
4. Do not use a flash when taking photos. There are many precious cultural relics which are “afraid of the light”. Under the irradiation of strong light, they will accelerate their “aging” and even form permanent damage.
5. During the visit, you should pay attention to the instructions next to the articles. In this way, you can not only know the basic information of it, but also make a judgment on their value. You should pay attention to the “No Touch” sign that will be visible in the description of some articles.
There are many hiking opportunities near Shangri-La, but this is one of the more spectacular yet easy ones. Rather unknown and not well connected with roads, hiking to Abujicuo (Abuji Lake, 阿布吉措) is a nice daytrip away from the crowds and tourist attractions of Shangri-La in Northern Yunnan, China.
Abujicuo has recently become a bit more well-known and now attracts locals as well as outdoor-loving tourists. But even though it has stunning views and is quite close to Shangri-La, not many people are visiting due to the rather underdeveloped infrastructure. Thus, the hike to Abujicuo is perfect for you if you’d like to be independent and do your own thing (just as we do).
The hike is easy and offers great views of the valley, mountains and lake. You’ll also see local farmers, herds of yaks, horses and pigs.
Naming
“Cuo” (措) is the Mandarin Chinese spelling for the Tibetan word “tso”, meaning lake. Many lakes in the Tibetan areas of Yunnan, Sichuan, Qinghai, and of course Tibet itself are named with “cuo” in the end.
Legend has it that Abujicuo was undiscovered for a long time. One day, a farmer lost a cow called “Abu” and set out to search for it. During the search, he kept shouting “Abu”, and finally found the animal near this lake. Henceforth, it was called “Abuji Lake” or Abujicuo.
If you happen to be traveling in Shangri-La, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, these days, it is advisable to go hiking in the Abuji scenic area that features a pristine lake and vegetations in early autumn.
Surrounded by lush mountains in Xiaozhongdian Town, the holy Abuji looks like a fairyland with dreamy clouds. It takes around one-hour drive and 2-hour hiking to finish the one-way journey from the Shangri-La county seat to the lake area.
The lake lies at an elevation of 4358 meters above sea level, and it’s great pleasure to admire the rare alpine flowers and clear waters near the traces. The bumpy path to the area can be hard to identify at times, so a local tour guide can facilitate a lot in exploring the holy area.

Chinese Name:宁洱县磨黑镇孔雀屏茶马古道
English Name: Kongqueping Village and The Ancient Tea Horse Road in Ninger County, Puer
Link: http://www.puercn.com/cmgd/yj/22952.html
Kongqueping Village or Peacock Lawn, located between Mohei and Babian, is an important relay station on the official horse road. As it is far away from today’s No. 213 National Highway, the remained sites of tea-horse road are preserved relatively intact.
In the past, the Kongqueping Village was once a flourishing place. One neat and flat stone road divided the villages into two halves, and street stores stood closely to each other on both sides of the road. At that time, 64 rest stops for horses were on business along this just several hundred meter long street, each one can accommodate 120 horses. Now, the house pattern of all these families almost remains the original appearance, and it is easy to roughly recognize the “upper stop” and the “lower stop” in any of these houses.
A proverb is now still spread in the Kongqueping Village: “Every house has a sliding block in front of its front door.” The meaning of the proverb is that no one could look down upon others because everyone in the Kongqueping Village has some money. The “sliding block”, which is an important symbol of horse rest stop, is a metaphor for “money”. Any family with a rest shop for horses will put a flagstone (about 1.5 m long and 0.8 m wide) in front of the front door in order to prevent the road in front of the door to be cracked by mules and horses in and out. Nowadays, these “sliding blocks” can still be seen everywhere in the Kongqueping Village. When I was little in my childhood, I’ve already heard my grandpa talking about his legends in the Peacock Lawn. My grandpa once made a magnificent feat, which was worshiped by me, in this ancient road.
At that time, the horse road was also where bandits appeared often, and the most bandit activities were in the area of Babian River to the north of the Kongqueping Village.
The 100-year-old houses and mysterious treasures
Not long ago I finally had an opportunity to visit the fabled Kongqueping Village. And the very Kongqueping Village appeared in front of my eyes was a simple and quiet small village. In the early morning when the morning mist had not yet gotten cleared, the sun was shining its light on the higher top of mountains, and the sweat smell of horses from long long ago was as if still spread over the long flagstone street. Houses on both sides of the street remained almost their original appearance, except all the door planks of the shops were closed as if they would never open again, leaving the flagstone in front of the door waiting alone beside the obsolete threshold. The street at that time was particularly quiet, and the quietness was only to be broken by occasional sound of chicken calls, making the visitors a sudden feeling about smoke and fire in life behind the quietness.
Walking up along the village road, it is expected to see a guide stone standing beside the road. It is said the guide stone was at the skip road between the former official horse road and the latter tea-horse road. But when I got there, no guide stone was seen.
There was a small building beside the road with all kinds of things upstairs, ranging from knives for cutting horseshoe to copper bells hanging around the neck of the head mule, and to the silver necklet used as a protective gear against sneak attacks from tigers and leopards. The old man in the house raised these two things up, clear and melodious bell tings sounded in the old building, that’s when I suddenly realized that the bells were not only to chase off loneliness along the ancient road, not only to pass messages for the horse-gang, and also to comfort the horses, which was much more important.
The 100-year-old nanny who once had opened a “men stop”
Besides the 64 rest stops for horses, there are 3 “rest stops for men”.
That’s what I was told by nanny Long Fengxian, who was getting to the age of 100. This kind of “men stop” is a counterpart to the “rest stop for horses”, just like hotels that we have nowadays.
People who went in and out of the “men shops” are out-goers except for those in horse-gangs, including salt merchants, cloth merchants, jewelry merchants, foreigners and porters for the foreigners. Nanny Long’s “men shop” was established right at the original site of her house.
She had a good impression on the foreigners who once went in and out of the Peacock Lawn because “they treated people but refused to take money for the treatment.” She also told us a story in her own personal experience.
Nanny Long is warm-hearted, an essential quality among the owners of “men shops”, which, compared to the hotels we have nowadays, are just small low-class inns at the most, or just a shelter from the wind and rain. But here in this place, a man far away from his home got not only the basic warmth, and also a steadfast feeling when you see it, reminding you of an[FS:Page] oil lamp chasing off blackness in front of your eyes, reminding you of a basin of warm water chasing off tiredness, providing you with a simple but warm wood plate bed to power you up again.
I suddenly thought of that when my grandpa was robbed, whether the “men shop” which lent him clothes and served him with warm soup and meals was this “men stop”? Then, I thought about another thing, in fact the stops in the relay station are not only attractions on the ancient road, and also a hope and home to people on the journey with all sorts of circumstances, and even a culture for the stories on the journey with countless turns and curves……
