Xishuangbanna (西双版纳):Winter in Xishuangbanna is warm and spring-like, making it an ideal place to escape the cold. The region is home to tropical rainforests. Visitors can explore the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中科院西双版纳热带植物园) to see rare tropical plants or visit Wild Elephant Valley (野象谷) to observe the daily life of wild elephants.
Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州):The Samabu (撒玛坝) Ten Thousand Mu Terraced Fields in Honghe County are a sight to behold in winter. The terraces, built along the mountains, are majestic and orderly, with distinct layers and clear lines, showcasing the harmony between humans and nature. Under the sunlight, the terraces display unique light and shadow effects.
Zhaotong Shuifu (昭通市水富市):The Western Grand Canyon (西部大峡谷) is a national 4A-level scenic area. In winter, visitors can enjoy hot spring baths here, relaxing and rejuvenating with services such as hot spring soaking, leisure vacations, and wellness treatments. The hot spring water, sourced from 2,380 meters below the Jinsha River bed, is known for its “three highs and one low” characteristics, offering warmth and comfort in the cold season.
Meili Snow Mountain (梅里雪山):In winter, Meili Snow Mountain presents a stunning snowscape with high air transparency. The probability of witnessing the “Golden Mountain” phenomenon increases. When the morning sun shines on the snow-covered peaks, the golden light reflecting off the white snow creates an awe-inspiring view that attracts many tourists and photographers.
The most salient feature of the weather of Yunnan Province is that the daily temperature (night to day temperature) varies more than does the seasonal temperature (winter to summer temperature). That said, the weather also varies greatly in Yunnan depending on which region, north or south, where one finds oneself (the lateral-spatial dimension), just as it of course varies greatly with the altitude (the vertical-spatial dimension). Regarding the former, the weather in Yunnan Province varies considerably depending on whether one finds oneself in in the mountainous north (a temperate zone) – especially in the northwest – in the south (a tropical zone) or in-between (a subtropical zone). The subtropical and tropical zones tend to be hot and humid, the more so in the tropical than in the subtropical zone. The Tropic of Capricorn lies in the province’s tropical, southerly region.

The walled old city, from the Ming dynasty, contains traditional homes and towers from the Bai ethnic minority.
