Chinese Name: 华坪县滴水岩瀑布
English Name: Dishuiyan Waterfall in Huaping County, Lijiang
Dripping Water Rock Waterfall is located in Qingsong Village, Xingquan Town, Huaping County, Lijiang, Yunnan Province, just 11 kilometers from the county seat. The mountain rocks form a fan shape, with water cascading from a height of over 100 meters, famously described as “falling straight down three thousand feet, as if the Milky Way has descended from the heavens.”
During the rainy season, the waterfall is particularly majestic, with powerful water flows creating mist and a thunderous roar. If sunlight hits just right, rainbows may appear, adding to the breathtaking scenery.
At the base of the waterfall, there is a cave with two passages connecting to a spacious chamber of approximately 500 square meters. The hall is adorned with stone pillars in various shapes, while the ceiling is decorated with stalactites that resemble a starry sky, with water droplets falling like musical notes.
The water from the waterfall flows about 20 meters into a large pool, known locally as “Washing Eye Spring.” The Lisu and Miao people regard this spring as holy water, visiting annually to wash their eyes, believing it can cure eye diseases. There is a legend associated with this practice: after the deity Ersa created the world, he made seven pairs of people each day. One day, a demon named Chang Wang, who feasted on people’s eyes, caused Ersa’s creations to become blind. To remedy this, Ersa drew a stream of divine water from the heavenly river, and when people washed their faces with it, their eyesight was restored. This divine water is said to be the same that flows from Qingsong Waterfall today.
The area surrounding Dripping Water Rock Waterfall is picturesque. In the dense forest to the southwest lies the command center of the Lisu people’s uprising led by Tang Gui, known as Diwangping. In January of the first year of the Daoguang era (1821), the Lisu people rose in rebellion, electing Tang Gui as the “Earth King” to oppose the feudal lords who sold their cultivated land. With over 10,000 supporters, they captured territories including Yongbei and Dayao. The Qing government dispatched over 30,000 troops from Yunnan and Guizhou to suppress the uprising. By September of that year, the rebellion failed, and Tang Gui was killed. In recent years, remnants of iron spears and other artifacts from the rebel forces have been discovered in the area, and Diwangping has been designated as a county-level cultural heritage protection site.

English Name: Huluping Cave in Huaping County, Lijiang
Hulu Cave is located in Hulu Ping Village, Xinzhuang Lisu Ethnic Township, Huaping County, with geographic coordinates of 26º32.91′ N latitude and 101º10.85′ E longitude. The cave entrance is approximately 1,600 meters above sea level. The cave system is about 1,200 meters long, with the main passage extending roughly 800 meters. Inside, there is an underground river and a variety of unique formations such as stalagmites, stalactites, and stone pillars, each with distinct shapes. This cave is notable for its rich diversity and well-preserved formations, making it a rare find in the province. International experts have concluded that “this cave is extremely rare among both domestic and international tourist caves,” and World Geography Magazine has reported on it. The cave is located in a pristine area, underscoring its aesthetic, research, and economic value, which is both immeasurable and irreplaceable.
As you enter Hulu Cave, you can “feel the artistic creation of nature over millions of years.” The cave is steeped in a beautiful legend: long ago, the area around Xinzhuang Hulu Ping was plagued by demons and monsters that harmed the people, causing locals to flee for their lives. This situation was noticed by the seven guardians (the famous “Hulu Brothers”) surrounding Guanyin. They vowed to fight the demons, engaging in a fierce battle for forty-nine days, during which two of the brothers were eaten by the monsters. Just when things were dire, Guanyin descended to subdue the evil beings, ensuring the safety of the people. To prevent the demons from returning, Guanyin commanded the remaining five guardians to dwell in the cave forever, naming it “Hulu Cave.”
The development of Hulu Cave in Xinzhuang relies on the local resources of the cave, which is over 600 million years old and rare worldwide, as well as ethnic minority resources, the unique geographical and climatic conditions. It aims to create a 4A-rated tourist resort that integrates cultural experiences, geomagnetic health culture, Lisu ethnic customs, an ecological park, and agritourism, thereby opening the long-hidden door to this paradise for those yearning for a heavenly experience.
Hulu Ping Cave is located in the northwest part of Yunnan Province, within Huaping County’s Xinzhuang Lisu and Dai Ethnic Township, making it conveniently accessible. It is situated along the tourist route connecting popular destinations such as Yulong Snow Mountain, Lijiang Ancient Town, and Lugu Lake, as well as the tourism lines to Sichuan and the Panxi region.
The cave is well-connected by roads, with the ongoing construction of the Lijiang-Panzhihua Expressway passing nearby, making it an essential stop for tourists traveling between Kunming and Lugu Lake.

English Name: Wuping Reservior in Huaping County, Lijiang
Wuping Reservoir is situated 50 kilometers northwest of Huaping County, Yunnan Province, at the source of the Papa River, a tributary of the Yalong River. This medium-sized reservoir serves multiple purposes, including agricultural, industrial, urban water supply, and tourism. The dam of Wuping Reservoir is known as the “Red Flag Canal of Lijiang” and holds the title of the highest soft foundation dam in the world, standing at 52 meters high and 214.5 meters long. On May 8, 2020, it was recognized by Guinness World Records as the “Highest Soft Foundation Dam.”
Construction of Wuping Reservoir began in August 1958 but faced numerous interruptions due to national construction policy adjustments and complex geological conditions. The project resumed in early 1991.
The main canal construction involved the excavation of 589,000 cubic meters of earth and rock, the masonry of 17,000 cubic meters, and the pouring of 20,000 cubic meters of concrete. The dam stands 52 meters tall, with a reservoir capacity of 49.35 million cubic meters, irrigating an area of 77,440 acres.
Wuping Reservoir is a unique engineering feat due to the challenges posed by the soft soil foundation, which measures 15,123 square meters with an average depth of 12.4 meters. The collective efforts of the people of Huaping over 43 years resulted in the creation of this engineering miracle that benefits countless families, embodying the spirit of perseverance, unity, and scientific respect.
On May 13, 2020, it was announced that Wuping Reservoir’s dam received the Guinness World Record for being the “Highest Soft Foundation Dam” (TM = Trademark) after successfully challenging the record on May 8, 2020. The Huaping County Party Committee and government were recognized as the record holders.

Beiying Mosque(寻甸县北营清真寺) is located on Beiying Street in Rende Town, Xundian County. It was originally built at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, with its initial site in the old county city. During the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty, the original mosque was dismantled and relocated to the new county city, at its current location.
In the early years of the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, the mosque suffered repeated destruction by government forces during the suppression of Du Wenxiu’s uprising. During the Guangxu period, the mosque was in danger of collapsing. Local gentry such as Zhang Lianfang initiated fundraising efforts among Muslims within and outside the county for reconstruction. The mosque was dismantled and rebuilt in the 22nd year of Guangxu (1896) and completed in the 28th year (1902).
The mosque’s front courtyard includes three hall rooms and three side rooms on the north and south sides. The rear courtyard has four side rooms on both the north and south sides, with five worship halls in the back section. There are also ten rooms used as kitchens and ablution facilities for men and women. The architectural style is simple and traditional, commonly referred to as the Great Mosque.
Beiying Mosque has been the center of Islamic education in Xundian. In the 14th year of the Republic of China, the Huai Sheng Zhong Arabic School was established here. During the Republic of China era, patriotic religious organizations such as the Xundian Muslim Progressive Association and the Xundian County Muslim National Salvation Association were based in the mosque.
The renowned Islamic scholar Ma Weihai (1895-1983) taught at the Huai Sheng Zhong Arabic School for 15 years, training a large number of religious talents.
After 1958, religious activities were suspended, and the worship hall was repurposed for other uses. Since 1979, the Xundian County government has allocated funds for five renovations of the mosque. Since 2008, the mosque management committee has raised millions of yuan to rebuild seven rooms facing the street and the two side rooms to the south and north. They also constructed two minarets and a dome on the third floor, making the mosque very impressive.
