Chinese Name: 爱伲族耶苦扎节
English Name:Yekuzha Festival of Aini Ethnic People in Xishuangbanna
Yekuzha Festival(耶苦扎) is a traditional festival which belongs to Hani inXishuangBanna. It is held on Cattle Day(属牛日) June and lasts several days.People enjoy their selves ,visit relatives and hold some activities during the days.
On the day of ancient time,an insect disaster break out in Hani’s village. They prayed the god for killing insects by sacrifice, but it didn’t work.Day by day, their crops disappeared. However,a man called Apeimingye(阿陪明耶) use leaves to make insects be put on the road and be abused so that they could be punished.Several days later, the insects disappeared and crops came to life.So it is surprised for people to harvest.Later, after Apeimingye died, his son sacrificed for him by chicken every year.Since this event was spread, the day had become Hani’s traditional festival. Apeimingye named the day Yekuzha(耶苦扎) in order to memory his father because of Hanis’ name is made up from the end of father’s name and the begining of son’s name.
The festival was settled on a day of June which is suitable for growing of crops and the end of growing in order to memory Apeimingye(阿培明耶) and celebrate harvest. On the day, people inveite friends to hold a party and all sorts of entertainment activities. And because it’s said that swinging can avoid disaster, all of people want to swing in hurry. Before swinging, they ofen hold a ceremony. At the beginning,a old man hold a cup of wine and roll a rope .At the same time,he will sing a song and pour wine. Finally, people can swing after he swings. And a person who swings the highest and the fastest will be regarded as a hero. Therefore, people cheer for him or her.
At the beginning of “Yekuzha”(耶苦扎),mid-life men kill their pigs and cattle’s.Teenagers look for woods to make swinging. As for women, they are major in cooking.Swinging is an important activity on the day. When people swing, audiences shout, sing and sometimes make a strange voice. And the scene is very lively.
On the day, they hold horse riding, singing and so on.This makes a traditional festival become richer about activities than before.
Banpo Nannao Village(半坡老寨) of Mountain Village (南糯山)is a village which contains only Aini and it loacates in middle of Nannao Mountain(南糯山).There is a old tea plantation which has the largest area in the mountain. The trees are alomst two to five meters and belong to arbors. And the king of tea tree “Nannao Mountain Tea Tree”grows here.Aini live in Banpo Nannao Mountain.According to old man here, since Hani has came here for fifty generations from Honghe(红河) and Mojiang(墨江)so far.
Aini People’s song must be a wonderful custom. Almost everyone can sing it.Don’t forget to meet it.Especially sing it in the party.People usually sing it and drink at the same time.
The first cattle day of every July is Yekuzha Festival for Ainu. And its another name is Autumn Festival. The festival was the largest festival there in the past, but recently it isn’t thought highly. However, all of villages still use big trees to make swinging early and they dance and sing together.According to the old, swinging can avoid disaster .Sometimes teenagers play together and the higher man swings, the more favorable man will be.
During the time, children perform in return. They can perform alone or in groups and make swinging higher and higher. They show all sorts of dangerous performances.Childrens’ laughters and screams are very high and the voice spread in the sky.And I think not only the voice is high but also wishes can be high.Besides, children’s wishes for future is also high and wishes for Aini ethnic people’s(爱尼人) development and progress.

Bordering with Burma in the south, Jinghong is an important port city linking China with the Southeast Asian countries and regions, having a border line of 112.39 kilometers (70 miles). It covers a total area of 7,000 square kilometers (2,703 square miles), with thirteen towns and 86 villages under its prefecture. Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, PRC, is the only mega-city in Yunnan and the fourth largest city in western China. The transportation between Jinghong and Kunming is very popular. The railway between the two cities has not been opened yet, but now the China-Laos railway is under construction. After the railway is completed and put into operation, it will only take about 3 hours from Kunming to Jinghong city in Xishuangbanna Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, and it is expected to reach Laos of Vientiane during one day.
China – Laos Railway commenced construction on December 2nd, 2015 and is scheduled for completion by 2022. It will connect Kunming, the capital city of southwestern China’s Yunan Province, with Laos’ capital city, Vientiane. The China – Laos railway project is actually a section of the Kunming-Singapore Railway Project, which connects Kunming with Singapore, passing through Laos, Thailand, and Malaysia. Currently, Laos only has a 2.2-mile-long (about 3.5 kilometers) narrow-gauge railway, which cannot meet the demand of rail passengers and the development of the local economy. When this railway traversing the country is completed, it will first greatly mobilize the development of the Laotian economy, improving its transportation, boosting the tourism industry, and creating more jobs for the locals.
The Dongchuan Food Festival kicked off in the Dongchuan Food Street, where local cadres and the public enjoyed 2017 bowls of freshly made Dongchuan noodles, creating a grand scene of “colorful noodle forest, thousand people eating noodles.” Additionally, the world’s largest outdoor installation art of “a bowl of noodles” and the world’s largest shaped light box are also on display, both currently applying for Guinness World Records.
At the scene, three huge copper pots were arranged in a row, with water from Mount Guniushan (Fuzhaishan) boiling inside them. When the lids of the pots were removed, steam poured out, creating a spectacular sight. Each of the three pots weighs 180 kilograms and has a diameter of 1.8 meters, taking nearly 100 hours to make.
Twelve eye-catching noodles hung high over the food street, showcasing both traditional and unique rainbow-colored varieties. The colorful noodles include carrot, pumpkin, buckwheat, spinach, red cabbage, and fruit-vegetable blends. These noodles are not only beautiful and delicious but also healthy. Dongchuan boasts nearly 1,000 different flavors of noodles, but due to space limitations, only 299 types were displayed on site.
The food festival is based on the “Tongdu Street Poverty Alleviation Entrepreneurship Park” and features nine different business formats, including restaurants, night markets, local specialty exhibitions, tourist reception, urban exhibitions, e-commerce platforms, flea markets, children’s playgrounds, and mass cultural performances. This initiative creates a distinctive urban block while promoting employment and accurately alleviating poverty, forming an urban complex business circle with “one street, one park, one market, and one stage.”
The festival is divided into a dense snack area with 160 stalls and the “Dongchuan Local Specialties Street Food Fair” in the Poverty Alleviation Entrepreneurship Park dining area. The food street provides various forms of assistance to poor households, including labor employment, commodity sales, and entrepreneurship learning, helping increase their income through home-based opportunities.
The world’s largest bowl of noodles made its debut at the festival, expected to set a Guinness World Record. At the opening ceremony, a noodle dish with a diameter of 12.2 meters and a height of 12.8 meters was unveiled, featuring noodles being picked up by chopsticks in a large bowl. This “big bowl of noodles” symbolizes Dongchuan’s 3,000-year history of copper smelting, using purple and yellow copper as its main colors. The 24 blocks of noodles represent the 24 mining veins with the highest copper grade in Dongchuan’s ancient history. The bowl is inlaid with 24 pictures depicting the panoramic view of the “God’s palette” red land in Dongchuan, making it a new landmark of the city.
According to statistics, the first East Dongchuan Food Festival in October last year attracted 148,000 visitors, while Dongchuan City has a permanent population of only 50,000. The festival has become a new high point in the development of all-for-one tourism. Pu Jian, Deputy Director of the Trade and Service Department of Kunming Municipal Bureau of Commerce, noted that Kunming is planning to build a “World Food Capital” within five years, encouraging districts to explore their own characteristics for differentiated development. The gathering of noodle elites at this festival highlights Dongchuan as the “Home of Noodles.”
Three districts and counties in Kunming, including Dongchuan Food Street, have successfully created food streets. Dongchuan’s food street is strategically located on a major transportation route, quickly attracting popularity. Each district in Kunming is expected to have at least one food street, with food-themed activities held weekly. The fun and delicious food parties, like today’s Dongchuan festival, will become a routine for Kunming residents.
The Dongchuan Food Festival will run from January 21st to January 25th, lasting five days with a total of 160 special food booths. This event is a special activity for Dongchuan to welcome the upcoming Chinese New Year, filled with a strong festive atmosphere.

I believe everyone who travels to Dali will not miss the beautiful scenery of Erhai Lake. It is a pleasure to enjoy Erhai Lake on a cruise ship, but it is also a pleasure to rent a bicycle and ride happily along the road around the sea. The winding roads along the sea are covered with green trees. Although there are no special scenic spots, cycling on such roads is a kind of enjoyment. Facing the blue sky and sea, one always feels the urge to sing aloud. Erhai Lake is a plateau freshwater lake with beautiful scenery. It looks like a human ear. It is long from north to south and narrow from east to west. Erhai Lake belongs to Lancang River system, with a catchment area of 2565 square kilometers, an average water capacity of 2.82 billion cubic meters, an average water depth of 10.5 meters and a deepest depth of 20.5 meters. Next, I will recommend very popular tour routes and tips for you.
The whole journey around Erhai Lake is 128 kilometers, and the route can be selected according to one’s physical strength and time. Most of the sections in the west bank are far away from the lake, while the route on the east bank is relatively better. The whole journey around Erhai Lake is about 70 kilometers, close to the sea, with smooth road surface, comfortable riding, and relatively few pedestrians and vehicles. However, attention should be paid to the road surface of buses and trucks that occasionally travel. During riding, pay attention to speed control to avoid rushing into Erhai Lake. Along the way, fishermen can be seen pulling nets at sea, mending nets on the shore and counting fish and shrimp. In the villages along the coast, you can also see the unique Bai people’s residence. if you are lucky enough to have the chance to go to the color digging fair (the fair is on the 5th and 10th days of the Gregorian calendar), you can also join in the fun, taste snacks and sell some cheap melons and fruits back.

Chinese Name: 哈尼族嘎汤帕节
English Name: Gatangpa Festival of Aini Ethnic People in XishuangBanna
Gatangpa Festival, the grandest festival of the Aini (a branch of Hani) ethnic members, was held on 1 January 2013 in Pazhen Village of Menghai County where the 60th anniversary of Galanghe Hani Autonomous Township synchronised. What highlighted the event was the unique ethnic customs, religious beliefs, dietary culture and traditional fineries of such nationalities as the Han, Hani, Dai, and Lahu etc, giving full play to the diverse local ethnic cultures.
In Hani ethnic language “Gatangpa” means the renewal of everything on the earth, and the beginning of a new year. Gatangpa Festival is a traditional festival in Hani minority. It is told that in ancient times Gatangpa Festival could last for 15 days, taking ancestor worship and entertaining as the main content. The festival duration was changed to four days by the 14th Hani ancestor Zyuq Tanq Panq. As prescribed, the Festival starts from the first ox day and ends at the dragon day in each October.
Menghai is a vital tea planting area in Yunnan as well as the origin of the world famous Pu’er tea. Tea is a necessity to the Hanis in Menghai for festivals, celebrations and yet social life; the grand tea sacrificial ceremony, which manifests the harmony maintained between the nature and Hanis, is one of the dominating activities during the festival.
As the grandest and traditional festival of Hani People, Gatangpa is spent annually as the “New Year Festival” of Hani group. It plays a vital role in the ethnic cultures and numerous ethnic festival celebrations of Xishuangbanna Prefecture, and is an indispensable platform to display traditional ethnic cultures and propel the unity between different nationalities of Xishuangbanna.
Gatangpa Festival is the main festival of the Hani ethnic group in Xishuangbanna. The term “Gatang” in the Hani language has been interpreted in various ways; some say it refers to an era name, as the Hani people call their era “Gatang Era.” However, most people believe that “Gatangpa” signifies the renewal of all things or the revival of nature, marking the beginning of a new year. In July 1987, the Standing Committee of the Xishuangbanna Prefecture People’s Congress, in accordance with the collective wishes of the Hani people across the prefecture, officially designated Gatangpa Festival as the Hani ethnic group’s New Year festival.
Although the Gatangpa Festival has long been a traditional holiday for the Hani people, it did not have a unified date in the past. It is said that in ancient times, the Gatangpa Festival lasted for 15 days, primarily involving ancestor worship and feasting. During these 15 days, banquets and drinking were held daily, leading to significant expenses. By the time of the 14th-generation Hani ancestor, Zun Tangpan, the festival duration was set to four days, beginning on the first Ox day of October and ending on the Dragon day. The festival activities retained the traditional practices of ancestor worship and feasting and added entertainment activities. During the festival, people brew rice wine, pound sticky rice cakes, slaughter pigs and chickens, and prepare offerings of rice, sticky rice cakes, rice wine, meat, and tea to present before the ancestral shrine, the Apeiboluo, to pray and make offerings. Every household hosts banquets, inviting friends and relatives to drink together and exchange gifts to strengthen bonds. Villages set up swings and tops for activities like swinging and top-spinning. Young men and women dress in new clothes, go to the mountains to pick wild fruits and flowers, sing songs, and enjoy themselves. Men who enjoy hunting form groups of three to five to hunt birds or chase animals in the mountains.
In 1987, the Standing Committee of the Xishuangbanna Prefecture People’s Congress established Gatangpa Festival as the Hani ethnic group’s New Year festival, standardizing the celebration from January 2 to 4 on the Gregorian calendar. The festival activities are organized by township governments or village committees, focusing on cultural and sports activities. During the festival, young men and women perform traditional bamboo tube dances, long bamboo pole dances, and various cultural programs showcasing Hani customs. Competitions and spring outings such as swinging, top-spinning, and crossbow shooting are held. Singing on the mountains and enjoying oneself is a key part of the festivities. Many activities with feudal superstitious elements from the past have been replaced by healthy and beneficial cultural and sports activities.
