The Blang people, numbering approximately 82,400, primarily reside in various regions of Yunnan Province, including Mt. Blang, Bada, Xiding, Mengman, and Daluo in Menghai County, as well as Xiaomengyang and Damenglong in Jinghong County. They are also found in Mengpeng Town and Mango Village within the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. Additionally, there are scattered Blang communities in neighboring areas such as Simao, Lincang, and Baoshan.
The Blang people are known by various names, both self-identified and assigned by other ethnic groups. The names they use can vary by region: those in Xishuangbanna refer to themselves as “Blang,” while those in Simao use “Benzu.” Other names include “Lawa,” “Wu,” “Wuren,” and “Awa.” Historically, the Han people called them “Puman,” the Bai referred to them as “Buen,” the Lahu called them “Kapu,” and the Dai named them “La.” Following the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), they adopted the collective name “Blang.”
The Blangs speak their own language, which belongs to the Menggaomian Blang branch of the South Asian language family. Their language has two dialects: the Blang dialect and the Awa dialect. Although it does not have a written form, many Blangs are fluent in Dai, Va, and Han languages, with some also able to read and write in Han or Dai script, often using it for their historical and classical works.
Agriculture serves as the economic foundation of Blang society, with dry rice and paddy rice as the primary crops, followed by corn, sesame, melons, fruits, beans, and potatoes. They also cultivate economic crops such as tea, cotton, palms, and hemp. The Blangs are among the earliest and most skilled growers of the world-renowned Pu’er tea. Their diet mainly consists of dry rice, supplemented with corn, buckwheat, soybean, peas, and red millet. They have a preference for sour foods and enjoy chewing betel nuts. Homemade “sour tea” is a popular beverage among the Blangs, often served to guests or gifted to others.
The traditional clothing of the Blang people is similar across regions. Men typically wear collarless jackets with buttons down the front, loose black trousers, and head wrappings made of black or white cloth. Tattooing was a common practice among them in the past. Women wear tight-fitting short black shirts and narrow black skirts, and they consider black-dyed teeth to be beautiful. The Blangs reside in wood-and-brick cottages or two-story bamboo houses with railings.
The Blangs practice a blend of primitive religion and Hinayana Buddhism (a branch of Buddhism).
Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州) is an autonomous prefecture located in Southeast-Central Yunnan Province, China. It shares a border with Vietnam’s Lào Cai and Lai Châu provinces to the south. The name “Honghe” is derived from the Hong (Red) River, and it reflects the two major ethnic minority groups residing in the region: the Yi and the Hani.

Chinese Name: 红河县奕车人仰阿娜
English Name:YangAna Festival or The Girls Street Festival of Yiche Ethnic People
Location: 红河县大羊街乡富宁村孟子红都山
When waxberry is ripe, it means the early summer is coming. With the basic completion of spring ploughing, all grain seedling is rippling in the terrace and show people a green scene. The cuckoo is still singing on the willow near the field, as if to remind people not to delay the farming. At this time, the young Yiche(奕车) people living in the Honghe(红河) area of southern Yunnan(云南) will celebrate the annual festival called “YangAna” which is inherited by their predecessors. YangAna is also called The Girls Street Festival for the main people is Yiche girls.
It is said that the early Yiche ancestors organized some activities that can produce normally and make people excited for regulating body and relieving fatigue because of long-term simple and boring farming work. This model impairs people’s enthusiasm for work so that delayed production and affect the harvest. YangAna(仰阿娜) is one of the activities. In Hani Language(哈尼语) it means that people sing and play in their spare time.
There are 20000 Yiche people in Honghe including Yangjie(羊街), Langdi(浪堤) and Chegu(车古) Towns. The population of Yangjie accounts for more than half so that Yangjie is known as the hometown of Yiche. Yangjie is 65km away from Honghe. Looking from the outside with car is moving slowly on the rugged mountain road, there are many terraces, like ten thousand silver ladders and extending from the foot of the mountain to the top. They not only meet the needs of Hani people’s survival, but also become the most beautiful scenery in southern Yunnan. Countless photography enthusiasts come to southern Yunnan from home and abroad every year, aiming at this spectacular fairy with their lenses. However, our focuses are the ethnic customs of Yiche people and the unique costumes of Yiche girls for our trip.
YangAna is usually held on the first monkey day after Huangfan Festival(黄饭节) of Yiche people at the pass of Mengzhehongdu mountain,. This mountain is the holy mountain that Yiche people admire. It is said that on the day of YangAna Festival, Yiche people can forget the hardships of labor, and get relaxed after climbing to the top of mountain.
As time goes by, many young people in Yiche no longer wear their own ancient and peculiar costumes and they dress in fashion on the day of YangAna Festival. Women wear jeans, high-heeled shoes and colorful shirts with automatic umbrellas in their hands. Men wear suits and leather shoes with Sanxian in their hands, guitar on their shoulders, sunglasses on their noses, and they chase each other for fun. Now YangAna Festival has gradually evolved into a love event for young men and women of Yiche, in addition to the annual worship of mountain gods by the elders of Yiche, so some people call it “The Girls Street Festival”(姑娘街).

Chinese Name: 华坪仙人洞
English Name: Xianrendong Cave (Fairy Cave) in Huaping County, Lijiang
Xianren Cave is located 2 kilometers southwest of the center of Huaping County in Lijiang, Yunnan Province. It is a natural stone cave situated on a cliff, said to be named after the legends of immortals residing there. Ancient trees stand lushly in front of the cave, with vibrant blooming flowers, and a stream flows at the bottom of the ravine. A long corridor extends in front of the entrance, creating a beautiful and tranquil environment.
Originally, there was a hall with two couplets hanging on the door. One was written by Wang Luhe, the magistrate of Huaping County in the sixth year of the Republic of China:
“Occasionally coming to the distant wall amidst the dust and noise, I ask of the cave deep in the mountains, wondering if there were recluses here back then;
Sitting for a long time, do not mind the seclusion, wait until the wine is plentiful and the tea is finished, and temporarily be a god for half a day.”
The other couplet was written by Zhou Chuande, the magistrate of Huaping County in the eighth year of the Republic of China (originally from Feng County, Hunan):
“There truly are immortals in the cave; I ask where are Emperor Wu of Han and Emperor Qin? Just as summer arrives, I come again, bringing a chicken and a jug of wine, never tired of returning.”
On the left wall of the hall, there are two five-character regulated poems carved in stone, written by Zhou Chuande, reflecting the scenery of Xianren Cave and some social conditions in Huaping at that time. Inside the cave, there is water, a cool breeze, and a refreshing atmosphere, with various limestone formations resembling bamboo shoots and flowers, each with unique shapes, pure white like jade. After entering the cave for 20 meters, the space suddenly opens up, creating a dance floor illuminated by colorful lights, resembling a fairyland, enticing visitors to linger. The cave is nestled between mountains and water, equipped with pavilions and terraces, a pool with a fountain, stone tables, and stone chairs. It is not far from the county town, making it a great place for people to enjoy nature and relax.
