Cun Kangming - Rattan-weaving Craftsman in Heshun Town, Tengchong City

Cun Kangming （寸康明）was born in 1956 in Shizilu Village, Heshun Township, Tengchong County, Baoshan City, Yunnan Province. He is of Han ethnicity and is widely recognized as a leading rattan weaving artisan in Heshun Town, Tengchong City.

In 1974, Cun Kangming apprenticed himself to Zhang Xiaozhong, a craftsman who had returned from Myanmar, and began systematic training in rattan weaving. After three years of intensive study, he mastered the fundamental techniques of the craft, laying a solid foundation for his lifelong dedication to rattan artistry.

Professional Career and Achievements

In 1984, Cun Kangming took over the operation of the local rattan weaving factory. Through strict quality control and continuous product innovation, he successfully established the “Kangjia” brand, which soon gained strong recognition in the western Yunnan market.

In 1998, he was awarded the title of “Yunnan Provincial Folk and Ethnic Arts Artisan” and later served as Manager of the Heshun Kangjia Rattan Products Factory, further solidifying his influence in the field.

Craft Techniques and Artistic Style

Cun Kangming’s rattan weaving process involves multiple meticulous steps, including harvesting, sorting, washing, and sun-drying the rattan. He selects rattan branches and cores to form the structural framework, then skillfully weaves using rattan skin or tender rattan cores to achieve fine textures and durable construction.

His works highlight the natural beauty and resilience of rattan, combining functionality with refined craftsmanship. While rooted in traditional techniques, his creations reflect a strong sense of artistry and precision.

Works and Innovation

In addition to traditional rattan furniture—such as Luohan chairs, tea tables, and seating sets—Cun Kangming has developed a range of modern, design-oriented handicrafts. By integrating contemporary aesthetics with traditional weaving methods, he has expanded the expressive potential of Tengchong rattan craftsmanship.

Cultural Significance and Legacy

Cun Kangming’s rattan weaving embodies the thousand-year cultural heritage of the Tengchong region and reflects the dedication, patience, and ingenuity of local artisans. His lifelong work has played a vital role in the preservation, transmission, and revitalization of Tengchong rattan weaving, ensuring that this traditional craft continues to thrive in the modern era.
