Hong Kong is an autonomous territory on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary in South China. On September 23th, 2018, along with the opening of the Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong High-Speed Railway, the high-speed train between Hong Kong and Kunming also began operation. Hong Kong’s high speed train station – West Kowloon Railway Station has been put into service and operates daily trains to and from Kunming South Railway Station in Yunnan. The total length is 1515 kilometers and running hours are 7.5 hours. The ticket price for a second class seat is CNY 750. The top speed is 200 km/h in Hong Kong and 300 km/h in Mainland China.

Running Route of Hong Kong-Kunming High-Speed Train

Hong Kong – Guangzhou

A section of Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong Express Rail Link which is a part of Beijing – Hong Kong High Speed Railway, runs between Guangzhou South Station and Hong Kong West Kowloon Station. The total length is about 142 kilometers with two sections of Guangzhou-Shenzhen and Shenzhen-Hong Kong. The major stations along this railway contain Futian, Shenzhen North, Qingsheng, etc. 

Guangzhou – Nanning

With a length of 574 km, the railway mainly passes Nanning, Nanning East, Binyang, Guigang, Guiping, Pingnan South, Tengxian, Wuzhou South, Yunan, Nanjiangkou, Yunfu East, Zhaoqing East and Shanshui South. There are dozens of high-speed trains available between Nanning and Guangzhou. 

Nanning – Kunming

Nanning-Kunming railway was put into service on December 28, 2016. With a total length of 710 kilometer, the railway passes the major stations including Pingguo, Tiandong North, Baise, Funing, Puzhehei, Mile, Shilin West, etc. Around 20 pairs of Nanning – Kunming high speed trains are in service now and the running hour is around 4.5 hours. 

Hong Kong – Kunming via Guangzhou or Shenzhen

Due to the limited direct high-speed rail from Hong Kong to Kunming, if the only one high-speed train is sold out, passengers can transfer at Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Guangzhou is usually the best choice for passengers for more high-speed trains running between Guangzhou and Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Kunming. 

Hong Kong – Kunming via Guangzhou

34 pairs of G high speed trains runs between Hong Kong(West Kowloon Station) and Guangzhou(Guangzhou South Railway Station). There are 11 daily D high speed trains running between Kunming and Guangzhou via Nanning and 5 daily G trains via Guiyang. The G trains are more expensive on ticket fares but faster on train speed compared to D trains. The overall travel time is about 7.5 – 10.5 hours.

Apart from Guangzhou, you can also consider transferring at Shenzhen. Dozens of daily high-speed trains running between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, orignating/ending at train stations of Hong Kong West Kowloon, Shenzhen North and Futian. 3 direct G trains run between Shenzhen and Kunming, with the travel time of around 7 hours.

Best to Know

1. Taking a flight from Hong Kong to Kunming is the fastest way. If you travel at the low season, the fare of air ticket may be cheaper than the train ticket.

2. If you travel between Hong Kong and Kunming via Guangzhou or Shenzhen, it’s better to leave 0.5-1 hour for the transfer.

3. After arriving at Kunming South Railway Station, you can take the high-speed train to Dali or Lijiang directly.
