    Le Paidang: Guardian of Jingpo Ritual Traditions

    Le Paidang (勒排当) is a provincial-level inheritor of intangible cultural heritage in Yunnan Province, China. He lives in Gungzhai Village (滚寨村), Bangwan Village Committee (帮湾村委会), Longba Town (陇把镇), Longchuan County (陇川县), Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture (德宏傣族景颇族自治州). Known as a highly respected Dongsa (董萨)—a traditional Jingpo ritual master—he plays a vital role in preserving and passing down the cultural heritage of the Jingpo people.

    Family Tradition and Skills

    Le Paidang was born into a family of Dongsa (董萨)—both his grandfather and father were famous ritual masters in the local Jingpo community. Following the family tradition, he began to preside independently over local ceremonies in 1988 and has continued for decades.

    His Key Roles as a Dongsa

    • Master of Rituals: He is well-versed in the profound meanings and strict procedures of Jingpo sacrificial ceremonies, ensuring that rituals are conducted solemnly and respectfully.

    • Keeper of History and Oral Literature: He can fluently recite Jingpo creation epics, migration histories, and ancestral genealogies. His reputation has spread beyond Longchuan, with communities in Yingjiang (盈江), Mangshi (芒市), and Ruili (瑞丽) often inviting him to preside over their events.

    • Multitalented: Beyond rituals, he sings Jingpo folk songs, makes bamboo baskets and winnowing trays, plays traditional musical instruments, and even practices herbal medicine.

    Cultural Transmission

    Le Paidang is not only a practitioner but also a mentor. He has already trained three apprentices, ensuring that the sacred knowledge and skills of the Dongsa will be passed on to the next generation.

    The Role of a Dongsa (董萨) in Jingpo Culture

    In Jingpo traditions, a Dongsa is more than a ritual master. They are cultural custodians and intellectuals, transmitting the people’s collective memory and wisdom through oral traditions.

    • Ritual Leadership: Presiding over weddings, funerals, the New Rice Festival, and the grand Munao Zongge (目瑙纵歌) festival.

    • Spiritual Mediator: Acting as the link between humans and deities, praying for blessings and driving away misfortune.

    • Keeper of Customary Law: Assisting village leaders in governance and mediating disputes with traditional wisdom.
