“Daben ballads are unique to the Bai ethnic group,” Zhao Fukun said. “The balladeers tell stories in the Chinese language and sing in the Bai language.”
“I can adapt the Daben ballads because of my father Zhao Piding,” said Zhao Fukun. Modern media such as television and the internet have had a huge impact on Daben ballads, so he and his father had to think of a way to preserve this folk art.

In their village, government notifications and policies were often read out in the Chinese language, which was not well understood by the villagers. To solve the problem, Zhao Piding and his son began to convert some notifications and policies into Daben ballads. In 2016, when Dali City was trying to curb the pollution of Erhai Lake, Zhao Piding created two new Daben ballads, titled Erhai Lake of the Past and Protecting Erhai Lake, which soon became popular among the villagers.

The Bai ethnic group traditionally celebrates the Gwer Sa La Festival with Daben ballads. In 2008, after this festival became a Chinese national intangible cultural heritage, Zhao Piding was designated as its representative successor.

Photo taken on Dec. 30 2019 shows the construction site of Nujiang Arch Bridge of Dali-Ruili Railway in Yunnan Province. It is currently the longest-spanning railway arch bridge at 490 meters and will reduce travel time between Dali and Ruili cities from six hours to two. 

The main body of Nujiang Arch Bridge of Dali-Ruili Railway in Yunnan Province was completed on Monday, marking a construction millstone.

The bridge is 1024.4 meters long and 25 meters wide, allowing four trains to pass simultaniously.

It is currently the longest-spanning railway arch bridge at 490 meters.

He Changsong, bridge project manager, said it contains 46000 tons of steel, approximately 6.5 times that of the Eiffel Tower.

Dali-Ruili Railway covers 330 kilometers and will reduce travel time between both cities from six hours to two.

The news was updated on December 18, 2019. The Dali-Lijiang freeway in northwest Yunnan was granted a golden award recently, standing out among the 671 excellent projects, which were selected for the national awarding event.Built during 2009-2013, the highway project involved 6,165 engineering branches and 52,510 constructing items. All of the branches were rated as excellent, and all the constructed items passed the acceptance check smoothly.  Moreover, the 259-kilometer freeway is coupled with 80,000 specially planted trees including pistacia, acacia, and willows. 

Covering a land of approximately 1.3 square meters, the Cherry valley sits in the Wuliang township of northwest Yunnan’s Dali autonomous prefecture of the Bai minority.

Unlike any other places, cherry trees here have long been growing together with tea plants. It is this combined view that keeps luring tourists to the valley.

The peak blossom period would normally last a few weeks, from the November to December of each year.

Tourists can also enjoy a number of performances which take place on a regular basis these days, such as ethic singing and dancing.
