About Ancient Tea Horse Road
The Tea Horse Road, now generally referred to as the Ancient Tea Horse Road was a network of caravan paths winding through the mountains of Sichuan四川, Yunnan and Tibet in Southwest China. This was also a tea trade route. It is also sometimes referred to as the Southern Silk Road or Southwest Silk Road, and it is part of a complex routes system connecting China and South Asia.

Guzhou古州 Ancient Tea Horse Road, located at the Parrot Slope鹦哥坡 of Xinhua Township新化乡, Xinping County, Yuxi, is 12 kilometers from the government of Xinhua Township. It borders Wangshijiang Slope王石匠坡 in the east, Haiwei海味, Haozhidi蒿枝地 and Jiasa戛洒 in the south, Luchila River鲁尺拉河 and Xiaopuzi小铺子 in the west, as well as connects Guzhou古州 Wild Forest in the north through the main peak of Yizu Mountain迤阻山.
Features of Guzhou Ancient Tea Horse Road
Guzhou ancient tea horse road used to have large and small caravans every day, swaying the melodious bell, walking constantly, often attracting bandits in the Yingge鹦哥(Parrot) slope ancient tea horse road to robbery trade caravans. In 1940s, Li Runzhi李润之 set up Caravan Inn at the foot of the parrot slope鹦哥坡. He mobilized nearby villagers to lay a 5 kilometers long and 3 meters wide flagstone road and regularly cleaned it. As a result, the reputation of Parrot slope ancient tea horse road became more prominent.
Nowadays, the flagstone road is well preserved, and there are many hikers and tourists. The scenery of Parrot slope ancient tea horse road is beautiful and graceful. Both sides of the flagstone road grow dense primeval forest, quiet and pleasant. The trees on both sides of the road are mostly big pines, azaleas, camellia trees, peony trees and so on. Every spring, these flowers are in blooming, decorating the road into a sea of flowers. All kinds of birds are flying and singing in the forest, which makes the travelers relieve the tiredness.

How to Get There
Guzhou Ancient Tea Horse Road connects with Guzhou Wild Forest through the main peak of Yizu Mountain迤阻山. For transportation, you can refer to Guzhou Wild Forest. After arriving in Xinping County, another 1.5 hour is needed from Xinping county to Guzhou Ancient Tea Horse Road.

Why is Chuxiong Confucius Temple So Special
Although the Chuxiong Confucius Temple was built in the Yuan Dynasty, it was relocated in the Ming Dynasty. Due to its specific function to worship Confucius, the Chuxiong Confucius Temple is not much different from the local Confucius Temples at that time. At that time, Chuxiong was located at the important site of the Southern Silk Road. At the beginning of the construction, the scale was grand, but it gradually narrowed down in the later period.
After the liberation, the Confucius Temple was in disrepair and some buildings were damaged. At present, there are only Cangjie Hall(苍颉殿), Dacheng Hall(大成殿), Dacheng Gate(大成门), Sanyuan Bridge(三元桥) and Banchi Pool(伴池). Among them, Dacheng Hall is relatively well preserved.
In 1985, the Chuxiong City People’s Government allocated a special fund of more than 100,000 yuan to repair the Confucius Temple. The repaired Dacheng Hall, Dacheng Gate, and the Banchi Pool have not only maintained the architectural style of the original Confucius Temple, but also maintained the solemn elegance and grandeur. In 1987, the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government designated Chuxiong Confucius Temple as provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit.
Where is Chuxiong Confucius Temple
Chuxiong Confucius Temple is located in Lucheng Primary School, Middle Street, Chuxiong City, Yunnan Province. According to historical records, the County Confucius Temple was relocated in the 17th year of Hongzhi (弘治) of the Ming Dynasty (1504); the Prefecture Confucius Temple was relocated to the right of the County Confucian Temple in the sixth year of Jiajing(嘉靖) (1527).

Why is Yuxi Ancient Kiln Site So Special?
The Yuxi ancient kiln site(玉溪古窑址) is located in Wayao Village(瓦窑村), at the foot of Hongta Hill(红塔山), Hongta District. It was discovered in December 1960. According to research, the kiln started the production in Yuan Dynasty and got developed by people moved from Jingdezhen(景德镇), Jiangxi Province, one of the most famous areas for ceramics production.
Unearthed products include bowls, plates, cups, saucers, bottles, pots, kettles, alms bowls and so on. Pattern making methods are painting, carving, marking, printing, pasting and kneading, etc. The decorations are mainly flowers and plants, animals, birds, fish algae and houses, vivid and unique. There are green-glazed porcelains, blue and white porcelains, and black-glazed porcelains in the ancient kiln site, among them, blue and white porcelain for the most. Experts believe that the Yuxi(玉溪) ancient kiln belongs to the late Yuan and early Ming dynasty. on January 13, 1983, Yuxi Ancient Kiln Site was listed as a key cultural relic protection unit in Yunnan province. In December 1985, the ministry of culture of the People’s Republic of China approved to excavate and study the ancient kiln site. In this way, precious cultural relics buried for hundreds of years have been excavated, showing the historical origin and remarkable creation of Yuxi culture.
Features of Yuxi Ancient Kiln Site
Plenty of ceramics were unearthed at the site, including green-glazed porcelains, blue and white porcelains, and black-glazed porcelains. The identification of these porcelains shows that the production techniques at that time have reached a mature stage. The patterns on the blue and white porcelains unearthed here resemble those in Jingdezhen(景德镇) from Yuan Dynasty, which suggests the influence of Jingdezhen on the ceramics production in Yuxi. The research also shows that, beside Jingdezhen, Yuxi is the earliest area in China that started producing blue and white porcelains. The production techniques in Yuxi were innovated by skillful craftsmen and the products were endowed with distinctive local characteristics. The blue and white porcelains produced in Jingdezhen were covered with white glaze while those in Yuxi were covered with green glaze. The technique called “green glaze printing with blue and white patterns” on green and blue kettle with fish and aquatic weeds unearthed in Yuxi has never been seen in other ancient kilns in China. The kettle now is well-preserved in the Palace Museum and its picture is collected in the General History of China.
Where is Yuxi Ancient Kiln Site?
Yuxi ancient kiln site is located in the Wayao(tile kiln) village at the foot of Hongta hill. Yuxi ancient kiln belongs to the late Yuan dynasty and the early Ming dynasty. The discovery of Yuxi ancient kiln proves that Yunnan was also one of the early areas for the production of blue and white porcelain, providing abundant materials for the origin of Yunnan porcelain.

How to Get There
Hongta District is the political and economic center of Yuxi City, so transportation to Hongta District is convenient. When you are there in Hongta district, you can take a taxi to Yuxi Ancient Kiln Site.
1. By Long-distance Bus
There are many buses from Kunming to Hongta District of Yuxi. It is about 107 kilometers from Kunming East Bus Station to Hongta District bus terminal, about 1.5 hours. The ticket price is from 37 yuan to 55 yuan.
2. By Train
The fastest way to get to Hongta District of Yuxi is by train. You can take train at Kunming railway station or Kunming south railway station. Departing from Kunming south railway station spends less time.
Accommodation in Hongta District
Yuxi Ancient Kiln Site(玉溪古瓷窑址) is located in Wayao Village(瓦窑村) of Hongta District. Hongta district is political, economic and cultural center of Yuxi, and is ranked as one of the top 100 industrial regions in China. The economy is relatively developed.
