In January 1956, Xiongguan and surrounding areas were reassigned to Jiangchuan County (江川县). In 1966, Xiongguan People’s Commune (雄关公社) was established. It was renamed Xiongguan District (雄关区) in December 1983 and finally became Xiongguan Township (雄关乡) in 1987. The name originates from its former name Dianjuguan (甸苴关), also known locally as Diansuo Dam (甸所坝), a strategic mountain pass on the eastern slope of Laojian Mountain (老尖山).
