Yuanyang County is about 326 kilometers south away from Kunming, famous for its rice terraces, which was once crowned as one of the China’s 17 most attractive scenic places. Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces regarded as the largest and most spectacular in the world. It’s crafted out by the Hani people one thousand years ago and now is masterpiece of the ingenuity of Hani people. Based on the landforms of mountains and the local conditional, the Hani people push up the hill sides with different shape and size. After generations’ development, nowadays, the rice terrace in large scale and still in using. Also become a famous tourism place of Yunnan. At present, more and more tourists from home and aboard come to visit Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces, it is a nice place for photography and sightseeing.
The weather in Yuanyang belongs to subtropical monsoon season with an average annual temperature of 24.4 °C. Different season shows different scenery in Yuanyang Rice Terraces. It is available to visit Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces all year round. However, from November to the next April is the best time to catch the terraces the most beautiful scenery. Every year, after autumn harvest, the rice paddies will be filled with water. In the middle of December, wild cherry blossom are in bloom, there are wild cherry blossom and palm trees in the fields and the edge of fields. In February, cherry blossom, peach flowers, pear flowers, plum flowers and azalea bloom one after another. There are sea of clouds in the early morning. Until the middle of March, this period is a good time for photography lovers.
Spring, when the weather get warmer, is the season of sowing and transplanting the seedlings in Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces. In the spring time, the cattle is working in the rice fields, the local Hani people is transplanting rice seedlings and after several days, the whole rice terraces turn into green which looks so lively together with green mountains. During spring, temperature changes between day and night. So T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts as well as thin jackets are needed.
The temperature in Summer is higher than other seasons, though the weather is quite pleasant and not too hot. At that time, the paddies are luxuriantly green with growing rice stalks, full of vigor. On the Ailao Mountain, ultraviolet ray is strong in summer, you need sunglasses, sun cream and other sunscreen products. Also coats are needed to prevent a cold due to the large temperature difference between daytime and night.
Autumn is the harvest season, in the harvest time, terraces change its color from green to yellow, the whole Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces looks splendid. Rice terraces with different harvest times show different colors, either deep or light. Hiking along the Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces is a good way to enjoy the golden paddies and experience local Hani culture.
The Yuanyang Hani rice terraces are flooded in the winter and early spring before planting rice seedlings. The water-filled rice terraces are like thousands of mirrors reflecting the blue sky, green hills and mountains, or the sunrise and sunset, reflecting through this water surface of the terraces presents a marvelous view. It is the best time for photographing. If the time is right, you can join the long street banquet at the street of Hani Minority, which is the biggest festival there, like Spring Festival, and enjoy the local Hani Culture; Hiking along the Rice Terraces to see red duckweed and the colorful Rice Terraces will be a must-do in Winter when rice hasn’t been planted into field yet.

The total length is 1515 kilometers and running hours are 7.5 hours. The ticket price for a second class seat is CNY 750. The top speed is 200 km/h in Hong Kong and 300 km/h in Mainland China.

A section of Guangzhou – Shenzhen – Hong Kong Express Rail Link which is a part of Beijing – Hong Kong High Speed Railway, runs between Guangzhou South Station and Hong Kong West Kowloon Station. The total length is about 142 kilometers with two sections of Guangzhou-Shenzhen and Shenzhen-Hong Kong. The major stations along this railway contain Futian, Shenzhen North, Qingsheng, etc.
With a length of 574 km, the railway mainly passes Nanning, Nanning East, Binyang, Guigang, Guiping, Pingnan South, Tengxian, Wuzhou South, Yunan, Nanjiangkou, Yunfu East, Zhaoqing East and Shanshui South. There are dozens of high-speed trains available between Nanning and Guangzhou.
Nanning-Kunming railway was put into service on December 28, 2016. With a total length of 710 kilometer, the railway passes the major stations including Pingguo, Tiandong North, Baise, Funing, Puzhehei, Mile, Shilin West, etc. Around 20 pairs of Nanning – Kunming high speed trains are in service now and the running hour is around 4.5 hours.
Due to the limited direct high-speed rail from Hong Kong to Kunming, if the only one high-speed train is sold out, passengers can transfer at Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Guangzhou is usually the best choice for passengers for more high-speed trains running between Guangzhou and Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Kunming.
34 pairs of G high speed trains runs between Hong Kong(West Kowloon Station) and Guangzhou(Guangzhou South Railway Station). There are 11 daily D high speed trains running between Kunming and Guangzhou via Nanning and 5 daily G trains via Guiyang. The G trains are more expensive on ticket fares but faster on train speed compared to D trains. The overall travel time is about 7.5 – 10.5 hours.

1. Taking a flight from Hong Kong to Kunming is the fastest way. If you travel at the low season, the fare of air ticket may be cheaper than the train ticket.
2. If you travel between Hong Kong and Kunming via Guangzhou or Shenzhen, it’s better to leave 0.5-1 hour for the transfer.
3. After arriving at Kunming South Railway Station, you can take the high-speed train to Dali or Lijiang directly.
At present, there is a pair of high speed train available between Dali and Lijiang with the duration of about 1.5 hours. The ticket fare is CNY 52 for a second class and CNY 83 for a first class. The top speed is 200 km/h (124 mph). Dali and Lijiang are two hot destinations in Yunnan Province. Dali is a city in southwestern Yunnan of China, on the shores of Erhai Lake. Its history dates back to the Nanzhao Kingdom(8th century). The walled old city, from the Ming dynasty, contains traditional houses and towers from the Bai minority. Beyond the old city stand the Three Pagodas of Chong Sheng Temple, founded in the 9th century. Lijiang, a city in the northwest part of China’s Yunnan province, is inhabited by the Naxi and several other minority groups. Lijiang Ancient Town is compose of cobblestone streets, canals and Central Market Square with shops and restaurants. There are famous Black Dragon Pool and views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
