Xizhou Town is a county in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture located only 18 kilometers north of Dali, which faces Erhai Lake on the east and rests on Cangshan Mountain in the west. It is about 370 km from Kunming to Xizhou Old Town. There is no direct transportation from Kunming to Xizhou Old Town, so tourists needs to arrive at Dali first and transfer to Xizhou Old Town by bus or taxi.
How to Get to Xizhou Old Town from Kunming?
By Air
It’s not recommended to travel from Kunming to Dali by airplanes. It’s much expensive and time-wasting. Although the duration on the flight is only about 1 hour, while 3-4 hours are needed for the transfer time to and from the two airports. Located on the southeast bank of Erhai Lake, Dali airport is about 13 kilometers away from the city center.
At present, there are 2 daily flights between Kunming to Dali and two airport shuttles Line 1 and Line 2 going to Dali downtown areas. After Dali Airport arrival, take a taxi to Xizhou Old Town directly or take the airport shuttle bus to Dali Ancient Town and change the minibus to Xizhou Old Town. There are many taxis and chartered buses outside Dali airport.

By High-spend Train
Since June 29, 2018, the normal speed trains from Kunming to Dali are all closed and the high-speed trains are formally put into use, which cut the entire journey to 2 hours. There are more than 20 high-speed trains departing from Kunming South Railway Station to Dali Railway Station from the early morning hours to the late night around 06:30-21:30, with the stop at Kunming Railway Station in the downtown. After Dali Railway Station arrival, take the Bus No.8 to North Bus Station and change the shuttle bus to Xizhou Old Town. There are many buses available at the price of CNY 8.

By Long-distance Bus
Taking a 4-hour coach to Dali is an alternative choice for sometimes the train tickets have been sold out. Tourists can take the coach at Kunming West Bus Station to different stations in Dali City, which runs every 15–20 minutes from the early morning to the late afternoon daily. You can choose the proper one according to your needs. At Dali arrival, take the shuttle bus to Dali ancient town or Dali North Bus station to change the bus to Xizhou Ancient Town. Anyhow, a chartered car is most time-saving.

How to Get to Xizhou Old Town from Dali Old Town

Being around 15 kilometers from downtown Kunming（昆明）, the Western Hill Scenic Area（西山风景区）, is a mountainous forest park with beautiful scenery and chirping birds. Huating Temple（华亭寺）, Taihua Temple（太华寺）, and other historical sites are distributed in the forest. Its altitude ranges from 1,900 meters to 2,350 meters. It was also said, that there was once a phoenix-like bird resting here, however nobody recognized it. Therefore, the mountain is also called Biji（碧鸡）(Golden Chicken) Mountain. On the other hand, due to the fact that this mountain has a shape of Buddha, it is also called Sleeping Buddha Mountain（卧佛山）. Besides, when you look from the distant southeastern Kunming, the Western Hill will have the shape of a Sleeping Beauty（睡美人）.
How to Get to Western Hills from Kunming City
1. By Taxi
The taxi fare from city center to the Western Hill is around CNY 50. However, you may use Didi APP (Chinese Uber) to accommodate your different needs.
2. By Bus
Please take bus No.6, No.51, No.94, No.Auxiliary 6 to Gaoqiao Station（高峣）. The bus fare is usually CNY 1 for Ordinary Bus, CNY 2 for Air-Conditioned Bus.
3. By Metro
We highly recommend this method as it is the most convenient one. Please take Metro Line 3 to Xishan Park Station（西山公园）. The metro fare is around CNY 4 for departure station at downtown. Please be noted that the hub to transfer to Metro Line 3 include Kunming East Coach Terminal（昆明东部汽车客运站）for Metro Line 6 (You may take this line to and from the Airport), Dongfeng Square Station（东风广场）for Metro Line 2 (you may take this line to other regions of the city).
4. By Coach
Currently, there are several coach routes departing from the major transportation hub in Kunming. However, their schedule may vary according to actual seat occupancy rate. Therefore, we recommend you to consult the station that you are arriving in advance.

To travel from Hongta District (Yuxi City) to Xinping County, you can choose from the following transportation options based on the available routes:
1. By Car (Self-Drive or Taxi)
Distance: Approximately 92–93 km .
Travel Time: Around 1.5–2 hours depending on traffic and route.
Recommended Route:
- Take Kunyu Expressway (昆玉高速) → Yuyuan Expressway (玉元高速) → Exit at Xinping Interchange (新平互通) → Follow Xinping Avenue (新平大道) .
Alternative Route (Non-Highway):
- Via S102 & Lanmo Line (兰磨线), but this takes longer (~3 hours) .
2. By Bus

Direct Bus: Check for long-distance buses from Yuxi Bus Station (Hongta District) to Xinping County.

3. By Train (Limited Options)

Currently, there is no direct train from Yuxi to Xinping. You may need to travel to Kunming or another nearby city first, then transfer to a bus.

- Traffic Conditions: Some sections (e.g., Kunmo Expressway 昆磨高速) may have congestion, so check real-time navigation (Baidu Maps or Google Maps) .
- Alternative Transport: Ride-hailing apps like Didi Chuxing are available but more expensive than public transport.
