The Longchuan River (腾冲市龙川江) is a significant tributary of the Irrawaddy River within Yunnan Province, China, and part of the Irrawaddy River system. It originates on the western side of Gaoligong Mountain (高黎贡山) in Tengchong County (腾冲县), Baoshan City (保山市), and the southern border of the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture (怒江傈僳族自治州). The river begins at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters above sea level, with a main stream length of about 312 kilometers and a basin area of approximately 10,820 square kilometers. The river width ranges from 40 to 300 meters, with a natural drop exceeding 2,600 meters.
The Longchuan River contributes an average annual water flow of around 9 billion cubic meters and flows through more than ten towns, including Tengchong County, Longling County (龙陵县), and Luxi City (陆良市). Upon merging with the Mangshi River (芒市河) southwest of Luxi City, it becomes known as the Ruili River (瑞丽江).
The Longchuan River is one of the regions in Yunnan Province closest to the Indian Ocean, significantly influenced by the southwestern monsoon during summer and autumn. Annual rainfall can exceed 3,000 mm, typically averaging around 2,000 mm, with additional rainfall from the Gulf of Tonkin (北部湾).
The Longchuan River has a total length of 125.2 kilometers and a basin area of approximately 5,800 square kilometers. With a natural elevation difference of 322.2 meters, it features an average slope of about 2.58‰, making it an ideal medium-sized hydropower development river in Baoshan City.
In 1994, the Longchuan River Basin development was planned and subsequently approved by the provincial government. The city plans to construct nine cascade hydropower stations: Dipanguan (底盘关), Yawushan (瑶山), Shangzhai (上寨), Qushi (曲石), Longjiang Level I (龙江一级), Longjiang Level II (龙江二级), Longjiang Level III (龙江三级), Tenglongqiao (腾龙桥), and Lazhai (腊寨), with a total installed capacity of about 320,000 kilowatts. Due to changes in regional economic and social development, adjustments to the hydropower development plan are ongoing, now proposing 19 cascade power stations with a total installed capacity of 458,810 kilowatts.
The development of the Longchuan River is a priority for Baoshan City under the 11th Five-Year Plan and beyond, ensuring all hydropower stations follow the approved plans with necessary feasibility studies for any new constructions.

The development of the Longchuan River is a key focus for Baoshan City during the 11th Five-Year Plan and beyond. After completing the planning and revisions, which have been approved, the development strictly follows the established plans. Any hydropower stations to be constructed in river sections not originally included in the plan require technical, economic, and environmental feasibility studies.
During the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the main tasks for the Longchuan River include completing the construction tasks of the following hydropower stations: Lazhai with 120,000 kilowatts, Tenglongqiao Level I and II with a total of 105,000 kilowatts, Nongling equivalent shell with 108,000 kilowatts, Shizhu with 5,000 kilowatts, and Longjiang Level I with 24,000 kilowatts. From 2011 to 2020, development efforts focused on Dipanguan, Tiangsheng Bridge, Longwenqiao, Qiaojie, and Dapingtian cascades, integrating the necessary river regulation functions with preparatory work for the Dipanguan head reservoir and downstream power stations, ensuring timely development.

The architecture of Deang Village includes the traditional Deang big house, capable of accommodating dozens of people, small houses topped with felt hats, and romantic large and small public houses. There are also significant structures such as the “Longyang Tower” (龙阳塔) and Buddhist prayer halls and pagodas.
The Deang (德昂) ethnic group is unique to Yunnan, with a population of over 20,000, mainly distributed across Dehong Prefecture (德宏州) and Baoshan City (保山市) in the counties of Luxi (潞西), Lianghe (梁河), Ruili (瑞丽), Longchuan (陇川), and Longyang (隆阳). The Deang people predominantly practice Theravada Buddhism, with their folk activities closely linked to Buddhist ceremonies. Similar to the Dai (傣) ethnic group, important festivals include the Water-Splashing Festival (泼水节, also known as the Flower-Splashing Festival), Door-Opening Festival (开门节), and Door-Closing Festival (关门节). The traditional attire of the Deang is colorful, and oral literature, especially folk songs, is widely celebrated, with a distinctive tea culture.
Deang residential buildings are primarily constructed in a stilt-style with bamboo and wooden structures topped with grass. The architectural layout accommodates communal living, including the large Deang house and various smaller romantic structures. The customs of building sand pagodas during the Water-Splashing Festival are well reflected here. Traditional festivals for the Deang include the Water-Splashing Festival, Door-Closing Festival, Door-Opening Festival, and various other rituals like making arrangements and burning white firewood. The Water-Splashing Festival (locally referred to as “Jiaohua Water”) is an annual traditional celebration occurring on the seventh day after the Qingming Festival (清明节), lasting three days in total.
The Deang are devout Buddhists, with most villages having their own Buddhist temples and monks, including young novices (小和尚) who have entered the monastery. The Deang have a custom of dancing during major festivals, with the “Water Drum Dance” (水鼓舞) being a unique ethnic dance known in the Deang language as “Gagelingdang,” typically performed during celebratory events.
To reach Deang Village in Kunming, you can take a flight to Kunming Changshui International Airport (昆明长水国际机场) and then use local transportation options like buses or taxis to the Yunnan Ethnic Village. Alternatively, if you’re already in Kunming, you can use public transportation to reach the village.
The Wumeng Mountain Range, named after the historical Wumeng Tribe and Wumeng Prefecture, is the largest mountain range in the eastern Yunnan Plateau. It stretches across the border between Yunnan (云南) and Guizhou (贵州) provinces, as well as the junction of Sichuan (四川), Guizhou, and Yunnan. Geographically, it is located between 103°10′ to 103°30′ East longitude and 25°20′ to 27°45′ North latitude. The range begins in the northeast at Zhenxiong County (镇雄县), Zhaotong City (昭通市), Yunnan, and Bijie City (毕节市), Guizhou. It travels southwest through Hezhang County (赫章县) and Weining County (威宁县) in Guizhou, re-entering Yunnan at the border between Ludian County (鲁甸县) and Xuanwei City (宣威市). It reaches Xuanwei, Huize County (会泽县), and Qujing City (曲靖市), terminating at the eastern side of the Gongshan River (功山河)—Xiaojiang Valley (小江谷地).
The mountain range runs in a northeast-southwest direction, with an approximate length of 250 kilometers and an average elevation of about 2500 meters.
The Wumeng Mountain Range consists of three mountain chains:
The mountaintops are gently undulating, representing a residual plateau surface of the Yungui Plateau, having undergone uneven uplift. The region features numerous basins and deep valleys, with extensive karst topography, including residual hills, solution depressions, karst basins, gorges, and caves.
The Wumeng Mountains contain several rivers, including the Niulan River (牛栏江), Xiaojiang River (小江), Pudu River (普渡河), Nanpan River (南盘江), and Beipan River (北盘江).
Due to its high elevation, the mountain range significantly obstructs the winter cold winds from advancing westward and southward along the southern edge of the Sichuan Basin and the Guizhou Plateau. This has a critical impact on the formation of the quasi-stationary front in Kunming (昆明) and Yunnan’s climate. There are notable differences in climate, geography, and agricultural natural resources on either side of the mountain.
The mountainous region is rich in forest resources and mineral resources, including lead, zinc, copper, and coal. A famous line from the Red Army’s Long March poem mentions, “Wumeng majestic, walking like a mud ball” (乌蒙磅礴走泥丸).
The Wumeng Mountain Range boasts a diverse array of biological resources, with 3184 species of medicinal plants identified. Additionally, over 30 types of minerals have been found, including lead, zinc, copper, and iron.
Some notable tourist spots in the Wumeng Mountain area (4A rating and above):
The name “Wumeng” comes from the Yi ethnic group’s tribal name, as the region was historically inhabited by the Wumeng tribe. The name also derives from the local tribal chief’s name.
Significant cultural heritage sites in the Wumeng Mountain area include:
To reach the Wumeng Mountain Range, travelers can fly to Kunming (昆明) and then take a bus or drive towards Zhaotong City (昭通市) or Bijie City (毕节市). The range is accessible through several routes connecting these cities.
