With a long history, Xinjie Town played an important role in political, economic, and cultural activities in Yuanyang County. In the early years following the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the town was pivotal in organizing land reform and socialist construction. Jinlan Village belongs to the Heikou Village Committee of Chenghai Town, Yongsheng County. Located on the eastern slope of Baiyun Mountain and the western shore of Chenghai Lake, it is a picturesque place blessed with favorable natural surroundings. According to Qing Dynasty inscriptions on the “Xingzhi Pilu” stele, the village was formerly known as Junzaolang, and according to the Republican era “Yongchui Qianqiu” stele, it was called Chengjinzaolang. Locally, it is commonly referred to as Gezhaolan (Lang). The official name “Jinlan Village” was adopted in 1951. “Jinlan” originally refers to strong and harmonious friendship, derived from the “I Ching”: “When two people are of one mind, their strength can cut through metal; when they speak with one voice, their words are fragrant like orchids.” The idiom “Yijie Jinlan” means a friendship as close as that between siblings. The name “Jinlan Village” aptly captures this spirit.
The Daoganjie (Knife Pole Festival) in Jinlan Village is a traditional festival of the indigenous Yi people, held annually on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. The festival is named after the “climbing knife ladder” (commonly known as “ascending the knife mountain”) activity held during this period.
The Daoganjie activities take place at the village temple. Before the festival, villagers erect two 14-meter-high poles in the temple courtyard, secured with multiple ropes adorned with colorful flags. A total of 36 sharp steel knives, with their edges facing upwards, are fastened to the poles, serving as steps for climbing. The space between the poles is 34 cm wide, and the knives are spaced 36 cm apart. At the base of the poles, 33 bowls (representing the 33 families at the festival’s inception) are placed, 36 colorful flags are inserted, and 36 incense sticks are lit. On the day of the festival, performers climb the knife pole barefoot and, after descending, walk over two red-hot plowshares placed at the base.
The Daoganjie in Jinlan Village is both a demonstration of climbing skills and a local Yi folk activity. Currently, it is the most grandly celebrated traditional festival in the village. Villagers, regardless of how far they are, return home for the festival. The most thrilling performance of the festival is the “ascending the knife mountain, descending the sea of fire.” While this activity is often performed by men in other parts of Yunnan, in Jinlan Village, Yi women also participate in climbing the knife pole and walking through fire.
Jinlan villagers adhere to a belief in nature worship, viewing humans and nature as a life community. They emphasize respecting, conforming to, and protecting nature, and practice self-restraint in resource exploitation. This belief has made Jinlan Village the best-preserved ecological environment along the shores of Chenghai Lake. The village retains dozens of ancient trees and vast areas of primeval forest. The Baiyun Mountain behind the village still hosts a pristine forest, complete with “Shuidonggua” (water-retaining trees) and other rainforest wonders, as well as clear springs and waterfalls. The springs, located deep in the mountain’s forest, are referred to by villagers as the Dragon Cave and Sacred Spring, considered a natural sanctuary for the Yi people of Jinlan. The Dragon Cave spring is the largest natural water source for Chenghai Lake, earning it the title “First Source of Chenghai.” In 2001, Jinlan Village built the Dragon Cave Power Station here, with a designed flow of 0.2 cubic meters per second and an installed capacity of 34 kilowatts, thus ending the village’s history without electricity.
Jinlan Village sits at an average altitude of 1,550 meters, with a mild climate, an average annual temperature of 18.4°C, and an annual rainfall of 731 mm, making it rich in agricultural produce, especially terraced rice. The village has 460 mu of arable land and 9,100 mu of forest land. Its main economic activities include fishing, farming, livestock breeding, and labor export. In recent years, Jinlan Village has achieved significant results through the development of forest fruit economy and the protection of the Chenghai ecological environment. Yongsheng Chuangyi Industry and Trade Co., Ltd. has invested heavily in the village’s eastern 70 mu of land, establishing an artificial breeding base for indigenous fish of Chenghai, planting over 3,000 longan trees, and successfully breeding endangered native fish species. This contributes significantly to the scientific and standardized process of Chenghai ecological protection.
South of Jinlan Village, at the foot of Baiyun Mountain, lies Baiyun Temple, built during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, making Jinlan Village a popular tourist destination. The preservation of traditional culture and unique natural landscapes has made Jinlan Village a place where the diverse cultures of Yunnan converge.
Through natural protection, the inheritance of traditional festivals, and economic development, Jinlan Village has achieved a harmonious balance between ecology and economy, becoming a shining gem along the shores of Chenghai Lake.
A series of activities celebrating the “Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival” were organized to stimulate and harness the enthusiasm, initiative, and creativity of the farmers. These efforts aimed to enhance their sense of honor, happiness, and fulfillment, thereby gathering immense strength to consolidate poverty alleviation outcomes and advance rural revitalization.
At the event, a documentary titled “Development of Specialty Agricultural Industries in Ninglang County” showcased the progress of agricultural products in recent years. The display featured pure seed potatoes, sweet honey apples, organic red rice, high-quality Aconitum, green prickly ash, highland chickens, and the tastiest indigenous black-headed goats, painting a vivid picture of agricultural development, rural harmony, and farmers’ happiness.
In the joy of the harvest, awards were presented to the “Top Five” enterprises and cooperatives, the “Top Ten” potato growers (master growers), the “Top Ten” apple growers (master growers), and the specialized potato villages under the “One Village, One Product” initiative. These awards aimed to encourage more enterprises and cooperatives to participate in the vibrant development of “mass entrepreneurship and innovation,” injecting strong “Three Rural” momentum into Ninglang’s high-quality new development and creating a new era of high-quality agricultural growth.
Over twenty enterprises and cooperatives participated in the Ninglang Highland Specialty Agricultural Products Exhibition, showcasing a wide variety of unique products. These included potatoes, honey apples, honey, medicinal herbs, highland black-headed goat meat, ham, and peppers, as well as processed products like lip balm and essential oils made from green prickly ash. Unique Yi lacquerware, Yi clothing, and Pumi clothing were also popular among attendees.
Yi lacquerware, a historical craft hidden deep in the mountains, is an ancient, pure handcraft known for its exquisite workmanship and unique designs. The patterns often feature themes like the sun, moon, stars, mountains, rivers, animals, and plants, with a strong emphasis on symmetry and vibrant colors. Black represents solemnity and dignity, red symbolizes enthusiasm and bravery, and yellow signifies brightness and the future. The overall aesthetic is intense and cheerful, with a powerful impact.
At the event, Yi artisans demonstrated the creation of lacquerware, showcasing the intricate and rich designs that embody their cultural heritage.
The representative of Lijiang Yingmao Seed Industry Co., Ltd. expressed, “I am honored to be invited to participate in this exhibition. I hope to set an example and encourage more enterprises and people to get involved in the development of Ninglang’s agricultural products.”
Staff from Ninglang Rural Commercial Bank took this opportunity to promote financial policies supporting rural revitalization. They aimed to help more people understand loans for tobacco, apples, personal production and operation, and other financial products, thus addressing funding challenges faced by enterprises and individuals in entrepreneurship. They brought warm financial services and strong financial support to those in need.
During the Harvest Festival from October 10-13, Ningli Township in Ninglang County hosted a rice field fish experience activity. The township’s 25.3 hectares of rice fields attracted many “fish catchers” who enjoyed the ecological rice flower fish, ate farmhouse meals, and experienced the joy of the harvest festival.
Activities such as timed fish catching, consumption raffles, sharing and liking posts to receive ecological rice, fishing, and farmhouse picking allowed people to immerse themselves in the happiness of the Harvest Festival.
The Ninglang 2022 Harvest Festival utilized both offline and online presentations to engage the public in agricultural and rural work.
The festival featured a variety of activities, including special events for seed potatoes under the “One County, One Industry” initiative, Ninglang apple events, business negotiations for seed potatoes, forums on high-quality development of Ninglang’s highland agriculture, highland specialty agricultural product exhibitions, online promotions via Douyin, livestreaming by internet celebrities, and rice field fish catching experiences in Ningli Township. These activities highlighted the role of farmers, accelerated agricultural development, rural prosperity, and farmers’ wealth, and paved the way for high-quality agricultural development, driving rural revitalization.
On the morning of October 10, the 2022 Ninglang County “Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival” series of activities, themed “Gratitude to the Party, Celebrate the Harvest, Welcome the 20th Party Congress,” was grandly opened at Wange Square. County Party Secretary Zhang Wei attended the opening ceremony and announced the commencement, while Deputy Secretary and County Mayor Li Jianyong delivered a speech.
At 10 a.m., Wange Square was bustling with activity, filled with the fragrance of fruits. The opening ceremony of the 2022 Ninglang County “Chinese Farmers’ Harvest Festival” was held grandly here.
The opening event recognized the “Top Five” potato enterprises and cooperatives, the “Top Ten” potato growers, the specialized potato villages under the “One Village, One Product” initiative, and the “Top Ten” apple growers. Zhang Wei, Li Jianyong, and other leaders presented certificates to the award-winning enterprises and individuals. Some enterprise representatives gave speeches on “Gratitude to the Party, Listen to the Party, Follow the Party,” while financial institution representatives introduced policies supporting rural revitalization.
After the opening ceremony, Zhang Wei, Li Jianyong, and other leaders visited various exhibition areas, engaging with enterprise and cooperative representatives, sampling products, and learning about production and sales.
The festival, lasting four days, included activities such as on-site production and sales matchmaking, the Ninglang County Highland Specialty Agricultural Industry High-Quality Development Forum, and the “One County, One Industry” business negotiation meeting for seed potatoes, Ninglang apple events, and rice field fish catching experiences in Ningli Township. Professional teams were also invited to hold highland specialty agricultural product exhibitions and online promotions via Douyin and livestreaming.

Chinese Name:宁蒗县端午节(卖药根)
English Name: Duanwu Herbs Festival in Ninglang County, Lijiang
As the annual Dragon Boat Festival approaches, the spotlight in Ninglang County shifts away from traditional rice dumplings to a diverse array of herbal roots. On this day, the county town bustles with crowds, filled with the fragrant aroma of medicinal herbs, creating a unique festive atmosphere.
Traditionally known as the Dragon Boat Festival, in Ninglang it is affectionately referred to as the “Herbal Root Festival.” Alongside rituals honoring Qu Yuan, eating rice dumplings, and racing dragon boats, the Herbal Root Festival has become a significant aspect of how people in Ninglang celebrate the festival.
The practice of herbal cuisine and health maintenance has a long history in Ninglang, which is renowned as the “Kingdom of Medicinal Herbs” in Yunnan Province. With twelve ethnic groups residing here, each has its own unique knowledge of different herbs. The Dragon Boat Festival has evolved into a grand showcase and trading opportunity for these herbs.
Days before the festival, diligent locals venture into the mountains to search for various herbs, hoping for a fruitful harvest, particularly during favorable weather conditions. Equipped with bamboo baskets and small hoes, they embark on these journeys, often encountering unexpected treasures and wealth along the way.
Early on the morning of the Dragon Boat Festival, the market comes alive with activity. People rush to the marketplace at dawn, filled with anticipation, hoping to fetch a good price for the herbs they have collected. Simultaneously, vendors engage in exchanges, selling their herbs while also purchasing those they need. Year after year, this cycle of trade has contributed to the grand herbal trading activities that define Ninglang’s Dragon Boat Festival.
On the day of the festival, residents of Ninglang bring the herbs they’ve collected in advance to sell at the market. This spontaneously forms a temporary street dedicated to herbs, with hundreds of stalls attracting a continuous stream of buyers seeking various medicinal herbs. The market exudes a warm and festive atmosphere.
The herbs purchased from the market, such as Aristolochia, Gentiana, Codonopsis, and Angelica, are used to prepare medicinal cuisine. For the local people of Ninglang, the customs of gathering herbs in the mountains, buying them at the market, and cooking them at home have become deeply rooted traditions. Thus, the “Herbal Root Festival” has become a symbol of the Dragon Boat Festival in Ninglang County, reflecting the local people’s reverence for herbal culture and their commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
