History and Culture

A’nahua Yi Ethnic Township (安化彝族乡) has a long and rich history. The Yi people are indigenous to the southwest region of China, with roots tracing back to ancient times. According to historical records, during the Han Dynasty, the Qiang people evolved into the Dianbo (滇僰), which then further split into the Eastern Cuan Wuman (东爨乌蛮) and Western Cuan Baiman (西爨白蛮). It was not until the Yuan Dynasty that the Yi ethnic group began to take form from the Eastern Cuan Wuman. During the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, many Yi people migrated from surrounding areas to settle in A’nahua. The name A’nahua (安化) comes from the surnames An (安) and Hua (花), the first settlers during the early Ming period. The township government is based in A’nahua Village (安化村).
