Yijiayuan Coffee Manor in Baoshan

Yijiayuan Coffee Manor was recognized as one of the first batch of “Yunnan Province Boutique Coffee Plantations” in a seminar and tour event titled “Tasting Yunnan’s Premium Coffee,” held on November 23, 2022, in Baoshan City (保山市). This recognition by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (云南省农业农村厅) was part of an initiative to promote the development of high-quality coffee in Yunnan. The manor meets the required standards of having a complete coffee industry chain, from planting to processing, and integrating cultural tourism activities.

As one of the five enterprises from Baoshan selected, Yijiayuan Coffee Manor achieved provincial-level recognition, demonstrating that its coffee plantation covers over 1,000 acres, produces no less than 20 tons of premium coffee beans annually, and generates annual sales of over 10 million RMB.

Location and Background

Located in Mangkuan Township (芒宽乡), Longyang District (隆阳区), Baoshan City (保山市), the manor is situated in the Gaoligong Mountain National Ecological Protection Area (高黎贡山国家级生态保护区). The unique dry-hot valley climate of the region, with an average annual temperature of around 20°C, contributes to the cultivation of Baoshan small coffee beans (保山小粒咖啡), known for their smooth flavor, slight fruity taste, and non-bitter aftertaste. In November 2022, the manor was officially listed as one of the first batch of Boutique Coffee Plantations in Yunnan Province, with a plantation area reaching 1,393 acres, including 800 acres dedicated to premium coffee cultivation. Its annual coffee production exceeds 20 tons, with sales revenue surpassing 10 million RMB.

Recognition and Certification

  • Location: Yunnan Province (云南省)

  • Recognition Date: November 2022

  • Responsible Authority: Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (云南省农业农村厅)

  • Industry Status: A key entity in Yunnan’s largest coffee-producing area.

  • Plantation Area: 1,393 acres (2021)

Certification Process and Background

The Yunnan Province Boutique Coffee Plantation Certification Management Measures (Trial) was released on September 30, 2022, outlining criteria for plantations to meet certain quantitative standards, including plantation size, annual sales, and coffee bean production. These plantations must also offer cultural and leisure tourism experiences. After the initial selection of 12 candidates, Yijiayuan Coffee Manor was recognized on November 23, 2022, during a ceremony in Baoshan City, alongside nine other coffee plantations. This event marked the first time the coffee industry was incorporated into Yunnan’s provincial “Top 10 Specialty Products” selection system.

The recognition was in line with the Yunnan Agricultural Modernization Three-Year Action Plan (2022-2024), with the goal of enhancing the visibility of high-quality coffee in the province.

Functions and Positioning

As a provincial-level boutique coffee plantation, the core functions of Yijiayuan Coffee Manor include:

  • Planting and Processing: Standardized coffee planting techniques and small-bean coffee processing methods.

  • Cultural and Tourism Integration: Providing an immersive experience from coffee picking to roasting.

  • Brand Demonstration: Serving as a promotional window for Baoshan’s (保山) coffee industry.

According to provincial goals, such plantations are expected to help increase the proportion of high-quality coffee in Yunnan from 10% (in 2021) to higher levels.

Industry Policies and Support

The provincial government supports the development of boutique coffee plantations through several initiatives:

  • Seed Variety Promotion: Optimizing the structure of small-bean coffee varieties.

  • Processing Upgrades: Promoting advanced processing techniques such as washed and honey processing.

  • Brand Development: Building a provincial-level regional public brand matrix.

In 2022, the total output value of the coffee industry chain in Yunnan reached 31.63 billion RMB, but there is still room for growth in the fine processing sector.

Industry Status and Challenges

Baoshan City is one of the main coffee-producing areas in Yunnan, with five enterprises selected in the first batch of boutique plantations in 2022. The city’s coffee plantation area accounts for approximately 20% of the province’s total. However, challenges remain:

  • Insufficient Standardization: Some plantations still use traditional, extensive farming methods.

  • Limited Brand Premium: Most coffee products are exported as raw beans.

  • Underdeveloped Integration of Industry and Tourism: The infrastructure for cultural tourism is still in the early stages.

The Yunnan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs is working on integrating planting, processing, and consumer experiences into a complete industry chain.
