As crops mature, the terraces transform into vibrant shades of green, yellow, and red, offering a continually changing visual spectacle.

In May 2013, the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for their outstanding cultural landscape and sustainable agricultural practices .
The Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces (元阳梯田) are located in the southern part of the Ailao Mountains (哀牢山) in Yuanyang County (元阳县), Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州), Yunnan Province (云南省). These terraces are a remarkable agricultural civilization wonder jointly created by the Hani people (哈尼族) and other ethnic groups under special geographic and climatic conditions. The total area of the terraces is approximately 1 million acres (约100万亩).
Geographic Location
The specific location of the Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces (元阳梯田) is in Qingkou Village (箐口村), Xinjie Town (新街镇), within Yuanyang County (元阳县), situated in the southern part of the Ailao Mountains (哀牢山). Yuanyang County (元阳县) is located between 115°52′—116°8′ E and 29°26′—29°41′ N, covering an area approximately 25 kilometers in length and 10 kilometers in width. The highest peak in the area is Hanyang Peak (汉阳峰), with an elevation of 1,474 meters.
Geographical Features
The terrain of the Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces (元阳梯田) mainly includes plateau terrain with significant undulations. The contour lines are highly curved and dense, indicating a substantial variation in elevation. The rice terraces adapt to the changes in the mountainous terrain, with larger terraces cultivated in flatter areas and smaller terraces in steeper areas. Even small gaps along the riverbanks or rocky crevices are utilized for terracing. As a result, the terraces vary in size, with some covering several acres, while others are as small as a handful of rice husks.
Being around 250 kilometers away from Kunming（昆明）, the County of Yuanmou（元谋县） covers a total area of 2,021.69 square kilometers, with a total population of 215,795 in 2010, is located on the northern Central Yunnan Plateau, and borders on Wuding（武定） to the east, Lufeng（禄丰） to the south, Dayao（大姚） to the west, Huili of Sichuan（四川会理） to the north, Mouding（牟定） to the southwest, Yongren（永仁） to the northwest. It is also the first place of discovering “Yuanmou Man” in China, with a nickname of “The Hometown of Eastern People.” Its administrative headquarter is located at Yuanma Town（元马镇）.
Yuanmou is a major vegetable production base in Yunnan, of whose product not only sales well domestically in 157 major and medium cities, but also in South Korea, Japan, Russia, the United States of America, the European Union, as well as Southeast Asian countries, for more than 30 thousand tons of onion, kidney bean, burdock, chive and such annually.

By Bus
Highways in Yuanjiang area go to all directions. At Kunming South Bus Station(南部客运站), there are several buses running to Yuanjiang county, departing at 09:00, 12:00, 15:20, 16:30, 18:00, 19:30. The ticket fare ranges from CNY 75-90 and the the journey take about 3 hours. Kunming South Bus Station lies at No.7, Shangbo Street of Guandu District(昆明官渡区商博街7号) and tourists can get there by taking Bus No. C71, 209 or subway line 1, and also taxi.
By Train
The railway connecting Yuanjiang and Kunming is under construction. At present, tourists can take trains to Yuxi and then take bus to Yuanjiang. It’s the best choice for you to take high-speed rail to Yuxi Station which only takes 30 minutes. At Yuxi Chengnan Bus Station(玉溪城南汽车客运站), there are more than 20 buses heading to Yuanjiang county. The departure time is 06:30, 07:00, 07:40, 08:00, 08:40, 09:20, 09:40, 10:00, 10:20, 11:00, 11:40, 12:20, 12:50, 13:20, 13:40, 14:00, 14:40, 15:00, 15:20, 16:00, 16:20, 16:50, 18:20. Yuxi High-speed Railway Station is close to Chengnan Bus Station and tourists can take bus No.11 getting there.
