With Wenhai Lake in the foreground and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain towering in the background, the tranquil Naxi village of Wenhai has became a pretty sight, especially in the rainy season (May to August) when its lush banks are covered with splendid blooms of wildflowers and primroses. Enjoy a relaxing walk in the meadows of Wenhai and watch alpine animals such as yaks, miniature horses, black pigs, goats and sheep grazing.

✨This one-day cultural and nature tour offers a perfect blend of Naxi history, village life, and highland scenery. Begin in Baisha Ancient Town, the earliest settlement of the Naxi people and the cradle of the Mu Clan’s Tusi regime. Wander through ancient Ming-dynasty architecture and admire the tranquil beauty of this historic town. You will also enjoy warm Naxi hospitality and share a traditional lunch with a local family—an intimate cultural encounter seldom found in regular tours. ✨Continue to Wenhai Lake, a seasonal alpine wetland hidden on a high mountain basin beneath Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. During spring and summer, the meadows burst into color with wildflowers and primroses, making Wenhai one of Lijiang’s most picturesque pastoral landscapes. Enjoy a relaxing walk through open grasslands where yaks, miniature horses, goats, black pigs and sheep graze freely. From Lijiang, we drive to Baisha Ancient Town which is one of the oldest towns in Lijiang City. It got its name “Baisha” meaning “white sand” from the natural white sand in the area. It was the cradle-land of the Tusi Dynasty evolved from the Mu Clan. It was also the earliest settlement of the Naxi people. There are many ancient constructions built in the Ming Dynasty. Enjoy the traditional hospitalitybof Naxi People and have lunch with them.

From Baisha we drive to Wenhai Lake. The Wenhai lake is a seasonal alpine lake and wetland. Throughout the Spring and Summer. The Wenhai lake basin is one big grazing ground with various little streams winding through the grassland. Water collects on the south end of the basin, then disappears from the ground (through the Karst rock formation underneath) flowing toward Lashihai to the south. Meet local people in the village and experience their culture. Afterwards, drive back to Lijiang.

Travel Tips

The Wenhai area sits at higher altitude than Lijiang, so walk slowly and stay well-hydrated, especially in warm seasons. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the paths around the village and meadows may be uneven or muddy during the rainy months from May to August. A lightweight jacket or raincoat is recommended because mountain weather changes quickly.

During spring and summer, strong sunlight and UV radiation are common—apply sunscreen and wear a hat. If visiting in the rainy season, bring an umbrella or protective cover for your camera and phone. Morning and late afternoon temperatures drop noticeably, so keep an extra layer with you.

Please respect Naxi customs when visiting Baisha and Wenhai villages. Always ask for permission before photographing local residents or their livestock. Do not approach or feed grazing animals without guidance from your guide.

Since Wenhai Lake is a seasonal lake with streams and wetlands, watch your step near soft or damp ground. Mobile connection may be weak in the mountains, so prepare offline maps or keep essential contacts written down. With proper preparation, this tour offers a gentle and highly rewarding experience filled with culture, scenery and peaceful village life.
