Shenhecun Mosque, situated in Shenhecun Village within Dacang Town, Weishan County, Yunnan Province, has a rich history dating back to the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The village is located on the southern bank of the Shengouhe River, approximately 300 meters east of Dacang Town, giving rise to its name.

Historical Background

  • Foundation: Built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Shenhecun Mosque suffered destruction during the failed uprising led by Du Wenxiu in 1872, during the 11th year of the Tongzhi Emperor’s reign. In the early Republic of China period, it was reconstructed as a humble house for worship in the village.
  • Development: In 1917, through funding from multiple sources, the pilgrimage hall (朝真殿) was constructed using a “three-to-five” civil structure. In 1946, a pavilion-style minaret (宣礼楼) with four quadrangles, covering an area of 520 square meters, was added. From 1977 to 1978, significant renovations expanded the hall into a “five-to-seven” civil structure. The pilgrimage hall features a double-eaved Jehiel mountain-style roof and spans an area of 806 square meters.
  • Recent Rebuilds: In 1997, a brick structure was incorporated into the existing three-layer building, including a basement. Shenhecun Mosque was designated as a state model mosque in 2002.
