It borders Jiuxiang (九乡) to the east, Bei Gu Cheng Town (北古城镇) to the southwest, and Malong District (马龙区) to the north. The town is approximately 19 kilometers away from the center of Yiliang County.
The region covers an area of 194.38 square kilometers and has a population of about 19,363 as of the end of 2019. Originally part of Lunan County (路南县), Gengjiaying was incorporated into Yiliang County in 1956. In 1987, it was designated as Gengjiaying Yi and Miao Ethnic Town, a township with administrative and cultural significance.
