Mucheng Yi and Lisu Ethnic Township (木城彝族傈僳族乡) is located in the southwest of Longling County (龙陵县), Baoshan City (保山市), Yunnan Province (云南省). The township lies in a strategic border area, bordered to the south by Myanmar (缅甸) across the Nujiang River (怒江), to the west by Mangshi Zhongshan Township (芒市中山乡) in Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture (德宏傣族景颇族自治州), and to the east by Pinda Township (平达乡) and Mengpeng Town (勐捧镇) in Lincang City (临沧市). Covering an area of 234.2 square kilometers, Mucheng Yi and Lisu Ethnic Township has a population of 9,465 people as of 2019.

History of Mucheng Township

The area has a long history that dates back to the Ming Dynasty (明朝), where it was known as Pingjia Tusha (平戛土舍) in 1585. Over time, the name and administrative status have changed:

• In 1987, it was officially named Mucheng Yi and Lisu Ethnic Township.

• Over the years, it evolved through various stages, including being part of Pinda Commune and Anping Township (安平乡).

Geographic Features

Mucheng Yi and Lisu Ethnic Township is located at the northern edge of the Gaoligong Mountains (高黎贡山), near the lower reaches of the Nujiang River (怒江). The region features a varied topography with highlands to the east and lower valleys to the west, offering a range of scenic vistas.
