    overview

Hidden deep in the Nujiang Grand Canyon (怒江大峡谷), Mangkuan Yi and Dai Ethnic Township (芒宽彝族傣族乡) is a vibrant settlement known as “Manghuan (芒焕)” in Dai (傣族) language, meaning “a lively and bustling village.” Today, it is celebrated as a National Ecological Township of China, a place where diverse ethnic groups live together in harmony.

    ? Location

Mangkuan Yi and Dai Ethnic Township (芒宽彝族傣族乡) belongs to Longyang District (隆阳区), Baoshan City (保山市), Yunnan Province. It lies in the northwestern part of Longyang, nestled between the eastern slopes of the Gaoligong Mountains (高黎贡山) and the Nu Mountains (怒山), along the Nujiang Gorge (怒江峡谷).

    • East: borders Wama Yi and Bai Township (瓦马彝族白族乡), Wafang Yi and Miao Township (瓦房彝族苗族乡), and Yangliu Bai and Yi Township (杨柳白族彝族乡)

    • South: connects with Lujiang Town (潞江镇)

    • West: across the Gaoligong Mountains, neighboring Tengchong City (腾冲市)

    • North: borders Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture (怒江傈僳族自治州)

The township covers 540 sq km (some records note 544 sq km). Its highest point is Baifeng Slope (白风坡) at 3,622.9 m, while the lowest lies at the Lujiang (潞江) border at just 686 m — creating a dramatic elevation difference of nearly 3,000 m.

    ? Area and Population

As of 2021, Mangkuan had a total population of 48,594, with ethnic minorities making up 68%. More than 20 ethnic groups live here, including Yi (彝族), Dai (傣族), Lisu (傈僳族), Bai (白族), and Miao (苗族).

    • Republic of China: administrative adjustments, in 1940 part of Shangjiang Township (上江乡)

    • 1952: became Shangjiang District (上江区)

    • 1958: renamed Mangkuan Commune (芒宽公社)

    • 1984: Mangkuan District (芒宽区)

Mangkuan is both culturally diverse and naturally spectacular:

    • Scenery: With Gaoligong Mountains (高黎贡山) to the west and the Nujiang River (怒江) to the east, the township enjoys subtropical canyon climate: average temperature 21.6℃, rainfall ~663 mm, described as “Four seasons on one mountain, different weather every few miles.”

    ? Transportation

    • Highways: Liu-Man Highway (六曼二级公路) passes through, linking to Longyang and Nujiang.

    • Public Transport: Daily buses include 24 to Longyang City and 30 to Liuku (六库, capital of Nujiang Prefecture). Daily passenger volume: ~350; freight: 20,000 tons/year.

    ? Ethnic Festivals
