This month offers travelers the perfect conditions for outdoor exploration, as the landscape continues to be lush and vibrant from the spring rains.     Humidity & Wind: Moderate humidity (~70%) with a gentle southern breeze around 12 km/h.
    What to Wear: Light T-shirts during the day, a light jacket for mornings and evenings, and a foldable umbrella is recommended.

    May-Only Local Festival

    Luoping Multicultural Folk Song & Flower Festival (罗平多民族山歌花节) – Typically held on the first weekend of May.

    Ethnic groups such as the Zhuang (壮族), Buyi (布依族), and Miao (苗族) gather at Jiulong Waterfall Park (九龙瀑布公园) to perform antiphonal singing, bamboo dancing, and dragon-boat drumming.
    Colorful markets offer wildflower honey and hand-embroidered pouches—great as souvenirs.

    Top May Attractions

    Jiulong Waterfalls (九龙瀑布)

    Roaring cascades surrounded by newly green karst peaks. The upgraded boardwalk offers misty views and frequent rainbows.

    Duoyi River Bamboo Village (多依河竹楼村)

    Ride a bamboo raft down the jade-green river and enjoy river-fish hotpot in traditional stilt houses.

    Luoping Karst Peak Forest – Jinji Peak Cluster (罗平喀斯特峰林 – 金鸡峰丛)

    Although the golden rapeseed flowers have been harvested, green terraces remain between cone-shaped peaks. A perfect location for quiet sunrise photography without the March tourist crowds.

    Lubuge “Small Three Gorges” (鲁布革小三峡)

    May-Only Delicacies

    Rapeseed Flower Dishes (油菜花菜肴) – Try deep-fried rapeseed-bud fritters and the “flower omelette”, made from late-season blossoms.
    Sticky-Rice Bamboo-Tube Rice (竹筒糯米饭) – Steamed with mountain yam and cured pork inside freshly cut green bamboo, served only during the May festival.
    Wild-Mushroom Hotpot (野生菌火锅) – Chanterelles and porcini appear after early May rains, simmered in a light chicken broth.
    “Sanqi” Herbal Chicken (三七炖鸡) – Local free-range chicken stewed with notoginseng roots (三七), said to revitalize hikers in humid weather.

    Quick Tips

    Stay: Choose eco-lodges inside the bamboo village (竹楼村) or boutique inns in Luoping Town (罗平县城)—early booking is essential during the festival weekend.
    Transport: Take the high-speed rail to Luoping Station (罗平站), then a 20-minute taxi to the falls. Scooters are available for rent to explore the Karst Peak Forest Loop (峰林环线).
