2014 Ludian earthquake struck Ludian County, Yunnan, China, with a moment magnitude of 6.1 on 3 August. The earthquake killed at least 617 people, injuring at least 2,400 others.[17][18] As of 5 August 2014, 112 people remain missing.[19] Over 12,000 houses collapsed and 30,000 were damaged.[20] According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred 29 km (18 mi) WSW of Zhaotong city at 16:03 local time (08:03 UTC).
The Ludian earthquake occurred at 16:03, Beijing time (08:03 UTC), on 3 August 2014. American geological surveys indicated that the epicenter was 29 km (18 mi) WSW of Zhaotong city at a depth of 10.0 km (6.2 mi),[25] in the quake-prone province of Yunnan in southwestern China, about 18 km (11 mi) from Zhaotong. It was especially felt in the province of Yunnan, and less in the provinces of Guizhou and Sichuan.[26]
The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.1 on the moment magnitude scale,[16] with an intensity of up to VII (Very strong) on the Mercalli intensity scale. The quake was the result of a strike-slip fault, whose fault plane has a southwest-northeast strike.[27]
Seismicity in this region of southeast Asia is the direct result of the orogenic activity of the Himalayan mountain belt. Due to the complex interaction between the Eurasian Plate and Indo-Australian Plate from Afghanistan in the west to Burma and China in the east, many shallow sub-surface faults are present in both southwest China and neighbouring Myanmar.
This particular part of Yunnan Province was struck by the Mw 6.3 Burma earthquake in 2003.[28] Similar events have occurred in recent years due to strike-slip faulting in the nearby vicinity, such as the 2006 Yunnan earthquake of magnitude 5.0, which killed 19 people,[29] the largest of recent times, the Mw 7.9 2008 Sichuan earthquake, which killed over 69,000 people, the Mw 6.9 2011 Shan earthquake,[30] and more recently, the 2012 Yunnan earthquakes, which was the result of reverse faulting and not strike-slip faulting like the Ludian earthquake,[31] killing 81 people and injuring 821 others.[32]

Approximately 10 kilometers to the east of Ludian County is Tuogu Village of Taoyuan Muslim Township. Within the village is the Tuogu Mosque which has a history of 234 years. Tuogu is Yunnan province’s relatively large Hui ethnic community, which is a Hui autonomous township in Zhaotong Municipality. Founded in the Qing Dynasty in 1730 A.D., it was surrounded by shady trees, fields, and hills and boasted a history of more than 260 years.
Built in Yongzheng Period (1722-1735) of Qing Dynasty, Tuogu Mosque is one of the five ancient temples and one of the ten mosques in Yunnan Province. According to records inscribed on steles in the mosque, in 1730, Ma Lincan and Ma Linzhi led the fundraising effort to construct the Main Hall used for religious services. Since then, the complex has undergone several renovations. With a long history, it was known as the “ancestral temple” in Yunnan province. It is a Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the Provincial Level. The mosque remained undamaged from the magnitude 6.1 earthquake which struck Ludian County on 3rd August 2014.
Covering a total area of about 4,000 square meters, Tuogu mosque is laid out in a typical Chinese garden style. It is composed of more than 30 pavilions, rooms and four courtyards, such as the Main Hall, Huanxing Pavilion, Back Hall, and wing rooms. The Main Hall is 13 meters high, 18 meters long, 15 meters wide, and is supported by 36 pillars. It can hold up to 300 people praying at the same time. The Huanxing Pavilion(唤醒楼) is exquisite and well constructed, and has become the most eye-catching part of the mosque. “Huan Xing” means “to call for the neighboring Muslims for religious service”.
With a unique style of architecture, the Tuogu Mosque is a first-class mosque in Yunnan province, second to none among the 100 mosques in Zhaotong. It amazed people with its building techniques and scientific and reasonable structure. However, the mosque has no nails, no wedges and no buckles. Surprisingly, it’s remained intact after several earthquakes.
Tuogu Mosque plays a vital role in preserving and promoting Islamic traditions and cultural heritage in Ludian County. It serves as a center for religious education, Quranic studies, and cultural exchange among the local Muslim population.
The mosque hosts various educational programs, including Arabic language classes, Quranic recitation sessions, and lectures on Islamic history and ethics. These activities contribute to the intellectual and spiritual growth of the community.
Throughout the year, Tuogu Mosque organizes religious festivals, communal prayers, and social events that strengthen communal bonds and foster unity among Muslims in Ludian County. These events also provide opportunities for cultural exchange with visitors and non-Muslim residents.
For Muslim travelers planning to visit Tuogu Mosque:
Tuogu Mosque is accessible from Ludian County and nearby areas by public transportation, taxis, or private vehicles. It is advisable to plan the visit in advance, considering local transport schedules and routes.
Tuogu Mosque stands as a cultural and spiritual landmark in Ludian County, inviting visitors to experience the rich heritage of Islam in Yunnan Province.
With a total length of 101 kilometers, Niulanjiang River in northeastern Yunnan Province is a large tributary of the Jinsha River in the upper reaches of the Yangtze river, originating from Jjialize(嘉丽泽), Songming county(嵩明县), Kunming city of Yunnan province. It is a river that crosses the Yunnan-Guizhou provinces, which enters Ludian county from a place in Jiangdi village(江底村), called “Laoxiongdong(老熊垌)”. The river acts as a demar- cation line for Ludian and Huize Counties.
Niulanjiang river gorge is high with deep valley; the river flow twists and turns with ravines and gullies criss-cross on both sides. The river beach is broad with slow flows at the gentle place and the river is narrow with turbulent waters at the steep. The average height difference between the mountains on the river bank is nearly 2000 meters, with obvious three-dimensional climate. The gorge has a very peculiar topographical features. The coastal mountains are overlapped in three levels: steep slope at the bottom one, vertical cliff in the middle and the raked mountains at the top. So the gorge forms a spectacle scenery of v-shaped valley bottom, squared middle and upside down Chineses character “八” top. Some scholars called it “the most magical canyon of the east”. At the river gorge, 6 ascade hydroelectric stations stand there, making the gorge more grandeur and poetic.
Located in the confluence of the new and old city center of Ludian county, Shushi Culture Square, built in October 2003, integrates the functions of culture, sports, leisure, entertainment, conference and assembly. The square covers a total area of nearly 50,000 square meters, of which the hardening area nearly 20,000 square meters, the green area nearly 16,000 square meters, the water area nearly 7,000 square meters, and the building of 6,000 square meters. It’s integrated with the pedestrian street, century avenue, the ancient town of Shushi, and the archaize street.
Islamic Town, 5 km from Ludian county seat of Zhaotong City, was opened on 16 April, attracting numerous visitors. It features Islamic architecture and Chinese gardening, while highlighting the Hui ethnic culture; and it is one of the characteristic tourist sites in northeast Yunnan. Covering an area of 334 mu, Islamic Town combines the unique natural environment with the culture of Hui ethnic people. “one axis and five area” is the overall layout of the Islamic Town. The central axis length is 1000 meters. Except for the square at the entrance, there are religious culture exhibition area, demonstration area, waterplay areas and shopping area in north-south distribution.
Islam is the second largest religion in the world after Christianity, with about 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide. Muslims worship one, all-knowing God, who in Arabic is known as Allah. Followers of Islam aim to live a life of complete submission to Allah. They believe that nothing can happen without Allah’s permission, but humans have free will. By Friday, believers go to the mosque for worship, and everyone must take a bath before the worship.
Eid al-Fitr, known as the Festival of Fast-Breaking, is one of the most important religious holidays celebrated by the Hui ethnic minority in China, who are predominantly Muslim. This festival marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, and is a time of joy, gratitude, and community.
The Hui ethnic minority is known for its unique blend of Chinese and Islamic cultures. They primarily follow the teachings of Islam, which was brought to China via trade routes many centuries ago. As a result, their festivals, including Eid al-Fitr, carry elements of both their Islamic faith and Chinese cultural practices.
Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the first day of Shawwal, the month that follows Ramadan in the Islamic lunar calendar. The date varies each year based on lunar sightings.
The festivities of Eid al-Fitr among the Hui typically involve several key components:
Eid al-Fitr is not only a religious observance but also a significant cultural event for the Hui minority. It promotes values such as charity, community support, and gratitude. Moreover, the festival serves as an opportunity for Hui Muslims to express their faith openly and connect with their cultural identity while living within a predominantly non-Muslim society.
In summary, Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of Fast-Breaking) is a vibrant and meaningful celebration for the Hui ethnic minority in China, marked by prayers, feasting, and community interaction. It embodies both their Islamic faith and their unique cultural traditions, making it a vital part of their identity.
