Chinese Name: 昆明滇池国际城市湿地公园
English Name: Dianchi International City Wetland Park in Kunming
Area: 2360.11 km²
Climate: Subtropical plateau monsoon climate
Vegetation Type: Evergreen broadleaf forest
Kunming Dianchi International Urban Wetland Park is situated on Haidong Road in the Guandu District of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, adjacent to the Baoxiang River. The park spans 2,360.11 acres, which includes 300 acres designated for water quality purification, 950.11 acres for recreational activities, and 1,110 acres for ecological conservation. This area is integral to the development of lakeside ecological belts and plays a vital role in the lake’s ecosystem.
The Guandu District Committee and District Government aim to develop Kunming Dianchi International Urban Wetland Park into a national-level park. The park will adhere to the principle of “combining protection and development,” striving to achieve “the best landscape and the best ecology” while maximizing both the ecological service functions and socio-economic value of the wetlands.
The park’s construction will follow a “government-led, market-operated” approach, encouraging active participation from various sectors of society. It will focus on wetland restoration, utilize environmental education as a key component, and offer leisure and vacation opportunities. The goal is to create a harmonious integration of ecological, production, and living functions within the wetlands.
Upon completion, Kunming Dianchi International Urban Wetland Park will become the region around Dianchi Lake with the highest biodiversity and the most effective area for self-purification of the lake. It will serve as the last line of defense against pollutants entering Dianchi Lake, creating an ecological protection barrier along the lake’s banks that can adapt to and mitigate the impact of human activities on the natural environment. Additionally, the park will offer environmental education and raise public awareness through a range of diverse and engaging science outreach activities, establishing itself as a key base for wetland science education.
Furthermore, the park will integrate with the surrounding systems and landscapes, balancing scenic beauty with economic value along the lakeside. The development of the lakeside area will increase the land value, promote regional economic growth through environmental enhancements, and establish a strong foundation for the sustainable development of the Kunming Ecological Circle around Dianchi Lake, creating favorable conditions for the future.
In the future development of New Kunming, wetland parks will be constructed along the lakeside roads. The Kunming City Government has already relocated its offices to Chenggong New City, which will expedite the construction of the Dianchi Wetland Park.
Dream Park in Xishan District, Kunming
Chinese Name: 昆明金碧公园
English Name: Jinbi Square Park in Kunming
Opening hours: Year-round, Monday to Sunday, 00:00 – 24:00
Jinbi Park, established in the early years of the Republic of China, is the oldest park in old Kunming. Located at what is now the First People’s Hospital of Yunnan Province on Jinbi Road, the park was named after the nearby Jinma Biji Square. At the time, it was the only park in the area and was simply referred to as “the park.”

Window on China Theme Park also named The Kingdom of the Little People (Chinese: 小人国主题乐园) is a theme park located near Kunming, Yunnan that features comic performances by people with dwarfism. Supporters of the park claim that it provides employment to people who would otherwise be unable to find work, but it has been criticized for treating dwarfism as a humorous condition.
As of 2010, there were over 100 employees whose ages ranged from 19 to 48. The park requires employees to be less than 51 inches (130 cm) tall. The employees live in nearby dormitories which were specifically constructed to be accessible to short people. During the performances, the actors pretend to live in small mushroom shaped houses.
The park was founded in September 2009 by Chen Mingjing, a wealthy real estate investor, as part of a complex he owns near Dian Lake in the western suburbs of Kunming that also includes the World Butterfly Ecological Park (世界蝴蝶生态园). Although many visitors to the park are students from nearby towns, Chen hopes to make the park a destination for tourists visiting China. He provides English lessons for his employees to help them interact with foreign tourists. He aims to eventually employ 1,000 people with dwarfism.
The performers sing, dance, and perform onstage for visiting tourists. They often act out Qigong, scenes from fairy tales, or ballets such as Swan Lake. They also occasionally perform hip-hop dances. The performances often feature a “Dwarf King”. The king, who is only 1 metre (3.3 ft) tall, often wears a gold silk cape and rides a three-wheeled motorcycle during performances.
The park has been criticized by several organizations, including the Little People of America and Handicap International. Critics contend that the park resembles a human zoo and isolates the handicapped from the rest of society. Chen claims that the business provides employment for many who would otherwise be unemployed, allowing them to build self-respect. Many employees have said that they enjoy living with other short people and feel less lonely at the park. They say that before they were employed by Chen they were unable to find work or were exploited by employers. The American television channel, Vice, started partly by director Spike Jonze, filmed a piece for their show, Vice Essentials, at the Kingdom of the Little People in 2015. In their short documentary they interviewed some of the staff and were taken on a tour of the park, including the dorms and behind the scenes places that visitors aren’t normally privy to.
The Lollipop Guild and the rest of Munchkin Land. Snow White’s seven caretakers. Willy Wonka’s Oompa-Loompas. All have two things in common: little people (colloquially, “dwarves”) and utter fiction. But dwarfism exists, and people with dwarfism need jobs. Combine that with a serious problem of discrimination against little people, and you could have a problem on your hands. For China, the controversial solution is the “Kingdom of the Little People.”
Located near the city of Kunming, the capital of the Chinese province of Yunnan, the Kingdom of the Little People is intended to be a tourist attraction — a theme park, of sorts, where everyone (except the visitors) is short. In order to work at the Kingdom, one must be no taller than 4’3″ tall, eliminating some of the ‘taller” people with dwarfism. As of early 2010, the park employed 100 such people and its owner aims to employ 1,000 total, according to Reuters. Those people hired by the Kingdom are offered housing in a dormitory-like environment customized for people of their short stature, and most are given a role as a performer inside the Kingdom.
Tourists pay a hefty sum for the honor of visiting — tickets cost about $10 (in yuan equivalent), an enormous amount given that per capita GDP in China is only about $5,000. The show they receive? The performers pretend to live in mushroom-like huts and act as if they’re members of a fiefdom lost in a Vaudevillian nightmare. Performers of short stature don tutus and put on a tongue-in-cheek version of Swan Lake. “Shaolin monks” put on a faux combat performance. A contingent of guardsmen march around the grounds, acting (as part of the motif) while doubling as crowd control. And ruling this whole kingdom — at least, in the context of the show — is a 3’3″ emperor, draped in a gold tunic and protected by bodyguards, as seen above.

1 Day the Kingdom of the Little People and the World Butterfly Ecological Park Tour in Kunming
Please respect dwarfs work here.
Black Dragon Pool Park or known as Hei Long Tan Park, is located at the foot of Longquan Hill, about 17 kilometers (10 miles) north of the center of Kunming. In this park, the most famous site is the Black Dragon Pool, which has an area of 600 square meters. The pool is divided into two parts by a bridge, and although the water is connected, the water at two sides has different colors and it is clear at one side but turbid at the other side. The fish in either side never swim to the opposite part of the pool. How strange! Moreover, for hundreds of years, this wondrous pool has never dried up, even in drought years.
An ancient legend lends the Black Dragon Pool its name; it is said that a long time ago there were ten wicked dragons that caused much destruction and did great harm to people. One day, one of the Eight Immortals of the Chinese legend ‘Lu Dongbin’ subdued nine of the dragons and jailed them in a tower. Only the youngest black dragon was left, charging with protecting and benefiting the people as the price of its freedom. This dragon is believed living in the pool till today. The pool is divided into two parts by a bridge, and although the water is connected, the two sides are different colors and the fish in either side never swim to the opposite part of the pool. Moreover, for hundreds of years, this wondrous pool has never dried up, even in drought years.
Near the Black Dragon Pool is the Black Dragon Palace, which was built in 1394, in the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), and rebuilt in 1454, in the reign of Emperor Jingtai of the Ming Dynasty. The whole palace consists of three halls and two courtyards, and the main hall features a stone plaque written by the governor of Yunnan in the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911) to praise the views here. The Black Dragon Palace is also called the Lower Temple, because when you walk along the stone steps, you come directly to the Upper Temple – the Dragon Fountain Temple – which is hidden among ancient trees. This 570-year-old temple includes Thunder Deity Hall, North Pole Hall, Sanqing Hall, Jade Emperor Hall and some other halls in which the deities of Taoism are worshiped. The Dragon Fountain Temple is the largest Taoist temple in southern China.
In front of the temple there are three huge and ancient trees: the Tang Dynastic Plum, the Song Dynastic Cypress and the Ming Dynastic Camellia. The main branch of the plum has already died of old age, but the remaining branches growing out sideways are still full of vital force and vigor. The 25-meter-high (82 feet) cypress has a very thick trunk – so thick that it takes four or five adults with linked arms to encircle it. The camellia is a prodigious tree which blossoms every year and always precedes the other camellias.
The Pavilion of Stele keeps many rare steles, tablets and plaques. The most famous is a tablet engraved with four Chinese characters – ‘Wan Wu Zi Sheng’ – which means that all things in the world are propagating and developing, flourishing and animated. The inscription was written by a famous Taoist of the Ming Dynasty named Liu Yuanran whose handwriting is vigorous and lively. The four characters are written in one continuous stroke and look convex but feel concave to the touch, owing to the unusual way they reflect light.
The Ming Dynasty was overthrown by the Qing Dynasty in Chinese history, and the potentates of the Qing were all from a minority ethnic group called ‘Manchu’. When the Manchu marched into the Chinese mainland and became the rulers, many people killed themselves to show their loyalty to the Ming Dynasty, including a scholar named Xue Erwang and his whole family. They drowned themselves, and the tomb of these loyalists is located beside the Black Dragon Pool.
In fact, centered by the Black Dragon Pool, there are also many attractions in this park, including Longquan Upper Taoist Temple and Lower Taoist Temple, Plum Garden, Azalea Valley, Red Maple forest, etc.. The Black Dragon Pool is only one of highlights of the park. There is a very cool stream running throughout the park and you can follow it up through bonsai gardens, different plantations and different types of trees.
The Dragon Fountain Temple is the largest Taoist temple in southern China. This temple was originally built in 1394 during the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty and later rebuilt in 1454 during the reign of Emperor Jingtai of the Ming Dynasty, so it has a hundreds-years-old history. The whole palace consists of three halls and two courtyards, including Thunder Deity Hall, North Pole Hall, Sanqing Hall, Jade Emperor Hall and some other halls in which the Dragon King (the God of Rain in Chinese mythology) and other deities of Taoism are worshiped.

Jiaoye Park昆明郊野公园, also known as Countryside Park, is one of the largest parks in the suburban area of Kunming (昆明), with a total area of 180 hectares and a sightseeing area of 62.5 hectares. The park is renowned for its picturesque landscapes, especially during spring when the hills are blanketed with blooming flowers like camellias, pear blossoms, wild cherries, apricots, and many other unnamed flowers, both herbaceous and woody, creating a stunningly beautiful spring scene.
The vibrant peach blossom is the symbol of the park. Over the past ten years, more than 5,000 peach trees have been planted along the 2-kilometer roadsides by the park staff. After the Chinese New Year, the peach buds begin to swell, and by March, countless flower buds bloom together, revealing a spectacular “sea of peach blossoms.” These peach flowers come in red and white, with white petals showing red accents. Some trees even bear blossoms of two different colors on one tree, and within a single flower, two shades may appear. This unique phenomenon is known as “Er Jiao” (二娇), which fascinates visitors.
Jiaoye Park is located at the foot of Yunan Mountain (玉案山), west of Kunming, and backed by Qipan Mountain (棋盘山). It is also adjacent to Qiongzhu Temple (筇竹寺) to the west. The park allows visitors to bring pets and even offers self-service barbecue areas, making it an ideal destination for outdoor leisure activities.
Since its opening in 1990, Jiaoye Park has attracted millions of visitors. It has become a popular destination for those seeking outdoor activities and nature exploration. With its vast sightseeing area, the park blends the natural charm of rural landscapes with the best features of urban parks. Within the park, visitors can enjoy the plum blossoms found in Heilongtan (黑龙潭), the camellias of Jindian (金殿), the magnolias of Xishan (西山), and the cherry blossoms of Yuantong Mountain (圆通山), all in one place.
The primary attraction of Jiaoye Park is its stunning natural beauty. In early March, the hills are filled with camellias, pear blossoms, wild cherries, apricot blossoms, and many other vibrant flowers. These blossoms create a breathtakingly beautiful spring scene, attracting visitors from all over. The park’s peach blossoms are particularly famous, featuring rows of peach trees with flowers in both red and white hues, forming a stunning natural spectacle.
One of the park’s most curious features is a peach tree with blossoms of two different colors on the same tree. In fact, some individual flowers even exhibit two shades of color, earning them the unique name “Er Jiao” (二娇).

Zhuantang Park (昆明篆塘公园) covers an area of approximately ten acres and is situated at the intersection of Xichang Road (西昌路) and Daguan Road (大观路) in Kunming (昆明市). Originally a parking lot for the Kunming Public Bus Company, the site was transformed into a park in 1987. In July 2002, the Kunming Municipal Government invested 800,000 yuan to renovate the park over an eight-month period.
After the renovation, Zhuantang Park removed its surrounding walls and all buildings facing the street, introducing new greenery and creating a tranquil oasis amidst the bustling city. The park is free to enter and has become a popular recreational space for the general public, especially for middle-aged and elderly citizens. It serves as a hub for activities such as lantern singing (唱花灯) and mountain song (山歌) performances.
Since the majority of modern families are now single-child households, traditional methods of elder care have become less suitable for contemporary society. Zhuantang Park provides activity spaces for elderly individuals, enhancing their quality of life.
In the mornings, many elderly people can be seen exercising in the park. The facilities are comprehensive and the environment is clean, making it a favored spot for both the elderly and children.
The park offers various activities such as playing cards (打牌) and chess (下棋), enriching the lives of senior citizens.
For people working in modern high-rise buildings, there is a strong desire to return to nature. The tranquility, leisure, and vibrancy of the natural world are invaluable to urban dwellers. The construction of Zhuantang Park meets this need for a return to an ecological paradise, providing a suitable public space for citizens to relax and relieve stress.
Urban residents can be seen walking, playing games, or lounging in the park, where they enjoy the beauty and ease of urban life. The park has become an important part of enhancing urban civilization, environment, and image.
