Birth and Family:
Dai Baolian (代宝莲), female, Han ethnicity, was born in 1919 in Baiwuhe Village (白五合村), Matang Town (马塘镇), Wenshan City (文山市), Yunnan Province (云南省). She later married into Dazhai Village (大寨), Leshichong Township (乐诗冲乡). After her husband’s death, she remarried into a Li family in 1952 and had two sons and two daughters.
Skill Inheritance:
From a young age, Dai Baolian learned sewing and embroidery from her mother. She became highly skilled in creating traditional handmade crafts such as baby carriers, aprons, pillowcases, fabric sachets, children’s shoes, and hats.
Fabric Craftsmanship:
Her fabric creations often feature monkeys as the central motif, symbolizing the saying “monkeys picking beans drive away measles,” which conveys a wish for children’s health and protection against evil spirits.

She is a renowned master of panchui (盘绣) and kouhua (扣花, coiling embroidery) in the local area. Originally from Zhedi Village (者底村), Pingba Township (平坝乡), Wenshan City (文山县), she later married into Leshichong Village (乐诗冲村) and had two sons and two daughters.
Chen Shizhen received four years of formal education in her childhood, enabling her to read books and newspapers. Her embroidery, pattern design, and related skills were self-taught, primarily learning from her second aunt and by observing others. Driven by the necessities of life, she gradually mastered these crafts.
Chen Shizhen is a versatile artisan, skilled in both embroidery and pattern drawing. Her main works include embroidered baby carriers, waistbands, apron flaps, and embroidered shoes. Among them, her signature creations are baby carriers made with the kouhua (扣花) technique.
Her kouhua method involves using two needles: one primary needle and another that wraps the thread around the main one, then secures it in place. This intricate coiling embroidery, known locally as kouhua (扣花), is highly time-consuming, with a single baby carrier taking about one month to complete.
Chen Shizhen is not only excellent at needlework but is also adept at various rural tasks, making her a respected figure in the community. Her craftsmanship and works have earned great renown locally, significantly contributing to the inheritance and development of Zhuang (壮族) embroidery culture.

Quan Wankui (全万魁) is a Zhuang ethnic group (壮族) woodcarving artist from Nawei Village (纳尾村), Bangchang Village Office (蚌常村公所), Pingzhai Township (平寨乡), Qiubei County (丘北县), Wenshan Prefecture (文山州), Yunnan Province (云南省). He is a provincial-level inheritor of intangible cultural heritage, specializing in traditional furniture carving techniques using golden-thread betel wood (金丝黄榔木).
Quan Wankui’s (全万魁) carving skills mainly originate from studying the works of the late woodcarving artist Wang Xiaomao (王小貌) from the same village. Wang Xiaomao was highly skilled but passed away without taking on apprentices, leaving behind only a golden-thread betel wood (金丝黄榔木) ancestral altar.
