Xiaobai Forest Park in Yiliang County, Kunming
🌲 History, Decline & Current State
The Golden Era (1990s–1999)
Once known as the “Green Emerald of Kunming’s Suburbs” (昆明近郊的绿翡翠), Xiaobailong Forest Park (小白龙森林公园) earned national-level forest park status in 1999. Over 30 domestic and international investors helped build over 600 ethnic-style villas inspired by China’s 56 ethnic groups, along with forest ballrooms, swimming pools, and tennis courts. Paired with Yangzonghai Lake (阳宗海), it was celebrated as “The Pearl and the Emerald of the Plateau.”
Decline & Abandonment (2013–Present)
In May 2013, a sudden wildfire fueled by resin-rich pines and alders severely damaged the park. Though the fire was extinguished, operations never resumed. Today, villas are swallowed by vines, swimming pools stand dry, and corridors have collapsed, leaving only a few caretakers. Some locals now call it “Kunming’s Silent Hill.”
🌳 Natural Environment & Scenic Features
Forest Resources
The park contains vast evergreen forests dominated by Yunnan pines and Huashan pines, interspersed with oaks, rhododendrons, and bayberry trees. In summer and autumn, visitors could once forage for wild mushrooms and bayberries.
Topography & Climate
Situated at 1,600–2,200 meters above sea level, the park enjoys a mild subtropical highland climate—warm in winter, cool in summer, and comfortable year-round.
⚠️ Visiting Value & Safety Tips

Travel in Groups: The park is sparsely populated, so be aware of possible wildlife encounters or other risks.
-
Bring Supplies: No shops or facilities are available—pack water, food, insect repellent, and first aid. Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes.

💎 Conclusion: The Forgotten Emerald
From a bustling national forest park to an abandoned “Silent Hill,” Xiaobailong has witnessed the fragility of tourism development. Though its glory days are gone, the blend of quiet forests and haunting ruins still draws explorers, photographers, and nostalgia seekers.
