Biyun Temple (碧云寺) is located on Biyun Mountain (碧云山) behind Mingxing Village (明星村), Jiangcheng Town (江城镇), Jiangchuan District (江川区), Yuxi City (玉溪市), Yunnan Province (云南省). It lies about 30 kilometers north of the urban center of Jiangchuan, facing Fuxian Lake (抚仙湖). To the left is Qinglong Mountain (青龙山), and to the right is Baihu Ridge (白虎岭), making for a picturesque setting surrounded by natural beauty.
History and Culture
Also known as “Wudang Branch Temple” (武当别院), Biyun Temple (碧云寺) is said to have been built in the mid-Ming Dynasty by a disciple from Wudang Mountain (武当山) in Jun County (均县), Hubei Province (湖北省). Historical records indicate the temple was established during the Qing Qianlong period. The main gate stands on eight pillars, and the temple complex originally had over 30 structures, including the Patriarch Hall (祖师殿), Guanyin Hall (观音殿), Pig God Hall (猪神殿), Huangjun Hall (黄君殿), Three Emperors Hall (三皇殿), Earth God Hall (土地殿), and Wanghailou Tower (望海楼), among others. The architecture is traditional and elegant, with detailed carvings and well-organized layouts. Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, with only two plaques remaining: “Wudang Branch Temple” (武当别院) and “Bless the People” (庇佑苍生). In 1986, locals raised funds and received support from both inside and outside the county to reconstruct Biyun Temple.
Local Customs
From the second to the third day of the second lunar month, Biyun Temple (碧云寺) hosts a grand temple fair. People from neighboring towns and counties flock to Biyun Mountain (碧云山) to celebrate. Opera troupes from Jiangchuan and neighboring areas such as Chengjiang (澄江), Huaning (华宁), Tonghai (通海), and Jinning (晋宁) gather for performances, turning Mingxing Village (明星村) and Biyun Mountain into a lively festival of people, music, and drums.
