Nanyao Garden (南药园) is located at No. 138 Xuanwei Avenue (宣慰大道), Jinghong City (景洪市), Xishuangbanna Prefecture (西双版纳州), Yunnan Province (云南省). It is a National AA-level tourist attraction under the Yunnan Branch of the Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Established in 1959, it is the only medicinal plant garden in China situated in a tropical rainforest region. The garden integrates species preservation, scientific research, science popularization, educational activities, and tourism.
Functional Areas and Plant Collections
The garden is divided into 12 functional zones, including the Medicinal Culture Plaza, the Southern Medicine Secret Realm, the Dai Medicine Garden, and the Hundred Herb Garden. It houses over 1,500 species of southern medicinal plants, ethnic medicines, and other medicinal plants, such as Amomum villosum (阳春砂仁), Malva nut tree (胖大海), and dragon blood tree (龙血树). It also preserves more than 10,000 medicinal plant specimens and contains the nation’s largest germplasm banks for Malva nut tree (胖大海) and Strychnos (马钱).
Research and Cooperation
In 2022, the Yunnan Provincial Tiandaike Expert Workstation was established here to promote industry-academia-research collaboration. The garden has long been engaged in the introduction, cultivation, and conservation of medicinal plants, as well as in the exploration and utilization of ethnic and folk medicine.
Science Popularization and Tourism
Recognized as a provincial science education base, Nanyao Garden offers activities such as plant rubbing and specimen making, along with themed programs like “Fun Tour in Nanyao Garden” and “Healthy Nanyao Garden.” The garden’s educational approach combines natural science popularization with folk culture experiences. Guided by its medicinal plant research institute, the garden also develops wellness products, creating integrated cultural tourism projects.
