Historical Background

The Hui population in Luxi (沪西) traces its roots back to the early Ming Dynasty. Dazhiyi Village (大直邑村) was a settlement area for the Ma clan from Taoyuan (桃园). During the Hui uprising in Yunnan during the Xianfeng and Tongzhi reigns of the Qing Dynasty, the Hui Muslims of Luxi organized the “Three Camps of Taoju” (桃巨三营) to resist the Qing army and militias. Dazhiyi Village was within the area controlled by the rebel forces, and it is believed that a mosque already existed there at the time. The mosque was rebuilt in the 33rd year of the Guangxu reign (1907), later destroyed again, and reconstructed in 1991.
