Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine plays a significant role in integrating TCM culture with Yunnan’s tourism industry, promoting the development of TCM health tourism and making it a new highlight and growth point for Yunnan’s tourism sector. Below are specific contributions and collaborations:
President Ding Zhongtao (丁中涛) of YUTCM proposed that integrating tourism with TCM health preservation is a practical approach to boosting Yunnan’s tourism development. As a province rich in TCM and ethnic medicine resources, Yunnan can leverage its unique herbal medicine resources and ethnic medical systems to explore the “Ethnic Medicine + Tourism + Health Preservation” model, driving the development of the entire tourism industry chain.
YUTCM collaborates with enterprises to promote TCM health tourism projects. For example, Yunnan Kaixuanli Industrial and Trade Group (云南凯旋利工贸集团) partnered with YUTCM to build the “Hundred Herbs Hall · TCM Town” (百草堂·中医小镇) in Anning Hot Springs (昆明安宁温泉), exploring a TCM-based “medical and health integration” service model. Additionally, the Kunming Xinglin Grand View Garden (昆明杏林大观园) project integrates TCM culture, leisure tourism, science education, and health preservation to create a comprehensive cultural and creative industrial park.
YUTCM actively researches and develops Tibetan medicine cultural tourism. For instance, in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (迪庆藏族自治州), the university combines Tibetan medicine culture with the tourism industry, proposing strategies such as creating integrated health tourism resorts, establishing study-travel models, and launching experiential Tibetan medicine tourism programs. These initiatives enrich tourism offerings and promote the inheritance and development of Tibetan medicine culture.
YUTCM conducts numerous research projects on the integration of ethnic medicine and cultural tourism. For example, Dr. Duan Zhongyu (段忠玉) leads the project “Research on the Integration and Development of Yunnan Ethnic Medicine Culture and Tourism” (云南民族医药文化与旅游融合发展对策研究), aiming to deepen the integration of ethnic medicine and tourism through academic research. The university also explores Lisu ethnic medicine (傈僳族医药) cultural tourism, combining ethnic medicine resources with tourism to create unique cultural tourism products.
YUTCM promotes the interaction between TCM culture and tourism by integrating TCM elements into the six key aspects of tourism: “food, accommodation, transportation, travel, shopping, and entertainment.” This includes developing culturally rich tourism products such as Tibetan medicinal bath kits (藏药浴药包) and Tibetan incense (藏香). At the same time, tourism provides a platform for the dissemination of TCM culture, enhancing its influence through cultural tourism projects.
The Yunnan Provincial Government’s work report emphasizes accelerating the inheritance and innovation of TCM and ethnic medicine, identifying it as a potential driver for improving tourism quality. YUTCM actively responds to these policies by conducting academic research, collaborating on projects, and cultivating talents to promote TCM health tourism.
Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has injected new vitality into Yunnan’s tourism industry through the exploration of the “Ethnic Medicine + Tourism” model, the implementation of TCM health tourism projects, the development of Tibetan medicine cultural tourism, and academic research on ethnic medicine cultural tourism. This integration not only enriches the cultural content of tourism products but also promotes the inheritance and development of TCM culture, making it a new highlight of Yunnan’s tourism industry.

The Guishan area is renowned for its karst topography, characterized by ancient soluble carbonate sedimentary rocks and limestone formations. This results in a landscape dotted with distinctive peaks, caves, and sinkholes. Colorful cloud walls and towering cliffs intermittently appear amidst the forest, with sheer cliffs reaching several tens of meters high.
Guishan boasts a forest coverage of 80%, featuring diverse forest vegetation shaped by the plateau’s subtropical monsoon climate. The primary vegetation includes Yunnan green oak, sandalwood, yellow-haired green oak, and rhododendron. The terrain’s undulating nature creates grassland terraces. In early spring and midsummer, a variety of ferns and flowers, such as clover, colorful grass, Yunnan purple grass, stone oak, and gentian, bloom. The region is home to over 460 plant species, including nationally protected plants like red ash, Yunnan camphor, three-needle fir, beech, magnolia, eucommia, and fan ferns; provincially protected plants such as the small fruit tung tree and split fruit lacquer; and tertiary protected plants like Yunnan sandalwood, tea tree wood, ten-mile flower, and spiny yellow lotus. Additionally, Guishan features the three famous flowers of Yunnan: tea flower, rhododendron, and primrose. Numerous herbal plants, including bird grass, leaf flower, gastrodia, three needles, half summer, lily black plum, gentian, and bellflower, are also found in the area.

General Zhu Jiabi led a people’s army in numerous battles against enemy forces, capturing Shizong and Qiubei, liberating Guangnan, and establishing a revolutionary base in Guishan. This marked the first significant resistance by the people of Yunnan against the Nationalist Government during the liberation war. The general’s monument, located amidst the vibrant Guishan peaks, plays a crucial role in educating future generations about revolutionary history and traditions.
Guishan Temple, also known as Guijing Temple, is situated on the northeast slope of Guishan and was established during the Ming Dynasty. It is a revered Buddhist mountain and pilgrimage site for villagers from the surrounding counties of Luxi, Mile, Shizong, and Luliang. Historical records describe Guishan as a place with dense forests and a perennial pond at the summit, with a temple overlooking the area. Villagers from neighboring counties have contributed funds to restore and build the Mahavira Hall, Caoyan Temple, and Xuantian Pavilion. Annually, around the third day of the third lunar month, thousands of pious Buddhists from local and neighboring counties visit the temple for homage.
Guishan is located in a multicultural region inhabited by Miao, Yi (including Sani, Black Yi, White Yi, Yiqing), and Han ethnic groups. These communities contribute to a rich and diverse cultural landscape, creating a vibrant and colorful cultural tapestry in the Guishan area.

Visitors can drive under the blue sky and white clouds in off-road vehicles, while the landscape includes deep pits left after phosphate mining. From late December to mid-June, the area is designated as a forest fire prevention zone, prohibiting entry. Other times coincide with the rainy season, allowing access through various forest fire checkpoints. A drive from Kunming takes less than an hour to reach Caopu Town (草铺镇) in Anning, where numerous forks lead to routes encircling Heifeng Mountain. Visitors can navigate towards the phosphate mines, Wangjiatan Reservoir (王家滩水库), or access from Liujie Town (六街镇) or Bajie Town (八街镇).
The slopes are adorned with alpine rhododendrons (高山杜鹃花), while off-road motorcycle enthusiasts tackle the Hillary Trail. For outdoor sports enthusiasts, the rugged terrain is ideal for off-road adventures, and hikers favor it as a top choice for long-distance trekking. The roads, mainly constructed as fire access routes, are wide but comprised of mud and stones. Caution is advised, especially after rain, as the roads can be slippery and steep, with deep ditches formed by water runoff posing risks for vehicles.
Heifeng Mountain’s name comes from the lack of sunlight in the valleys. It features rugged terrain with steep elevation differences; the eastern side rises 720 meters, while the western valley, known as Bahe (扒河), has a difference of 1,020 meters, characterized by deeply incised middle mountain landscapes. The mountain is largely covered in small pine forests, with evergreen broadleaf forests and thorny shrubs in the valleys. Over ten valleys, including famous ones like Laoyangqing (老羊箐), Zongdianqing (棕垫箐), and Baiwuqing (柏木箐), are scattered in all directions. Baiwuqing, located on the main peak’s side, is approximately 3 meters wide and 1 kilometer long, allowing passage for off-road vehicles. The water level varies with rainfall, providing a refreshing experience for visitors.
At the summit, one can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, where trees remain lush year-round. A lonely fire lookout tower stands at each peak, offering a perfect spot to take in the beauty, especially during spring when the alpine rhododendrons bloom. Encountering off-road enthusiasts and hikers creates a vibrant scene amidst the swirling mist, with picturesque landscapes featuring blue skies and white clouds.
As the sun sets, the evening glow paints the sky, bringing joy to those who witness it. Watching the sun sink below the horizon evokes a desire to freeze that moment in time. However, each visit feels fleeting as night falls quickly after sunset. Visitors should plan their time wisely and outline their route down. After descending, they can enjoy local delicacies, such as wild mushrooms in Yimen (易门) or local cuisine in Liujie or Bajie towns.
Named due to its profile resembling to a reverse copper basin, the mountain is the origin of the drinking water of the locals. Legend goes that the water at the lowest place of the main peak never dried up because there used to be a golden basin which was then taken away by an avaricious man resulting in the dried-up of the water.
