Yubeng is a secluded small Tibetan village tucked away at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain in Deqin county, the northwestern corner of Yunnan Province. It is only accessible by foot or horse/mule. But the trip, however arduous, is worth it. Yubeng is divided into an upper and a lower section. Both parts offer fabulous views of the Mei Li Snow Mountains. Lower Yubeng is smaller, quieter and closer to the lakes and waterfalls that you will likely visit during your stay.
Feilai temple, the best place to watch goden peaks of Meili mountain at sunrise. So if u plan to watch sunrise, it’s absolutely a good idea to live at Feilai temple the night before. But actually it is unusual to see the goden peaks. The peaks of the mountains are often surrounded with clouds due to the high altitude they are. And this makes more interestings for Meili. There’s a kind of saying that, if any Japanese appears in this area then people can’t see the golden peaks that day. This is because Japanese are not welcomed by Tibetan people. Yes, they hate Japan and Japanese, just like people in notheast of China.
Lancang-Mekong River Grand Canyon
It is called the Lancang River after it reaches Changdu. The Mingyong Glacier derives from Mount Kang Karbo, the main peak of the Meli Snow Mountains. They wind down along the valley, their ice tongues stretching down to the 2,600-meter forest area, just over 800 meters away from the waters of the Langcang River. Mingyong Glacier is the low altitude glacier of the lowest latitude in the world. The whole length of the Mingyong Glacier is about 4 kilometers with the width of 30 meters to 80 meters. Kawagarbo is the high point in a range of high peaks that are generally referred to by Tibetans also as Kawagarpo. Kawagarbo is one of the most sacred peaks in the Tibetan world and is often referred to as Nyainqenkawagarbo to show its sacredness. It is widely recognized as the most beautiful snow mountain in the world, and is honored as the “god of snow mountain”.
It is located on the border between Deqin County, Yunnan, and the counties of Zogang and Zayv of the Tibet Autonomous Region. It rises about 20 kilometres (12 mi) west of Shengping (升平镇), the seat of Deqin County, which lies on China National Highway 214. What is now Deqin County has been part of Yunnan since the 1720s, when the current border with Tibet was established by the early Qing Dynasty.
A mapping error by the Chinese army during the 1950s transcribed the name for a lower range of mountains to the north on a much larger area that also included Kawagarbo. The name of this lower range in Tibetan is Menri, but is most widely known by its Chinese transliteration, Meili Xue Shan or Meili Snow Mountain. This is the name most widely applied to the range by Chinese and Western sources. The Meili range is a small massif of the much more extensive Hengduan Shan, the major north-south trending complex of mountains lying along the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau in eastern Tibet, northwestern Yunnan, western Sichuan, and far northern Myanmar. The Meili Xue Shan forms part of the divide between the Salween (Nujiang) and Mekong (Lancangjiang) rivers.
Kawagarbo is one of the most sacred mountains for Tibetan Buddhism as the spiritual home of a warrior god of the same name. It is visited by 20,000 pilgrims each year from throughout the Tibetan world; many pilgrims circumambulate the peak, an arduous 240 km (150 mi) trek Although it is important throughout Tibetan Buddhism, it is the local Tibetans that are the day-to-day guardians and stewards of Kawagarbo, both the deity and the mountain.
The ancestral religion of the Kawagarpo area, as in much of Tibet, was Bön, a shamanistic tradition based on the concept of a world pervaded by good and evil spirits. Bön encompassed numerous deities and spirits which are still recognized today, and are often connected with specific geographical localities and natural features; the major mountain peaks in the Hengduan Mountains are thus all identified with specific deities. Kawagarbo is one of these. Since its introduction, Tibetan Buddhism has been the dominant religion of the Kawagarbo area, with followers of Gelugpa doctrine being the most common.
Tibetans believe the warrior god will leave them if human sets foot on the peak of Kawakarpo, making the ground unholy. Disasters will follow as they lose god’s protection. Tibetans have also established a centuries-old sacred geography around the peak, maintained by religious leaders from local monasteries in negotiation with local villages. This sacred natural site preserves the natural resources and ecological health of the range.
1987: The first attempt on Kawakarpo was made in 1987 by a party from the Joetsu Alpine Club of Japan.
1990–91: In the winter of 1990–91 a group from the Academic Alpine Club of Kyoto University attempted the peak in conjunction with a Chinese group. Their activity caused heavy protests from the local Tibetan community due to the mountain’s cultural and religious significance. On 3 January 1991, a nighttime avalanche killed all seventeen members of the expedition, in one of the most deadly mountaineering accidents in history. The Kyoto club returned in 1996 to make another unsuccessful attempt.
1988, 1989, 1992, and 1993: American expeditions, led by Nicholas Clinch, visited the range in 1988, 1989, 1992, and 1993, attempting other major peaks, but were unsuccessful.
2001: In 2001, local government passed laws banning all future climbing attempts on cultural and religious grounds. As of 2010, none of the significant peaks of the range have been successfully climbed.
►By plane: Fly directly to Shangri-la city (Zhongdian), and then take a local bus to Feilai Temple in Deqin County, which is the best jumping off point to view Kawa Karpo Peak of Meili Snow Mountain.

It’s divided into two parts: the Upper Yubeng Village and Lower Yubeng Village, about 1 miles between the two parts. From Upper Yubeng, trekkers have access to the Base Camp, and Ice Lake hikes. It has better views of the snowy mountains, more options of guesthouses and more people.

Due to no highway to access Yubeng village, one can only get there by trekking or mule-riding for 18 kilometers from Xidang Village, and crossing over a pass for 3700 meters. Tourists can take buses running Shangri-la to Deqin or rent a car to.
Base Camp and Ice Lake

The path leads towards the snow mountains, and starts off fairly easy, getting progressively steeper as you get to the top. Just before the lake, you may have scramble up some rocks for the last section of the walk, which could be a bit dangerous in winter. To reach the lake, you can scramble down the rocks to reach the bottom.
The best time to visit Yubeng Village is from May to July in late spring and early summer; from September to October in autumn. Flowers bloom from may to July. From September to October, the scenery is charming. Large temperature difference between these two seasons and you’d better bring enough warm clothes when you travel.

► On the way from Xidang to Yubeng Village, you can know how far you have walked by watching the number on the wastebasket. No.45 is the location of first rest stop and No. 21 is the second.
► The most practical local delicacies are buttered tea and instant noodles. Yak butter tea is the best food to supply physical strength and prevent altitude sickness on the plateau.
► Before entering the village, be sure to leave your big luggage at the inn and pack light with your necessities.
►Due to the inconvenience of transportation, the supplies here are more expensive than the outside, so bring some food that can supply physical strength such as dried meat, chocolate and so on.
► It takes a certain amount of physical strength and perseverance, and remember to bring waterproof and warm clothes and waterproof hiking shoes. An alpenstock is very useful.
► Respect the local custom. The sacred lake is so sacred to local Tibetans that they can only drink and cannot be used for washing anything.
► The mobile phone may be out of signal on the way.
Ice Lake is located at the foot of Jiangjun Mountain in Yubeng Village in Meili Snow Mountain, Deqin County, Diqing Prefecture. It’s 7 hours’ trekking from Yubeng Village and 1 hour’s trekking from the Base Camp.

It’s typical moraine lake as a result of glacier movement. One side of the lake is the mountain mountain ridge, another side is the vertical cliff and dangling huge glacier. Climbing up the cliff to the main peak of Kawagebo. Huge glaciers and snows continue to fall off cliffs into glacial lakes and replenish them. Other glaciers spreading to the lakefront are spectacular. A startling interplay of blue sky and white mountain makes the Ice Lake be more like a paradise.

The legend goes like this, the original selected building site for the temple was 2 kilometers away from the present one. All materials had been prepared and piled up on the site. However, the night before the formal construction, main building materials, like pillars and girders were disappeared without any trace. Later, monks found them erecting on the present site in regular; they believed it was arranged by the Buddha, so they changed the site and named the temple as Flying Temple. Today, if you stand in Douwen Village and look across at Feilai Temple, you will notice that the temple does have a tendency to fly.
There is a spring in the front of the pool in Feilai Temple. It’s said that the water has the effect of retaining youthful looks and keeping longevity for most abbots of the temple lived long. So tourists coming here all rush to drink the spring water and also take some bottles for their family.

Covering 1500 square meters, it was built according to the mountain terrain with architecture at random discretion. It has an advantage of a commanding position overlooking the mountain and the village.
This is the place for Tibetans to pay homage to the sacred mountains and it is said that circumambulators must get the key in Qidengge. Circumambulators who are in inside circumambulation must get the key for the Yongzongbajiu Temple on the bank of the Lancang River as well as the the key in Qidengge. In recent years, various Buddhist activities have been held at the Wulongding Culture Square and Feilai Temple. It is a holy land for vacations, weariness relief, meditation and soul cultivation.
The whole temple is consists of Zisun (Descendants) Hall, the Hall of God, Haichao (Sea Tide Hall), Liangxiang (Wing-rooms) Hall, Liang’er (Two Ears) Hall, and Sipei (Side) Hall, which has the characteristics of three religions- Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. The buildings are distinctively scattered, with halls and houses echoing with one another.
The most impressive feature lies in the sculpture art of the main construction of Feilai Temple – Haichao Hall. The construction structure of the hall is of a single eave hanging on the top and seven pieces of wood supporting the beam. With a horizontal distance of 3 Jian, the beam is of a clear and regular structure. It is made of a large round piece of wood.
With simple head, the peripheral columns are standing on the Sumeru Throne. Waist engraved with characters, flowers and other embossed designs, beautiful, unique wood carvings under the eave, numerous partition doors in front of the hall and windows with exquisite patterns and experienced craftsmanship.
Base on its terrain, the main hall of Feilai Temple is hewed into a flat and forms a firm and splendid mountain wall. The main sculpture of the hall – the Sculpture of the Haichao Dragon King Sending His Daughter to get Married was carved out of the mountain and rocks. On the left of the sculpture are the Eighteen Arhats with various expressions and gestures, and the characters of the Pilgrimage to the West on the right.
By scheduled bus: Tourists can take a scheduled bus from Deqin County to Mingyong Village and get off at Feilai Temple.

The best time to visit Feilai temple is winter and spring time from January to May. While from October to December is the best time to shoot the golden sunrise of Meli Snow Mountain.
As the temple is located right beside roadside of Yunan-Tibet Highway, it is also the best place to see the sun rising over snow covered Meili snow mountains. More and more tourists come here to view and take photos. Therefore, hotels and inns of different standards and types come out with wide price ranges to meet the needs of all kinds of tourists.
Lancang-Mekong River Grand Canyon
It is called the Lancang River after it reaches Changdu. The river runs south until it leaves China at the Nanla Bayout of Yunnan Province and therefrom changes its name from the Lancang River to the Mekong River. The river finally empties into the Pacific Ocean in the south of Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam.
Meili Snow Mountain is one of the most sacred mountains of Tibetan Buddhism. In the 1930s, they were praised by American scholars as the most beautiful mountains in the world. Meili Snow Mountain boasts numerous snow-clad ridges and peaks, thirteen of which are more than 6,000 meters above the sea level. The highest peak Kawagebo, which rises to 6,740 metres, has never been summited.
► Bring enough cash with you for there is no bank and post office around Feilai Temple.
► Tourists can see the sunrise of Meili Snow Mountain from Feilaisi observation deck rather than Feilai Temple.
► The sunrise time at the Feilai Temple is at about 6 am around the summer solstice, and at about 8 am around the winter solstice.
► Only between the lunar mid-July and September can tourists have the opportunity of shooting the scenery of the moon hanging over the Meri Snow Mountain at sunrise.
► If you plan to take the photos of sunrise, know the sunrise time in advance, and keep warm.

Yubeng Village is known for the beautiful valley it lies in and beautiful day treks which depart from it. Under the extraordinary craftsman by nature, Yubeng village is called the miniature version of the real Shangri-La.
It’s divided into two parts: the Upper Yubeng Village and Lower Yubeng Village, about 1 miles between the two parts. From Upper Yubeng, trekkers have access to the Base Camp, and Ice Lake hikes. From Lower Yubeng, you can find the paths to the Sacred Waterfall, and if you are a hardcore hiker, Holy Lake, which from a higher vantage point, has an unobstructed view of the Kawa Karpo Peak (6,740 meters), and most of the rest of the mountain range.
Yubeng is a Village in Northwestern Yunnan, situated at the foot of the Wuzi Mountain Peak of Niancimu Mountain Peak on Meili Snow Mountain, Yunling Country, Deqin County. One can only get there by trekking or mule-riding for 18 kilometers, and crossing over a pass of 3700 m.
Legend has it that for centuries Yubeng Village was unknown to the outside world. One day, an old man arrived in Xidang Village near Lancang River (the Mekong River) and tried to buy highland barley from the villagers there. No one knew where he came from, so some of the villagers followed him when he left, but on the way over the mountain the old man disappeared.
Later, the old man came back to Xidang to buy food again. The villagers objected and told him “we aren’t going to sell you barley or wheat, but just some millet.” When they loaded the food for the old man, one of the villagers made small holes on the bags. After he started his journey back home, the old man was followed again. He didn’t realize that the holes in the bags had spilled the millet along the way. However, when he reached a huge rock, he disappeared. So the villagers pried up the rock and Yubeng Village was discovered.
Due to no highway to access Yubeng village, one can only get there by trekking or mule-riding for 18 kilometers from Xidang Village, and crossing over a pass for 3700 meters.
How to Get Xidang Village?
By Bus
There are four buses from Shangri-la to Deqin every day and one bus from Deqin to Xidang.
By Car-rental
Tourists can rent a car from Deqin to Xidang Village. Remember to discuss the price with the driver and confirm the destination and route in advance to reduce unnecessary trouble.
Sacred Waterfall
Apparently best seen in the morning to catch rainbows. 4-5 hour hike. The path starts by crossing lower Yubeng, and turning right near the stupa. There are green trash cans along the path. There is a tea shop about 2/3 of the way to the waterfall. In the summer, the tea shops also provide basic lodgings and bedding if you want to stay overnight in the mountains.
Holy Lake
A high mountain lake south of Yubeng. 10 hour hike. Begin in Lower Yubeng, crossing the bridge to the left of the stupa and then taking an immediate right up a steep trail through a wooded mountainside. This part of the hike is slippery in parts and could be difficult in wet weather. After around 3 hours the trail contours round a slope into a meadow at 4300 m which has a partial shelter. This is followed by a relatively shallow ascent over rocky (and snowy) ground to the lake. Once at the lake it’s possible to go a little further towards the peak.
Base Camp and Ice Lake
From Upper Yubeng to Base Camp take about 3 hours. From the base camp to the lake is about another hour.
Route 1. Xidang Reshuitang(西当热水塘) – Nanzongla Yakou (南宗拉垭口) – Upper Yubeng Village – Lower Yubeng Village, then backtrack. This is the traditional way for most hikers. Horse-riding is available.
Route 2. Xidang – Zalang – Ninong – Yubeng River – Lower Yubeng Village – Upper Yubeng Village – Nanzongla Yakou – Reshuitang – Xidang. The route is an inner Circumambulating Pilgrimage route for the Tibetan people. It is too steep and many locals are not going this way.
Route 3. Xidang Reshuitang – Nanzongla Yakou (南宗拉垭口) – Upper Yubeng Village – Lower Yubeng Village – Yubeng River – Ninong. This line is the reverse of line 2.
The best time to visit Yubeng Village is from May to July in late spring and early summer; from September to October in autumn. Flowers bloom from may to July. From September to October, the scenery is charming. Large temperature difference between these two seasons and you’d better bring enough warm clothes when you travel.
Both upper Yubeng Village and lower Yubeng Village have hotels, including an international youth hostel. The condition is general, and cannot guarantee 24-hour electricity and hot water bath. There is food and drink in the hotel, but expensive. There are also small Sichuan restaurants. You can choose to stay at the base camp, but camping is not recommended because some campers are frozen to death while camping.
► The entrance ticket of Yubeng Village are not sold separately and would be included in the package of Meili Snow Mountain.
► During golden week and peak tourist season, it is best to book the accommodation in advance through Internet or telephone.
► Yubeng Village is a great place to take photos of Shennv Mountain Peak. In a sunny day, Nanzongyakou, Sacred Waterfall Inn in lower Yubeng Village, Meili Inn and Hikers Guesthouse in Upper Yubeng Village are the perfect places to shoot.

Many centuries later, the river like a sharp sword, split the rocks in half. On both sides of the river, rock is straight like wall, about 100 meters long. Wave rolled up the wind, the wind pushes the wave against the rock wall, and makes a huge roar. In the past, people dig through the stone walls of the east rock and building a walkway connecting to Tibet and India.

A pass is, by definition, a road on the top of a mountain. Nanzong Mountain Pass is the highest point on the 12-km road from Xidang to Yubeng village, with prayer flags hanging all around. With the altitude of 3,700 meters, Nanzong Mountain Pass is the only way getting to the Yubeng Village, which is also a large rest area. The mule-riding from Xidang village usually stops here. There are three stops on the road for rest and energy-refuelling, the first at an altitude of 3,100 meters, the second at 3,500 meters and the third at the Nanzong Mountain pass.
From Xidang Hot Spring to Nanzong Mountain Pass, people will pass over the mountains. It’s about 2 hours’ mule-riding and 4 hours’ walking. And tourists can only rent a mule at Xidang Hot Spring.
