Day 1 Lijiang Arrival

–Lijiang, a well-preserved old city of ethnic minorities with brilliant culture, is a central town of the Lijiang Autonomous County of the Naxi Ethnic Minority in Yunnan Province. Located on the plateau which is 2,400 meters above the sea level and embraced by the tree-covered Lion Mountain in the west, Elephant and Golden Row Mountains in the north, vast fertile fields in the southeast and crystal clear water running through, the old Town looks like a big jade ink slab, therefore got the alias the Town of Big Ink Slab (Dayanzhen). 

Day 2 Lijiang

In the morning, drive about 30 KM to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. You will take the sightseeing bus for a short visiting through the Baishuihe River, take the chairlift up to visit Yak Meadow (3700m) of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The cableway will be arranged according to the condition of the mountain. You will hike around 1 hour in the original forest in Yak Meadow (3700M).

After lunch, continue to visit Black Dragon Pool (Located at the foot of the Xiangshan Mountain (Elephant Hill) north of the city of Lijiang. As the water here is a lucid green color, it gained another name Jade Spring Park (Yuquan Park). There are many distinctive and ravishing sites in the park. Hiding in the lush trees or standing along the liquid pool is the antique and exquisite architectural pieces, which are in the style of Naxi.).

And explore Lijiang Ancient Town. Lijiang Ancient Town has a history of more than 800 years; it was listed as the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997. Here you will see the wonderful wooden architecture of Naxi ethnic people.

Drive to Tacheng Town for overnight.

Day 4 Tacheng-Cizhong

 In the afternoon, drive to Cizhong. Visit the Tibetan Catholic Church built by French missionaries in 1867, the church is used by Tibetan, Naxi and Lisu people. They still have the grapes planted by missionaries and old the traditional way of making wine. 

Day 5 Cizhong-Mingyong Village-Feilaisi

Drive to Mingyong Village. Visit Mingyong Glacier (2600m) which is the low altitude glacier of the lowest latitude in the world. Then you will trek down directly to the edge of Meikong River(2,050m/6,724ft) . Walk along the Mekong Grand Canyon and arrive in Xidang Village(2,200m/7,216ft) where you can visit some scattered Tibetan houses in the village. 

Arrive in Feilaisi in the late afternoon, you will have a nice sunset view of Meili Snow Mountain from the Sightseeing Platform, where you can see the 13 white pagodas meaning of the 13 peaks of Meili Snow Mountain over 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) above sea level, known as the “Prince’s 13 peaks”.

Day 6 Feilaisi-Benzilan-Shangri-la

In the morning, enjoy the sunrise view at Feilaisi Temple. Then drive to Shangri-la. You will stop at Benzilan for lunch. Visit Baimang Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, you will be able to view Baimang Snow Mountain if the weather is clear, pass the top part of today at 4292m altitude at 156km.

After that, visit the First Bend of Jinsha River or Moon Bend, which is the boundary between Sichuan and Yunnan. This is different from the First Bend of Yangtze River in Lijiang City. The bend in Shigu Town changes the flow direction of the Yangtze River but in Benzilan, the Moon Bend is just a grand bend between the mountains with an impressive scenery.

Upon arrival in Shangri-La, you will have entered the Tibetan cultural area and a landscape of barley fields and yaks scattered in the valleys.  Stroll around Dukezong Ancient Town, an important town of the Ancient Tea-horse Trade Caravan from Yunnan to Tibet and India. Walk up to the top of Guishan Hill or Tortoise Hill, you will see the largest Prayer Wheel of the world and have a panoramic view of shangri-La county and Dukezong Ancient Town.

3. How to Get to Yubeng Village in Winter

Because of the unique topography, there are no any roads to Yubeng Village, hiking and riding a mule are the only ways to go in and out Yubeng Village. While until July 2018, a dirty road was paved for locals and tourists can take their pickup truck getting in the village. Please pay attention that sometimes the pickup truck is not available, if you want to get in by the vehicle, please consult us in advance. So does the mules. If it snows, you can only walk into the village. Below we introduce you how to get to Xidang Hot Spring(the starting point of Yubeng trekking) from other places. How to Get to Xidang Hot Spring from Shangrila

•  Take long-distance bus from Shangri-La to Deqin, then transfer to Xidang Hot Spring. There are four long-distance buses from Shangri-La to Deqin every day.

•  It’s very easy to take a taxi to Feilaisi Temple, lasting for only 20 minutes. From Feilaisi Temple, there are mini buses leaving to Xidang Hot Spring every morning.

In winter, the transportation fare is a bit higher than usual.

4. Dining and Accommondation in Winter

The shops along the trail to Yubeng will be closed in winter and there are less guesthouses to choose from. The condition of accommodation is not like some hotels in modern cities. There are some wooden guesthouses in Tibetan style which will provide local food for customers. You can also enjoy a grand view of the big mountains. But, Some of the rooms are not equipped with an independent bathroom. In general, Yubeng is a good place for hikers, but you have to put up with the accommodation. In winter, heat blankets are available.

5. Travel Tips for Yubeng Village Trekking/Meili Snow Mountain Tour

•  Wear enough clothing and antiskid shoes. Winter in Meili area is cold with snow, to make your body in good condition, prepare for good clothes to keep warm and healthy. Usually fleece series are necessary.

•  If there are two people or more want to ride horse, you need to draw lots to decide to ride which horse. No matter what you get, you cannot change your horse by your own; otherwise you possibly rent no horse and cause troubles. This rule made by Tibetans is their own way to ensure fairness and it is useful in many places of Tibet.

• People in the area of Meili Snow Mountain believe in Tibetan Buddhism. We must respect the culture and beliefs of the Tibetan people when enter in the Tibetan area. Do not make any gestures to the holy mountain. Do not tear and tread the Prayer Flags hung by Tibetan people.

• Respect the local custom: in some places of Yubeng Village, sometimes, you will see the polygamy as a kind of marriage system, that is, women can be married to more than one husband. When you communicate with Tibetans, you must pay attention to their subtle relationship.

• When you pass through the way that has big or small prayer stones, please pass from the left side. And you may see some prayer flags hanging very low, please don’t step across but raise them to pass.

About Lancang River

The Mekong River, known as the Lancang River in China, is the heart and soul of mainland Southeast Asia. Taking its source from the Zhaqu of the Guangguori Peak of Tanggula Mountain Range in Qinghai Province, it is one of the biggest rivers in Southwest China, the longest river in Southeast Asia, the 4th longest river in Asia and the 9th longest river in the world. 

About the Great Bend of Lancang River in Deqin

Lying at the north of Deqin County, the Great Bend of Lancang-Mekong River is located in Mekong Grand Canyon, at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain. It is composed of several major turns, which is not only known for its deep and long valley, but also for its rapid river flow. The water in summer is muddy and surging, and in winter is clear and rapid, with the narrow river waves hitting the shore and the water sound of thunder, very spectacular.  

Compared with the First Bend of the Nu River and the First Bend of the Jinsha River, the Great Bend of Lancang-Mekong River is relatively remote and few tourists go there. At the Lanceng River Great Bend, you can see the main snow peak of the Meili Snow Mountain – Kawakbo peak from afar. 

Xidang village is under jurisdiction of Yunling township, connecting by dirt road. In 2009, there were 215 households and 1,088 rural residents, with a total workforce of 855, including 675 working in agriculture. The altitude is 2,234 meters, the annual average temperature of 15 ℃  and suitable for planting crops such as corn, wheat, highland barley. The main industries of the village are tourism and forestry. The village is currently developing featured tourism industry and the related tourism culture industry.

Xidang village is the only way getting to Yubeng Village. When arrive at Xidang Hot Spring, tourists have to walk or ride a mule into. Suggest you to stay at Xidang village before starting your Yubeng hiking for the better accommodation condition of the village.

Ninong Grand Valley is located in the lower reaches of the Yubeng valley. The stream of Ninong valley is formed by the snow water from several snow mountains in Yubeng village, which stretches for more than 10 kilometers, and finally flows into the Lancang river. The spectacular valley is the only way getting out of Yubeng village from Ninong, with a one-metre wide road cut between the waist of the steep mountains. 

Recommended Visiting Route

The Ninong Grand Valley is another hiking route getting out of Yubeng Village, which leads to Lancang River. After entering into the mountain, the road becomes narrow and steeper, with many boulder on the way. Then walk up to Ninong water canal in which flows the living water of Ninong village. This part of road is very narrow and dangerous. 

On the left is vertical hillstone and channel, right is cliff of hundreds of meters, below is surging river, no fence, no flat road, only rugged and rocks of different sizes. The canal takes up about two-thirds of the water, and sometimes the road is full of water, with only a few stones to be trample down. Later it forms a mountain waterfall.

Move forward and you can see the Yubeng River flowing into Lancang River. With another 2-hour walking, arrive at Ninong village. 

Note: The perfect route of Yubeng Village Hiking is getting in from Yubeng Village and getting out from Ninong village. The scenery to Ninong is very beautiful and it’s a pity if you miss it. However, the hiking path along the way is also dangerous for there are hikers died every year.

Why is Mingyong Village So Special?

Mingyong village is a typical Tibetan village in northwest Yunnan plateau. Since 2000, the number of visitors has doubled every year, and Mingyong village is reputed as a tourist village. Usually the tourists who want to see the Mingyong Glacier will set Mingyong village as a rest stop.

Where is Mingyong Village – Location

Mingyong village is located at the foot of Meili snow mountain in the Midwest of Deqin county, Diqing Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Yunnan province, the south facing Lancang river and the west closing to Kawakbo mountain. It is under jurisdiction of Sinong Village, Yunling Township, Deqin County.

History and Culture

In the village, there are still well-preserved Tibetan-style Tuzhang house, built along the hillside, which looks very spectacular from a distance, with ethnic characteristics in a close view. The four walls and the roof of the house are built with earth, with square door, most of three floors. The ground floor is used for livestock keeping, second for living room and the third for storage.

With the travel boom of Shangri-la of Diqing prefecture and the declare success of world heritage “Three Parallel Rivers”, more tourists come to Mingyong Glacier for sightseeing. Since 1998, cavalry transport serves the people from the county seat to the village. It’ll take about 1 hour from county seat to the village. Tourists can take a horse-riding up the hill to see the Mingyong Galcier. Since 2000, the number of visitors has doubled every year. Mingyong village has built one agritainment after another, receiving thousands of tourists from home and abroad, which is reputed as a tourist village.

About Meili Snow Mountain

Meili snow mountain is the most spectacular snow mountain cluster in Yunnan. Moreover, there are rare medicinal materials in the mountains. Meili Snow Mountain literally means “medicine mountain” in Tibetan.It is famous for the “thirteen peaks of Taizi Mountain”. Actually, this is not the exact thirteen peaks, but the general designation of many peaks, just taking the auspicious number in the Tibetan language “thirteen”. Among them, Kawakbo is the highest peak in Yunnan with the height of 6,740 m.

How to Get There?

From Deqin:
Deqin County is about 182 kilometers from Shangri-La city. Tourists can arrive at Shangrila city first and then take the bus or car-rental to Deqin. At Deqin Bus Station, there are unregular scheduled bus running to Mingyong Village. It takes you about one hour to drive there. And you can also rent a car directly to Mingyong Village from Shangrila.

From Feilaisi:
Another way to get there is to take a bus to Feilai Temple from a number of nearby destinations: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang (albeit, via Shangri-la), and Shangri-la itself. Then rent a car to Mingyong village. Due to lots of tourists going to Mingyong Glacier, you can share a car with others for the money saving.

Feilaisi Monastery, Deqin
Feilai temple, the best place to watch goden peaks of Meili mountain at sunrise. So if u plan to watch sunrise, it’s absolutely a good idea to live at Feilai temple the night before. But actually it is unusual to see the goden peaks. The peaks of the mountains are often surrounded with clouds due to the high altitude they are. And this makes more interestings for Meili. There’s a kind of saying that, if any Japanese appears in this area then people can’t see the golden peaks that day. This is because Japanese are not welcomed by Tibetan people. Yes, they hate Japan and Japanese, just like people in notheast of China.

Yubeng Village in Deqin County, Shangrila
Yubeng is a secluded small Tibetan village tucked away at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain in Deqin county, the northwestern corner of Yunnan Province. It is only accessible by foot or horse/mule. But the trip, however arduous, is worth it. Yubeng is divided into an upper and a lower section. Both parts offer fabulous views of the Mei Li Snow Mountains. Lower Yubeng is smaller, quieter and closer to the lakes and waterfalls that you will likely visit during your stay.

Lancang-Mekong River Grand Canyon
It is called the Lancang River after it reaches Changdu. The river runs south until it leaves China at the Nanla Bayout of Yunnan Province and therefrom changes its name from the Lancang River to the Mekong River. The river finally empties into the Pacific Ocean in the south of Ho Chi Minh City of Vietnam.

About the Sacred Lake

The Sacred Lake sits in the hillside of Shennv Mountain Peak, at a altitude of 4600m. It’s about 1500m above Yubeng Village and about 500m above Ice Lake, so rare people come here even the locals.

The Sacred Lake is small but clear and bright. The water reflects the blue sky and the white clouds of different shapes, which make people feel happy and relaxed. The Sacred Lake is an undeveloped attraction, few people have been there, it’s said that the roads are challenging without signposts, so some may be get lost. Thus treking to Sacred Lake with a guide is necessary.

The Hiking Route

There is a path around a meadow in front of a temple in Yubeng Lower Village, which is leading to Sacred Lake. There is another small bridge leading to the opposite mountain. You can go up to the mountain along a path, and a notice board stands at the side of the path, it says no passing. This is the start point of Sacred Lake hiking route. The uphill road is very steep and would be slippery in a rainy day. You may go through a large scale of bamboo forest, then continue to go up along the path, you will arrive at a oak forest where there are lots of bushes almost without a big tree, at a altitue of 4000m. continue to trek further, it’s a highland meadow where there is a shabby stone house. Here is close to the Sacred Lake. Then continue to go up the slope, you will see two big chinese character piled by stones which means sacred lake. The Sacred Lake is over there.

It’s 20 kilometers to go there and back, it usually takes around 8 hours. Howerver, since the uphill roads hiking will exert a lot of energy, it’s suggested to depart in the early morning. Some relatively weak people may spend 10-12 hours to go there and back. You’d better not stay overnight on the mountain because the temperature may go down for 10℃ because of the high altitude. Once having the altitude stress or other emergencies, you would be helpless.

Day 1 Kunming Arrival

You’ll begin your journey to the diverse and captivating province of Yunnan from the capital city, Kunming. Upon arrival at the Kunming International Airport, meet your local guide and transfer to the hotel.

You will take a leisurely stroll along the Green Lake, a charming area of tea houses and small boutiques selling handicrafts and beautiful local paintings. If time permits, you will have a Kunming city tour.

You will drive 86 km to the Stone Forest. Day 3 Dali

Sightseeing and Activities: Three-pagodas in Chongshen Temple, Erhai Lake Cruise, Dali Ancient Town

In the morning, take the high speed train to Dali which is a historically and culturally famous city of China, it is renowned for her historical interest and Bai ethnic culture. You will visit the Three Pagodas in Chongshen Monastery which has a history of over 1,800 years and located at the foot of Cangshan Mountain facing to the Erhai Lake. Three Pagodas are made of three ancient independent pagodas forming a symmetrical triangle.

After lunch, you’ll cruise in Erhai Lake by the small boat to the Jinsuo Islet in the east Erhai Lake. There are 200 Bai ethnic families around 1000 people in Jinsuo Island. In Erhai Lake cruise, you will enjoy a view of the green Cangshan Mountain and the Three Pagodas from a far as well as lots of birds and seagulls flying over the lake.

At last, you will visit the Ancient Dali Town, walk around the Foreigner Street and enjoy the relax time with local people. After climbing up to the City Wall of Dali, you will have a panoramic view of the Erhai Lake.

Day 4 Dali-183KM- Lijiang by Private Car

After breakfast , you will head for Xizhou Town to fully appreciate Bai-style traditional architectural courtyards, taste their fragrant Three-Course Tea and explore their distinctive culture. Visit Zhoucheng Village and the Bai people’s Tie-dying cloth workshop where you can take some special souvenir with the Bai ethnic style.

Drive about 180KM to Lijiang with the beautiful farmlands and ethnic villages on the way. After lunch you’ll head for the scenic Black Dragon Pool and the Dongba Museum to explore the rich Naxi minority culture.

In the late afternoon, explore Lijiang Old Town. Lijiang Old Town has a history of more than 800 years; it was listed as the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997. Here you will see the wonderful wooden architecture of Naxi ethnic people.

Day 5 Lijiang

Sightseeing and Activities: Yulong Snow Mountain, Ganhaizi Meadow, Baishui River and Terraces, Baisha Old Town and Murals

Enjoy the sunrise of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Lijiang Ancient Town in the morning, drive about 30KM to Ganhaizi Meadow(3100M), you will take the sightseeing bus for a short visiting through the Baishuihe River and Blue Moon Valley, take the chairlift up to visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The cableway will be arranged according to the condition of the mountain. You will hike around 1 hour in the original forest in Spruce Meadow (3200M).

After lunch, you will enjoy the Impression Lijiang Ethnic Show directed in Ganhaizi Meadow(3100M). A cultural show demonstrating the traditions and lifestyles of the Naxi, Yi and Bai peoples of the area. The show takes place inside Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Park at 3500m in an outdoor theater specifically designed to showcase the mountain which is used as a backdrop. The production itself was designed by Zhang Yimou, Fan Yue and Wang Chaoge, with a cast of over 500 people and a number of horses.

In the afternoon, you’ll stroll through Baisha Old Town, which is an enchanting traditional Yunnan town. Visit the Baisha Murals about 600 years old, which is one part of the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997.

Day 6 Lijiang-Tiger Leaping Gorge-Shangri-La

From Lijiang, you’ll drive about 60KM to the First Bend on the Yangtze River with imposing gorge scenery, visit the Iron Chain Bridge, the Red Army’s Long March Memorial Monument in the Shigu town. The town of Stone Drum got its name from a large, cylindrical, marble tablet shaped like a drum. The scenery is magnificent as the road running through the Lijiang valley which is filled with wheat fields and drying haystacks.

Visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. With 34 rapids of the Yangtze River, it is called the Jinsha River in this area because you can find gold in the river.

Afternoon, you’ll head for Shangri La, the former Zhongdian which is well-known as the paradise destination for every tourist. Upon arrival in Shangri-La, you will enter the Tibetan cultural area and a landscape of barley fields and yaks scattered in the valleys. Walk around Dukezong Ancient Town, an important town of the Ancient Tea-horse Trade Caravan from Yunnan to Tibet and India. Pay a visit to Guishan Hill Park and Giant Prayer Wheel.

Day 7 Shangri-La

Sightseeing and Activities: Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, Bita Lake & Shudu Lake, Tibetan Village

In the morning, visit the Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan. Songzanlin Monastery has another alias – ‘the little Potala Palace ‘, so named because the whole monastery is in the traditional style with mysterious atmosphere. And afterwards you’ll visit the tranquil Bita Lake & Shudu Lake in Pudacuo National Park. Pudacuo National Park is located in one of the most biologically-diverse regions of the world. While the region comprises only 0.7 percent of China’s land area, but more than 20 percent of the country’s plant species, about one-third of its mammal and bird species and almost 100 endangered species. Then drive to visit A Tibetan Village. 

Day 8 Shangri-La – Deqin-Feilaisi

In the morning, drive 4 to 5 hours to Deqin County (3400m altitude) which is 187km away from Zhongdian via Baima Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, where you will be able to view Baima Snow Mountain if the weather is clear, pass the top part of today at 4292m altitude at 156km.

After traversing the mountain ranges, you will make a short stop and have lunch at Benzilan town, take some shots on the first bend of Jinsha(Yangtze) River, Dongzhulin monastery and Baima (white horse) Snow Mountain. The view along the way is fantastic with different kinds of trees, streams down the valley, prayer flags and stupas, and Tibetan villages.

Stay at Feilaisi.

Day 09 Feilaisi-Deqin-Shangri-La

Try to get up early in the morning, enjoy the magic sunrise of Meili Snow Mountain. Visit Feilaisi Monastery and enjoy the sunrise of Meili Snow Mountain in the early morning, then drive back to Shangri-La, have a nice experience of Yangtze River Grand Canyon, Baima Snow Mountain again on the way back.

Then drive another 1.5-hour to Mingyong village, where you will walk on the trails for about 4km to Mingyong Glaciers of Meili Snow Mountain, walk another one your or so, you will get to Tibetan Taizi Monastery – another good spot to view the magnificent Mingyong Glaciers. (optional: You can choose to hire a horse to go up to the glacier on your own expense in order to save your energy). After Mingyong Glacier in Mingyong Village, you will do some trekking along the Lancang River Grand Canyon as well as some Tibetan villages. This will be your most impressive part of your trip to Yunnan.

Drive 4 hours back to Shangri La via Baima Snow Mountain in the afternoon.

Day 10 Shangri-La Departure

Yubeng Village is a beautiful and miraculous place. When trekking in Yubeng Village, tourists will have a sense of walking at Shangri-La. Because of its unique location, there are only 20 households living here and connects outside world only with one small road. Yubeng Village is divided into upper village and lower village. From upper village, tourists can go to the base camp of the Joint Sino-Japanese,while from the lower village, tourists can go to Yubeng, Ancient Seal Character and other scenic spots.

In the morning, drive 4 to 5 hours to Deqin County (3400m altitude) which is 187km away from Shangri-La. The view along the way is fantastic with different kinds of trees, streams down the valley, prayer flags and stupas, and Tibetan villages. From Shangri-La, after half an hour driving, you will have a panoramic view of Naxi Pottery Village; drive down to the river valley, continue the nice scenery along the Jinsha River to Benzilan Town where you will have lunch.

After lunch, drive uphill to the Dongzhulin Monastery which is located in Shusong Village, Benzilan District, Deqin County, and 105km from the seat of Zhongdian County. The Yunnan-Tibet Road passes behind the temple and cars can get straight to the temple. The Dongzhulin Monastery was built in 1667, the sixth year of the Kang Xi Period in Qing Dynasty. Visit the First Bend of Jinsha River or Moon Bend, which is the boundary between Sichuan and Yunnan. This is different from the First Bend of Yangtze River in Lijiang City. The bend in Shigu Town changes the flow direction of the Yangtze River but in Benzilan, the Moon Bend is just a grand bend between the mountains with an impressive scenery. Visit Baimang Snow Mountain Nature Reserve, you will be able to view Baima Snow Mountain if the weather is clear, pass the top part of today at 4292m altitude at 156km.

Arrive in Feilaisi in the late afternoon, you will have a nice sunset view of Meili Snow Mountain from the Sightseeing Platform, where you can see the 13 white pagodas meaning of the 13 peaks of Meili Snow Mountain over 6,000 meters (19,685 feet) above sea level, known as the “Prince’s 13 peaks”.

Day 5 Upper Yubeng Village- Cuoka Sacred Ice Lake-Upper Yubeng Village​

Enjoy the sunrise of the Mt. Kawagebo Glacier from the guesthouse, then walk up to Binghu Ice Lake of the Meili Snow Mountain.Walk through the original forest from Yubeng Village, you will see some horses and yaks, as well as some wild animals if you are lucky enough. A beautiful river originate from the Glacier Park, walk along the river with some wooden bridges and spruce trees, you will have a wonderful view of Mt. Kawagebo Glacier. At last, arrive at the Ice Lake which is located at the foot of the glacier. Trek down back to Yubeng village in the late afternoon and enjoy the sunset of Kawagebo Peak .

The return trek takes 3 to 4 hours. This one-day excursion is only reserved for strong hikers. Before June, the upper plateau is often covered by snow. Bring enough food and ask Aqinbu to find a good guide for you. It may be more reasonable to do this trek in two days and overnight camp at Cuoka Pasture.
