The Wenhai lake is a seasonal alpine lake and wetland. Throughout the Spring and Summer. The Wenhai lake basin is one big grazing ground with various little streams winding through the grassland. Water collects on the south end of the basin, then disappears from the ground (through the Karst rock formation underneath) flowing toward Lashihai to the south. During every July and August when the rain season arrives, water begins to rise in Wenhai, and the lake is usually filled up by October. Then during the winter season, Wenhai water level lowers again until March of the next year. Then ,the entire lake is emptied of water ,when the basin turns into a grassland again. Every year between November and January of the next year, birds from as far as Siberia and Qinghai come to Wenhai to rest, creating a great opportunity for bird watching in the area.
Wenhai is located on the southern slope of Yulong (Jade Dragon) snow mountain and it is a part of the Lashihai provincial level Alpine Wetlands Nature Reserve. The elevation at Wenhai is 3,100 meters. The Wenhai area is an ideal location for visitors to explore and learn about northwestern Yunnan’s dramatic geological formations and rich biodiversity. The unique climate and soil in the area nourished a variety of vegetative covers and plant species. Including old-growth forests, shrubs and meadows. There are also unique wild flowers that bloom all four seasons. Including over twenty species of rhododendrons. Wenhai is also home to a variety of economically viable mushrooms and precious medicinal herbs.

Wenhai Lake is a habitat for migrating birds, most notably the endangered black stork. Each year, for reasons not yet completely known, Wenhai undergoes a transformation from sub-alpine lake to grazing grasslands. Beginning in early spring, the lake gradually disappears, believed to drain through underground limestone formations to Lashi Lake, about 500 meters below. Then, with the return of the summer rainy season, Wenhai Lake begins to fill again. By fall it reaches its full size, ready for the arrival of migratory birds in late December. The watershed’s highland forests support a wide variation of plant and animal species, including protected raptors, forest wildlife, traditional medicinal plants and treasured fungi. In spring, the region’s famous rhododendrons – over 15 species — burst into bloom, creating mountains of colorful flowers.
Take a bus/taxi or charter a van from Lijiang to arrive at Baisha Old Town and start a 1~3 days hiking to Wenhai village.
Trekking to Wenhai
Starting from Yuhu of Baisha, the town where Joseph Rock lived for 17 years in the 1930’s and 40’s, a steep uphill climb followed by a traverse through a shallow bowl and a sharp descent to the Wenhai Ecolodge takes about 4 hours, which gives hikers time to enjoy the scenery. The forests surrounding Wenhai Village are home to many species of plants and animals, including musk deer and Lady Amherst’s pheasants.
For the more adventurous, Wenhai can be the starting point of a three-day trek through the Tiger Leaping Gorge, which tracks an upper stretch of the Yangtze River through one of the world’s deepest ravines. (Environmentalists are fighting plans to dam the gorge for a hydropower project that would flood much of the area, but not Wenhai, which is at a higher elevation.) Other activities include horseback riding, visiting local schools and, from November to March, bird-watching.Rhododendrons blossom in April and May; in July and August, it rains most afternoons.
With Wenhai lake in the foreground and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain towering in the background, the tranquil Naxi village of Wenhai makes for a pretty sight, especially in the rainy season (May to August) when its lush banks are covered with splendid blooms of wildflowers and primroses. Enjoy a relaxing walk in the meadows of Wenhai and watch alpine animals such as yaks, miniature horses, black pigs, goats and sheep grazing.

Black Dragon Pool (also Heilongtan), or Jade Spring(Yuquan) Park is the main headwater of the Yushui River which goes through the Old Town. People believe that the gods of the Naxi people are living in the chestnut woods, beside the mouth of springs, behind the carved doors and below the bridges. The springs come from the god-protected mountains and gather in this place and finally form the dragon pool. Then water goes down a waterfall and becomes the Yuhe River, pouring life to the Old Town.
The Black Dragon Pool is like an ancient architecture museum. Some of the famous buildings were established suburbs have under protection actually collected from other places. People moved the traditional buildings that almost had been ruined here and let them be protected. Among them, the most famous buildings are the Villa Jietuolin of the King Mu and the Five Phoenixes Tower combines the typical Lamaism plane pattern and exquisite wooden structure of the Naxi architecture. Both the frame and the technology are unprecedented. The buildings can rarely be found even in the world of Chinese architecture.
The Black Dragon Pool’s distinguishing feature caters to the habituation of the Naxi who loves nature very much. In the past, it was a good choice for people form the Old Town to go picnicking. They gave themselves a good reason for picnic when they came to thank the blessing of the gods. They took all kinds of delicious food, wine and their specially made hotpot here and gathered together to enjoy the happy and relaxing life.
Located at the foot of Elephant Hill, the Black Dragon Pool is a famous pond in the scenic Jade Spring Park, or Yuquan Park. The Black Dragon Pool Park Lijiang is commonly referred as the Temple of the Dragon King, and is the landmark of Lijiang.
Now Black Dragon Pool buildings are divided into up and down two Taoist temples. Down temple “Black Dragon Palace”, which was said that built in 1454, was a type of building with one hall with two enclosed courtyards. Outer courtyard had a censer, engraved with eight diagrams, on both sides are the big dipper figure, these are the Taoism used to ward off evil spirits. In the inner courtyard patio pool there is a vivid paddled black dragon carving. Legend has it that it is the Du Dragon King in charge of Yunnan clouds and rainfalls.
In front of the Black Dragon Palace is the pool. Two pools in the front and back are interlinked, separated by a stone bridge in the middle. On the left is the muddy pool, it is the area of 2600 square meters, the depth of the water up to 50 centimeters.
On the right is the clear pool, with 600 square meters, the average water depth is 7 meters and the deepest can up to 11 meters, storage capacity of 4400 cubic meters. It is Black Dragon Pool. Two pools connected to the water, and due to distinct color of water, it looks like a Taoist diagram of the universe. This is mainly because the clear pool is deep, springs come out by the pool bottom, so the water is clear; And muddy pool water is shallow and have mud into the pool after raining along the hillside, so the water is muddy. Standing on the bridge can find a rare sight: “there is no interaction of fishes between two pools, a bridge cut the water from two pools and the colors in two pools are different.”
▪ Five Phoenix Tower
Five Phoneix Tower, the original temple was built in Zhishan Fuguo Temple, 1979 moved to Black Dragon Pool. The temple was built in the Ming dynasty, originally it is Family Mu’s villa and family temple. Tusi Mu had met famous traveler and geographer Xu Xiake in the Ming dynasty in the temple.
▪ Dragon Shrine
Dragon Shrine is the main building of Black Dragon Pool, including stage, Deyue Building (Getting Moon Building), distributed on the axis line. Dragon Shrine faces west, it is a type of building with quadrangle courtyard and two patios, and there is gate, two wing-rooms and hall. The hall is single eave hipped-gable roof, three rooms wide, in the front is platform, and verandas surrounded are connected.
The Black Dragon Pool takes its name from an ancient legend. It’s said that once upon a time there were ten evil dragons that terrorised the land. Lu Dongbin, one of the Eight Immortals of Chinese legends, jailed nine of the dragons in a tower, leaving only the youngest black dragon. The black dragon was forced to protect the land to keep its freedom, and still lives in the pool today.
The Black Dragon Pool is divided into two parts by a white marble bridge, and despite the water being connected, the sides maintain different colours and the fish on either side refuse to swim to the opposite pool. Additionally, Black Dragon Pool has never dried up, even during the worst droughts.

Black Dragon Pool Park or known as Hei Long Tan Park, is located at the foot of Longquan Hill, about 17 kilometers (10 miles) north of the center of Kunming. In this park, the most famous site is the Black Dragon Pool, which has an area of 600 square meters. The pool is divided into two parts by a bridge, and although the water is connected, the water at two sides has different colors and it is clear at one side but turbid at the other side. The fish in either side never swim to the opposite part of the pool. How strange! Moreover, for hundreds of years, this wondrous pool has never dried up, even in drought years.
An ancient legend lends the Black Dragon Pool its name; it is said that a long time ago there were ten wicked dragons that caused much destruction and did great harm to people. One day, one of the Eight Immortals of the Chinese legend ‘Lu Dongbin’ subdued nine of the dragons and jailed them in a tower. Only the youngest black dragon was left, charging with protecting and benefiting the people as the price of its freedom. This dragon is believed living in the pool till today. The pool is divided into two parts by a bridge, and although the water is connected, the two sides are different colors and the fish in either side never swim to the opposite part of the pool. Moreover, for hundreds of years, this wondrous pool has never dried up, even in drought years.
Near the Black Dragon Pool is the Black Dragon Palace, which was built in 1394, in the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty (1368 – 1644), and rebuilt in 1454, in the reign of Emperor Jingtai of the Ming Dynasty. The whole palace consists of three halls and two courtyards, and the main hall features a stone plaque written by the governor of Yunnan in the Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1911) to praise the views here. The Black Dragon Palace is also called the Lower Temple, because when you walk along the stone steps, you come directly to the Upper Temple – the Dragon Fountain Temple – which is hidden among ancient trees. This 570-year-old temple includes Thunder Deity Hall, North Pole Hall, Sanqing Hall, Jade Emperor Hall and some other halls in which the deities of Taoism are worshiped. The Dragon Fountain Temple is the largest Taoist temple in southern China.
In front of the temple there are three huge and ancient trees: the Tang Dynastic Plum, the Song Dynastic Cypress and the Ming Dynastic Camellia. The main branch of the plum has already died of old age, but the remaining branches growing out sideways are still full of vital force and vigor. The 25-meter-high (82 feet) cypress has a very thick trunk – so thick that it takes four or five adults with linked arms to encircle it. The camellia is a prodigious tree which blossoms every year and always precedes the other camellias.
The Pavilion of Stele keeps many rare steles, tablets and plaques. The most famous is a tablet engraved with four Chinese characters – ‘Wan Wu Zi Sheng’ – which means that all things in the world are propagating and developing, flourishing and animated. The inscription was written by a famous Taoist of the Ming Dynasty named Liu Yuanran whose handwriting is vigorous and lively. The four characters are written in one continuous stroke and look convex but feel concave to the touch, owing to the unusual way they reflect light.
The Ming Dynasty was overthrown by the Qing Dynasty in Chinese history, and the potentates of the Qing were all from a minority ethnic group called ‘Manchu’. When the Manchu marched into the Chinese mainland and became the rulers, many people killed themselves to show their loyalty to the Ming Dynasty, including a scholar named Xue Erwang and his whole family. They drowned themselves, and the tomb of these loyalists is located beside the Black Dragon Pool.
In fact, centered by the Black Dragon Pool, there are also many attractions in this park, including Longquan Upper Taoist Temple and Lower Taoist Temple, Plum Garden, Azalea Valley, Red Maple forest, etc.. The Black Dragon Pool is only one of highlights of the park. There is a very cool stream running throughout the park and you can follow it up through bonsai gardens, different plantations and different types of trees.
The Dragon Fountain Temple is the largest Taoist temple in southern China. This temple was originally built in 1394 during the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty and later rebuilt in 1454 during the reign of Emperor Jingtai of the Ming Dynasty, so it has a hundreds-years-old history. The whole palace consists of three halls and two courtyards, including Thunder Deity Hall, North Pole Hall, Sanqing Hall, Jade Emperor Hall and some other halls in which the Dragon King (the God of Rain in Chinese mythology) and other deities of Taoism are worshiped.

There are 443 vascular plants in Jianhu Nature Reserve, belonging to 281 families and 281 genera. The quantitative structure of the seed plants in the reserve is relatively poor, which reflects the ancient and conservative nature of the flora in the area in some extent
Jianhu wetland vegetation is divided into swamp vegetation type and shallow water plant wetland vegetation type.
(1) Swamp Vegetation Type Group
The Jianhu Lake swamp vegetation is mainly composed of Grasses, Polygonaceae, Compositae and other herbaceous plants, which the coverage is more than 90%. It belongs to the grassland marsh wetland, which is distributed in the lakeside zone, the lakeshore and lake transition zone around the lake, including Form Cynodon dactylon(狗牙根群系), Form Polygontum hydropiper(水蓼群系) and Form Schoenoplectus tabernaeomonta(水葱群系).
(2) Shallow Water Plant Wetland Vegetation Group
Shallow water plant wetland vegetation group consists of shallow water wetland plant community. The Jianhu wetland plant community is distributed in the lake. The aquatic plants are rich in the world, such as Common ducksmeat(紫萍),Lemna duckweed(青萍), Water caltrop(菹草), Hornwort(金鱼藻), etc. In the meanwhile, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau also is rich in the unique species of cauliflower. including floating plants, floating leaf plants and submerged plants, of which submerged plant communities were dominant.

As for the Jianhu wetland, the geomorphic structure and landform type are very simple. But the whole expansion of the Jianhu Lake Basin and the nature reserve reveals the diverse types of geological landforms, complex structure and prominent features. Specifically for the following several aspects:
(1) Diverse landforms;
(2) The landscape combination among mountains from north and south;
(3) Based on the original type and the primary landform;
(4) Special landform development and so on.
The main landform types include mountainous landforms, valleys and dams (basins). As for the mountain topography, the highest elevation reaches 2833 m with the lowest elevation of 2186 m.

Bitahai Nature Reserve, covering an area of 840 square kilometers, is 3,538 m above sea level, 3km long and 1km wide; it is the highest lake in Yunnan Province. The lake there is known as the pearl of Yunnan. It is like a mirror, the water is clear, and the sun is always shining. The plant life here is rich in variety due to its subtropical climate and a wide array of wildlife living here such as leopards, black-necked cranes, rhesus monkeys, etc.
Bitahai Lake lies in the east of Shangri-La County of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, which is one of the core spots in Pudacuo National Park with an altitude over 3500 meters above sea level.
Legend has it that a woman from the sky broke her mirror into pieces during her combing. They fell to the ground and became various lakes in the world, while the Bitahai Lake is one of the most beautiful pieces with emeralds.
There is another legend that it’s the “poison lake” mentioned in the Epic of King Gesar. When the Jiang& Ling Battle fighting to Bitahai Lake, the soilders of Ling State were strayed into the lake and drown due to the snow and ice making the lake hazy. Jiang State thought it was the result of the protection of the god of Bita mountain, so he built a temple on the hill.
Others says the insland was a summer resort for the Naxi emperor of the Ming dynasty, while others say it was a temple built by treasure hunters…
“Bita” in Tibetan means a place with a dense oak forest and “Bitahai” means a quiet lake. Bitahai Nature Reserve became an established nature reserve in 1984, and was established to protect the rare wildlife, and plant life in the region. A few of the plant types here include coniferous trees, broad leaf trees, shrubs and marshy grassland; a wide array of wildlife including leopards, black-necked cranes, as well as different types of fish such as the local three-lipped fish. This fish is said to have a history of 2,500,000 years, supposedly left over from the Quaternary Glacier- the latest great glaciers.
The lake is like a mirror, the water is clear, and the sun is always shining. In the morning, the water is as black as ink. At noon, it is as green as jade. In the evening, the water and the sky merge into a dazzling light. The most breathtaking view of the lake is in the moonlight. In the midnight, a bright full moon appeared over the eastern mountains and treetops.
In the middle of the lake stands an island, shaped like a boat sailing on the water. The island is 30 meters above sea level and is covered with rare plants, as well as spruce and azalea. Here the birds are chirping and the flowers are sweetly fragrant. When you step on the island, you feel like you’re in a paradise.
When the flowers bloom, the air is filled with a wonderful fragrance that will refresh you. In May the azaleas bloom, and decorate the forest, and in autumn they fall into the lake and leave a gift for everyone to see, because the flowers have a slight bit of poison in them when the fish eat them they all go belly up for a bit and float on the lake, kind of looks like they’re drunk or unconscious, and the birds are the only thing you’ll hear besides the running of the water. No one screaming, no car horns, nothing but peace and tranquility.
Bitahai Lake is rich in wild animals and plants. The vegetation is characterized by abies -fabri and spruce. Among the rare animals and birds, black -necked cranes are Class-A species under state protection. The Bitahai Lake has abundant fish resources. The local three-lipped fish is said to have a history of 2,500,000 years, supposedly left over from the Quaternary Glacier- the latest great glaciers.

As if a graceful lady, Tianchi Lake represents her beauty to the world continuously.

A legend is handed down by locals around Tianchi Lake. It was a grass for graze, rich in the wild flowers. One year, the son of the Dragon King of Erhai Lake could not stand the abuse of the maiden and the friction between the brothers, he determined to leave the Erhai Sea and find another place to live. So he invited Dali’s caravan to carry the things form his father in the mountain gorge to the direction of the setting sun. Finally, he was fascinated by the charming dam hidden in the mountain. At the moment, I will settle down and let the horse riders go to the mountain to spend the night. Each person will have a blue brick as a pillow. Repeatedly, don’t open their eyes regardless of what happens at night so that you can be safe. In the middle of the night, with lightning and thunder,it rained heavily. When the weather was fine, they discovered that the blue bricks of the pillows last night turned into gold bricks. The fascinating green grass dam disappeared. Instead, it was a green lake. The lake slammed down the Dongshan Pass and flowed into the dry fields under the mountain.

It has a large scale of virgin forests and is home to more than 50 species of first-class and second-class protected animals such as the snub-nosed monkey. Located in the half mountain of Haba Snow Mountain, Heihai Lake or Black Black is also named Black Sea (Heihai/黑海 in Chinese). Haba Snow Mountain or Haba Xueshan is located in 120 kilometers southeast Shangri-La city, Yunnan province. Mountain raises 5396m above the sea level, and is one of the tallest peaks in Yunnan province. Its lowest slopes are crossed by the popular Tiger Leaping Gorge trail.
Haba Snow Mountain is a mountain rising above the northwest side of Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan, China. It rises opposite the higher Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and towers 3,500 metres above the upper reaches of the Yangtze River(Jinsha River). There are numerous alpine glacial lakes located in the reserve, most of which are more than 3,500 meters above sea level. Among them, the sceneries of Heihai Lake, Yuanhai Lake, Huanghai Lake and Shuanghai Lake are most enchanting.
Alpine moraine lakes is a glacier relic formed by ancient cirque hydrops which is the only glacial relic distribution area of “Dali glacial period” in the area of “three parallel rivers”. Heihai Lake is the most famous one.

It is located at an altitude of 4,200 meters to the southeast of Haba snow mountain, belonging to a typical plateau glacial lake with an average depth of 18 meters, and the lake area is 3,800 square meters. Inside the lake swims the alpine snow fish, also called alpine giant salamander. It’s called Heihai Lake due to the black and blue stones distributed in the bottom, making the surface of the water black-colored.
The Heihai Lake is also the holy lake of the Naxi ethnic group. It is said that you can’t shout at the lakeside, or you will enrage the holy lake and make heavy rain. Near the Heihai Lake are some plateau lakes such as Huanghai Lake, as well as Alpine azalea forest around the lake.
Tourists can also make a tent around Heihai Lake and set a campfire, with singing and dancing.
This glacial lake is surrounded by dense forests, home to rare animals such as golden monkeys and antelopes. The scenery here differs throughout the seasons, from ice and snow in winter to clear, blue water decorated with colorful flowers in summer. It is said that people must speak softly here, for they shout, showers, winds, and even hail could burst from the sky. A thick fog hovers over the lake, and it could form into rain and hail while jarred by sound waves.
Tingming Lake is located on Gaoligong Mountain, 600 meters (656 yards) from Fengxue Yakou (mountain mouth of wind and snow), in the north east of Pingma, Lushui county, Yunnan province, between Tingming Mountain and Wuzhong Mountain, about 36 kilometers away from Pingma town.
Tingming Lake is featured by the mysterious colors. People here can only speak to each other with neutral tone. If they shout loudly, the wind and rain will come in a flash. Local people also call it charming lake. In the past, whenever there was a great drought, people at the foot of the mountain prepared sacrifices and rain gear, and went to the lake to pray for rain from the gods. The people set out their offerings, set up the canopy, and then sang and danced. In an instant, clouds billowed over the lake and the wind and rain followed. In fact, a thick fog saturated with moisture hovers over the lake, and it could form into rain and hail while jarred by sound waves.

Lots of wild animals inhabit and jazz around the lake including some natural rare animals such as gray-belly-tragopans, mountain donkeys, golden monkeys, Little Bears, oryxes. Tingming Lake like a brilliant bright pearl hiding in the deep mountain, under the sunshine, the clear lake water moving and glittering, like thousands of pearls shaking on a jade mirror.
Liuku is the capital of the Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture. Tourists can take the long-distance to Liuku and then take a chartered car to Pianma Town of Lushui County. At last, hike to Tingming Lake. Most of the tourists will rent a car to due to the inconvenience of transportation. Yunnan Exploration Travel can provide the car-rental service with good vehicle and skilled driver.
The scenery of the lake area varies with the seasons. In the spring, the melting trickle of snow mountains flows into the lake, and the rhododendrons of the mountains dot the fields. Wild animals also wake up from hibernation and play around the lake. In summer, the green woods are full of flowers, up above is the boundless sea of clouds. In the autumn, the blue lake reflects the golden leaves on the shore. When winter comes, snow covers everything. The lake becomes tranquil and quiet.
There are a number of hotels in Liuku, the capital of Nujiang Prefecture. In some small villages, you can stay in a tent or rent a room in the homes of local people for relatively low prices. Or you can get accommodation near natural reserve station.
