It is located in the southeast of Yunnan and the middle east of Honghe Autonomous Prefecture, bordering Yanshan county(砚山县) and Qiubei county(邱北县) to the east, Mengzi(蒙自) and Gejiu(个旧) to the south, Jianshui(建水) to the west and Mile(弥勒) to the north. It is 220 kilometers away from Kunming city, and the important land passage to southeast Asia.

By Train
There is no railway stations in Kaiyuan, you can’t reach to Kaiyuan directly by train. If you want to take train, you are suggested to transfer in Mengzi North Railway Station.
You will spend about 3 hour and a half on the train from Kunming to Mengzi, then around 1 hour drive from Mengzi to Kaiyuan City. The starting price of train ticket is 40.5 CNY. Every day, there are at least 4 trains from Kunming to Mengzi. More information about Kunming to Mengzi Transportation.

Yuanyang County (元阳县) (Xinjie Town (新街镇)) → Yuanyang-Luchun Secondary Highway (元绿二级公路, S214) → Luchun County (绿春县) → National Highway G219 (G219国道) → Jinping County (金平县)
Key Points:
- Pass through Luchun County (绿春县), suitable for a short rest.
- Certain sections of G219 have numerous curves; exercise caution while driving.
Road Conditions:
- During the rainy season (June to September), landslides may occur. It’s advisable to check the weather forecast before departure.
- Gas stations are sparse along the route; it’s recommended to refuel in Yuanyang or Luchun.
2. Public Transportation (Bus)
Travel Plan:
- Yuanyang (元阳) → Luchun (绿春): Approximately 2.5 hours by bus.
- Luchun (绿春) → Jinping (金平): Approximately 3 hours by bus.
Notes:
- Limited daily departures: Yuanyang to Luchun has about 2–3 buses per day; Luchun to Jinping has 1–2 buses per day. It’s advisable to purchase tickets in advance at the bus station.
- Total travel time is approximately 6–7 hours, including transfer waiting time.
