1. Airport Shuttle Bus: There is a direct bus service from the airport to Lijiang Ancient Town (丽江古城). The bus operates from 9:00 to 20:00 every hour, with a total of 12 trips per day. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes to an hour。
2. Taxi or Ridesharing Services: You can also take a taxi or use ridesharing services to directly reach the ancient town from the airport. The trip takes about 40 minutes and costs around 100-150 RMB。
3. Public Bus and Transfer: Another option is to take the bus from the airport to the city center and then transfer to a bus heading to Lijiang Ancient Town. This option might be more time-consuming but is usually more cost-effective。

At present, there is a pair of high speed train available between Dali and Lijiang with the duration of about 1.5 hours. The ticket fare is CNY 52 for a second class and CNY 83 for a first class. The top speed is 200 km/h (124 mph). Dali and Lijiang are two hot destinations in Yunnan Province. Dali is a city in southwestern Yunnan of China, on the shores of Erhai Lake. Its history dates back to the Nanzhao Kingdom(8th century). The walled old city, from the Ming dynasty, contains traditional houses and towers from the Bai minority. What to see in Jade Water Village

The Baisha Ancient Music and the Lijiang Dongjing Ancient Music are the two eyes of Naxi ancient music. They are “the living fossil of music.” 

The Dongba Culture Heritage Base of Jade Water Village retains the traditional and simple style of the Naxi people and complements the beautiful natural landscape around it. It truly reflects the traditional concept of “the harmonious development of man and nature” and the true meaning of Dongba culture. There are three famous Dongba masters in the scenic area to conduct daily affairs. There are several Dongba students studying Dongba Scripture, Dongba Dance, Dongba Sacrificial Ceremony and Dongba Art in Jade Water Village. On the 5th March of the lunar calendar, Dongbas in the entire Naxi area gather in Jade Water Village and hold the annual Dongba Shiluo Conference in the Dongba Shiluo Temple.

Dongba Culture

First, in order to improve the inheritance of Dongba culture, the Dongba Shiluo Hall, the places to sacrifice heaven, the guardian (natural god), and the ritual winds were built. 

The second is the Dongba Cultural Relics Exhibition. The Dongba Cultural Relics Exhibition Hall has been built in the scenic area. 

The third is the production and life display of the ancient Naxi people, the Dongba Paper Mill, which displays the ancient papermaking method. The Dongba Brewery, which displays the ancient winemaking method. The weaving life with the ancient weaving method, and a large number of traditional production and daily necessities. And there are two old masters who have been living here for a long time, and they have formed a living folk show.

The fourth is the Naxi traditional song and dance performance. There are 30 Naxi traditional song and dance exhibition teams in the scenic spot. They use the representative traditional songs and dances that retain the authenticity of the Naxi people as the guiding ideology. They collect, organize and rehearse more than 30 song and dance programs for the tourists. Take the No. 8 bus to the Jinjia market (the fare is 5), and transfer to the minivan (the fare is 5 yuan) to go to Jade Water Village.

Lijiang Jade Water Village is 12 kilometers away from Lijiang County, so it only takes 30 yuan to take taxi from Lijiang City.

Brief Introduction

Lijiang Sanyi International Airport(IATA：LJG，ICAO：ZPLJ) is located in Qihe Town(七河镇), Gucheng District, Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, China. It is a civil transport airport, belonging to national first-class port. It is the “civilized airport” in southwest China, and is the second largest airport in Yunnan, the hub airport of Yunnan regional tourism, as well as is the third international airport after Kunming Changshui International Airport and Xishuangbanna Gasa International Airport. According to information on the airport’s official website in August 2017, the airfield area is 4D, the runway is 3000 meters long, and it can provide Boeing 767, Airbus 330 and other planes for takeoffs and landings. There are 19 aircraft stands, 33000 square meters of domestic terminal buildings and 5300 square meters of international terminal buildings. The airport is about 30 kilometers away from Lijiang urban area.

Construction and Development of the Airport

1. Lijiang Airport was constructed from 1992, and was finished the construction in 1995. It was officially put into operation in July, 1995.

2. Lijiang Airport used to be reconstructed and expended in 1998, but it still can not meet the needs of development. At the end of 2007, the new extension project of Lijiang Airport began. In 2011, after reconstruction and extension, the grade of Lijiang airport was upgraded from 4C to 4D, with 19 aircrafts stands and 8 boarding bridges with a runway length of 3000 meters. The building area of the domestic terminal is 33000 square meters and the international terminal is 5300 square meters.

3. At present, the third reconstruction and expansion is underway. On December 7, 2016, Lijiang Sanyi International Airport officially launched the third phase of the reconstruction and expansion project. In the future, the airport runway will be extended to 3500 meters, the number of aircraft stands will be increased to 60, the parallel taxiways and related platform liaison roads, new terminal buildings and parking aprons, as well as related auxiliary facilities will be constructed. In 2020, the third reconstruction and expansion project will be completed and the facilities will be put into use, the total investment scale is of 5 billion.

There is only one departure point of airport bus in Lijiang Downtown, that is Lantian(Blue Sky) Hotel, which is about 1 kilometers from the large water wheel of Lijiang Ancient Town.

2. Taxi

According to information on airport official website in August 2017, taking a taxi from Lijiang Sanyi International Airport to Lijiang Downtown is generally 80-100 yuan. The entrances of the ancient town include south gate, Zhongyi market(忠义市场), Wenchang Palace(文昌宫) and large water wheel.

3. By Bus

Departing from Lijiang Ancient Town, you can take No.27 bus to the airport. Getting on the bus at Nanmenjie stop(南门街站), getting off at Jichang Lukou stop(机场路口站), totally 28 stops, 1.5 hours.

About Chenghai Lake

Situated in the middle of Yongsheng County, Yunnan Province, Chenghai Lake which is also called Heiwuhai is wide in the north and south but narrow in the opposite direction. It is the second largest freshwater lake in western Yunnan as well as one of the three major lakes in the world. Geologically, it is a kind of Diastrophic Lake formed in the middle Cenozoic tertiary period about 12 million years ago when the graben shaped because of the Himalayan orogeny, and hence the water accumulated into the graben to form the lake.

There are three natural sulphur mineral springs in the south bank of Chenghai Lake.  The clean in the north side is regarded as the ideal resort for natural bathing and the plateau training place for aquatic sports. In 1988, Chenghai Lake became the world’s most famous “Blue Treasure Lake” when people successfully bred artificial spirulina using the fresh water in the lake.
The most striking thing about Chenghai Lake is the rare natural spirulina which is a unique in Yunnan and even China. At present, there are only three watersheds in the world that grow such kind of unique algae, one is the Tankers Lake in Mexico, the other is Lake Chad in Africa, and the third is Chenghai Lake in Yongsheng County. In 1985, Yunnan university “alpine lake ecological investigation” first discovered Chenghai spirulina groups. Every summer, Chenghai Lake will turn blue-green with a special fragrance, commonly known as “Xiangshuimian”（香水面）, which is a special consor product called “algal bloom” of the natural spirulina.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a mountain massif near Lijiang. It is the southernmost glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. There are 13 peaks all together and the group of mountains stretches about 35 kilometers from north to south. The highest peak is named Shanzidou at an altitude of 5,596m. On the eastern side of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, there is a deep valley where the Yangtze River runs. Tiger Leaping Gorge is in the northern part of the valley and Yuhu Village Is located in the south of the valley. Travelers can see Jade Dragon Snow Mountain over Tiger Leaping Gorge, Yuhu Village, Black Dragon Pool Park and other locations.

Haba Snow Mountain

Haba Snow Mountain is a mountain in southeast of Shangri-La, rising above the northwest side of Tiger Leaping Gorge, opposite off Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, with the highest peak of 5,396 m. It boasts glaciers, lakes and waterfalls and contains one of the best preserved nature reserves. Each year from June to August, millions of azaleas are in blossom. To avoid the rainy season, the best time to travel Haba Snow Mountain is mid-March to June, mid-September to mid-December

Why is Dongba Valley so special?

The Dongba Valley is home and livelihood of Naxi people. Traditional houses of Naxi and other peoples are open to visit. Dongba Valley is perched at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and about 15 kilometers southwards to the Lijiang Old Town. It is a rift valley cracked during the ancient orogenic movement period. With the total length of 9 kilometers, Dongba Valley is an uncanny workmanship by nature. It is also the only way to enter the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area.

Dongba Valley has turned over a mysterious page to the world. Apart form the steep cliffs and caves; it is like an insular paradise for the Naxi people. Jiangren Street
Upon entered the Dongba Valley, visitors will see a large plaza and a long and narrow street behind it. Girls and boys are dancing and singing in the plaza in order to welcome the each tourist’s coming. As the main street of Dongba Valley, Jiangren Street is an original trading land with numerous shops scattered. Jewelries, fur and medicines can be found at anywhere.

Linbo Bridge
Located at the end of the Jiangren Street, Linbo Bridge is a suspension bridge beneath where runs a beautiful lake. Standing on the bridge, you are lucky to appreciate the distant mist-covered water and flickering Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Dongba text can be seen in many scenic spots in Lijiang. Used by Naxi people, it has been rated as the only living hieroglyph in the world. Dongba scripture, made from more than 1,400 dongba words has been remained. Religion of geomantic omen, lifestyle and culture of Naxi people can be found in the Dongba scripture. It has a profound collectible value that there are less than dozen countries reserves.

The Road to Heaven
To the Jade Water Village – en route, is “The Road to Heaven”. It is a tranquil spot, its main feature is a long, colorful floor mural, showing the three realms: hell, earth and heaven, of the Naxi religion. On the right, sculptures represent good spirits and gods; evil spirits are depicted on the left.

At the top of the road is a small hermitage and a set of temples with huge Buddha and Naxi Guides statues, but the favourite is the walk back down through the peace garden. This is a set of glades and paths filled with wind chimes. The temples and garden face the holy Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain

The Jade Dragon Snow Mountains (玉龙雪山) are a small group of peaks close to the city of Lijiang. The nearest slope is only about 30 kilometers north of the Dayan Ancient City District, and the mountain can be clearly seen from the Black Dragon Pool next to the ancient district.

Lijiang Ancient Town

The beauty of the Old City is also due to the integrity of geographical nature and harmony. In 30 km northwest to the Old City lies the unconquerable Yulong Snow Mountain of 5,596 m and the relics of glacier in the Quaternary Period. The spring is divided into three branches to flow into the Old City relatively from east, middle and west.

Black Dragon Pool

Black Dragon Pool (also Heilongtan), or Jade Spring(Yuquan) Park is the main headwater of the Yushui River which goes through the Old Town. People believe that the gods of the Naxi people are living in the chestnut woods, beside the mouth of springs, behind the carved doors and below the bridges. The springs come from the god-protected mountains and gather in this place and finally form the dragon pool. Then water goes down a waterfall and becomes the Yuhe River, pouring life to the Old Town.

The Dongba culture is a most inclusive term referring mainly to the language and scriptures. The Dongba language is actually composed of 1,400 picture-like characters and symbols that are still used by Dongbas, researchers and artists of the culture. Brief Introduction

Dali-Lijiang railway(DaLi大丽 for short) is 164 kilometers in length, starting from Dali in the south and reaching Lijiang in the north. It is an important part of the Yunnan-Tibet railway project. It began construction in 2004 and was originally scheduled to be opened to traffic by the end of June 2008. However, due to the influence of geological conditions, engineering construction and design alteration, the operation was delayed to the end of 2009.

According to the plan, the railway would serve as an important section of the Yunnan-Tibet railway, northward connecting the Lixiang Railway(Lijiang-Shangri-La) which began to build in June 2009 and extending to Tibet; Eastward connecting the Guangda Railway(Guangtong-Dali) to Kunming; Westward connecting Darui Railway(Dali-Ruili), extending from Ruili and Tengchong to Myanmar, and connecting Burma with Southeast Asian countries to form a railway network, it is an important part of the international corridor construction for southwest China.

How to Get to Dali from Lijiang

There are airport, railway station and bus stations both in Dali and Lijiang. Since the distance between Lijiang and Dali is not far, there is no direct flight. A stopover to change plane will spend more time and money, so it is not recommended to take plane.

At Lijiang Bus Station, traveler can take the bus to Dali. There are at least 20 daily buses departing from Lijiang to Dali, ranging from 07:10-19:00. With a distance of about 202 kilometers, the journey is about 3-3.5 hours.

Dali and Lijiang are two hot destinations in Yunnan Province. Dali is a city in southwestern Yunnan of China, on the shores of Erhai Lake. Its history dates back to the Nanzhao Kingdom(8th century). The walled old city, from the Ming dynasty, contains traditional houses and towers from the Bai minority. Beyond the old city stand the Three Pagodas of Chong Sheng Temple, founded in the 9th century. Lijiang, a city in the northwest part of China’s Yunnan province, is inhabited by the Naxi and several other minority groups. Lijiang Ancient Town is compose of cobblestone streets, canals and Central Market Square with shops and restaurants. There are famous Black Dragon Pool and views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.  

Travel to Lijiang from Dali by Train

In this part, how to get to Lijiang from Dali by train will be introduced. The transportation between Dali to Lijiang by train involves two railway stations, Dali Railway Station and Lijiang Railway Station. Taking train is more cost-effective than long-distance bus and other vehicles. There are two daily direct trains, but direct trains from Dali to Lijiang will stop at Heqing Station for 2-3 minutes. In 2-3 minutes, the train will continue to Lijiang. Heqing Station is just a intermediate station between two stations. The whole journey is about 2.5-3 hours, and the price ranges from 34-328.5 yuan. You can choose different classes according to your need, like hard seat, soft seat, soft sleeper and compartment.

About Longquan Temple

Longquan temple（龙泉寺）also known as Sam Sing Kung Chinese Temple（三圣宫）which was built in Ming dynasty and rebuilt in 1983, is located in Shuhe Ancient Town, 7 km northwest of Lijiang Ancient Town. Longquan temple gets its name from Longquan Lake near the temple, and the temple is built along the lake. Overlooking the lake from the second floor of Dajue Palace（大觉宫）, tourists appreciate the pleasant view. Longquan Lake more clear than that in Lijiang Ancient Town runs along the river through the ancient streets to directly serve as the villagers’ drinking water. Longquan Temple is a good place for the Naxi （纳西）family to have delicious dinner and spring outing because of its quiet environment.

The temple is a quadrangle courtyard while the north sits the main hall, enshrining the God of Rain（龙王） in Chinese Mythology inside. The west hall is consecrate the Goddess of Mercy（观音）, the south tower is dedicated to the father cobbler, Sun Bin, and the east building blocks straight into the water. With the corridors all the three sides of the temple, visitors to overlook the charming view around the temple. In ancient times, some scholars often visited to enjoy the glorious full moon in the moonlit night here, and hence came the “Longmen full moon”（龙门望月）.

 The temple is painted with Ming dynasty murals with the content of Buddhism. The picture is different from Baisha Frescos（白沙壁画） in Dabaoji Palace（大宝积宫）， Baisha Ancient Town. It is one of the treasures of the Ming dynasty Lijiang fresco because of its unique features.

Structure of Longquan Temple

The construction structure with the four upturning eaves up is symmetrical and harmonious using a wooden brackets structure. The forehead pillar is decorated with all kinds of lively birds and animals. Shuhe Ancient Town is very similar to Lijiang Ancient Town, which is centered on a quadrate square in the whole layout. The water originates from of Longquan Lake going through the streets.

What to See in Longquan Temple

In the village, flows the clear water from several springs all year round, across the village. The willows on both side of the river droop down and touch the water surface gently. The black tiles and white walls are covered with green shade, showing visitors beautiful scenery. Walking from the stone bridge in the west of the village the stream of the spring, along strange stone was made, visitors and see a fantastic rock peak and a clear spring behind the rock.

Near the pond there situates a pavilion whose name is actually Longquan Temple. The structure is exquisite and unique with the upturning eaves and the beautiful and generous ornamentation sculpture. There full of wide variety of flowers and trees in the courtyard with pleasant fragrant. Every spring, various kinds of flowers blossom continually. That’s really wonderful scene. Traveling here, tourists can view the whole building, and the scenery of Longquan Lake, which gives people a comfortable and happy feeling.

How to Get to Longquan Temple

1. Take the 11 bus to Shuhe Ancient Town and walk 100 meters northward to the temple.
2. Take a taxi from Dayan Ancient Town for 20Yuan.
3. Take the shuttle bus from Lijiang Ancient Town to Shuhe Ancient Town for 2 Yuan.　

Best Time to Visit

The peak period for visiting Shuhe Ancient Town is from May to October. Actually, Shuhe is worth visiting during any season, so if you do not want to experience a crowded scene, avoiding that period might be a good option.

Longquan Temple Travel Tips

Altitude Sickness

The altitude is about 2,400 meters or about 7,800 feet. Some people may get some altitude sickness. So take it easy the first day or two.

What to Pack

Travel light when strolling in the old town. Bring a camera with you that you can take photos along the way. Sunlight is very strong in Lijiang, wear sun protection such as hats, sunglasses and use sun block, etc.

Entertainment

Do not miss the bars in Lijang. They are a part of life. The bars in Shuhe Old Town is more quieter than Lijiang old town. 

Dining

In Shuhe Old Town, some small restaurants are also surprising. The famous local dishes includes Chickpeas Bean Jelly, Lijiang Salted Pork Ribs, Naxi barbecue and other Lijiang delicacies.

Hotels

Just like Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe Old Town has many high-qualify hotels or hostels for you to choose from. The recommended hotels are Banyan Tree Lijiang, Lijiang Conifer Lishui Yangguang Hotel, etc.

Other Tips

1. If you plan to travel to Lijiang during the peak tourist season (Spring Festival, May Day, Summer holiday, and National Day holiday), be sure to reserve a room in advance.

2. There used to have carriages getting in and out of this town, so be careful.

3. It is best to wear cloth shoes or sneakers when walking in the old town, because they are all slabstone path, it is easy to twist your feet with high heels.

4.Take rain gear when you visit in the rainy season, and the slabstone path are slippery after the rain. Pay attention to that.
