Nujiang Grand Canyon（怒江大峡谷） is located in the area of three parallel rivers（三江并流） in Hengduan Mountain(横断山脉）. The Yunnan section is more than 300 kilometers with an average depth of 2000 meters. The deepest section is 3500 meters and located in Bingzhongluo(丙中洛） area of Gaoligong mountain（高黎贡山）, Yunnan Province, which is called “Oriental Grand Canyon”.

On both sides of the Nujiang River(怒江） are Goligong mountain（高黎贡山） and Biluo snow mountain（碧罗雪山）. There are more than ten ethnic minorities living in the valley, such as Lisu（傈僳族）, Dulong（独龙族）, Nu（怒族） and Pumi（普米族）. Due to the lack of people, the ancient folk customs are still preserved up to now. During the Spring Festival, the “bath hall meeting” is the most lively time in the canyon. Young men and women from the surrounding villages gather together to sing and dance all night.

The Dulong (also known as Drung) ethnic group is one of the smallest ethnic groups in China. With a total population of about 5,816 (data from the census in 2000), the Dulong people mainly live in the Dulong River Valley in the Gongshan Dulong and Nu Autonomous County in north-western Yunnan Province.

Salween river, called Nujiang river in China. Day 1 Dali-Laomudeng Village

In the morning, we set off for Nujiang River. We started to explore the paradise road – Nujiang Grand Canyon from Lujiang dam to the expressway. The itinerary is quite rich. Along the way, we can enjoy the unique scenery of subtropical mountain. we first stop at Nujiang tourist service center, visit panorama building and sand table of three parallel rivers. Then, we will drive to Liuku, the capital of Nujiang Prefecture, through the deep part of the Grand Canyon, we will see Gaoligong Mountain, Biluo snow mountain, bazaar, flowing spring and waterfall and Lisu village. We also can see long distant view of Laohutiao canyon and magic Feilai stone along the way. Finally, enter Laomudeng village and stay in the characteristic Nu folk house here. Visit laomudeng Catholic Church freely, taste the special Nu food for dinner and feel the national enthusiasm.

Day 2 Laomudeng Village-Bingzhongluo Town

After breakfast, we will drive to Gongdangshen mountain. Today, we will change view to overlook the first bend of Nujiang River. Then go down and stop on my way to overlook the panorama of Bingzhongluo. In a sunny day, we could also enjoy the Gawa Gapu snow mountain (5128m) of the highest point of Gaoligong mountain. Then we took a leisurely look at the shooting of Puhua temple.

At the right time, we will cross the ancient road Shimen checkpoint to visit autumn bucket and see the Pearl of Nujiang River with our own eyes. And then we could go to the nujiang river to experience the Nujiang Grand Canyon Rafting with yours equipment.

Day 4 Bingzhongluo town-Dulongjiang river

Depart for the mysterious “Dulongjiang River” after breakfast. Appreciation along the way: primitive forest, hundreds of mountains, bamboo forest, you can overlook Biluo snow mountain and Dangdanlika mountain, Nanmowang mountain, etc. Dulongjiang River is recognized as the “Natural Museum of wild plants” by experts. It is one of the most complete areas of primitive ecological preservation in China, where there lived the ancient and closes ancient ethnic–Dulong Nationality . We will go deep along the Dulongjiang River Grand Canyon until the north end Longyuan village, trying to cross the rattan bridge all the way, exploring the original villages, exploring the oldest Dulong ethnic group and looking for the mysterious “tattoo on women’s face” of Dulong ethnic group. The custom of tattoo has disappeared for a long time. At present, there are less than 25 women living in different villages in Dulongjiang River, Nujiang and The youngest one is over 70 years old. That will be our luck to see them and we should be calmness if can’t see them.

Day 5 Dulongjiang river-Gongshan county

We live in Dulongjiang River Township and go to the lower reaches of Dulongjiang River [Maku] after breakfast. The township government at that time was located here after liberation. Burmese whose living on the border often come market here. Dulongjiang River also enters Myanmar from here. Along the way to see the original scenery of Dulongjiang River Canyon, there are no specific scenic spots here, all are beautiful scenery along the way, so you can’t miss it.

We will also go to the border to look for [No.41 border monument]. If the weather is good, we will walk to Haba waterfall which is called the most beautiful waterfall in Nujiang River. Leave Dulongjiang River in time and go to Gongshan county to check in.

Day 6 Gongshan county-Liuku town

In the morning, left Gongshan county and go south along the river to experience the Lisu People’s rope skating (the rope skating is a very representative and primitive transportation in Nujiang, which is still widely used up to now).

Later, we will arrive at the Zaotanghui site where there are many attractive natural hot springs. Every year, from the second to the sixth day of the Spring Festival, Lisu People who live nearby will bring their children to the hot spring for a dip. we will arrange you to enjoy the real natural hot spring bath here. Remember to bring your swimsuit!

In the evening, we will arrive at Liuku, the capital of Nujiang Autonomous Prefecture. You can freely walk around the city (Xiangyang bridge, gudukou) after you check in the hotel.

Day 7 Liuku town-Dali

Day 1 Arrival in Lijiang

We’ll begin our journey to Lijiang, which is the travel highlight of Yunnan. Our local guide will meet us in Lijiang airport. And then we will be transferred to our hotel. The rest time will be free in Lijiang Old Town.

Day 2 Lijiang

We’ll head for Shuhe Old Town, which is the relic of the Tea-Horse Trading Caravan from bank of Mekong River to India via Tibet. We are planning to walk from LongQuan (Drangon Spring) in Shuhe Old Town to Baisha Village, we will visit the the Naxi family and Baisha Mural in Baisha village. Lunch at “Just Here Restaurant” in Baisha Street.

After lunch drive back to Lijiang and visit the Wangu Pagoda on the top of the Lion Hill, here you will have a wonderful panoramic view of Lijiang Old Town. We will walk down from the Lion Hill to Mu Emperor’s Palace which is the local chieftain’s former residence.

Attend the Naxi Orchestral and Show in Dongba Palace in the Lijiang Old Town at night.

Day 3 Lijiang- Qiaotou- Halfway Guesthouse

At 6:00, drive to Qiaotou Town, it takes 2 hours on the trip. Your hiking trip starts from here, the 28 zigzagging turns will be a real test. From the top of “28 turns” on the high path further uphill to a place of altitude above 3000m, you can have a view of the panorama of the entire Gorge. The go pass Tea Horse Guest House (5 hours) and arrive at Halfway Guesthouse (2500m) to finish today’s trekking. The total trekking route is 26 km, and it takes about 6-8 hours.

Day 4 Halfway Guesthouse- Tina’s- Middle Rapids- Walnut Grove- Daju

In the early morning, continue hiking to Tina’s Inn (2 hours) after another hour walking down the steep cliff to the bank of Jinsha River to the Middle Gorge (Middle Hutiao or Middle Rapids), worship the dangerours shoal of “Starriness”, it is the most narrow part of the gorge, where a tiger can easily jump over the Jinsha River. Lunch at the Middle Rapids or where it is more suitable or convenient.

There are 3 roads from the Middle Rapids back up to the Gorge to Walnut Grove. One ends at the left of Woody No.2 (using the main road for tourist coaches, Y15 for “road crossing” fee). Another ends near Teacher Zhang’s Guesthouse (through Tianti which takes 2 hours, Y5 “road crossing” fee), take the third which go through ends near Chateau Woody where you see a sign advertising Xia Yin Gu’s guide service. Take the third one which goes through Yixiantian but takes 3 hours as the scenery is the most spectacular in the entire Tiger Leaping Gorge. Notice that on this third road close to the rapids there is a very dangerous section of a few dozen meters long called “Tiny Sky” (and you need to pay between Y2-5 depending on the condition to cross that). Note at the rapids itself, there are two places charging “road crossing” fees of 15Y each: one for a small bridge leading to the first road, the other for crossing the wooden plank to the Middle Tiger Leaping Rock.

From Halfway Guesthouse to Middle Hutiao or Rapids will take between 3 to 4 hours. Then climb up the gorge to Walnut Grove (Woody’s Guesthouse) using either the Tianti or Yixiantian route. Depending on how tired, choose the one to suit on the day. So from Middle Hutiao to Walnut Grove will take 2 or 3 hours and hence the total for the day from Halfway Guesthouse to Walnut Grove will be about 5 to 6 hours.

Day 5 Daju- Jade Dragon Snow Mountain- Lijiang

The largest one has a root girth of 2.53M, a base diameter is 0.81M and a height 12m . The other two were 0.76M in diameter. No less than 1500 ancient tea trees with a diameter of 0.2m.

After breakfast, driving to Bixi township. The forest coverage rate of Bixi township is 51% with good ecological and there is a beautiful and magical sunrise of Phoenix Mountain. And then go to Longshan village, There have 300-500 ancient tea trees here . Ancient tea trees grow on the ridge of the field and scattered. A few ancient tea trees are distributed in front of the house and behind the house. The plants of ancient tea trees grow moderately and all have many ages. And then drive to Nanjian , stop to visit Nanjian Tulin Tea Factory for few hours.

After lunch, continue to drive to visit Weishan Old Town. Weishan old town was the cradle of Nanzhao kingdom(a kindom established by Yi Minority), the history can be traced back to 7th century. Its a very nice old town and not touristic. It was a important town on the ancient tea and horse road. You will also enjoy the traditional Bai people’s building design.

Day 9 Dali

Sightseeing and Activities: Buddhist temple scenery, Xiaguantuocha tea company.

After an early breakfast we picked you up to the Da Li museum curator and drove into the mountains towards a Buddhist temple which we then hiked up to. The head monk graciously served us tea which was processed on the premises and steeped with water from the nearby mountain streams. We spent some time exploring the grounds of the temple, wandering through the dense forest with Da Li city far below.
Back on the bus we drove along the waterfront on our way to the famous Xiaguantuocha tea company. We were given a rare tour of their museum and shown aged puer tea cakes worth over $10k each! Xiaguantuocha produces 70k tons of Puer a year, with only 3k of this being exported. We were told the largest portion of these exported puer tea cakes are sold to French pharmacies where they are believed to reduce high blood pressure.

Day 10 Departure from Dali

In the morning, about 4 hours drive from Kunming to Mojiang. After arrive at Mojiang County, have lunch and then drive to visit Mojiang River Tropic of Cancer Mark Park and Mojiang International Twin Culture Park, experience the unique astronomy wonders on Tropic of Cancer, and explore the biology twin attributes on this land.

After that, drive to Ning’er to visit Ning’er Nakeli Tea-Horse Road Relay Station, to experience the custom of ancient tea-horse road.

Day 3 Ninger-Kunlu Mountain-Puer

We will drive to Kunlu mountain in early morning to visit Imperial family’s tea plantation. Kunlu mountain is a branch of Wuliang Mountain, It is located 31 kilometers north of Pu’er County, between 1410 meters and 2271 meters above sea level. The mountains are green with towering ancient trees, and the altitude of highest peak is 2271 meters. Kunlu mountain is located between Ninger county and Jinggu county with high mountains, cloud cover and abundant rainfall. Among the ancient tea trees, there are towering ancient trees that have been preserved for many years and they are also one of the only original forests in Pu’er City. The characteristics of Pu’er tea in Kunlu mountain are concerned by tea lovers. Because it has thousands of acres of ancient tea garden for thousands of years, it is called “Tea Museum” and it is said to be the royal tea garden of Qing Dynasty.

After Lunch, Head for the Puer Tea Expo Garden(中华普洱茶博览苑) for tea-leaf picking experience and learn how Puer tea is processed. This garden shows the origination, history, development, plantation, making process, and tasting of Puer tea.

Day 4 Puer-Jiangcheng-Yiwu

Niuluohe Tea Plantation is located in the south of Jiangcheng County, Puer City, Yunnan Province. It borders Laos and covers an area of more than 100,000 mu. It is surrounded by virgin forests and produces pollution-free tea. It is the ideal environment for organic tea. Niuluohe tea industry was established in September 1987. The existing ecological tea garden covers an area of 18,000 mu (including 5,000 mu of cloned tea gardens), 1,000 mu of coffee gardens, more than 8,000 mu of economic forests, more than 4,000 tea workers, and an annual output of 3,500 tons of tea. It is a professional tea enterprise integrating production, processing and sales. In the past 20 years, Niuluohe tea industry has carefully created the brand of “Niuluohe” and “Jiangcheng Yueyuan Tea”, which are jointly watched by the tea industry.

In the late afternoon, we will drive to Yiwu.

Day 5 Yiwu-Menglun-Jinghong

Today, you will head for Yiwu Town, a small town once boomed due to tea trade in the history, see the old part of town and the stele erected in Qing Dynasty that recorded the trade situation at that time. It is a main planting area of traditional Puer Tea. Visit the Yiwu Old Town, then pay a visit to local families that are still producing Pu’er Tea the traditional way. Afterwards, visit the tea mountains and plantation.

After that, visit Menglun Botanical Garden. Menglun Botanical Garden is in Menglun town of Menglai county around 80km away from Jinghong city, Menglun tropical botanical garden is the largest tropical botanical garden in China. It was established in 1959 by Chinese famous botanists including Prof. Cai Xitao, who devoted all his life to related scientific research with remarkable achievements. The garden boasts more than 4000 species of tropical plants covering an area of 900 hectares, quite a few of which are rare elsewhere, forming a colorful botanical landscape.

Day 6 Jinghong-Mount Nannuo-Menghai-Jingmai

In the early morning, we will drive to Mount Nannuo, see ancient tea plantation aged over 800 years of Aini people, who have been engaged in tea-planting here for centuries. Visit their village and taste roasted tea they prepared in unique way. Through chat we may discover how much Aini people rely on tea. Move on to Menghai, pay a visit to small tea workshopin the village to learn about how fresh tea leaves are processed. Further transfer into mountainous area to Bada, do some hiking across forest to worship the King of Wild Tea Tree aged over 1700 years.

Then move to Menghai, pay a visit to small tea workshop to learn about how fresh tea leaves are processed.

Continue driving to Jingmai for overnight.

Day 7 Jingmai

In morning, enjoy a hike in the ancient tea plantation of Aileng Mountain (艾冷山) to know the old story about the platation and the relationship between Bulang people and Puer Tea. The Aileng Mountain is named by the leader of Bulang People and you can get a better understanding of the origination of Puer Tea by this hiking tour.

And then drive to a local family of Jingmai, enjoy the specialty of Jingmai Mountain–the tea meal.

In afternoon, drive to a Lahu village–Laodabao Village (老达保拉祜族村寨). It is the only believer of Christian among Lahu villages in China owing to the industrious preacher. The preacher also brought latin letters, music and church to them. Laodabao village is also the only Lahu village which owns their own writing language. You can appreciate their primitive wooden houses and solemn church in the village.

Day 8 Jingmai-Shuangjiang-Mengku

In the afternoon we will make it to the Mengku Daxueshan Virgin Forest, home to the 10, 000 Acre Wild Ancient Tea Tree Garden. Day 9 Mengku-Lincang

Day 10 Lincang-Yunxian-Fengqing

After that, drive to Fengqing in the late afternoon.

Day 11 Fengqing-Xiaowan-Lushi

In the morning, drive to Jianchuan County. Visit Shibaoshan Mountain .The most prominent sight at ShibaoShan is the Stone Bell Temple with its 139, well preserved stone carvings. These magnificent stone carvings date as far back as 1300 years to the once powerful Nanzhao Kingdom during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Explore the ancient temple complex including Baoxiang Temple, Haiyun Temple, Shizhong Temple and the Ancient Grottoes. If you are lucky enough, you also can see a lot of wild monkey group around Baoxiang Temple.

Then visit Shaxi Old Town. Shaxi is the last remaining ancient market town of its kind on the Tea & Horse Caravan Trail. This trail is a trading route that connected Tibet, Sichuan, and Yunnan to countries in southeast Asia, also called the Southern Silk Road.The World Monuments Fund (WMF) has listed Shaxi as one of the 100 most endangered sites in the world in 2001.

In the late afternoon, drive to Lijiang.

Day 15 Lijiang

Enjoy the sunrise of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Lijiang Ancient Town in the morning, drive about 30KM to Ganhaizi Meadow(3100M), you will take the sightseeig bus for a short visiting through the Baishuihe River in Blue Moon Valey, take the chairlift up to visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The cableway will be arranged according to the condition of the mountain. You will hike around 1 hours in the original forest in Spruce Meadow (3200M).

After lunch, enjoy Impression Lijiang Show which is A Spectacular Show with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the Backdrop, directed by the famous director Zhang Yimou.
Impression Lijiang is a magnificent outdoor singing and dancing performance demonstrating the tradition and lifestyle of the local ethnic people. It is another creation of famous Chinese director Zhang Yimou.The show is innovatively staged in the morning and afternoon, at 3,100 meters (10,100 feet) above sea level with Jade Snow Mountain as the breathtaking backdrop.

Stroll through Baisha Old Town, which is an enchanting traditional Naxi style old town. Visit the Baisha Murals about 600 years old, which is one part of the World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO 1997. Pay a visit to Baisha Holiday Resort(丽江白沙别院 in Chinese),which is featured with the traditional Naxi style architecture as well as the nice view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from the balcony.If time permits,enjoy a cup of Puer tea in the courtyard.

A challenging but very rewarding high altitude hike that begins at the base of Cangshan Mountain at just over 2000 metres above sea level and takes you far up the mountain to a group of pristine alpine ponds located at 3750 metres (12,300 feet)! We camp right next to the ponds and enjoy an epic sunset before continuing up the mountain the next morning to the summit at an elevation of nearly 4100 metres (13,450 feet)! This is a 20 km hike with a total elevation gain of approximately 1700 metres on the first day and 300 metres on the second day, so you need to be in strong physical condition. Serious hikers willing to challenge themselves will be rewarded with spectacular scenery, stunning views and a real sense of accomplishment!

Day 1 Hike to black dragon and Camping

We will meet at the front of West Gate of Dali Old Town (大理古城西门) and it will take us 9 km north to a small farming village at the foot of Cang Mountain （苍山）called Heyang Village河阳村 (literally “Sun Crane Village”). The hike begins at the top of Heyang Village at an elevation altitude about 2050 metres. From start, it’s a short walk past scenic terraced fields and then up into the foothills of Cang Mountain（苍山）. Once into the hills, we will cross through a tea plantation and have an overlooking view of Heyang Village and Erhai Lake(洱海）.

After hiking along the donkey trail about 2 hours, we emerge into a small plateau at an altitude of approximately 3100 meters (10,170 feet), which offers spectacular panoramic views of the entire Dali region. We rest here for a while , having lunch and taking views.

After lunch we continue hiking up the mountain and well reach a large plateau at approximately altitude 3750 meters about 2 hours. After a short walk through the forest we arrive at a pond located at the base of a huge cliff face. This high altitude pond is truly a place of serene natural beauty which surrounded by wind-swept pine trees and massive rhododendron bushes.

Our campsite in the right of the ponds and in a beautiful, well-sheltered spot surrounded by pine trees. We pitch our tents, prepare dinner and start a fire as the sun goes down. Don’t forget to bring a bottle of wine or spirits with you too; there’s no better place in Dali to relax with a drink and watch the sunset!

Day 2 Hike to the Summit

After breakfast, we pack up camp and get ready to head for the summit. Cang mountain(苍山） actually has 19 summits and one of them is directly behind our campsite. At the altitude about 4050 meters ,the summit is about 300 vertical meters above our campsite and need take us about 1.5 hours to reach.

There has a large pond in the middle of the plateau, under the summit with altitude 3900 meters. Start from the pond, we hike to the top of the mountain along the slopes of grass (or snow).

Depending on the conditions on the mountain (for example, snow or no snow), it takes about 3-4 hours to back down the foot of mountain in Heyang village. Our driver will be waiting for us in the village and drive us back to Dali Ancient Town.

Important Notice:

Please wear the warm clothes and dress accordingly because it will snow at the altitude over 3000 meters during November to May. I recommended you to choose suitable climbing boots, warm jackets, warm socks and walking sticks when you hiking.

Take a morning flight to Tengchong, be met by your local guide and drive to visit the Rehai Hot Spring. Tengchong Rehai Hot Spring Scenic Area, commonly known as Rehai, is located in Qingshui Township, southwest of Tengchong County, about 10 kilometers from Tengchong County. There are more than 80 hot springs in the this area, offering the water over 90 °C. You can see the hot springs screaming everywhere, making the scenic area foggy. Rehai Hot Spring provides soft water in high temperature and high salinity, which are beneficial to the health. It is the best place for geothermal therapy in China.

After visiting, drive to the hotel for checking in.

Day 2 Tengchong

Jiasa(嘎洒 in Chinese) is a small town in Xinping County, Yunnan Province. ‘Jiasa’ in Dai language means the street near the beach. Yuanjiang River flows beside the town and brought it fertile land and warm weather. Jiasa is famous for its special minorty group, Huayao Dai. It is a branch of Dai People, and keeps its own features. Huayao Dai People don’t live in the bamboo buildings as Dai People do, they live in a speicla kind of cottage called ÍÁÕÆ·¿(house made of soil). Women wear tattoos on their arms, and they like chewing pinang to dye their teeth black. Tattoos and black teeth are the simble of beauty in traditional Huayao Dai women’s eyes.

After lunch, continue the driving to Zhenyuan Yi, Hani and Lahu Autonomous County. It is 80 Kilometers driving from the downtown to Jiujia Town where you will visit the Qianjiazhai Ancient Tea Trees Growing Area in Ailaoshan Mountain Nature Reserve.

Day 3 Jiujia Town-Zhenyuan-Puer

Visit the Qianjiazhai Ancient Tea Trees Growing Area in Ailaoshan Mountain Nature Reserve in the morning; then drive to Puer City.
–Qianjiazhai Ancient Tea Growing Area is located in Jiujia Town of Zhenyuan Yi, Hani, and Lahu autonomous county in Puer City. It lies in the western part of Puerh City and the middle section of the southwestern Yunnan Ailao and Wuliang mountain chains. Within the area’s border is a string of mountains. In fact, mountainous terrain makes up 97.7% of the land. The total area of Zhenyuan County is 4,109.38 km2. The topography is complex, high in the north and lower in the south. The highest point is 3,137 meters above sea level, while the lowest is 774 meters. The county seat of Enle lies at an elevation of 1,080 meters.

Zhenyuan has a subtropical climate, with a yearly average temperature of 18.5°C, 1,284.8mm of annual rainfall, and an average relative humidity of 78%. The Babian, Amo, and Mengtong rivers flow through the area. It was an important stopping point on the Old Tea Horse Road. In 1990, Zhenyuan Yi, Hani, and Lahu Autonomous County was formed.

In 1998, county-level administrative offices were moved from the town of Anban to Enle. The Jiujia township village of Qianjia contains a record in the Guinness Book of World Records for a 2700+-year-old, world tea tree king. This has become one of Zhenyuan’s main tourist attractions.

–Puer City

Situated in the northwest of Yunnan Province, Puer has an important location in China’s southwestern boundary, neighboring Laos, Vietnam and Burma and sharing a 486 kilometers (302 miles) boundary line with these three countries. Kunming is about 550 kilometers (342 miles) from Puer.
Puer is in an important location linking roadway and waterway transportation between the China hinterland and Southeast Asia. Since 1896, it has been opened up as a commerce port, being one of the three towns of trading importance in Yunnan. Puer City was originally called,’Simao City’ and, is famous for its Puer Tea.

Puer consists of many ethnic minorities, such as Lahu, Hani, Wa and Yi. Varied customs make it a colorful city. Eating habits, ceremonies, costumes and folk legends can all be a strong attraction for people who are visiting. In addition, Puer City is the hometown of the well known Puer Tea, and Puer people have diversified ways of handling tea, such as bamboo tube tea, cold tea dish, earth-pot tea and baked tea; all of which you should try.

Day 4 Puer-Zhengdong Town-Yiwu Town

In the morning,drive up to Puer Tea Gardens, overlooking Puer City where Austin was interviewed by the media. You will explore the Chinese Tea Institute and their library of dried tea leaves before being whisked off to a tea tasting and more interviews.

Visit the Puer tea factory and experience how local people cook the Puer tea cakes.

In the afternoon, drive to Zhendong Town and visit Zhengdong Sansai Villages of Dai ethnic people.
Continue the driving to Yiwu Town for overnight.

Day 5 Yiwu Town

Guafengzhai Tea Plantation of Yiwu Mountain, XishuangBanna

Take a bumpy dirt road to see an 800yr old tea tree overlooking a gorgeous lush valley in Zhengshan Mountain. On the way back you walk along the Tea Horse Trail which begins in Yiwu village and goes all the way to Tibet.

Our next stop is He Tian Neng’s old tea workshop where you drink tea and see the stone blocks used to press tea cakes. Mr. He then will take you to his newer workshop where you watch as workers make puer tea cakes by hand using the following method:
Full tea leaves and buds (2 leaves to 1 bud) are picked and collected in baskets.
The leaves are spread out on woven trays and dried in the sun for several hours.
Once dried the leaves are steamed under low heat for about 30 seconds to bring the moisture back and make the leaves pliable.
The moist leaves are wrapped in a cloth and pressed by hand into a disc shape.
A heavy stone press is then placed on top of the tea cake and a worker stands on top of this press, rotating his wade in a circular motion for about a minute.

In about 10 minutes the stone press is removed and the cloth covered cake is moved to a shelf for drying.
After 6hrs or so the cloth is removed from the tea cake and it may be wrapped in tea paper.
Puer tea cakes may be used to make tea immediately, however because the leaves have not been cooked they will continue to oxidize over time and will mature into a deep rich flavor in 5-10 years.

Yiwu is one of the 6 famous puer tea mountains and home to a puer tea museum which we visited along with the start of the Tea Horse Trail. In the evening you hang out in the small Yiwu Village, have tea and beer in front a shop and fired off roman candles in the street. Glenn fired an errant shot, narrowly missed Kevin’s head, before we retired to our slightly rough accommodations for the night.

Day 6 Yiwu Town-Menglun-Jinghong

After a noodle breakfast, drive to visit Menglun Tropical Botanical Garden. Situated 103 kilometers, or 3 hour ride, from Jinghong, the Tropical Botanical Garden was founded in 1958 and is currently playing an important role in research in the areas of medicinal plants, taxonomy, economic plants and biochemistry. This garden proudly holds 3,000 species of plants, one of the richest botanical concentrations all over the world.

After visiting Menglun Tropical Botanical Garden, drive along a winding road through a tropical rain forest and stopped briefly at a rubber tree orchard on the way to Jinghong.

Day 7 Jinghong-Menghai-Jingmai

Drive to Menghai County, visit Nannuo Mountain Tea Plantation and Yunnan Tea Research Institute. Nanuo is one of six tea Mountains, the origin of tea of the world, today we will visit a tea plantation with history of over 600 years old.

One Day Nannuo Mountain Tea Culture Tour in XishuangBanna

At Yunnan Tea Research Institute, we will be given a lecture on Yunnan minority tea culture while enjoy the tea performance of courses of Flaming Tea from Ai’Ni ethnic minority, cool mixed tea of Jinou, Earth-pot tea of La’hu and so on.

Visit Jinzheng Octagonal Pavilion, and then drive to Lancang Lahu Autonomous County. Transfer to Huimin Town which is 50 kilometers away from Lancang Lahu Autonomous County.

Day 8 Jingmai

Get up in the early morning, visit Jingmai and Mangjing Ancient Tea Mountains in Huimin Town.
The Jingmai Mangjing Ancient Tea Association consists of 209 member households from two administrative villages, namely Jingmai and Mangjing, which are composed of six natural villages. Some of the poorest populations are often ethnic minorities in border regions where the Jingmai Mangjing Ancient Tea Association is located.

The popularity of ancient tea among Chinese tea drinkers has rapidly increased in recent years and can be produced in excellent quality from Jingmai and Mangjing’s tea trees. The number of leaves picked from ancient trees is currently 10 times higher than that of the fresh leaves picked from cultivated tea plants.

The Jingmai Mangjing Tea Association makes up most of the Jingmai Ancient Tea garden, which covers an area of 1600 ha, 910 ha of which are organic. The government has declared the Jingmai Ancient Tea Garden an important area for protection and began promoting ecotourism. The government also emphasizes organic management to increase the value of tea products.
Transfer to Menglian Dai, Lahu and Va Autonomous County and visit Nayun Ancient Town of Dai ethnic people.

Drive one hour and a half to Ximeng County, visit the Ancient Tea group and the original forest in Fodianshan Mountain with 2458 meters above the sea level. There are 19.5 square kilometers ancient tea trees in Fodianshan Mountain, which is well-known as one of the 8 famous tea mountains in Puer City.
Visit local tea factory in the afternoon.

–The Va ethnic minority, with a population of 396,610, lives in Ximeng, Cangyuan, Menglian, Gengma, Lancang, Shuangjiang, Zhenkang and Yongde counties in southwestern Yunnan Province. Some are found scattered in the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture and the Dehong Dai-Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture. Ximeng and Cangyuan counties are the main places where the Va people live in compact communities. In the areas where the Va people live, there are also Hans, Yis, Dais, Hanis, Lahus, Jingpos, Blangs, De’angs and Lisus.

Ximeng, Cangyuan, Menglian and Langcang are situated between the Lancang and Nu rivers, blocked by undulating mountain ridges some 2,000 meters above sea level. Traditionally this area was called the Ava hilly region.

With a subtropical climate, the fertile Ava region has plentiful rainfall and only 40 frost-free days a year. It is suitable for the growth of dry rice, paddy, maize, millet, buckwheat, potatoes, cotton, hemp, tobacco and sugarcane, as well as such subtropical fruits as bananas, pineapples, mangoes, papayas and oranges.

Day 10 Ximeng County-Shuangjiang

A long but nice driving from Ximeng County to Lincang City via Shuangjiang County. Visit The 10, 000 Acres Wild Ancient Tea Trees in Shuangjiang County.

One day Optional tea tour to Bingdao Village and visit the ancient tea trees as well as the Mengku Tea Factory in Mengku Town.
It is aournd 50KM from Mengku Town to Bingdao Village, take a local minibus to the village from a bumpy road, then trek to the village. Bingdao(±ùµº) , a small and poor Luhu ethnic village surrounded by green mountains which is the origin of the tea plantation in China. You can see several ancient tea trees around the village as well as the Lahu ethnic people with colorful costumes. Visit Bingdao Elementary School, exchange the culture with local ethnic students, prepare some gifts to these children. Cross the school, you will find some huge ancient tea trees with more than 2000 years old.

–Mengku Daxueshan Virgin Forest and the Ancient Tea Trees
The 10, 000 Acres Wild Ancient Tea Trees Garden is located in Mengku Town (ÛÂ¿âÏç) in Shuangjiang County. The wood has a total area of 12, 000 acres and a history of more than 2,500 years. Home to over 80, 000 ancient wild tea trees, it is the largest, oldest and highest tea trees wood ever found in this planet.

Day 11 Ximeng County-Shuangjiang-Lincang

Lying in the suburb of the Lin Xian g District, the 110 hectare scenic zone is one of the 25 most heated tourist destinations of Yunnan Province. It is an all-around man-made tourist zone for sightseeing, leisure, recreation and cultural exploration. Wandering in the tea garden, one can not only learn the far – reaching Chinese Tea culture and tradition but also take part in the whole process of preparing tea. In the mean time one will be exposed to the

colorful folk customs of the local nationalities.

–Lincang City is a prefecture-level city,With Lancang ( Mekong ) River to the east, Lincang region is located in the Southwest of Yunnan. It borders Myanmar and includes eight counties, including the only two Wa Autonomous Counties in Yunnan — Cangyuan and Ximeng, occupying 50% of the total population of Wa nationality in Yunnan.

Day 12 Lincang-Yunxian-Fengqing

In the morning, head for Xizhou Town to fully appreciate Bai-style traditional architectural courtyards, taste their fragrant Three-Course Tea and explore their distinctive culture.

Transfer to visit Zhoucheng Village and the Bai people’s Tie-dying cloth workshop where you can take some special souvenir with the Bai ethnic style.

Then visit Three Pagodas in Chongshen Monastery which has a history of over 1,800 years located at the foot of Cangshan Mountain facing to the Erhai Lake. Three Pagodas are made of three ancient independent pagodas forming a symmetrical triangle.

Day 15 Dali-Lijiang

Drive to Lijiang. Transfer to Dongba Culture Museum where more than 10,000 Dongba cultural relics show mysterious Dongba culture of the Naxi people. If weather permits, get to the best spot to overlook the snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and shoot some amazing pictures.

Day 1 Lijiang

In the mnorning, you’ll start your memorable Lijiang tour from Lijiang Ancient Town (Dayan Ancient Town). Take a leisure walk up the Lion Hill and climb up the 33-meter-tall Wanggu Tower – the landmark building of Lijiang to enjoy a panoramic view of the whole old town and countryside scenery, as well as overlook the magnificent Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the distance. Later, follow a trip to Ming-dynasty style Mufu Palace, the “Forbidden City” of Lijiang to know Tusi’s ruling history and appreciate Naxi people’s brilliant culture and fine arts.

After lunch, drive to visit Shuhe Old Town. Nestled at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, 6 km northwest of Lijiang old town. Shuhe was once a staging post at ancient Tea & Horse Road. With an altitude of 2440 meters above sea level, it is a tranquil town with a population of about 3000 people. Along with its sister town Lijiang, it is also part of the UNESCO Heritage site. Shuhe is the earliest settlement of Naxi people in Lijiang when their ancestors first moved to this region.

Afterwards, drive back to the hotel in the late afternoon. Service ends.

Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge trekking is the most perilous part than other parts of Tiger Leaping Gorge trekking. There are two ways connecting upper place to lower place. One is called “Tianti Ladder”, another one is called “Yixiantian”( A Tread of Sky). Get down to the river side, you will see the Jinsha River shrinking and getting blocked by several huge stones in a narrow valley. Listen to the deafening voice of water flapping at the stones, and explore the nearby.

From Lijiang, you’ll drive about 60KM to the First Bend on the Yangtze River with imposing gorge scenery, and the Iron Chain Bridge in Shigu Old Town. The town of Stone Drum got its name from a large, cylindrical, marble tablet shaped like a drum. The scenery is magnificent as the road running through the Lijiang valley which is filled with wheat fields and drying haystacks.

Continue the driving of 40KM more to visit the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge (Shangri-La side), the deepest gorge in the world. With 34 rapids of the Yangtze River, it is called the Jinsha in this area because you can find gold in the river.

Drive along the road to Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge . We will choose the most wonderful part of Tiger Leaping Gorge for the hiking adventure. Start the hiking tour from 14KM Point, trek along the road to Bendiwan Village and have lunch in Half-way Guesthouse where you will have a fantastic view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from the balcony of the guesthouse.

Hiking along the trail from Bendiwan Village to Tina’s Hostel. We will visit the Guanyin Waterfall, Guanyin Temple and steep cliffs. Hike down from the Bamboo Forest, we will have a nice view of Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, arrive in Tinas Hostel for a break.

Transfer to visit the Walnut Garden Village and drive back to Lijiang in the late afternoon.Service ends.
